Reliance Jio recently announced the much-awaited JioFiber broadband plans with unlimited benefits to grab market share. When JioFiber originally launched its broadband plans back in 2019, the company was criticised heavily as the plans came with FUP limit. However, that has changed now. JioFiber now has broadband plans starting at Rs 399 and the majority of the plans have unlimited data (3.3TB per month). Now, this makes JioFiber an interesting proportion when put against the likes of BSNL, ACT Fibernet and Airtel Xstream Fiber. Right after JioFiber announcing its new plans, Bharti Airtel also introduced updated Airtel Xstream Fiber plans which also ship with unlimited data benefit alongside starting at just Rs 499 per month. JioFiber now has a total of seven plans- Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Diamond+, Platinum and Titanium. The premium JioFiber Titanium plan comes with 1 Gbps speeds, 6.6TB data per month, unlimited voice calling and free access to 12 OTT apps. The free access to OTT apps makes JioFiber a unique offering on its own. For example, JioFiber users will get Netflix subscription worth Rs 499 per month at no extra cost, however, the company is also providing an option to upgrade to the Netflix Premium plan by paying Rs 300 extra every month. Airtel Xstream Fiber, on the other hand, is not providing Netflix subscription benefit, which is underwhelming. Watch our YouTube video to check out the revised JioFiber broadband plans in detail. Earlier we reported that the legacy plans such as Diamond+, Platinum and Titanium are currently available for subscription on a monthly basis with the operator no longer offering the legacy plans for long term subscription. However, Reliance Jio highlighted that the users subscribing to the monthly Diamond+ and Platinum pack will receive Standard Netflix subscription. The newly born brand ‘Vi‘ today announced the result of the world’s largest network integration between brands Vodafone and Idea. The telco announced the launch of GIGAnet and said it is India’s strongest 4G network which will enable users to stay connected all the time. Furthermore, the telco assures it has set up a world-class network with the largest spectrum portfolio, huge capacity, and built on many principles of 5G architecture that help in delivering a superior network experience. Announced back in March 2018, Vodafone Idea network integration was supposed to complete in early 2019, but it took more than two years. After the completion of network integration, Vodafone Idea recently announced a new single brand identity ‘Vi.’ Vodafone Idea GIGAnet: What Exactly Is It?According to Vi, GIGAnet is the result of the largest network integration completed in record time and first-of-its-kind spectrum refarming exercise in the world. “Deploying India's largest AI-powered ma-MIMOs sites, GIGAnet has India's largest deployment of universal cloud, making it the strongest, future-ready, new-age, dynamic network of these times, to accommodate the enormous amount of data traffic that the post-COVID-19 world has seen,” said Vi in a press release. Basically, GIGAnet is Vi’s version of calling its network. GIGAnet is also said to be future-fit and promises a stronger, better and faster network. That said, the company did not announce any new additions to its overall network. Furthermore, VIL reassures that it will continue to invest in 4G to increase coverage and capacity. To showcase GIGAnet from Vi and its introduction to mobile phone users in India, the company has come up with a campaign on TV and digital platforms today. “The campaign portrays GIGAnet as the network that is in tune with the needs of the customers in the ongoing disruptive times. A network structured to help customers move ahead in life, for a better today and a brighter tomorrow,” said Vi. | Regulatory Interventions Not Required for OTT Services: Trai Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:06 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/regulatory-interventions-requirement-trai-ott/297257/, Regulatory Interventions Not Required for OTT Services: Trai
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Monday said that the regulatory interventions are not required "in respect of issues related with privacy and security" of Over-the-Top (OTT) services. The authority on Monday released its recommendations on the Regulatory Framework for OTT Communication Services after a "multistage consultation process." The Department of Telecommunications in 2016, sought the recommendations of Trai on net neutrality "including traffic management and economic, security and privacy aspects of OTT services." Trai on its part issued multiple consultation papers including one in 2018 that raised multiple issues such as "similarity and substitutability" of telecom service providers and OTT services. Trai Against Regulatory Interventions into OTT ServicesThe authority in its recommendations said that the developments related to OTT services "shall be monitored" and that the "intervention as felt necessary" shall be done at applicable time. "Market forces may be allowed to respond to the situation without prescribing any regulatory intervention," Trai said in its recommendations. The authority in its recommendations said that the telecom industry has witnessed "exponential growth in data traffic" and that the operators launched "traffic plans with unlimited voice usage" as part of the data packs. Trai said that the spike in data traffic shows that "with the increase in usage of OTT, traffic of telecom services providers" have also increased. "Therefore, any regulatory prescription in haste may leave [an] adverse impact on industry as a whole," Trai said in its recommendations. TRAI Might Later Relook Into Regulatory Framework of OTT ServicesThe authority said that several security and privacy related issues were raised during its consultation process. However, Trai said that it observed that the "architecture of OTT communication services is evolving to protect the end users." Further, it was highlighted that the "encryption technology is deployed in a manner which prevents intermediaries from getting the communication in a clear text or in an intelligible form." The authority said that the "imposition of any requirements" would result in change in the architecture of OTT services "which might not provide same level of protection as offered today." Crucially, it was said that the issue "may be looked into afresh when more clarity emerges in the international jurisdictions" with Trai particularly highlighting the study initiated by International Telecommunication Union (ITU). "It is not an opportune moment to recommend a comprehensive regulatory framework for various aspects of services referred to as OTT services, beyond the extant laws and regulations prescribed presently," Trai said in its recommendations. | BSNL Employees Continue to Push for 4G Services Posted: 14 Sep 2020 05:03 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-employees-push-4g-services/297237/, BSNL Employees Continue to Push for 4G Services
The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of BSNL Employees Union (BSNLEU) on Friday asked the BSNL unions and associations to "create compulsions on the government" for removing "road-blocks" in launch of BSNL 4G service. According to the BSNLEU, its CEC held a two day online meeting on September 10 and September 11, 2020, passing resolutions on multiple issues including the "denial of 4G technology" to BSNL. The CEC is said to have expressed its "deep anguish over the unbearable delay being caused" in the launch of BSNL 4G service. BSNL Revival "Unimaginable" Without 4G ServiceIt was highlighted that the operator is "already lagging" four years behind the private operators due to lack of 4G technology. The CEC is said to have highlighted that the BSNL revival is "unimaginable" without the launch of BSNL 4G service. However, it was noted that the "developments taking place in connection" with the launch of BSNL 4G service to be "very disturbing." The CEC said that the operator could have converted its 49,300 4G compatible base transceiver stations (BTSs) into 4G BTSs by spending around Rs 1500 crore. Crucially, it was said that the operator could have procured 15,000 more BTSs through the tender by placing an add-on order. "BSNL Management could have launched it's 4G service, even without making fresh procurement of equipments," the CEC of BSNLEU highlighted on Friday. "It is an undeniable fact that the BSNL Management had pathetically failed in carrying out this task." Further, the CEC noted that the tender floated by BSNL to procure 4G equipments at the cost of Rs 9300 crore was cancelled "as per directive of the government." "It is laughable that, BSNL has been accused by the Commerce Ministry, that the Company has floated tender to procure 4G equipments from multinational vendors, without giving any opportunity to the domestic vendors," the CEC of BSNLEU highlighted on Friday. The CEC of the BSNLEU said that the Department of Commerce nor the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) "were able to tell which domestic vendor is manufacturing 4G equipments with proven technology." It emerged in late June that ITI, a PSU engaged in the manufacturing of telecom and defense equipment had set its sights on BSNL 4G tenders. The company had earlier signed an MoU with Tech Mahindra for the new generation wireless technology. R M Agarwal, CMD of ITI in a video interview to CNBC TV18 had said that the MoU was largely dedicated to the BSNL 4G tender. As part of the partnership, ITI will productionise 4G upgradable to 5G Radio Access Network. Tech Mahindra is said to be tasked with the responsibility of providing the software IPs, implementation and integration services along with the operations and maintenance services. "Media reports say that the ITI has tied up with Tech Mahindra to produce and supply 4G equipments to BSNL," the CEC of BSNLEU highlighted on Friday. "However, it is a fact that, neither ITI nor Tech Mahindra is presently possessing the capability of manufacturing and supplying 4G equipments to BSNL." Present Condition of BSNL is Very Disturbing: CEC of BSNLEUThe CEC of BSNLEU said that the operator can now neither procure 4G equipments from local vendors nor from international vendors and that the "present condition of BSNL is very disturbing." "BSNLEU strongly believes that a conspiracy has been hatched to deny 4G equipments to BSNL and thereby to sabotage it's revival," it noted. "BSNLEU is of the firm view that, the cancellation of BSNL's 4G tender is only to clip it’s wings, so that the telecom PSU does not offer stiff competition to Reliance Jio. This can be construed as a part of the government's overall strategy of aiding Reliance Jio to monopolise the telecom sector." The CEC of the BSNLEU through the meeting is said to have decided to "organize a campaign programme" pushing for the launch of BSNL 4G service. "This CEC meeting calls upon the Central Headquarters of BSNLEU to take immediate steps to unite all the unions and associations for organising a very powerful campaign programme among the employees and among the general public, in the months of September and October, which should culminate in a strike action thereafter," it said. | Airtel Xstream Fiber Set to Launch in 5 More Cities Posted: 14 Sep 2020 03:33 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-xstream-fiber-five-cities-launch/297212/, Airtel Xstream Fiber Set to Launch in 5 More Cities
Bharti Airtel, the second largest telecom operator and wired broadband service provider in India highlighted on its dedicated Xstream Fiber portal that its services would soon launch in five more cities across India. The development is on the heels of ITI Limited announcing in early September that Airtel had issued a Letter of Intent for works related to its Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) expansion in eight circles. ITI said that the work would involve laying of optical fibre backbone for broadband connectivity in eight circles. Crucially, Airtel nor ITI highlighted the eight circles currently said to witness Xstream Fiber expansion. Airtel Set to Soon Launch Xstream Fiber Services in Five More CitiesThe second largest wired broadband service provider in India on its dedicated portal highlighted that the company will be "launching soon" its services in Badaun, Bulandshahr, Mathura, Siddharthnagar and Vrindavan. The company has highlighted that the users will be charged Rs 1000 as wiring charges for up to 100 metres at the time of installation. The wiring charges indicate that Airtel is launching its services through a local cable operator (LCO). It has to be noted that the company offers its Xstream Fiber services through LCOs in several cities across India. The users in the LCO cities are required to pay wiring charges in addition to the activation fees priced at Rs 1000 for monthly plan. The wiring charges above 100 meters are said to be priced at Rs 8 per meter. The five cities including Mathura joins a list of over 50 cities with a "launching soon" tag on Airtel Xstream Fiber portal. Airtel since early 2020 had its "launching soon" tag on several cities across India with the company in late June launching its services in over 15 cities. The company currently has not listed a timeline for the launch of its Xstream Fiber services in the cities with the "launching soon" tag. Airtel Xstream Fiber App Provides Data Usage InformationMeanwhile, the Airtel Xstream Fiber app on iOS and Android has now emerged as a crucial component to monitor data usage. The company in early September revamped its Xstream Fiber plans offering users "unlimited" data and over-the-top (OTT) benefits. It was later revealed that the unlimited data plans carry a fair usage policy of 3333GB with the Airtel capping the speeds to 1 Mbps upon user reaching the data limit. Further the operator revised the data balance section on the Airtel Thanks app that enabled users to monitor the data usage with the company now highlighting that users are on the "Unlimited GB" plan. However, the Airtel Xstream Fiber app that enables users to access the WiFi router features continues to provide the data balance and other profile details such as total data available to user. | BSNL Bharat Fiber Rs 499 Plan with 300GB Data No Longer Listed in Multiple Circles Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:21 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-bharat-fiber-rs499-plan-removed/297177/, BSNL Bharat Fiber Rs 499 Plan with 300GB Data No Longer Listed in Multiple Circles
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has removed its "300GB Plan CS337" promotional pack from its multiple circles across India. The 300GB Plan CS337 was introduced by the operator on a promotional basis in late 2019 in multiple BSNL circles across India including Kolkata, West Bengal, Sikkim and Rajasthan. While BSNL in December said that the 300GB Plan CS337 will be available in its multiple circles for a period of 90 days, the operator had consistently extended the plan. In early June, BSNL said that the 300GB Plan CS337 has been extended till September 9, 2020. BSNL No Longer Lists its 300GB Plan CS337 in Multiple CirclesThe 300GB Plan CS337 enabled BSNL users to browse up to 40 Mbps speed till 300GB with the operator restricting the speeds to 1 Mbps upon reaching the limit. The users subscribed to the 300GB Plan CS337 were also provided unlimited local and STD calls to any network across India. The 300GB Plan CS337 pack carried a price tag of Rs 499 per month with the operator enabling the plan in multiple BSNL circles including Kolkata, West Bengal, Sikkim and Rajasthan. It has to be noted that BSNL continues to offer a similar plan in the Odisha circle dubbed as Bharat Fiber 300GB CUL CS346 plan. The users subscribed to the Bharat Fiber 300GB CUL CS346 plan can browse up to 40 Mbps speed till 300GB with BSNL restricting the speeds to 2 Mbps upon reaching the limit. Further, the operator enables users subscribed to the Bharat Fiber 300GB CUL CS346 plan to make unlimited local and STD calls to any network across India. BSNL 3GB CUL Bharat Fiber Plan Emerges as Base BSNL Plan in Multiple BSNL CirclesBSNL in its Kolkata, West Bengal, Sikkim and Rajasthan circles now presents its "3GB CUL Bharat Fiber" as its entry level monthly plan to its users. The 3GB CUL Bharat Fiber plan enables BSNL users in Kolkata, West Bengal and Sikkim circles to browse up to 10 Mbps speed till 3GB per day. The users subscribed to the 3GB CUL Bharat Fiber will have their speeds restricted to 1 Mbps upon reaching the 3GB per day limit. Further, BSNL enables users subscribed to the 3GB CUL Bharat Fiber plan to make unlimited local and STD calls to any network across India. However, the BSNL users in the Rajasthan circle subscribed to the 3GB CUL Bharat Fiber will have the maximum speeds capped at 8 Mbps instead of 10 Mbps found in other BSNL circles. It remains to be seen whether BSNL re-introduces its Rs 499 plan with 300GB data limits or provides a new entry level plan in its Kolkata, West Bengal, Sikkim and Rajasthan circles. The operator in majority of its circles offers an Fibro 100GB per Month CUL plan enabling users to browse up to 20 Mbps speed till 100GB. The users subscribed to the Fibro 100GB per Month CUL plan will have the speeds restricted to 2 Mbps upon users reaching the limit. | Airtel is Offering Customers 1GB Data for Just Rs 4.15 With Unlimited Calling Posted: 13 Sep 2020 09:04 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-1gb-data-unlimited-calling-price/297079/, Airtel is Offering Customers 1GB Data for Just Rs 4.15 With Unlimited Calling
Bharti Airtel is the second biggest telecom company in India. It offers a variety of prepaid and postpaid plans to the customers. If you are looking for a certain kind of plan with specific benefits, chances are that you will get it with Airtel. There are many top-up vouchers which come solely with talk time benefits or data benefits. The thing is, there is something for every kind of customer with Airtel. If you don't know already, Airtel is offering a prepaid plan where it offers customers 1GB data for just Rs 4.15. Not only that, but the customers also get unlimited voice calling with the plan. More on the prepaid plan ahead. 1GB Data for Just Rs 4.15 With AirtelWith Airtel, the customers can get 1GB data for just Rs 4.15. If you haven't guessed which prepaid plan it is yet, let us tell you. It is the Rs 698 prepaid plan. For the unaware, the Rs 698 prepaid plan from Airtel offers customers 2GB of daily data along with unlimited calling. There is also 100 SMS/day availed to the customers. The Rs 698 prepaid plan comes with a validity of 84 days. Not only this, but there are other benefits included in the plan. The customer is eligible for getting a free subscription of Airtel Xstream Premium along with a 1-year subscription of Shaw Academy. There is also Wynk Music, free Hellotunes, and Rs 150 cashback on FASTag transaction. If you compare this plan with what other telcos offer, here is how things fare out. Starting with Reliance Jio, the telco offers its 2GB daily data plan with 84 days validity for Rs 599. It is certainly cheaper than what Airtel is providing. So essentially, the customer gets 1GB of data with the Rs 599 plan from Reliance Jio for just Rs 3.5. It is quite lesser than the Airtel's Rs 4.15 for 1GB data. Coming to the same plan from Vodafone Idea which is now rebranded as VI, it costs customers Rs 699. So this Rs 699 plan is originally supposed to bring customers 2GB daily data every day for 84 days. But with the 'Double Data Offer' of VI, the data benefit has doubled for every day. So instead of 2GB daily data, the customers get 4GB data every day for the 84 days. This plan is just Rs 1 more expensive than the Airtel's Rs 698 plan. But compared to Jio's Rs 599 plan, it is Rs 100 more. Yet with this plan, the customers get 1GB data for just Rs 2.08. So clearly, VI is the cheapest option until the time the double data offer is provided with the plan. But once it is gone, it will become the most expensive one. | Dish TV Shifts Production of Set-Top Boxes to India Following Tata Sky Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:32 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/dish-tv-product-stbs-india/297063/, Dish TV Shifts Production of Set-Top Boxes to India Following Tata Sky
A few days back we reported that Tata Sky has shifted the production of Set-Top Boxes to India supporting the government's vision of 'Make in India'. Following the footsteps of Tata Sky, Dish TV, one of the biggest DTH operators of the country has done the same. So now, Set-Top Boxes of Dish TV will be completely manufactured in India as well. But there is a difference between Tata Sky and Dish TV. Dish TV has completely shifted the production to India whereas Tata Sky has done so partly. More on the story ahead. Dish TV Becomes India's First DTH Operator to Build STBs LocallyEven though it was Tata Sky which first announced the shifting of production from a foreign country to India, the record of first DTH operator to build STBs locally has been bagged by Dish TV. The DTH operator is completely going to manufacture its Set-Top Boxes in India. Tata Sky has made plans with its partner Technicolor for shifting the production to India. The DTH operator plans to execute its plans for manufacturing STBs in India by early 2021. But Dish TV has taken a lead here as well. While Tata Sky still has some time before it starts manufacturing in India, Dish TV has already manufactured over 1,000 Set-Top Boxes in India. The models which are manufactured in India are numbered DCH-2090S and the STBs are named DishNXT. These STBs have a matte finish and they come in black colour. It is good to see Indian DTH operators falling in line with the government's vision of 'Make in India' and helping India to achieve its 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' status. One of the most important things that this will do is it will contribute to the economy of India by creating more jobs and keeping the money in India only. Another result of locally manufactured STBs might be lower cost. Locally manufacturing the STBs might be cheaper since there would be no transportation cost and customs tax for the company. But it can also result in the STBs becoming more expensive. Only time will tell what kind of change it will be or whether there will be any change at all.
