This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/broadband-subscriber-addition-may-2020/292825/, Broadband Service Providers in India Add 360,000 Subscribers in May

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across India added 360,000 subscribers in May, 2020, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) highlighted in its report on Wednesday. According to the Trai data, the wired broadband service providers across India registered a combined subscriber base of 19.38 million as on May 31, 2020. In April, the wired broadband service providers recorded a combined subscriber base of 19.02 million representing an 1.88% monthly growth in the subscriber base. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Bharti Airtel, Atria Convergence Technologies, Hathway Cable and Datacom along with Reliance Jio continued to emerge as the top five wired broadband service providers in India.

BSNL Continues to Lose Wired Broadband Subscribers

BSNL continued its position as the top wired broadband service provider in India with a subscriber base of 7.93 million as on May 31, 2020. However, the operator in April recorded a subscriber base of 7.97 million subscribers with the data highlighting that BSNL lost 40,000 subscribers in one month.

The operator as on December 31, 2019, recorded a subscriber base of 8.39 million but has since consistently recorded a decline in its subscriber base. With the Trai subscription data for the month of May highlighting that BSNL had 7.93 million subscribers, the operator has lost over 460,000 subscribers in five months.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel retained its position as the second largest wired broadband service provider in India with a subscriber base of 2.41 million as on May 31, 2020. The operator till April had consistently registered an increase in its subscriber base. In March, Airtel is said to have recorded 2.47 million subscribers before its subscriber base dipped in April to 2.44 million. It also has to be noted that Airtel post the initial COVID-19 lockdowns had provided multiple offers to new users signing up for its Xstream Fiber connection including free installation and free router.

India was under an intense lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 24, 2020. While the government eased certain restrictions in the second phase of the lockdown that was implemented from April 16, shops and businesses were allowed to function in limited capacity only in late April. Further, the government eased several other restrictions in the third phase of the lockdown implemented from May 4.

Airtel was among the initial set of internet providers to have resumed sign ups for its wired broadband service in mid-April.

ACT and Reliance Jio Gain Record Subscribers in May

The Trai telecom Subscription data for the month of May reveals that the Atria Convergence Technologies recorded a subscriber base of 1.64 million. In April, the operator recorded a subscriber base of 1.59 million with the data highlighting that Atria Convergence Technologies added 50,000 subscribers in one month.

Hathway Cable and Datacom also retained its subscriber base in India with the operator recording a subscriber base of 0.97 million as on May 31, 2020. The operator since March had maintained its subscriber base of 0.97 million. In February, Hathway Cable and Datacom registered a subscriber base of 0.94 million.

Meanwhile, Reliance Jio Infocomm emerged as the largest gainer of wired broadband subscribers in May with the operator registering a subscriber base of 0.97 million. In April, the operator recorded a subscriber base of 0.90 million with the data highlighting that Reliance Jio gained 70,000 subscribers in one month. It has to be noted that Reliance Jio that offers its service under JioFiber provided Basic broadband connectivity with speeds of 10 Mbps for no additional charge. The operator offered the Basic broadband connectivity to subscribers even with the inactive lines in April. Further, the company since late March has been offering double data to all its subscribers due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

In late July, Trai released its Telecom Subscription data for April highlighting that the wired broadband service providers across India lost 160,000 subscribers. The top five wired broadband service providers in India all recorded a dip in the subscriber base while Reliance Jio recorded an increase in its wired broadband subscriber base. It remains to be seen how the wired broadband service providers fare in June as the country transitioned from COVID-19 lockdown phase to the Unlock 1.0 phase. The government with the Unlock 1.0 eased several restrictions that were in place since the COVID-19 lockdown in March including relaxations to shops, offices and food outlets.

It has been a tough time for the telecom sector of India. With the pandemic and several lockdowns, telcos have been operating in losses. But it is not the same with Reliance Jio. While major telcos such as Vodafone Idea Limited and Bharti Airtel lost wireless subscribers, Reliance Jio gained a lot of them and surprisingly with it, BSNL also saw an increase in the number of subscribers on the month of May 2020. Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited lost around the same number of wireless subscribers. The total number of wireless subscribers which the telecom industry lost in the month of May 2020 is 56,11,339 (5.6 million).

Reliance Jio the Top Gainer, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone together Lose 9.4 Million Wireless Subscribers

Even at the time when every telecom company in India was struggling to operate, Reliance Jio made itself a fortune with all the investments and with that gained many new subscribers as well. In the month of May 2020, Reliance Jio gained 36,57,794 (3.6 million), wireless subscribers. Along with Jio, BSNL gained 2,01,592 (0.2 million) wireless subscribers and MTNL lost 1,528 wireless subscribers.

As for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited, both the telcos lost many of their wireless subscribers. Airtel lost 47,42,840 (4.7 million) subscribers and Vodafone Idea lost 47,26,357 (4.7 million) subscribers. Both the telcos together lost nearly a million subscribers in the month of May 2020.

Percentage wise growth of wireless subscribers for telcos was — Reliance Jio (+0.94%), BSNL (0.17%), MTNL (-0.05%), Bharti Airtel (-1.47%), and Vodafone Idea (-1.50%).

Coming to the active subscribers, Bharti Airtel witnessed the maximum percentage (96.63%) of active wireless subscribers against its total wireless subscribers in the month of May 2020. MTNL, on the other hand, witnessed the least proportion of VLR (19.30%) in the month of May 2020.

BSNL Initiated Discussions with Other Telecom Operators for 4G Services

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-discussions-initiated-4g-services/292781/, BSNL Initiated Discussions with Other Telecom Operators for 4G Services

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has "initiated discussions" with other telecom operators for launching 4G services across the country. The development was shared by Sanchar Nigam Executives Association (SNEA) on Tuesday as SNEA shared the highlights of its meeting with P K Purwar, CMD of BSNL. SNEA is said to be the largest and recognised executive association in BSNL with more than 12,000 members. The members of the SNEA and Purwar were said to have had a meeting on Monday on multiple issues including the launch of BSNL 4G services.

BSNL 4G Delayed Could Witness One Year Delay

It was said that the new BSNL 4G tender for the procurement of 4G equipment and the launch of the BSNL 4G services may be delayed by more than one year.

It has to be noted that BSNL in early 2020 had issued a tender that required the vendors to deal with the "planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning & annual maintenance of 4G mobile network." The operator had estimated that the winners of the tender would deal with 50,000 sites of BSNL and 7000 sites of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) in Delhi and Mumbai circles. The tender was scheduled to be opened in late June following multiple delays in the prior weeks. However, the escalated confrontation between the Chinese soldiers and the Indian soldiers in mid June had resulted in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) placing restrictions on BSNL from sourcing telecom gear from Chinese vendors.

Niti Aayog, the Indian government's policy think tank is said to have suggested BSNL to go for indigenously designed, developed and manufactured products for its 4G network. The DoT in late June set up a committee "for recommending technical specifications" for BSNL 4G tender.

The SNEA on Tuesday highlighted that the committee constituted by the government has "almost finalised the report" and that the "committee may recommend" the BSNL to opt for "indigenous core equipments."

"The unfortunate part is that no one came forward with a proven technology for core equipments so far," SNEA said. "The equipments are to be tested, go for proof of concept and then instalment. This all indicates that new tender may take place after one to 1. 5 years."

BSNL in Talks with Other Telecom Operators for 4G Services

With BSNL facing delays over 4G services, the SNEA is said to have suggested the operator opt for roaming agreement with other operators and launch the services by becoming a virtual network operator. The SNEA is also said to have suggested BSNL management to consider spectrum sharing with other telecom carriers.

"Management already initiated discussions with other operators, CMD informed us," the SNEA said on Tuesday. "It is a matter of great pride for SNEA, our suggestion for 4G launch got the attention of BSNL management and started acting on it."

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/google-chrome-receives-major-improvements-tabs-now-load-10-faster/292749/, Google Chrome Receives Major Improvements, Tabs Now Load 10% Faster

Google on Tuesday said that the Chrome tabs will now load up to 10% faster due to the multiple "under-the-hood performance improvements" such as the Profile Guided Optimisation (PGO) and tab throttling. According to a blog post, Max Christoff, engineering director of Chrome said that the PGO, a compiler optimisation tool ensures that the "most performance-critical" section of a code runs faster. PGO is said to use real usage scenarios that "match the workflows of Chrome users around the world.” It was said that the "most common tasks" receive preferential treatment and are made "faster."

Chrome Users to Notice Improvements in Performance

Christoff said in the blog post that the Chrome tabs delivered "greater speed improvements" in their testing even under noticeable load to the CPU.

"Our testing consistently shows pages loading up to 10% faster at the median, and even greater speed improvements when your CPU is tasked with running many tabs or programs," Christoff said.

Further, Christoff said that the tab throttling will ensure that the Chrome browser provides additional resources to the tabs that are currently under use.

"Chrome will give more resources to the tabs you're using by taking them back from tabs that have been in the background for a long time," Christoff said. "We see improvements not only in loading speed but also battery and memory savings."

The tab throttling is currently said to be rolling out to the users on the beta channel.

Google Chrome Users Can Now Collapse and Expand Tab Groups

Additionally, Google in the release on Tuesday said that its Chrome users can now collapse and expand tab groups.

"This was the most popular feature request we heard from those of you using tab groups," Google said.

Meanwhile, Google has also delivered multiple other updates to its Chrome browser including "touch-friendly tabs" for tablet mode and tab previews.

The "touch-friendly" tabs are said to make it "easier" for the users to flip through tabs on Chrome in a tablet mode. Google said that the Chromebooks will initially receive the feature consisting of a new touchscreen interface with tabs that are "larger and more practical to organize."

Further, Chrome on Android will now suggest the users switch to an already-open tab when they start typing a page title into the address bar and the users have that page opened in the background. The Android Chrome users will also notice the improvements to URL sharing that aids users to quickly copy a link and send it to Chrome on other devices or other apps. It was also said that the users can print the page or generate QR code to scan or download. The QR code feature is also said to be rolling out to desktop browser with the users provided the ability to access the code through a dedicated QR icon on the address bar.

The Chrome users on the beta channel can now hover over a tab and "quickly see a thumbnail preview" of the page.

Crucially, the enhancements to Chrome as introduced on Tuesday now also includes the ability for the users to fill out and save PDF forms directly from Chrome.

Realme X7 series will go official on September 1 and the company has already started teasing features of the upcoming devices. The Realme X7 series will have two smartphones- the Realme X7 and the Realme X7 Pro. The company has been teasing the Realme X7 Pro a lot. A key feature of the Realme X7 Pro which has been teased today is the presence of the unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 5G SoC. A couple of days ago, it was rumoured that the upcoming Oppo Reno 5 series would make use of this high-end Snapdragon 860 SoC, but it now seems like the Realme X7 Pro will be the first device with SD 860 chipset. Qualcomm is yet to announce this new chipset which is why the details of this SoC are unavailable at this moment.

Realme X7 Pro: What We Know So Far?

The Realme X7 Pro will be a high-end smartphone, at least we can say that going by the latest teaser. The handset might arrive with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The surprising aspect is the presence of Snapdragon 860 chipset which will also offer 5G support. It seems like the cost of Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865+ aren’t coming down anytime soon and Qualcomm is bringing a cheaper version of the same. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming chipset will fare compared to the existing ones.

Other confirmed features of the Realme X7 Pro include 4500mAh battery, quad-camera setup and a flashy design with ‘Dare to Leap’ text written on the rear. The phone will also sport a 120Hz AMOLED panel.

disney-hotstar-plans-reliance-jio-airtel-detailed

Reliance Jio announced two new plans which will come with the benefit of Disney+ Hotstar. Disney+ Hotstar has become a popular OTT content app in India very fast. The two new packs which Reliance Jio announced yesterday are of Rs 499 and Rs 777. Both of these plans provide the customer with Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit of one year. One of the biggest media rights that Disney+ Hotstar has at the moment is of Dream 11 IPL which is going to start soon. Thus Jio has marketed its Rs 499 plan under the Cricket Pack category. At the same time, Bharti Airtel also offers plans with Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit. Let's take a look at each of the plan from both the telcos which offer Disney+ Hotstar.

Reliance Jio

At the moment, Reliance Jio is offering a total of 8 prepaid plans which offer the benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP. Out of these 8 plans, only three of these plans come with voice calling benefit. Let's start with the voice calling plans from Reliance Jio which offer Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit. The first plan comes for Rs 401 with a validity of 28 days only but offers 3GB daily data and 6GB bonus data. There is unlimited calling included with 1,000 FUP minutes and 100 SMS/day. The second plan comes for Rs 777 (new plan) with a validity of 84 days and offers 1.5GB daily data along with 5GB bonus data and unlimited calling with 3,000 FUP minutes and 100 SMS/day. The third plan is priced at Rs 2,599 which has a validity of 365 days and offers 2GB daily data along with 10GB bonus data, unlimited calling with 12,000 FUP minutes and 100 SMS/day. All of these plans also include a complimentary subscription of all the Jio apps.

Talking about the plans which offer Disney+ Hotstar VIP but no voice calling benefit and only data benefits, there are five of those. Starting with the newly launched plan, Rs 499 (cricket pack), it has a validity of 56 days and offers 1.5GB daily data. There are no other benefits included with the pack.

Other data add-on packs from Jio which offer Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit are Rs 612, Rs 1,004, Rs 1,206, and Rs 1,208. The first one which costs Rs 612 is added on top of the existing plan and has the same validity as of it and offers 72GB unlimited data along with 6,000FUP minutes for calling. The second one comes for Rs 1,004 and offers 200GB data for 120 days with a subscription to all the Jio apps. The Rs 1,206 plan comes with a validity of 180 days and offers 240GB data along with a subscription to all the Jio apps. The last one comes for Rs 1,208, just Rs 2 more than the Rs 1,206 plan but offers increased validity of 240 days and 240GB data with a complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps.

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel offers a total of four plans with the benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP. Out of these four plans, three plans come with voice calling benefit and the other one comes with data benefit only. Starting with the data add-on plan, it costs Rs 401 and has a validity of 28 days and offers 30GB data along with a one-year subscription of Disney+ Hotstar VIP. The Reliance Jio Rs 401 plan offers a total of 90GB data which is a lot more compared to the one from Airtel.

Coming to the first prepaid plan with voice calling benefit which offers Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription, it costs Rs 448. The plan comes with a validity of 28 days only and offers 3GB daily data along with unlimited calling and other Airtel Thanks benefits. Again, the 28 days validity plan from Reliance Jio is cheaper and offers 6GB bonus data.

The Rs 599 plan from Airtel offers Disney+ Hotstar VIP for one year and it comes with a validity of 56 days offering 2GB daily data, unlimited calling, and Airtel Thanks benefits. The last plan from Airtel which offers Disney+ Hotstar VIP for one year is of Rs 2,598 and has a validity of one year. The plan offers 2GB daily data to the customer along with unlimited calling and Airtel Thanks benefits. All of the plans with voice calling benefit also offers customers 100 SMS/day.

When comparing the Disney+ Hotstar VIP plans from both the telcos, one thing is very clearly visible and it is that Reliance Jio offers cheaper packs with better data benefits. But then with Airtel, there is no FUP limit on voice calling and the customer can make calls unworried about his/her balance running out. Along with that, there are Airtel Thanks benefits as well.
