Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook on Thursday said in the second quarter earnings call that Facebook is "really excited about the opportunity" in India. The company on Thursday reported its financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2020, with Facebook recording an 11% year-over-year (YoY) growth in its revenue. The social networking giant said that its daily active users (DAUs) increased 12% YoY to 1.79 billion on average for June 2020. Similarly, Facebook said that its monthly active users (MAUs) also increased 12% to touch 2.70 billion as of June 30, 2020. Facebook Sees India As A Huge OpportunityFacebook also highlighted that the monthly users of its family apps including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp touched 3.14 billion as of June 30, representing an 14% YoY growth. “We’re glad to be able to provide small businesses the tools they need to grow and be successful online during these challenging times,” Zuckerberg said. “And we’re proud that people can rely on our services to stay connected when they can’t always be together in person.” Further, Zuckerberg in the earnings call said that India is the largest country for Facebook in terms of its user base. "It should be one of the faster-growing business opportunities as well to help businesses grow there, and we’re very excited about that," he said. Zuckerberg also said that India presents a "huge opportunity" for the company to enable small businesses and individuals "to buy and sell things through WhatsApp." "We want to enable that," Zuckerberg said. "That starts with enabling payments. A big part of the partnership that we have with Jio will be to wire up and get thousands of kiranas, small businesses across India, onboarded onto WhatsApp to do commerce there. And once we prove that out with Jio in India, we’re planning on expanding it to more folks in India and to other countries as well." It has to be noted that Facebook initially announced its investment into Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries and the company behind Reliance Jio in April. Dave Wehner, CFO of Facebook in the earnings call said that Facebook closed its investment in Jio Platforms in July and that the company approximately paid US$5.8 billion in cash. Facebook on its part is said to be working hard on expanding its multiple commerce products targeting small businesses and individuals. Zuckerberg said that the Facebook Shops that the company rolled out in early 2020, enables small businesses "to put in a catalog and then have a Shop across Instagram and Facebook to start." It was said that the Shops could eventually expand across all of the Facebook family apps. The company is said to be building Facebook Pay that enables users to store credit card information that makes it "easier to do follow-on transactions in any of the apps." However, Zuckerberg said that he is "excited" about messaging commerce as it is "particularly important, especially in developing countries." "But we’re seeing a lot of small businesses just conduct a significant portion of their business over Messenger or over WhatsApp," Zuckerberg said. "And in the medium term, I think the way that we’re probably going to build a business around that, we already offer the business API, and that will be meaningful." Zuckerberg said that messaging commerce "will grow as a trend." Facebook Warns of Decline in Daily and Monthly Active User BaseMeanwhile, the company said that it expects the DAUs and MAUs to be "flat or slightly down in most regions in the third quarter of 2020" as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease. Facebook said that it is witnessing "signs of normalization in user growth and engagement" in the places where COVID-19 restrictions have been eased, "particularly in developed markets where Facebook’s penetration is higher." Crucially, the company said that the revenue growth in the first three weeks of July was "in-line with our second quarter 2020 year-over-year ad revenue growth rate of 10%." "We expect our full quarter year over-year ad revenue growth rate for the third quarter of 2020 will be roughly similar to this July performance," the company said. It has to be noted that Coca-Cola, Unilever and other leading companies have pulled advertising from Facebook and other social networks. Despite the boycott of leading advertisers, Facebook highlighted a revenue growth rate of 10%.

WhatsApp is easily one of the biggest social media apps in the world with more than a billion active users. Back in June, the app had an active user base of 1.5 billion people. One of the reasons why it has been so successful over the years is that it keeps rolling out new updates. Another anticipated update of the app remained the 'Messenger Rooms' integration. Now it has finally happened. But the update has been restricted to WhatsApp Web only. There is no word on when the update will be rolled out for the mobile version of the app. Let's take a look at how it is and how it will work. Messenger Room Live in WhatsApp Web, How You Can Access? If you can't see the Messenger Rooms option in your WhatsApp Web app, then you should check if it is updated and running the latest version or not. The latest version of the app is 2.2031.4. If you want to use the Messenger Rooms, then you have two ways available in which you can do it. The first way would be to open the app and find the down arrow kind of symbol on the top left of your screen. When you click on that, you will see an option for 'Create a room' clicking upon which you will be prompted to click on 'CONTINUE IN MESSENGER' option or 'CANCEL' option. When you click on the continue in Messenger option, you will be taken to your default browser and asked to log in to your Facebook account if not already. When you do that, you will be able to create a room and ask people to join by sharing the link with them. Another way you can do so is by going to an individual chat screen and click on the attachment option. Once you do so, you will see a new option 'Room'. Click on it and you will be asked to follow the same procedure as with the other option. One thing to note is that the Room won't be created on the WhatsApp app itself, but it will redirect you to the Messenger's link in your default browser. Video calling will also support screen sharing. Original article: WhatsApp Web Users Finally Get Messenger Rooms With Screen Sharing Feature Enabled ©2020 TelecomTalk. All Rights Reserved. |
| Airtel Targeting Higher ARPU of Rs 300, Another Tariff Hike Around the Corner Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:57 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-higher-arpu-rs300-tariff-hike/286364/, Airtel Targeting Higher ARPU of Rs 300, Another Tariff Hike Around the Corner
Bharti Airtel recently released its quarterly report as per SEBI guidelines. The telco reported an increased average revenue per user (ARPU) of Rs 157 in the Q1'21. Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel said that the telco will be looking for reaching a higher ARPU mark in the coming time. This is so that the telco could ensure that it is running a sustainable business with a good and strategic business model. Vittal said that Airtel would stop working with its Chinese partners ZTE and Huawei in case there is a notification from the government. But then that would mean the telco will have to purchase the 5G spectrum from either Indian companies or from some other country, which will be quite expensive for the company. Tariff Hike Necessary to Ensure Higher ARPUAirtel doesn't offer the cheapest plans right now. That said, Vittal noted that the tariffs have to go up even further. The only question that needs to be answered is that when is the right time to do so. Higher tariffs will ensure that ARPU of Bharti Airtel reaches Rs 200 from the current Rs 157 and then later Rs 300 as well. This will help the telco in maintaining a sustainable business model and along with that will help them in making meaningful capex expenditure. Vittal said that Bharti Airtel is not in a hurry for deploying 5G services. The telco believes that the current base price for 5G airwaves which is set by the regulator is not the right one, it is far too expensive than what it should be. Vittal further said that it would take years for India before it can get the 5G ecosystem which makes any impact. Along with that, Bharti Airtel has shut down its 3G network and services. But the telco is yet to move on from the 2G network. Vittal said that they are not in any hurry for shutting down the telco’s 2G services. Only when the revenue coming from the 2G network is very low, the company will make a decision on continuing it or not. | Broadband Internet Throttling: What is it and What You Can Do to Avoid it? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:45 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/broadband-internet-throttling-explained-india/286282/, Broadband Internet Throttling: What is it and What You Can Do to Avoid it?
One thing that is really frustrating for anyone is slow internet after paying for high-speed data. It happens with everyone. There are a lot of factors behind it such as the location you are in or the kind of device you are using and more. But one major factor bending slow internet speed which not a lot of people know about is internet throttling. Some internet service providers (ISPs) deliberately limit the bandwidth for the users so that they can't access full speed from their internet connection. But why do they do so? Keep reading ahead to find out. Deliberate Broadband Internet Throttling by ISPsThe primary purpose of internet throttling by ISPs is to maintain a stable network connection throughout. If there are a lot of people using the internet in the same area at the same time to stream HD content online or download big files, it can create a lot of pressure on the network. This is the reason why internet plans come with a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) which limits the customer to a particular amount of monthly and daily data. This is so that the internet won't be used by just the small percentage of people who want to use it every time. It should be available for everyone in the same capacity. Another reason why ISPs do such a thing is so that they can offer higher bandwidth with premium plans for which they earn more. How Do You Identify Broadband Internet Throttling? One of the easiest ways of checking internet throttling is to keep checking the internet speed at regular intervals. You can use a speed test app or some other service. Note down the speed that you get at different times. If you find a pattern where the internet speed is slow and where it is high, you will understand that your ISP is throttling the internet for your connection. Ask other users who are in your area if they find a similar pattern or not. If it is like that, then the ISP is throttling the internet to maintain a stable network. What You Can Do to Avoid Internet Throttling for Your Network? An easy thing to do would be to use a VPN network for downloading, uploading, or browsing through the internet. ISPs won't be able to track your actual internet usage if you use a VPN network. Thus you might just escape the bandwidth throttling. Another way you can escape internet throttling purchase a premium internet plan or high data plan which doesn't limit your data usage to what you don't want for a day or a month.
