Prasar Bharati Announces Addition of New Channels on DD Free Dish Platform

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/prasad-bharti-dd-dish-new-channels/286919/, Prasar Bharati Announces Addition of New Channels on DD Free Dish Platform

Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster on Friday announced that two new channels have secured slots on its DD Free Dish platform, India's only free Direct to Home (DTH) service. The broadcaster announced that the slots secured by the two channels would be valid between August 6, 2020 to March 31, 2021. Prasar Bharati on July 20, 2020, had invited applications from TV channels for filling up the vacant slots on the DD Free Dish platform on a pro-rata basis. The broadcaster in its notice issued on July 20, highlighted that the 47th e-auction will be held on July 28, 2020, if required.

DD Free Dish Users will Receive Two Additional Channels Till March 31

Prasar Bharti on Friday announced that ABZY Movies and News State UP/Uttarakhand have secured the slots on the DD Free Dish platform till March 31, 2021.

ABZY Movies is a free-to-air (FTA) Hindi movies channel available on various DTH platforms and Cable TV services. Further, News State UP/UK is a Hindi news channel dedicated to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand region with the FTA channel also available on numerous DTH and cable TV platforms.

In its notice on July 20, the public broadcaster had set a reserve price of Rs 8.8 crores for the Hindi channels. Similarly, the Hindi, English and Punjabi news and current affairs channels were required to pay Rs 8 crores. Prasar Bharti also said that the successful bidders were required to make the payments in six monthly installments.

The e-auction was also open to all Hindi general entertainment channels along with other regional channels. However, Prasar Bharti had highlighted that the reserve price of Hindi GEC channels would be Rs 10.37 crores while the regional channels were required to shell out at least Rs 4 crores.

Prasar Bharti Could Hold Another E-Auction in the Upcoming Months

It has to be noted that the News State UP/Uttarakhand is already present on the DD Free Dish platform as the channel won a slot in the 46th e-auction held in June. While the 47th e-auction covered the vacant MPEG-2 slots, the 46th e-auction in June was for the vacant MPEG-4 slots. Prasar Bharti in late June announced that 15 channels secured slots in the 46th e-auction including four devotional channels and 11 news channels.

It is expected that the News State UP/Uttarakhand will vacate its MPEG-4 slot in the upcoming months paving way for the broadcaster to hold another e-auction in the upcoming months.

Bharti Airtel and VIL Questioned by Trai Over Differential Network Speeds

Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) and Bharti Airtel are both being questioned by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) over their differential broadband speed plans. Both the telcos were earlier questioned on their Priority 4G Network offer which claimed to give customers a priority in speed than any normal customer . Now the regulatory has further questioned both Bharti Airtel and VIL about their differential broadband speed plans. It has been discovered by Trai that both the telcos have stated something else and are offering something else entirely.

Bharti Airtel and VIL RED X and Platinum Plans Fooling Customers?

As per a report from ET Telecom, Reliance Jio had alerted to the regulatory body that VIL and Bharti Airtel are offering RED X and Platinum plans with a promise of higher data speed. Jio maintains its position on the statement that none of the telcos can guarantee faster speeds to their customers and if those claims are made, they are only misleading the customers.

Trai, in a letter to both VIL and Bharti Airtel wrote, "As per information available in Trai as filed by you, no wireless plan is committing any differential broadband speed, (but) it's seen that RedX and Platinum plans are not only providing priority on network but also committing higher speed."

Thus Trai had asked the telcos that why didn't they submit these plans under the 'new types of services' so that a proper examination of the plans could have taken place before they were launched into the market.

The regulator is checking if the faster speeds offer and Priority 4G Network offer is affecting the quality of speed for other users who don't have these particular benefits. One of the main questions asked by Trai to the telcos is what happens when there is data congestion in an area where both priority customers and non-priority customers are. The letters have been sent to both Bharti Airtel and VIL. The telcos have to respond by August 4 to all queries of the regulator.

Indian Telecom Networks Are Ill Equipped: ATC

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:16 AM PDT

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/indian-telecom-networks-ill-equipped-atc/286868/, Indian Telecom Networks Are Ill Equipped: ATC

Tom Bartlett, president and CEO of American Tower Corporation (ATC) in the earnings call on Thursday said that the Indian telecom networks are ill equipped to handle 4G levels of traffic for more than billion people. The company had earlier reported the second quarter financial results for the period ended June 30, 2020 with ATC recording an 1.2% increase in its total revenues to US$1,913 million. ATC said that its property revenue increased 2.4% to US$1,893 million while its net income increased 3.2% to US$448 million for the period ended June 30, 2020.

ATC Operates Over 75,000 Tower Sites in India

Bartlett said that the ATC has invested over US$5 billion in India and that the "market structure" in India "is now more rational."

"We believe the wireless industry has now completed a much needed and long awaited consolidation to enable the deployment of 4G technology throughout the country by the remaining carriers," Bartlett said in the earnings call.

ATC is said to own or operate over 75,000 tower sites throughout India that are used by various telecom operators including Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and BSNL.

"More recently, there have been pricing increases by all of the carriers in the marketplace, while the telecom regulator has indicated that it intends to be supportive of the carriers to rational spectrum policies and the Indian government continues to stress its Digital India initiative," Bartlett said.

However, Bartlett said that the crucial near-term issue "that needs to get sorted out in the marketplace" revolves around the Supreme Court decision on the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) matter. The Supreme Court of India is soon expected to make a decision on AGR payment issue particularly on the timeline as to when the telecom operators can clear the dues.

"The Indian consumer has proven to have a tremendous appetite for mobile data with average smartphone usage per customer of well 10-gigabits per month, even before the impacts of COVID-19," Bartlett said.

Crucially, Bartlett said that the majority of the wireless users in India are using legacy technologies over 4G networks and that the networks are ill equipped to handle current loads of traffic.

"To get those networks ready, we continue to believe that significant levels of incremental network spending are necessary accompanied by material level of network densification," Bartlett said.

ATC Expects Delayed Payments from Vodafone Idea Over AGR Issue

It was also highlighted on the earnings call that ATC have factored in approximately US$65 million in "additional bad debt assumptions" for its full financial year.

"This is primarily attributable to the expected timing of payments from the government owned carrier BSNL, as well as the possibility that Vodafone Idea future payments become interrupted or delayed as they weigh a final outcome of the ongoing AGR court proceedings in India," Rod Smith, executive VP, CFO of ATC, said in the earnings call.

Crucially, Bartlett said that the company expects Vodafone Idea to continue its operations in India.

"I mean the government has definitely advocated for having three strong players in the marketplace," he said. "They've made some sizable good base installments, as best I can tell in terms of what is owed in the marketplace. They are aggressively trying to restructure to save cost and compete in the marketplace."

Bartlett highlighted that ATC are working with Vodafone Idea over the payments "as we would be working with any customer who is going through a similar situation."

"But kind of given the direction of the government, given what we are seeing in the marketplace, again we remain optimistic and cautiously optimistic about their ability to continue and to grow," Bartlett said.

The company said that it remains optimistic about the Indian telecom market and that India recorded "double digits" growth for ATC.

"Carrier spending continues to be strong, building out their networks," Bartlett said. "They continue to make the network investments to support the overall usage demands."

It was also highlighted in the earnings call that the ATC is continuing to expand its presence in India through the Digital Village program that provides internet access to unconnected villages. The company is said to have connected over 150 villages with "more in development."

"We are proud to be making a difference in the areas of digital literacy, e-learning, tower help, as well as providing enhanced access to career opportunities in many rural Indian communities," Bartlett said.

UPI Transactions in India to Undergo Major Changes Soon, What You Should Know

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/upi-transactions-in-india-changes-soon/286584/, UPI Transactions in India to Undergo Major Changes Soon, What You Should Know

upi-transactions-in-india-changes-soon

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has made it very easy for people to transact money with each other. Be it for personal transactions or business transactions, it can be done instantly and without any extra cost. UPI is regulated and governed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI). The regulatory body has made an announcement for a change that will soon come to the UPI apps. The announcement has come as a shock for all the major apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Keep reading ahead to understand how it might affect you.

Capped Transactions for UPI Apps

Every UPI app will have a certain capped limit for the transactions which can happen through them. In case any of the apps violate the limit set by the regulator, they will be penalised. The most affected apps due to these rules will be Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. These are the leading UPI apps in the country. So how will the cap limit work for these apps?

There are three major rules that you need to understand. The first rule is, none of the UPI apps should have more than a share of 50% UPI transactions done through them if it is their first year of operations. In case it is the app's second year, they cannot process more than 40% of the UPI transactions. For the third year, the apps cannot have a share of more than 33% UPI transactions.

The details for execution will be discussed with each of the companies in detail so that there is no confusion regarding the rules to anyone. So how does this affect the end-user aka you?

In the current scenario, Google Pay is on top of all the other UPI apps in India by having 42% of the market share. Second to Google Pay is PhonePe with 35% of the market share followed by Paytm which has a relatively smaller market share between 15%-20%.

So once Google Pay reaches the 50% threshold, it won't be able to accept more transactions or customers. New users might not be able to sign up with the app or make transactions. When that limit is reduced the next year, even some of the old users might have to opt for some other platform for online transactions with UPI. More details about how it will affect the end-user will clear up with time.

railwire-witnesses-healthy-growth-subscribers-four-months

Earlier this year, Google India announced the end of its five-year-long partnership with RailTel. Google and RailTel together provided free Wi-Fi to passengers at the Railway stations across India. But the ending of that partnership hasn't slowed down the growth of RailWire. RailWire is a broadband initiative of RailTel. RailTel has managed to grow and add one and a half times more subscribers in the last four months. The PSU has become a very influential company and has empowered 4,000 entrepreneurs till now. One of the good things for the company is that it is continuing to see growth in the number of subscribers. It provides Wi-Fi services in over 5,670 stations across the country.

RailWire Adding Subscribers Due to 4,000 Partners Across the Country

RailWire provides broadband internet service with last-mile connectivity to small businesses and individual households. One of the reasons why RailWire has been adding subscribers at a good rate is its 4,000 partners across the country spreading the service rapidly. Along with that, the company is also focused on providing broadband services in Tier 3 cities and rural areas which creates a bigger market for it. The number of subscribers added in the last four month by RailWire is 70,000 across India.

Puneet Chawla, CMD of RailTel said, "RailWire is a collaborative model and has created an ecosystem where we focus on helping local service providers generate more revenue. RailWire, with our more than 4,000 partners across the country, is helping affordable broadband services to reach underserved areas such as the Tier 3 cities and the rural hinterland."

RailTel has been helping a lot of broadband providers. Some of the people who live in small towns and cities have managed to grow their average revenue per user (ARPU) by 10 times by becoming a partner of RailWire. Chawla also said that the partners of the PSU strongly believe in the vision of RailWire and endorse it without any intentions of switching to the lucrative upstream broadband service.

Broadband: Steps You Can Take to Boost Your Internet Connectivity

Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:34 PM PDT

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/broadband-boost-internet-connectivity-steps/286779/, Broadband: Steps You Can Take to Boost Your Internet Connectivity

Broadband internet connection can be boosted with a few simple things. Speed and stability are the two things that we look at when we go for a broadband connection. What is worse than your movie buffering is the slow loading of web pages. It is outright frustrating and a pain to go through. Sure, you can take help of your internet service provider. But what happens when you can't reach them or they can't help you out for some reason? Don't worry, there are a few things that you can do to boost your broadband internet connection yourself.

Check Broadband Speed

The first thing that you should do is to check the speed of your broadband internet connection. There are many ways you can check your speed in. But the best way to do it would be to use a speed test app. You can simply download the app on your smartphone and connect it with your broadband network and run a speed test. It will give you both the download speed and upload speed of your broadband connection. This speed will help you compare the speed that you are getting now and the speed that you get after resolving the broadband problems.

Reset Your Modem

After you have checked the speed of your internet, note it down somewhere and then reset your modem. Resetting it up would clear all of the old data of your broadband's router and remove any network issues that were there because of the old settings. Along with this, your modem will automatically download all the firmware updates if there are any.

Broadband Router Reconfiguration

Use your computer browser to reconfigure the settings of your broadband router. Sometimes router settings are the reason why your internet is slow. If you don't know how to reconfigure the settings of your router then take the help of someone who does. In case there is no one who can help you with that, you can refer to the router handbook for guidance. There might be mentioned all the steps to open the configuration menu and how to resolve the issue if there is any.

Router's Location

One of the rookie mistakes that people make while setting up a broadband router in their home is place it on the wrong part of the house. Signals of routers can get disrupted especially when they are 2.4GHz band routers. That is why keep it in a pretty open space of your home so that the signals can travel freely and ensure that it is kept close to the place where you access your internet from.

Clean Up PC

Sometimes it the fault of your PC and all the unnecessary files that are inside it which slows down your computer. There are a lot of things that you don't want inside your computer but still have it. So instead of hoarding those unnecessary files, get rid of them. After you are done with all these things, run an Internet speed again and see if you get a higher speed than before. If you do, that means your problem is solved.
