A few days back, the Indian government declared the app to be unsafe for the privacy of Indians and along with some other apps, banned it in the country. So users and players can't download the game from Play Store anymore. While this was bad news for the PUBG Corporation and Tencent, it became good news for the other similar games and their companies. With the ban in place for PUBG Mobile in India, people started to look for alternative games from the Play Store and App Store. That resulted in higher downloads of the alternative games. More on the story ahead. PUBG Mobile Ban a Good News for Alternative AppsAccording to a report from ET Telecom, rivals of PUBG Mobile — Call of Duty Mobile, Battlelands Royale, and Garena Free Fire all saw higher download rates after the ban of PUBG Mobile. As per statistics, Call of Duty Mobile started getting 9x more downloads than usual. Call of Duty Mobile on an average got 7,500 downloads in a day before PUBG Mobile was banned, but after the ban, the numbers rose to staggering 67,000 downloads every day in the September 3-7 period. The game got 3,30,000 new downloads in that five day period. Along with that, Call of Duty Mobile saw an increase in the daily active users (DAUs) by 50% reaching a high of 4,80,000 active users on a daily against the 2,00,000 active users before the ban. Talking about other games such as Garena Free Fire and Battlelands Royale, these games got 2x more downloads after the ban of PUBG Mobile. Free Fire got around 80,000 downloads a day on an average before PUBG Mobile was banned. But after the ban, the numbers rose to 1,60,000 downloads daily. This stat is for the same period (September 3-7). Free Fire got a total of around 8,00,000 downloads in the five day period and the DAUs rose by 5% (45,50,000 active users). On the other hand, Battlelands Royale witnessed a 41% rise in its DAUs from India. PUBG Mobile has broken its ties with the Tencent and is looking to work with the Indian government to bring back the game to India in an official capacity as soon as possible. | Trai Recommendations on OTT Services Does Not Address Important Issues: COAI Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:20 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/trai-ott-services-recommendations-coai/297429/, Trai Recommendations on OTT Services Does Not Address Important Issues: COAI
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) on Monday said that the recommendations released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Regulatory Framework for Over-the-Top (OTT) services does not address important issues. SP Kochhar, director general of COAI said that the consultation paper released by Trai in 2018, had raised several "important issues" such as "lawful interception of OTT services." However, Kochhar said that the recommendations released by Trai on Monday does not address the key issues. Trai on Monday said that the regulatory interventions are not required "in respect of issues related with privacy and security" of OTT services. OTT Services Are Substitutable to Telecom Services: COAIThe authority in its recommendations said that the developments related to OTT services "shall be monitored" and that the "intervention as felt necessary" shall be done at applicable time. Kochhar said that the consultation paper also posed issues like "Similarity and Substitutability" of telecom service providers (TSPs) and OTT communication services along with "regulatory imbalance and non-level playing field” between TSPs and OTT apps. "However, it appears none of these issues have been addressed by TRAI in their current recommendations," Kochhar said. "We were actually hopeful that Trai would address and rectify these long pending market anomalies once for all." The COAI, the industry body representing operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio also highlighted that the "TSPs will continue to be at a disadvantageous position" without a resolution of the issues. "While TSPs have to abide by a strict regulatory and licensing framework in order to provide the communication services, no regulatory/licensing framework is applicable on those OTT players who offer similar communication services in the form of messaging, voice and video calls," Kochhar said. Crucially, Kochhar highlighted that the COAI is of the view that the "OTT services are substitutable to the services provided by the TSPs and hence a case of non-level playing field exists." OTT Apps Pose Threat to National SecurityKochhar said that the TSPs comply with the regulations on security issues like lawful interception but that these are "not applicable" on OTT service providers "which remains a threat to the national security." "The same is true in case of the privacy and security norms which are applicable on telcos but not applicable on OTT CSPs who also offer messaging and voice/video communication services," Kochhar said. The authority on Monday said that it observed that the "architecture of OTT communication services is evolving to protect the end users." Further, Trai said that the "imposition of any requirements" would result in change in the architecture of OTT services "which might not provide same level of protection as offered today." The authority said that "it is not an opportune moment to recommend a comprehensive regulatory framework" for OTT services. However, it added that the issue "may be looked into afresh when more clarity emerges in the international jurisdictions." YouTube today introduced a new feature called ‘YouTube Shorts,’ and as the name itself suggests, it is a direct rival to TikTok in India. YouTube Shorts is a new video experience that lets a user create short videos right from the YouTube mobile app. With TikTok already banned in the country, YouTube Shorts might gain some momentum and give a tough competition to Instagram Reels. According to YouTube, Shorts is a new short-form video experience for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using nothing but their mobile phones. The feature has been made available today for Android and iOS users YouTube Shorts: What Exactly Is It?YouTube is rolling out an early beta of Shorts in India. The India-first feature includes a new camera and a few editing tools. YouTube promises to add more features over the coming months. Furthermore, YouTube is also rolling out an updated app for Android users. As mentioned above, YouTube Shorts is a new way to express yourself in 15 seconds or less. Do make a note that users can only create vertical videos on the YouTube app. The feature is already being rolled out to the users in India on both Android and iOS platforms. If you have received the new YouTube Shorts feature, here’s how to create your first Short. Hit the “+” icon (or the video camera icon on iOS) and select 'Video'. If you see 'Create a short video' then you have access to the Shorts camera, which will allow you to use editing tools to do things like string multiple video clips together, use speed controls and timers, and add music to your video clips. If there’s no ‘Create your first Short’ option, then you will have to wait for the update to reach your device. For users on Android and located in India, the company is rolling out an updated mobile app. The ‘Create’ icon has now moved to the middle of the bottom navigation bar to make it easier for the users to create Short videos right from the YouTube app. In its blog post, YouTube stated that the users who don’t have access to the Shorts feature yet can still post their existing vertical videos that are less than 60 seconds using the hashtag #Shorts in the title or description. The YouTube Short videos will appear on the home screen of YouTube. The company says it is testing a section on the YouTube homepage to highlight videos from the Shorts camera.
