Expanding the Galaxy S20 lineup, South Korean smartphone brand, Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) with flagship specs on board. Similar to the Galaxy S20 series in the western markets, the Galaxy S20 FE is also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset and the pricing starts at $699. For the asking price, Samsung is also offering 5G support which we did not expect at all. At that price, the S20 FE takes on the OnePlus 8 and the pressure will be on Chinese brand to price the OnePlus 8T affordably. It seems like the price of the Snapdragon 865 SoC has come down and it could be the reason behind Samsung offering the S20 FE at a lower price. The smartphone could also make its way to the Indian market, but it will be interesting to see which chipset Samsung uses.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: Specifications and Features

The Galaxy S20 FE or Fan Edition is a smartphone aimed at the fans and it will offer features asked by the company’s loyal fans. The phone sports a 6.5-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and a centred punch-hole. To achieve the lighter price tag, Samsung has gone with a plastic body, but the phone has support for wireless charging and IP68 certification too.

The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It seems like the phone comes in a single variant. Users can expand the storage up to 1TB with a microSD card. The handset is backed by a 4500mAh battery and there’s an optical in-display fingerprint scanner.

Samsung has added a triple camera setup on the rear side of the Galaxy S20 FE. There’s a primary 12MP wide-angle shooter with f/1.8 aperture, secondary 8MP telephoto lens and the third sensor is again a 12MP unit with ultra-wide-angle capabilities. The phone also has a 32MP selfie shooter on the front.

Lastly, the phone measures 8.4mm thick and weighs 190 grams. It comes in a slew of colours- Cloud Red, Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavendar, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy and Cloud White. And yes, the Galaxy S20 FE has 5G support.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: Pricing and Availability

Samsung has launched the device in only one variant- 6GB+128GB and it costs $699 (approx. Rs 51,500). The handset will be available for purchase starting October 12 in the US and the preorders will begin tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how Samsung prices the device in India.

Reliance Jio Might Release $50 Smartphone to Rival Chinese Brands

In the Reliance Industries Ltd AGM 2020, the company announced that its subsidiary Jio is partnering up with Google to manufacture some of the cheapest 4G smartphones in the market with Android powering them. The cost of the smartphones announced was as low as Rs 4,000 ($54). This is going to give jitters to low-cost smartphone brands such as Xiaomi and Realme and more. As per a new Bloomberg report, RIL has asked the local manufacturers to upgrade the production capacity to facilitate in the making of up to 200 million smartphones in the coming two years. More on the story ahead.

Reliance Targets to Sell 200 Million $50 Smartphones in Next Two Years

When Mukesh Ambani came out with Jio, it revolutionised the Indian telecom space in a matter of months. So there is a possibility that these new cheap smartphones in the price segment of $50 might change the smartphone industry in a drastic manner as well. Such aggressive pricing will have a major impact on the sales of popular and hit Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Realme.

Another thing which will be working for Jio and against these Chinese brands is that all the smartphones that Jio will manufacture will be made in India. It will further motivate the Indian customers to get smartphones of Jio and save some money.

Of course, this is not the first time Mukesh Ambani is going to sell Android smartphones in the market. A few years back, Jio announced its own subsidiary LYF which manufactured low-cost smartphones. But that didn't work out since the smartphones were not that good. Even though they were priced cheap, they didn't perform the way other smartphones in the near price segment were doing.

Mukesh Ambani had expressed his wish of seeing India become '2G Mukt' and thus if these $50 smartphones are a hit, then people will be able to access 4G network at a very low cost. They will be able to do basic things such as sending texts on WhatsApp, watching videos on YouTube pretty comfortably with this smartphone. It will be interesting to see when will Jio announce its new smartphone in the market and what kind of response it will get.

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/android-11-tv-performance-features/299659/, Android 11 for Android TV Focuses on Performance, Privacy Improvements

Google on Tuesday announced the launch of Android 11 update for Android TV focusing on enhancements to privacy and performance. The company said that the Android 11 on Android TV would introduce "new features" that are customized to the large screen. Wolfram Klein, Android TV product manager, said in a blog post that the Android 11 on Android TV would carry over the enhancements found on the mobile-centric Android 11 release. Klein said that the privacy and performance improvements such as enhanced memory management are "introduced to make sure TV devices work quickly and securely."

Android 11 Update for Android TV Customised for Large Screen

The Android 11 update for the large screen introduces support for auto low latency mode and low latency media decoding intended to aid gamers. The auto low latency mode is said to make gaming on TV "even smoother" with the Android TV disabling post processing to minimise latency whenever a gaming application is shown full screen.

Further, the update also said to introduce new Tuner Framework with updated Media CAS support for delivering audio and video content. Klein also said that the Android 11 update for TVs introduces extensions to the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) implementation of HDMI-CEC.

Crucially, it was also said that the update also delivers extended gamepad support, silent boot mode for system updates, inactivity prompts along with OEM configurable wake keys.

Android 11 on Android TV to Soon Land on User TVs

The Android 11 update also said to introduce instant apps through the Play store that enables users to try apps without installing it. The company also said that the typing on the TV has been "made easier" with the Gboard for TV that packs in "new layouts and features" such as speech-to-text and predictive typing.

"Android TV OEM partners will be launching and upgrading devices to Android 11 over the coming months," Klein said in the blog post.

In early August, Google highlighted that there are 80% more Android TVs currently active as compared to the previous year. The company also said that Android TV is available on seven of the top 10 Smart TV OEMs. Crucially, the Android TV ecosystem now said to host over 7000 apps.

Vodafone Idea Set to Face More Pressure Over New Reliance Jio Postpaid Tariffs

vodafone-idea-vi-rs351-new-plan-100gb

Vodafone Idea, the third largest telecom operator currently "facing a cash gap" is set to witness more pressure following the new postpaid tariffs unveiled by Reliance Jio, ICICI Securities said in a report. According to the report released by ICICI Securities on Wednesday, the cash gap witnessed by Vodafone Idea is due to the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) verdict. The third largest telecom operator in India is required to pay its AGR dues and the spectrum dues annuity from the end of 2022 financial year.

Vodafone Idea Requires Over 90% Tariff Hike to Bridge Cash Gap

ICICI Securities highlighted that Vodafone Idea is required to make a tariff hike of over 90% from its current levels to bridge the annual cash gap.

"The current need to protect postpaid subscribers could, therefore, pressurise its cash flows further," ICICI Securities said in its report.

Reliance Jio, the largest telecom operator in India on Tuesday introduced its JioPostpaid Plus plans in multiple tiers in the range of Rs 399 to Rs 1499. While Vodafone Idea does offer a base plan at identical price point to JioPostpaid Plus plan, the largest telecom operator offers more data on its base plan. Further, the JioPostpaid Plus plans also offer an array of benefits including a complimentary access to Netflix Mobile subscription, Amazon Prime membership and Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription.

ICICI Securities highlighted that Vodafone Idea had a postpaid subscriber base of 2.15 crores, representing 7.8% of its total base at the end of its first quarter in the current fiscal year. The firm said that Airtel in the same time period had a postpaid subscriber base of 1.46 crores representing 5.2% of its total subscriber base.

"Also, with [a] higher proportion of postpaid base, it is more vulnerable to churn," ICICI Securities said in its report. "Therefore, this move does create additional pressure on VIL survival."

Incumbents Required to Spend Around Rs 2000 Crores to Match New Jio Postpaid Tariffs

Crucially, ICICI Securities said that the incumbents including Vodafone Idea and Airtel could lose out to Reliance Jio unless they match the offers provided by Reliance Jio.

"We see the offering having potential to drive at least some churn from incumbents, unless they match the OTT offers," ICICI Securities said in its report. "Matching of the offering, on the other hand, could result in additional annual costs to Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL)."

The firm said that Vodafone Idea and Airtel will have to additionally shell out Rs 1800 to Rs 2500 crores to match the postpaid benefits offered by Reliance Jio.

"There is the higher element of corporate connections and already existing connections, which might be at lower tariff," the firm said in its report. "Thus, the actual financial burden/impact of this move is difficult to ascertain."

ICICI Securities said that Reliance Jio's move on Tuesday "creates a new layer of tariff based competition in the segment that was so far, unchallenged and lucrative."

"While both Airtel, VIL, are exposed to this risk of churn, the pressure on VIL will be more," the firm said in its report. "The theme of prepaid tariff hike in near term also remains questionable."

Meanwhile, CLSA, a capital market and investment group in a research note also highlighted that incumbents can "match offers" provided by Reliance Jio on its new postpaid plans. CLSA said that the incumbents can match the offers provided by Reliance Jio as the OTT benefits offered on the JioPostpaid Plus plans are largely restricted to single screen.

The firm said that a 10% loss of postpaid subscribers will result in Airtel taking an 1% to 2% hit to its consolidated revenues. Similarly, CLSA said that Vodafone Idea will face an 2% to 4% hit on its revenues if it loses 10% of its postpaid subscriber base.

It also has to be noted that the JioPostpaid Plus plans also offers "WiFi calling in India and abroad" along with "in-flight connectivity for Indian travellers travelling abroad." Further, the top-tier JioPostpaid Plus plan priced at Rs 1499 also provides "unlimited data and voice" in the USA and UAE.

Reliance Jio yesterday announced its new postpaid plans which start from Rs 399. It is a good move by the telco since until now it only offered one postpaid plan to the customers. Jio has branded these postpaid plans under 'JioPostpaid Plus'. There are five plans on offer from Reliance Jio under the postpaid category. So now not only in prepaid plans category, but Jio will also compete with others on the postpaid front. Both Vi and Airtel offer postpaid plans as well. It will be interesting to see how Jio's plans fare against the plans on offer from both the telcos. Let's do a detailed comparison of how postpaid plans from Jio, Airtel, and Vi differ from each other.

Reliance Jio vs Bharti Airtel vs Vi Postpaid Plans: Benefits

All the postpaid plans from Jio come with OTT benefits such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Prime Video, JioTV and JioCinema and more. But it is the same with other telcos as well. Both Airtel and Vi offer customers OTT benefits with their postpaid plans as well. But Jio is the only one in the category to provide customers with the OTT benefit of Disney+ Hotstar. Do make a note that the Netflix subscription offered by Reliance Jio is ‘Netflix Mobile’ plan priced at Rs 199.

Coming to the data rollover facility, all the telcos have provided their customers with this benefit. Along with that, if the customers want to go for a family postpaid plan, they can go with either of the telcos. Jio provides the family plan on its Rs 599, Rs 799, Rs 999, and Rs 1,499 plans. As for Airtel, it provides the family plan on its Rs 749, Rs 999, and Rs 1,599 plans. Vodafone also offers three family plans starting at Rs 598 plan and followed by Rs 749 and Rs 999 plans.

The customers get unlimited voice calling with either of the telcos and with any of the plans they choose from along with unlimited SMS as well.

Reliance Jio vs Bharti Airtel vs Vi Postpaid Plans: Price

So there are postpaid plans which fall in the same price category of pricing by all the three telcos. Let's compare the plans which come for the same price between two or three of the telcos. Jio and Vi both offer postpaid plans of Rs 399 and Jio offers more data with the plan than Vi.

Then Bharti Airtel and Vi both offer postpaid plans for Rs 499 and they offer almost the same benefits except for minor differences. Jio offers a Rs 599 plan and Vi offers a Rs 598 plan. Both the plans also provide family connection options but Jio again offers more data.

Again, both Airtel and Vi offer a Rs 749 postpaid plan with family connection options. The benefits are again almost similar. Then there is a plan which all of these telcos offer. It is the Rs 999 plan. Jio offers more data than any other telco including the rollover data. As for OTT benefits, Jio again falls ahead of both Airtel and Vi. All these three telcos offer family connections with this plan as well.

Postpaid Segment Emerges as New Battleground for Indian Telecom Operators

ICICI Securities in a report on Wednesday said that the new postpaid tariffs unveiled by Reliance Jio on Tuesday will have "multiple ramifications" for Reliance Jio as well incumbents. According to the firm, the plans unveiled by Reliance Jio, while offered at similar level of tariff as incumbents, largely have the benefits of three major over-the-top (OTT) platforms. Reliance Jio, the largest telecom operator in India on Tuesday unveiled JioPostpaid Plus plans in multiple tiers in the range of Rs 399 to Rs 1499. The JioPostpaid Plus plans offer an array of benefits including a complimentary access to Netflix Mobile subscription, Amazon Prime membership and Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription.

Postpaid Services Emerge as New Battleground for Telecom Operators

Further, the base JioPostpaid Plus tariff priced at Rs 399 is 20% cheaper than the base tariff offered by Airtel with identical data benefits.

"We see the offering having potential to drive at least some churn from incumbents, unless they match the OTT offers," ICICI Securities said in its report on Wednesday. "Matching of the offering, on the other hand, could result in additional annual costs to Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL)."

The firm said that a "large chunk" of connections in the postpaid segment "is driven by corporate connections" across the country.

"Thus, response of non-corporate segment will be key to churn," ICICI Securities said in its report.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in a report highlighted that the prepaid services accounted for 95.35% of the total connections for the quarter ended March 31, 2020. The report released by Trai in mid-September also highlights that the average revenue per user (ARPU) in the prepaid segment hit Rs 84 during the quarter ended March, 2020. However, Trai said that the postpaid segment registered an ARPU of Rs 244 for the quarter ended March, 2020.

Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel Could Match Offers Provided by Reliance Jio

CLSA, a capital market and investment group in a research note highlighted that the postpaid subscribers are "key to operators' ARPU." The firm said that the ARPU growth in the segment "presents opportunities" for Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.

Crucially, CLSA said that the incumbents can match the offers provided by Reliance Jio as the OTT benefits offered by the largest telecom operator in India are largely restricted to single screen.

ICICI Securities also highlighted that Vodafone Idea and Airtel already offer Amazon prime one year subscription with the postpaid connections. However, the firm said that the Airtel and Vodafone Idea will have to make "incremental spending" for Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription.
