The Indian government is in a spree of banning Chinese apps in the country. Just a few days back, the government banned a total of 59 Chinese apps which were deemed unsafe for the users. These apps were a threat to the privacy of millions of Indians. Xiaomi's Mi Community app was banned in India as well. Today, the government has banned yet another app of Xiaomi. This time, it is the Mi Browser Pro which came under the axe. It is the default browsing app which comes pre-installed in all the Xiaomi, Poco, and Redmi devices. Mi Browser Pro No More in IndiaUsers in India won't be able to access Mi Browser Pro anymore. The government has banned the internet browsing app because it was a threat to the privacy of Indian users. Just a few months back, another browser of Xiaomi, Mi Mint was suspected to track the browsing data of a user even in incognito mode. It raised a lot of privacy concerns. The Mi Browser Pro is the default browser which comes in all of the devices which run on MIUI. There were some really useful features inside the browser such as ad-blocker and the feature to download videos directly from social media websites. But there is nothing to worry about, users of Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices can use Google Chrome. Google Chrome also comes pre-installed in all the smartphones with MIUI. There is a chance though that the users will be able to see the browser back again in the Play Store very soon. Xiaomi is communicating with the government about the doubts and issues and working on clearing them. The company has said that no user data is being taken out of India so there is nothing to worry about. Xiaomi won't be too worried about the ban of the app as it won't directly affect the sales of its smartphones. There are many browsers which people can choose from so it won't be a very big issue. Some other apps were banned today along with Mi Browser Pro are — AirBrush, Meipei, NetEase, BoXxCAM, Baidu Search, Heroes War, SlidePlus and Search Lite. | Disney+ Hits 60 Million Subscribers, Star Streaming Service Set for Launch in 2021 Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:28 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/disney-plus-60-million-subscriber-base/287460/, Disney+ Hits 60 Million Subscribers, Star Streaming Service Set for Launch in 2021
The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday said in its third quarter earnings call that the Disney+ service has crossed over 60.5 million subscribers. The Disney+ service was introduced in November, 2019 initially in the US market before the company expanded the service to international markets like Western Europe, India and Japan in 2020. In India, the company launched its Disney+ service on April 3 by enhancing its existing Hotstar service. The Disney+ Hotstar is said to offer over 100,000 hours of TV shows and movies in eight languages along with rights for major sporting events including the Indian Premier League. Disney+ Hotstar Accounts for 15% of Overall Disney+ Subscriber BaseChristine McCarthy, senior executive VP and CFO of the Walt Disney Company said that the Disney+ Hotstar comprised about 15% of the company's quarter-end subscriber base. McCarthy earlier said that the Disney+ had a paid subscriber base of 57.3 million at the end of its third quarter which indicates that Disney+ Hotstar has around 8.6 million subscribers. "Disney+’s overall ARPU this quarter was $4.62," McCarthy said. "However, excluding Disney+ Hotstar, it was $5.31." It was also announced that the Disney+ Hotstar would be rolled out to the Indonesia market on September 5, 2020. "By year-end, Disney+ will be available in nine of the top 10 economies in the world," Bob Chapek, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, said in the earnings call. Chapek also said that the three streaming services of the Walt Disney Company including Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ has a combined subscriber base of over 100 million paid subscribers. Despite the increase in its subscriber base, the company said that the operating losses in its direct-to-consumer and International segment were approximately US$140 million higher as compared to previous year quarter. McCarthy said that the operating losses in the direct-consumer and International segment were driven by the expansion of the Disney+ service during the third quarter, partially offset by improved results at Star. "At Star, higher results reflect lower programming costs, partially offset by lower advertising revenue," McCarthy said. "Both of these drivers reflect the absence of cricket in the third quarter including a shift in rights costs for the Indian Premier League which we expect to be recognized in future quarters and the absence of costs for the quadrennial ICC World Cup which aired in the prior-year quarter." Disney Set to Announce New Streaming Platform Under Star BrandCrucially, it was announced in the earnings call that the company would introduce a new streaming service under the Star brand in the calendar year 2021. Chapek shared the development in the earnings call while also highlighting that the platform would include titles from ABC Studios, Fox Television, FX, Freeform, Searchlight and 20th Century Studios. "In many markets, the offering will be fully integrated into our established Disney+ platform from both a marketing and a technology perspective, and it will be distributed under the Star brand which has been successfully utilized by the company for other general entertainment platform launches, particularly with Disney+ Hotstar in India," Chapek said. However, Chapek did not share the pricing details nor the countries where the company would launch the Star streaming service. Chapek said that the Walt Disney Company would host another Investor Day conference "in the coming months" where the company would share additional details about the Star streaming service. Unlike Hulu, it was said that the Star streaming service will not aggregate third-party content. Further, Chapek highlighted that the company did not plan on expanding its Hulu service due to the lack of its brand awareness outside the US market. "I think it’s important to look at the differences in how we have plan on going into the market," Chapek said. "So this gives us the ability to market this under the Disney umbrella and have synergies with our existing platform. So that’s our basic rationale there." Chapek also said that the company has not planned the hybrid model of the advertising video on demand (AVOD) and subscription video on demand (SVOD) for the Star service as with Hulu. "But we’ve got obviously similar capabilities as we’ve got to Disney+ if we ever so chose to do that, but we’ve got no plans to do that now," Chapek said. The preview build will be released on August 10. After the expert developers remove all the major bugs, the OxygenOS 11 open beta will be released as well. It will be just like the HydrogenOS 11 which will be released for China. OxygenOS 11 to Bring Some Fresh Changes to DesignPete Lau said that OnePlus will be bringing some fresh design elements and some very highly anticipated features with the OxygenOS 11. All the new features introduced are taken directly from the community's requests. There is an Open Ears forum as well as IDEAS platform launched by OnePlus earlier this year. It helps the Chinese smartphone manufacturer to understand what people want from their smartphones. The OxygenOS 11 will be super smooth to navigate through, will come with a clean UI and will offer a ton of customisations. There is no confirmation about when the stable update of OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 will come out but one thing is for sure, it won't take very long. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has expanded its 200 Mbps plan dubbed as "1500GB CS55" to more circles across India. The state-run operator introduced the 200 Mbps plan in early 2020 in the Chennai and Telangana circles on a promotional basis. While the operator no longer offers the plan in the Chennai circle, it has since expanded the plan to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and recently re-introduced the plan in the Telangana circle. However, the operator had regularized the 200 Mbps plan in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry circle while BSNL offers the plan in the Telangana circle till October 19, 2020. BSNL Expands 200 Mbps Plan to 3 Additional Circles Across IndiaThe operator has now expanded the 1500GB CS55 plan to Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Lakshadweep circles on a promotional basis. BSNL on its Bharat Fiber site had highlighted that the users in the three circles can subscribe to the 1500GB CS55 plan till October 5, 2020. The 1500GB CS55 plan enables users to browse up to 200 Mbps speed till 1500GB with the operator capping the speeds to 2 Mbps upon reaching the limit. Further, the operator enables users subscribed to the 1500GB CS55 plan to make unlimited local and STD calls to any network across India. | Poco Teases New Smartphone to Compete With OnePlus Nord Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:48 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/poco-new-smartphone-oneplus-nord/287393/, Poco Teases New Smartphone to Compete With OnePlus Nord
Poco time and again comes out with new budget smartphones. The latest smartphone which was launched by Poco in India was Poco M2 Pro last month. The Poco M2 Pro was launched with Snapdragon 720G, 33W fast-charging support and more features for just Rs 13,999. Now the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is soon going to come out with yet another smartphone. There is no confirmation from Poco about the name of the new device or the date on which it is slated to launch. But there is one thing, the smartphone might give OnePlus Nord a strong competition. New Poco Device to be a Threat for OnePlus NordOnePlus Nord was launched on July 21 in three different variants. The two variants of the smartphone with 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB were supposed to go on sale from August 4, 2020, but the date was postponed to August 6, 2020. Angus Kai Ho Ng, the global spokesperson for Poco tweeted, "OnePlus Nord or….wait for the new Poco?" This tweet had a hashtag – #POCOcomingsoon. To this, the official account of Poco also replied and confirmed that a new device will be making its way to the market very soon. There are some speculations about the new device from Poco being the Poco F2. But there is no solid information to confirm this. But it could be another smartphone – Poco C3. Some details about the Poco C3 were spotted in the Bluetooth SIG listings. It carries the model number M2006C3MI. An interesting thing to note is that the model number of Redmi 9C isn't much different from that of C3's. Redmi 9C's model number is M2006C3MG. This could mean if the new smartphone that was hinted in the tweet is Poco C3, then it could be the rebranded version of Redmi 9C. The only thing is, Poco C3 will be priced way too lower than the OnePlus Nord. So there is a good chance that the new smartphone hinted isn't Poco C3. But there is one thing which could happen and that is the new Poco device could be a rebranded version of a Redmi device. | Vodafone Idea Network Expansion Plan Might Suffer Due to Telecom Gear Order Delays Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:28 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-network-expansion-plan/287158/, Vodafone Idea Network Expansion Plan Might Suffer Due to Telecom Gear Order Delays
Vodafone Idea is aggressively opting for cost-cutting measures to reduce the financial pressure. The telco is believed to let go nearly 1,500 to 2,000 permanent employees across different levels to ensure financial stability. Also, Vodafone Idea has reduced its telecom circles from 22 to 10 for better operational and managerial efficiency. As reported by ET Telecom, telecom gear vendors such as Huawei, ZTE, Nokia and Ericsson are delaying new orders of 4G equipment from Vodafone Idea due to fear of not receiving payments as the telco is already under heavy financial distress. Due to non-availability of telecom equipment, Vodafone Idea is facing trouble in expansion plans which are leading to more subscriber losses. Vodafone Idea Not Getting Bank GuaranteesVodafone Idea is facing difficulty in paying employees salaries and meet operating expenses. Mukul Rohatgi, who represented Vodafone Idea, addressed the supreme bench and stated that the telco could not secure bank guarantees as it is under heavy financial distress. However, European telecom gear vendors such as Ericsson and Nokia are seeking bank guarantees against new orders which they have received in previous orders. As of Chinese telecom gear vendors, Huawei and ZTE have flexible payments terms. But the vendors are sceptical about the ability of Vodafone Idea to clear pending payments which is resulting in delayed delivery of new equipment. As per industry estimates, Vodafone Idea has to clear around Rs 3,500 crore and Rs 4,000 crore cumulatively for telecom equipment supplies. Chinese telecom gear vendor Huawei stated that the company support Vodafone Idea for their world's largest integration and capacity. However, an unknown senior official has addressed that there have been payment delays from Vodafone Idea. Vodafone Idea Needs New Equipment for Capacity ExpansionVodafone Idea is aggressively looking out for new equipment and technologies for capacity expansion as the telco is being vulnerable to subscribers losses due to delayed delivery of equipment. The telco is focusing on OpenRAN technology vendors to solve the situation with traditional vendors and enjoy cost benefits. | Bharti Airtel to Soon Launch Xstream Fiber Plus Mesh Plan for Broadband Users Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:37 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-xstream-fiber-plus-mesh-plan/287324/, Bharti Airtel to Soon Launch Xstream Fiber Plus Mesh Plan for Broadband Users
Demand for broadband internet is increasing day by day. One thing that none of us likes is a disturbance in the connection of the internet if we are a little far from the router. Not every part of the home can provide the same kind of connectivity and speed. To solve this problem, there are many things that a user can do. But one of the best ways to solve is to get a mesh router for your home. Bharti Airtel's Xstream Fiber has become one of the most popular broadband services in India. The telco looks to solve the customer’s connectivity problems in the same way as suggested above. Bharti Airtel is soon going to launch an Xstream Fiber Plus Mesh plan for the users. Airtel Xstream Fiber Plus Mesh PlanXstream Fiber provides four plans to users. But none of the plans from the telco come with a mesh router. For the unaware, a mesh router is an additional router which is connected to the main router placed in your home and kept in the other part so that internet coverage and connectivity around the house can be improved.
Now Airtel will provide such a mesh router with its broadband plans. The telco is going to avail a new plan called Airtel Xstream Fiber Plus Mesh plan very soon. According to Airtel app's description on the Google Play Store, "What's the Fiber Plus Mesh Plan – A super plan which comes with a Mesh device that will increase the broadband coverage at your home. Now, this plan like all broadband plans will be visible in plan recommendations. You can pre-pay & pick this plan." There are options for users to get their own mesh routers in case they want to. In fact, some of the users are already doing that. So it will be interesting to see just what other value can Airtel add with its new plan. Is it going to make the mesh router available at a cheaper rate or going to offer more than one mesh router, only time will tell. The telco hasn't confirmed any details about the plan's cost or if the mesh router will be added to all the pre-existing plans as well or not. As per the Airtel's website terms and conditions, users will be availed with the mesh service only when they purchase a plan of up to one year. Along with that, if the user doesn't opt for a plan after the ending of the first year and ends the service before the minimum period of two years, then Airtel will take back its mesh device. The listing is live in Play Store but the telco is yet to provide any more official details about the plan and unveil it on its website.
