Airtel Accelerates Xstream Fiber Broadband Expansion Plans

Bharti Airtel has accelerated its Xstream Fiber expansion plans across India as the operator has now added over 25 new cities with the "launching soon" tag. The operator earlier in the month had the "launching soon" tag in 23 cities across the country. With the latest additions, Airtel has highlighted that its Xstream Fiber service will soon be available in over 50 cities in the upcoming months. In early August, Airtel had launched its Xstream Fiber services in six cities while the company in July had launched its services across 10 cities in India.

Airtel Adds "Launching Soon" Tag in Over 25 Cities Across India

The company has now listed over 25 cities with the "launching soon" tag including Ahmednagar, Ariyalur, Barwani, Chamrajnagar, Chamoli, Champawat, Chikodi, Dindori, Jalna, Kaushambi, Kodagu, Mahendragarh, Maharajganj, Mewat, Mirzapur, Parbhani, Raigad and Ramnagara.

Further, Airtel has also highlighted that Rudraprayag, Saran, Shrawasti, Sivaganga, Tehri Garhwal, Thiruvannamalai, Thoothukudi, Udhampur, Uttarkashi, and Viluppuram will also soon receive the Airtel Xstream Fiber services.

It has to be noted that Airtel now offers its pan India plans even in the cities where it offers its Xstream Fiber service through Local Cable Operators (LCO). The operator had earlier offered advance rental packs with speeds in the range of 16 Mbps to 300 Mbps in the LCO cities. However, it has to be noted that the company charges Rs 2000 as activation fees along with Rs 1000 as wiring charges in LCO cities. The company highlights that the activation fees will be waived off on semi-annual and annual plans. Crucially, the Xstream Fiber users in the LCO cities will not be provided voice services. It is currently unclear whether the listed cities will all be covered by Airtel directly or whether the services will be offered through an LCO.

The company in its first quarter earnings call had said that it is "accelerating" the LCO model "quite rapidly" and that it will "start expanding over the next six to 12 months."

Airtel Set to Launch Xstream Fiber Services in All Major Cities

In early August, Airtel had listed several other cities with an "launching soon" tag including Akola, Aligarh, Amravati, Bahraich, Barabanki, Bikaner, Chandauli, Chandrapur, Davanagere, Dharamshala, Dhule, Hosur, Jalgaon, Jhunjhunu, Latur and Muzzafarnagar.

The company also highlighted that the users in Nanded, Ramanathapuram, Ratnagiri, Satara, Solapur, Sonbhadra, Tirupati and Udaipur will also be offered Xstream Fiber services.

Reliance Jio Ready to Set Up Cable Landing Station at Digha, West Bengal

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is soon going to set up a cable landing station at Digha, West Bengal. Jio has been making steady moves and has already become the most valuable telco in the country in a short span of 4 years. A few months back, it got a ton of investments from various companies all around the world including the likes of Facebook and Google. Reliance Jio was looking to set up a cable landing station in Digha, West Bengal which would involve a cost of Rs 1,000 crore to the company. Now the project has been approved by the cabinet of Bengal.

Jio's Cable Landing Station Plan for Digha Approved, Set Back for BSNL

Mamata Bannerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal said, "Reliance Jio had sent a proposal for a cable landing station in Digha and the cabinet cleared it today. It would invest a sum of Rs 1,000 crore. The infrastructure would generate employment opportunities in the state."

This news is a set back for BSNL though. Back in 2011, BSNL had proposed a plan for setting up a cable landing station at Digha. But the cabinet hadn't cleared that. Looking at the current circumstances of both Jio and BSNL, it only makes sense to give permission to Jio ahead of BSNL since BSNL doesn't have a very strong financial position at the moment.

According to a source, Jio is going to purchase a 1.5-acre plot from the government at the market rate for building the station at Digha. This cable landing station is going to be the first in eastern India. It will boost the IT sector of the state. Not only that, but this project would also raise employment opportunities for the people of the state. Tech companies would be attracted to West Bengal for setting up data centres and making investments which will improve the economy of the country and also boost the telecom infrastructure.

An official said, "The chief minister is laying stress on these projects as these are capable of generating employment opportunities. This is what the ruling party is focusing ahead of the 2021 Assembly polls."

VIL Gets Show Cause Notice by Trai Over the ‘RedX’ Priority Plan

vodafone-redx-speed-technology

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has been going back and forth with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited over the 'priority 4G network' plan. Trai had earlier questioned both the telcos over their 'priority 4G network' plan saying that the telcos should have registered the plan as a new type of offering so it could have been examined properly. Now, the regulator has issued a show-cause notice to VIL over the same issue. In its 'show cause' notice, Trai has asked VIL about giving a reason for why should action be not initiated against the telco for violation of the extant regulatory framework with its RedX plan.

VIL Gets a Show Cause Notice, What About Bharti Airtel?

It was not just VIL which was questioned by Trai a few weeks back. There was Bharti Airtel as well, so what about a show-cause notice to Airtel? According to sources of PTI, Airtel has offered to abide by whatever Trai asks of it and has also modified its Platinum offering in a way which doesn't violate the regulatory framework. Thus Trai is not going to proceed further with the investigation on Bharti Airtel.

For VIL though, the show cause notice sent to the telco read, "claim of VIL for providing priority 4G network with faster data speeds is not in compliance with the extant regulatory framework".

Trai mentioned in the notice that the RedX tariff offer lacks transparency and is very misleading to the customers, all of which results in non-compliance by the telco with the regulatory rules of tariff analysis under Telecom Tariff order, 1999. In addition to this, Trai said that VIL's RedX plan is not in compliance of the licence agreement as well as technical specifications.

Responding to the questions earlier asked by Trai, VIL had said that it is not offering any new type of service with its RedX plan. VIL has also challenged Trai's views on the plan being listed separately since it is a new type of service. The telco has explained and justified its pay-more-for-priority-experience plan to its customers already.

Tensions Between India and China Has Put Considerable Pressure on Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo

Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:49 AM PDT

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/india-china-tensions-xiaomi-oppo-vivo/292982/, Tensions Between India and China Has Put Considerable Pressure on Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo

The total smartphone production has hit 286 million units in the second quarter of the current year representing a 16.7% year-over-year (YoY) decline, TrendForce said in a report on Tuesday. The company engaged in the market intelligence reports said that the dip in the smartphone production was the "largest quarterly YoY drop in history." However, TrendForce said that the smartphone production sequentially had a "slight" quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) 2.2% rebound. The company said that the dip in smartphone production was largely down to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in governments across the world to impose border closures and regional lockdown. TrendForce said that the lockdowns have led to the "significant declines" in gross domestic product (GDP) of various countries.

COVID-19 Lockdowns "Severely Damaged" Smartphone Industry

The company said that the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions and the economic stimulus policies offered in certain countries will aid the smartphone market's potential rebound into the second half of 2020. TrendForce said that the total smartphone production in the third quarter of the current year is expected to hit 335 million units, representing 10.1% YoY decline but an 17.2% QoQ increase.

Samsung is said to have been the most affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic as compared to the other brands. TrendForce said that the US, Europe and India are the major markets for Samsung smartphones but that the "very severe" COVID-19 outbreaks hurt the sales of the Samsung devices. Samsung is said to have continued to lead the industry in terms of smartphone production with 55 million units in the 2020 second quarter. However, TrendForce said that the South Koran major is the only brand among the top six leading brands to have posted close to 16% QoQ decline in smartphone production.

TrendForce said that Samsung’s production volume is likely to increase in the third quarter of 2020 as the South Korean company will seek to offset its "poor performance" in the previous quarter.

"As China-U.S. tensions intensify due to the latter’s sanctions against Huawei, and China-India relations continue to destabilise, Samsung has been building up its inventories as it targets the entry-level and mid-range segments in order to compensate for its poor performances in the previous quarter," TrendForce said in a report.

Huawei, the second largest smartphone maker is said to continue to "heavily rely" on the Chinese market. It was said that Huawei increased its smartphone production by 13% QoQ to around 52 million units in the second quarter of 2020. TrendForce highlighted that the smartphone sales of Huawei in the overseas markets have been "falling sharply" since the end of last year due to the effect of trade sanctions by the US government.

"These measures will make the R&D of in-house mobile processors and sourcing of components much more difficult for this Chinese smartphone brand," TrendForce said. "Given that Huawei depends on China for smartphone sales, other Chinese brands, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, are expected to cut into Huawei's market share."

Meanwhile, Apple is said to have increased its iPhone production by 8% in the second quarter of 2020 to 41 million units "thanks to above-expected sales of the iPhone SE and the iPhone 11." TrendForce said that the demand for the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 is "expected to remain strong" in the third quarter of 2020. Further, Apple is also expected to mass produce its four new models scheduled to be launched as the iPhone 12 series, resulting in an increase in its smartphone production.

"The BOM costs of the iPhone 12 models are significantly higher compared with the models in the previous series because of the 5G support," TrendForce said. "To cut costs and stabilize retail pricing, Apple has decided to sell the upcoming iPhones without accessories such as wired earphones, power adapter, etc."

Crucially, TrendForce highlighted that the recent orders from the Trump administration on TikTok, WeChat and their parent companies ByteDance and Tencent "may have an impact" on Apple's performance in the Chinese market.

Border Tensions Between India and China Puts Pressure on Chinese Brands

Xiaomi is said to be the fourth largest smartphone marker with the company hitting 29.5 million units in the second quarter of 2020 followed by Oppo with 27.5 million. TrendForce highlights that the numbers of Oppo includes Oppo, OnePlus and Realme. Further, Vivo is said to made 26.5 million units in the second quarter of 2020.

TrendForce said that the three Chinese brands namely Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo "benefitted from the recent recovery" in the Chinese market.

"Furthermore, they also took advantage of the precautionary inventory building in the overseas retail channels during the first half of the year," TrendForce said. "Retailers stocked up aggressively during that time in fear of pandemic-related disruptions."

TrendForce said that the growth in the Chinese market coupled with the inventory build up at the overseas retailers resulted in Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo to post an 10% QoQ increase.

"Recent border tensions between India and China have placed considerable pressure on the three brands' sales efforts since they all count on India as one of their major foreign markets," TrendForce said. "On the other hand, they have been cultivating their presence in the country for a long time."

However, TrendForce said that the price competitiveness "may be enough" for the Chinese brands to power them through the "difficult period" with the companies retaining its market share.

"Nevertheless, Chinese smartphone brands will be very constrained in terms of growth if the relationship between their home country and India remains tense," TrendForce said.

Looking ahead, TrendForce predicts yearly smartphone production to hit 1.24 billion units for 2020, representing an 11.3% YoY decrease.

"Assuming the pandemic can be brought under control in 2021, total smartphone production is likely to make a rebound next year," TrendForce said. "Smartphone brands are pushing out 5G models this year to maintain their market shares in the face of the recent demand slump."

TrendForce said that the share of 5G models in the annual total smartphone production is expected to rise to 19.2% for 2020.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officially launched its Internet Protocol television (IPTV) service in its Kerala circle on Thursday. The IPTV service has been launched on a trial basis in the select cities of the BSNL Kerala circle such as Ernakulam and Alappuzha. The trial period is said to be between August 27, 2020 to October 31, 2020. BSNL has highlighted that the users registering for the IPTV service before September 10, 2020, will receive an "early bird" offer. The BSNL IPTV service was initially unveiled in the Kerala circle earlier this year. However, the BSNL IPTV service remained a "non starter" in the region due to the lack of an "acceptable revenue share formula" between BSNL, IPTV service provider and the local cable operator (LCO).

BSNL Launches IPTV Service in Kerala

BSNL highlighted that its IPTV service will be offered through the Bharat Fiber platform in Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Thrissur. The operator said that its IPTV service will host 150 free-to-air (FTA) channels along with 150 pay channels.

Crucially, the users registering for the BSNL IPTV service before September 10, 2020 will be offered free access to the FTA pack for one month.

Soon, You Will Be Able to Switch Between Prepaid and Postpaid With Just an OTP

Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:54 PM PDT

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/prepaid-postpaid-connection-switch-process/292947/, Soon, You Will Be Able to Switch Between Prepaid and Postpaid With Just an OTP

Telecom subscribers in India will soon be able to switch between a prepaid connection to postpaid connection with just an OTP. A new report now says that the old process of switching to a postpaid connection from prepaid will be revised very soon. Right now, customers are required to fill the application form again for switching to postpaid from prepaid, however, it won’t be a necessary thing in the future. The guidelines for the revised process will be released within two weeks, according to a tweet by CNBC. Even the switching back to postpaid from prepaid is also a cumbersome process right now in India.

Revised Prepaid to Postpaid Connection Process Coming Soon

CNBC on August 25 tweeted that the process for switching a prepaid connection to postpaid will be revised within the next two weeks. Trai might release the new guidelines in the coming weeks and it is a much-needed one as well.

Going by the tweet, it can be observed that the prepaid customers will be verified via an OTP and there’s no requirement for them to fill the application form again. After verifying the OTP, customers will be required to upload the billing address on the respective operator’s website. So this process removes the hassle of going to the telco’s store to fill the application form or there’s no requirement to fill the form when the telco’s support guy brings the postpaid SIM card to your home for delivery.

Right now, telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are allowing users to switch from prepaid to postpaid by booking an online appointment, after which a representative will reach your home to begin the process. As noted, guidelines for the new process will be available in the next 1-2 weeks, but there’s no official update on the same.

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/best-quarterly-broadband-plans-operators/292885/, Broadband: Best Quarterly Plans You Can Choose From One Broadband, JioFiber, Foxcell and Hathway

Broadband internet is provided by many service providers in India. Some of the top internet providers are Connect Broadband, JioFiber, Foxcell, and Hathway. All of these internet service providers provide quarterly internet plans at different rates and with different benefits. Quarterly plans generally come with free installation and free router from the service provider, so most of the people tend to purchase this plan only. Let's take a look at all the best quarterly plans from these broadband service providers.

One Broadband

One Broadband provides quarterly internet plans only on its 1 Gbps speed plan. There are two 1 Gbps broadband plans which One Broadband provides to users, one comes with 500GB and the other one comes with 1,000GB data. The 500GB plan comes for Rs 5,247 and the 1,000GB plan comes with Rs 6,597.
