Ericsson and Nokia Eyes Public Sector Procurement, Seeks Relief from Government

Non-Chinese telecom vendors Nokia and Ericsson are seeking relaxation from the government in restrictive condition like local value addition to push the domestic equipment manufacturing in India. As reported by ET Telecom, the Delhi-based telecom group, which represents various multinational vendors, have asked DoT to define the value composition for hardware and software design and development as a part of local content. Ericsson spokesperson noted that the telecom gear supplier is seeking support from the government so that total value addition in India in products and services are taken into consideration for the public procurement policy.

Participation of Chinese Telecom Gear Vendors in Network Deployments is Unclear

The recent geopolitical situations between India and China have adversely affected the normal functioning of the telecom industry. The government of India has barred Chinese telecom gear makers from supplying equipment to state-owned telco BSNL and MTNL. Also, all the private telcos are slowly reducing the dependency on Chinese telecom gear makers and shifting to multinational vendors. Since the participation of Chinese vendors, Huawei and ZTE in state-run network deployments are not clear, multinational vendors Nokia and Ericsson are planning to pursue their local ambition, especially the public sector procurement.

State-owned telco BSNL has already cancelled its 4G network supply and upgrade tender worth Rs 9,000 Crore last month as the telco received allegations of discouraging local telecom vendors from participating in the auction.

Ericsson is Strengthening Local Competency For Network Design and Optimization

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson is turning out to be the best alternative of Chinese telecom vendors as it offers competitive pricing and services to the telcos. COAI Director General SP Kochhar stated in a letter that Ericsson has been investing in India for both state of art manufacturing facility and developing local competency for implementation, network design, optimization and support for telecom equipment being supplied to telecom operators in India. He also stated that various global original equipment makers have invested in R&D and innovation activities. However, due to the global nature operations, the IPR status of the companies resides outside India. COAI has asked DoT for revised procurement policy and a task force to study the current status of Indian telecom manufacturing, R&D creation and assessment of global and Indian equipment makers facilities in the country.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Wednesday announced that the fixed monthly charges of its broadband plans will be revised from August 1, 2020. While several BSNL broadband users across India received a notification about the price hike in the last one week, BSNL Kerala circle has now issued an official notification about the revised prices. The broadband price hike is on the heels of the operator revising its fixed monthly charges of its landline services. It has to be noted that the operator offers 17 broadband plans across India, however, the price hike is said to be applicable on seven broadband plans. BSNL highlighted that the hike would be in the range of Rs 20 to Rs 30 per month.

BSNL Revises Fixed Monthly Charges of Various Broadband Plans

Additionally, the 2GB BSNL CUL plan offers unlimited calling within BSNL network and Rs 600 worth of calls to other networks. The 2GB BSNL CUL plan also offers unlimited calling between 10.30 pm to 6 am and unlimited calling on Sunday.

BSNL has also hiked the 2GB CUL plan that offers unlimited calls to all networks on all days along with the similar benefits as with the 2GB BSNL CUL plan. The 2GB CUL plan will be hiked from Rs 399 per month to Rs 419 per month.

The 3GB CUL plan that offers similar benefits as with the 2GB CUL plan but with enhanced daily data limits of 3GB has been hiked to Rs 519 per month from Rs 499.

BSNL has also hiked the 4GB CUL plan that enables users to browse up to 10 Mbps speeds till 4GB per day and at 2 Mbps beyond 4GB limit. The 4GB CUL plan also offers unlimited local and STD calls. The operator has hiked the 4GB CUL plan from Rs 599 per month to Rs 629.

OnePlus is known for coming out with an enhanced version of its smartphones called 'T' series. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer started it with the OnePlus 3 series when it launched the OnePlus 3T. Since then, OnePlus has launched OnePlus 5T, 6T, 7T, and 7T Pro as well. Now after the launch of OnePlus 8 series, it is expected that OnePlus 8T will soon come to the market. The 'T' models usually come in October and November months of the year. Now, a new OnePlus device model is visible in the listings of GeekBench. There is no doubt that this new smartphone is none other than the OnePlus 8T or even OnePlus 8T Pro.

OnePlus 8T Spotted on GeekBench

The new OnePlus device spotted in the GeekBench listing has the model number KB2001. The model number is running Android 11 which is very obvious. Google will have released the stable version of Android 11 by the time OnePlus 8T or 8T Pro comes out so it makes sense that OnePlus will launch its latest smartphone with the latest Android system.

As per the listing, OnePlus 8T will come with 8GB of RAM. The smartphone will be powered by the chipset Qualcomm Kona. This code name is for Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. This is the chipset which is already powering the OnePlus 8 series. So it can be expected that OnePlus comes out with the advanced version of this chipset which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+. It is a powerful chipset and is used in many recently launched gaming smartphones.

There are no more confirmations about the device. OnePlus has not made anything official about the OnePlus 8T or OnePlus 8T Pro but everyone knows that the smartphone is just around the corner. The GeekBench 5 scores of the recently listed model from OnePlus are in the range of what Snapdragon 865 smartphones offer. Going with the rumours, the OnePlus 8T Pro might come with a 65W fast charging support. Also, the new OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro are expected to house 64MP primary lens. It will be interesting to see which camera does OnePlus use for the 64MP sensor.

A few days back Bharti Airtel announced that people who will recharge for their fellow people will get a discount on recharges. There was a 4% discount applied on every prepaid plan recharge. This was done to ensure that people stay connected with each other during the time of the pandemic. But the Airtel's website has stopped reflecting the 4% discount now. But there are still some plans which come with a 4% discount, yet some other plans which had the discount earlier don't reflect any discount at all or come with a lesser discount of 2%.

Airtel Prepaid Plans Superhero Discount Reduced to 2% from 4%

Starting with the unlimited plans, Rs 19 prepaid plan of the telco is not offering any discount at all, earlier it used to come with a discount of Rs 1. Talking about the Rs 129 and Rs 99 plan, both these plans only offer Rs 3 and Rs 2 discount on recharging while earlier these plans offered a discount of Rs 5 and Rs 4 implying the discount to be reduced from 4% to 2%.

There is another new plan added by Airtel of Rs 289 which comes with the benefit of ZEE5 Premium, but there is no discount with the plan.

Earlier the Smart Recharge packs of Rs 49 and Rs 45 offered Rs 2 discount but now that has been reduced to Rs 1. Then another Smart Recharge pack of Rs 79 is offering Rs 2 discount instead of the earlier Rs 3 discount.

As for the data and talk time packs, the data pack of Rs 251 will not offer any discount. Adding to that, other coupons of Rs 48, Rs 98, and Rs 401 have also got a reduced discount of 2% from the telco's earlier offering of 4%. As for the Talk Time packs, again there is a reduced discount of 2% from the earlier 4% offered. The Rs 20 Talk Time pack is not offering any discount anymore. While the Rs 46 plan is now only offering a discount of 2% which is Rs 1 now.

As per the website of Airtel, the discount offer was bound to stop on June 30, 2020. There is no information about since when the plans started offering no discounts and lower discounts.

The direct competition for the Rs 819 plan is the Rs 699 plan. This is because the Rs 699 plan also offers 2GB daily data with a validity of 84 days. Other benefits of the plan are the same. The only extra benefit the Rs 819 plan has over the Rs 699 plan is that it offers Idea Movies and one year extended warranty. Apart from that, Rs 699 plan is boosted with the double data offer and comes with 4GB data every day instead of 2GB.

Other 2GB daily data plans are Rs 299 and Rs 449 plans. Both these plans have also been boosted with the double data offer by Vodafone. So they are offering 4GB daily data. The Rs 299 plan comes with a validity of 28 days with other benefits remaining the same as of the Rs 699 plans. As for the Rs 449 plan, it comes with a validity of 56 days with other benefits remaining the same as of Rs 699 plan.
