Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken out multiple illegal mobile signal repeaters across Delhi. This was possible due to the help of relevant authorities and mobile operators present in the city. Different locations of the city such as South Extension, East of Kailash, and Sant Nagar had both commercial and residential buildings operating active illegal mobile signal repeaters. After the search and scanning of the authorities came to rest, a total of 20 such illegal equipment were seized. Along with that, 10 notices were issued to remove the identified ones with immediate effect. More on the story ahead. DoT Removes Illegal Signal Repeaters From DelhiDepartment of Telecommunications (DoT) has put to rest a number of mobile signal repeaters which were being operated illegally in Delhi. As per the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1993, and Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, installing an illegal signal repeater is a punishable offence. For those who are found guilty of the crime can be imposed with heavy fines. There is a good reason why the signal repeaters are illegal. Because of these repeaters, users in different areas have to face issues such as call drops and low data speeds. People install these devices so that they can get a boost in their network speed and quality. But at the same time, these devices interfere with the mobile networks present in the area near them. It degrades the network experience for the users completely in the area. Telecom operators are investing heavily to improve the network experience for the users however illegal devices such as mobile signal repeaters are reducing the impact of those investments. DoT Pushes for More 5G SpectrumAs per a PTI report, DoT has requested the defence ministry of India and the Department of Space (DoS) to vacate the 100 MHz of spectrum in the frequency band of 3300-3400 MHz. This push by DoT is to ensure that 5G services can be rolled out by the operators in the way it should be. The issues between Dot, DoS, and the defence ministry has led to a delay in auction for 5G spectrum. Now the spectrum auction is expected to take place in 2021. | Government Considering All Options on Vodafone Arbitration Appeal Posted: 16 Oct 2020 06:21 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/government-considering-all-options-vodafone-arbitration-appeal/304887/, Government Considering All Options on Vodafone Arbitration Appeal
The government of India on Thursday said that "all options" on the Vodafone arbitration case are currently "under examination" and that a final decision has not been made on the issue. The clarification was issued by the finance ministry on Thursday after certain media houses reported that the Attorney General (AG) was in favor of not appealing in the Vodafone arbitration case. Vodafone Group in late September won an arbitration case against India's tax demand rising from a retrospective change in the country's tax law. Government Considering All Options on Vodafone Arbitration CaseThe Permanent Court of Arbitration in late September directed the Indian government to cease the tax demand, interest and penalty against the Vodafone Group. Further, the court directed the government of India to reimburse 60% of Vodafone's legal cost and 50% of the fees paid by Vodafone to the appointing authority. It was reported that the government will have to shell out over Rs 80 crores, if it chooses not to appeal the decision. In recent days, news reports emerged that AG had "informally" told the government that it "should avoid filing an appeal" against the arbitration award. The finance ministry on Thursday said that the news reports were "speculative" and that it was "totally incorrect and without any factual basis." "Award along with all options are under examination within the Ministry and further course of action will be decided based on such examination," the ministry said in its clarification. Vodafone Idea Stock Up on Government ClarificationFollowing the development, Vodafone Idea stock on Friday was up nearly 4% in the early hours of the trading session on the Bombay Stock Exchange. However, the stock closed the trading session at Rs 8.03, up 0.50% as compared to its closing price on Thursday. The Indian government on its part is also dealing with a separate arbitration case involving British oil explorer Cairn Energy. It was said that if a separate arbitration panel were to hold the government's demand as illegal, then the Indian government will have to shell out around Rs 11,000 crores to Cairn Energy. | DoT Pushes for More 5G Spectrum, Asks DoS and Defence Ministry to Vacate Airwaves Posted: 15 Oct 2020 11:01 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/dot-pushes-more-5g-spectrum/304816/, DoT Pushes for More 5G Spectrum, Asks DoS and Defence Ministry to Vacate Airwaves
DoT Asks Defence Ministry to Desert 100 MHz of Spectrum in 3300-3400 MHz Frequency BandAs per a PTI report, DoT has asked the defence ministry to vacate the 100 MHz of spectrum in the frequency band of 3300-3400 MHz and opt to use frequency band of 3000-3100 MHz. At the same time, DoT has asked DoS to vacate the frequency band of 3600-3700 MHz. This request by DoT is to ensure that the telecom operators of India can roll out 5G services in the way it should be. "The DoT is now looking for 400 MHz of contiguous spectrum in the medium band which can be efficiently utilised by telecom operators to meet standard broadband speed for 5G services," a government official related to the matter told PTI. As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), per megahertz of spectrum in the 3600-3700 MHz band should be priced at Rs 492 crore. Trai has further suggested that the spectrum bands should be put into the block size of 20 MHz for the auction. So based on this, the telcos will have to spend at least Rs 9,840 crores pan-India basis to purchase spectrum in the 3300-3600 MHz band. But the telecom operators have highlighted that the price put forth by Trai is very expensive. Bharti Airtel even said that it won't bid in the auction for the spectrum at all if the price remains the same. However, the government is considering reducing the price of the 5G spectrum to be held in 2021.
