vi-subscribers-complain-network-outage-in-maharashtra

Several subscribers of Vodafone Idea (Vi) took to Twitter to report the connectivity issues they experience in Maharashtra since Thursday morning. The company said that one of its key sites in Pune is under a flood attack due to heavy overnight shower resulting in the disruption of the network. Vodafone Idea confirmed that it is working on a resolution and will restore the service at the earliest.

Vodafone Idea Network outage: Impact across the state

"Heavy rain in Pune has resulted in the flooding of some areas, including one of our key sites in the city. This has caused partial disruption in services for some customers. Our technical team is working dedicatedly to fully restore the services soon. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers," announced a social media post from Vi.

Vodafone Idea's site that got affected manages people from across the telecom circle and not just a circle of subscribers in a certain area. This has resulted in a broader circumferential failure of the network across the entire state.

According to Website Down Detector, network failures are shown for other internet service providers as well. However, significant outages are not reported yet.

Most parts of Western Maharashtra have been experiencing a heavy downpour since Wednesday. Waterlogging is reported at several places. Pune registered 19.8mm of rain in a span of three hours on Wednesday night. The city continues to remain cloudy. According to the India meteorological department, the rainfall is likely to continue in the upcoming days. The subscribers can expect more network connectivity issues if the situation prevails.

Update from VI: "Heavy rain in Pune resulted in flooding of some areas including one of our key sites in the city. This caused partial disruption in services for some customers, earlier today. Our technical team has worked non-stop, deployed interim solutions and restored Voice & Data services. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our customers."

warnermedia-plug-hbo-hd-movie-channels-india

The American multinational mass media conglomerate WarnerMedia announced that it would discontinue HBO SD and HD linear movie channels in India from December 15, 2020. Besides India, the channels will be suspended in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives as well. The decision to discontinue is a result of its struggles to find a sustainable business model in the South Asian region. The subscriber base of the channels is tiny in these regions.

Focus Shifts Towards Cartoon Network and Pogo channels

The Warner Media Group intends to shift its focus on the kids' segment, implying that the channels such as Cartoon Network and Pogo channels will be promoted in the countries. The Group also targets to increase the local animation production.

Siddharth Jain, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Warner Media South Asia, expressed his grief in an official statement seen by ET Brand Equity Report. "After 20 years of successes for the HBO linear movie channel in South Asia and more than a decade with the WB linear movie channel, this was a difficult decision to make," the report quoted.

There are plenty of changes in the pay-tv industry landscape across India. The market dynamics further took a turn in the current COVID-19 pandemic, which also has accelerated the Group's decision.

Jain thanked the HBO and WB fans besides his employees behind the brand. He promised that the company plans to keep India as a key market and is committed to assessing optimal opportunities in the country.

The Group's offices in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru will continue to work on kids' brand channels after the cessation. Operations, sales and marketing, including the distribution, will be managed by these offices.

Vi (Vodafone Idea) Eager to Embrace 5G, Says ‘Keenly Interested’ in Trials

vi-vodafone-idea-embrace-5g-trials

Vodafone Idea is the next player after Reliance Jio striving to enter the 5G market in India. In a virtual media briefing, telecom service provider's Chief Technology Officer Vishant Vora specified that the telco is 'keenly interested' in conducting the 5G trials. He said that Vi would support the government decisions on the subject. However, the 5G spectrum auction is going to take place in 2021. Vi along with Jio and other telcos which want to jump on the 5G train as fast as possible will have to wait a little more. More on the story ahead.

5G Trials: India should develop Own Cases

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) demanded a fresh set of 'priority vendors' for 5G trials two weeks ago. In response to DoT's announcement, Reliance Jio Infocomm had named three vendors – Samsung, Nokia and Ericsson – along with its own technology for the trials. ET Telecom reported that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea has opted for Nokia and Ericsson for 5G trials. There were also speculations that Vodafone Idea will conduct trials with a US-based company Mavenir.

However, Vora denied specifying the vendor it chose. "I can't comment on speculations on media… We continue to stay engaged with the government, and we will support the government's decision," he said.

He emphasised that India should develop its own set of cases for 5G. According to Vora, such case studies will deliver exceptional value to India's economy and society, instead of blindly following the rest of the world. 5G is already recognised as the 'foundational piece' of the economy of the future.

He appreciated Japan's and China's take on the subject. "They said we're not going to charge you for spectrum, but we will actually like you to build a 5G network on which all of these other industries can grow," he quoted the countries' response. Vora added that Vodafone Idea will wait for the government’s decision in 5G spectrum auction and that Japan's and China's take is worth considering while India deliberates on the subject.

In the media interaction, Vora announced that Vodafone Idea is teaming up with IBM for the Big Data platform.

Besides Vora, Vodafone Idea MD and CEO Ravinder Takkar had announced that telco's network is 'very-much' 5G-ready during a recent AGM meeting.

India is much-delayed in 5G trials and is yet to take decisions on matters like including Huawei and ZTE amid the border tensions with China.

BSNL and MTNL Services Made Mandatory for Public Departments of India

bsnl-mtnl-services-mandatory-public-departments
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is going to be providing services in all the public departments of India now onwards. The central government has made it mandatory for all the public sector units and departments to use the services of BSNL and MTNL. This move by the central government will bring much-needed relief for the cash-strapped telcos. So now, the public departments can't use services of other telecom companies within India except BSNL and MTNL, a report from Mint said. More on the story ahead.

No Other Telecom Companies Except BSNL and MTNL for Public Departments

As per a memorandum issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), “The government of India has, inter-alia, approved the mandatory utilisation of capacities of BSNL and MTNL by all ministries/departments of the government of India, CPSEs, central autonomous bodies".

There was a note from the Department of Expenditure accompanying the memorandum which stated that the decision of mandatorily using the services of BSNL and MTNL came from the cabinet. Every public department from now onwards will use the services of BSNL and MTNL only. Be it for landline, broadband/internet, or leased line services, the services must come from BSNL or MTNL only.

This decision would certainly benefit both BSNL and MTNL. BSNL registered a loss of Rs 15,500 crore, and MTNL registered a loss of Rs 3,694 crore in the FY 2019-20. The rising competition in the broadband industry of India has also put BSNL in a tough spot. BSNL had a broadband customer base of 2.9 crores in November 2008, and it came down to 80 lakh in July this year. As for MTNL, its fixed-line customer base of 35.4 lakh in November 2008 came down to 30.7 lakh in July this year.

Meanwhile, BSNL raised Rs 8,500 crore through sovereign guarantee bonds last month so that it could manage its operational expenses and expand its network services in the country. PK Purwar, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, has said that the telco is planning to raise another Rs 18,000 crore by monetising the assets within a year.

Mesh Router Vs Wi-Fi Range Extender: What Should You Choose?

mesh-router-wifi-range-extender-you-choose

Wi-Fi has become the source of livelihood and income for many since the time global pandemic came. A lot of people, be it students, office workers, or business owners are working from their homes. For working and studying from home, a fast and reliable internet connection is required. For some, even after getting a faster broadband connection with a better router for range and connectivity, Wi-Fi still drops at some points of their home. If one of those points is where you like to sit and study or work, then there are two tools which can increase the connectivity of Wi-Fi in your home. You can either use a Mesh Router or a Wi-Fi range extender. Let's detail which one is the best for you.

Wi-Fi Range Extender, What is It?

The Wi-Fi range extender is something which you can use when you just need a small part of your house to be connected to the Wi-Fi. Usually, there are dead spots in a home, such as a room or a hall where the connectivity of the Wi-Fi drops. For extending the Wi-Fi connectivity to those spots, a Wi-Fi range extender can be used.

The Wi-Fi range extender can be connected to your router, and its network name will be the same as your original network but with an added extension of '_EXT' at the end. Wi-fi range extenders create different networks using the original network wherever they are placed in your home. So in case you go to a different part of your house where the extender is set-up, then you will have to juggle between different networks.

So if the connectivity drops in one or two of your rooms, you can use a Wi-Fi range extender to increase the range of Wi-Fi connectivity. Also, Wi-Fi range extenders are cheaper than mesh routers.

Wi-Fi Mesh Router, What is it?

A Wi-Fi mesh router is a device which can be used if you want to extend the coverage of your Wi-Fi to your whole home. If there is an entire floor of the house which doesn't connect to the Wi-Fi because the router is kept on another floor, then the mesh router is one of the best tools to solve this problem.

A mesh router will allow you to connect you to a single network. With a Wi-Fi range extender, you will have to juggle between different networks when you go from one point of your home to another. But with the mesh router, only one network in your home will be spread entirely. Mesh routers are smart, and they use algorithms to determine the best way to route the internet signals to you depending on the part of the home you are in.

However, one thing that you should note is, they are reasonably more expensive than the Wi-Fi range extenders. So if you can afford it and need the internet connection on a whole different part of your house, mesh router is what you should get. But if there is only a small space where the internet doesn't reach your home, then Wi-Fi range extender might be a better option.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Is iPhone 11 Still Worth Buying?

Posted: 14 Oct 2020 06:30 PM PDT

is-iphone-11-still-worth-buying

Apple launched the iPhone 12 series through a virtual event on Tuesday. The company launched a total of four new devices in the iPhone 12 series namely iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. While a lot of users are super excited about the new iPhone 12, there are many who are wondering whether the iPhone 11 is still a good buy at this point. So here is a detailed comparison between the all-new iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Display

When talking about the quality of display on either of these smartphones, there is one noticeable point. The iPhone 11 comes with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina XDR display and the iPhone 12 comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display.

The iPhone 12 has support for HDR display whereas iPhone 11 misses out on this particular feature. Further, the iPhone 12 comes with a 2532×1170-pixel resolution at 460ppi whereas the iPhone 11 comes with a lesser 1792×828-pixel resolution at 326ppi. Coming to the contrast ratio on both these smartphones, the iPhone 11 comes with 1,400:1 (typical) compared to the iPhone 12's 20,00,000:1 contrast ratio.

Both the smartphones get the True Tone Display and Haptic Touch. Typical max brightness on both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 is 625 nits. However, the difference arises in the kind of protective layer that these smartphones come with. The iPhone 12 features Ceramic Shield on top of the screen which improves the drop-performance of the smartphone by 4 times while the iPhone 11 misses out on Ceramic Shield.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Camera

The iPhones are known for their excellent integration between its camera software and its hardware. The iPhone 11 camera was nothing short of impressive for any person who used the device. Both the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12 come with the same rear camera design with the devices featuring a dual-camera setup in the rear. There are actually many similarities between the cameras of the two devices. The iPhone 11 and its successor pack in similar two camera sensors – 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP wide-angle sensors.

Both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 can support Night Mode. However, the iPhone 12 front camera also has the support for Night Mode while the iPhone 11 misses out on the feature. The iPhone 11 has what Apple calls 'Next-generation Smart HDR for Photos' whereas the iPhone 12 has 'Smart HDR 3 for Photos'. How much difference there is between the two is unclear at this point, but it can be assumed that the 'Smart HDR 3 for Photos' is better.

The rear cameras of both the devices allow users to record in 4K at 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps. Further, the rear cameras on iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 support 1080p HD recording at 30fps or 60fps. However, the iPhone 12 also supports Dolby Vision HDR recording at 30fps which the iPhone 11 misses out on. Along with this, the iPhone 12 gets Night Mode support for Time Lapse videos.

The front camera on both the devices sport a 12MP sensor and it also allows 4K recording at 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps. The iPhone 12, however, comes with Dolby Vision HDR recording support at 30fps for the front camera. The users also receive additional features such as Night Mode and Deep Fusion support with the front camera of iPhone 12 which is not available in the iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: Chipset and Battery

The iPhones are powered by Apple's in-house Silicon chipsets. The iPhone 11 ships with A13 Bionic whereas the iPhone 12 ships with A14 Bionic. Apple referred to the A13 Bionic as the 'Third-generation Neural Engine' chipset and A14 Bionic as 'Next-generation Neural Engine.' While the iPhone 11's A13 Bionic is very powerful, the A14 Bionic is said to even surpass its predecessor. The A14 Bionic can also support 5G connectivity whereas A13 Bionic is only limited to the 4G networks.

Coming to the battery of the smartphones, both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 come with built-in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Both the devices can support wireless charging, however, the iPhone 12 gets the support for MagSafe charging. It is a new kind of wireless charging which is only limited to the iPhone 12 series for now. There is a USB port which can support wired charging as well on both the devices.

Apple has claimed that both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 can deliver a video playback of up to 17 hours and 10 hours for streaming content. The audio playback up to 65 hours is the same for both the devices.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone 12: Verdict?

There is a lot that a user needs to consider when buying a new smartphone. It would be very hard to decide between iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. This is particularly because even though the iPhone 12 comes with a more powerful chipset and some additional features, it doesn't render iPhone 11 any less of value.

Both iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are available in identical storage variants including 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Further, the two devices also carry an IP68 rating, meaning both are water-resistant up to 2 meters for 30 minutes. The battery capacity on the two devices is said to be similar as well and both the devices support Face ID.

However, iPhone 12 seems like a better option on paper when a user has to consider the device as a long term investment. This is because the world is shifting to 5G networks. Even though it would take a while for the 5G networks to be live in India, the investment on iPhone 12 would come in handy if one is considering the device for long term use.

The iPhone 12 would be available in 5 fresh colours whereas the iPhone 11 comes in 6 colours. The prices of both smartphones differ quite a bit on their base variants. The base variant of iPhone 11 is now priced at Rs 54,900 while the base variant of iPhone 12 is priced at Rs 79,900. So there is a difference of Rs 25,000 between the two devices.

To the users thinking about which one is better, in terms of functionality, the iPhone 12 is much better and is future proof. But iPhone 11 is not a bad device either. Even after the launch of iPhone 12, the iPhone 11 can still compete with most other smartphones in the market and could emerge as a winner. The A13 Bionic continues to be one of the most powerful chipsets in the world.
