will-third-time-be-charm-for-Micromax

Micromax is a name that almost every Indian who has been aware of the smartphone industry in India for the last decade is familiar with. The company is making a comeback with its new sub-brand 'in' to the market. Micromax has planned to invest Rs 500 crores initially for building new products. The new brand 'in' has been positioned to compete with the Chinese smartphone manufacturers which once forced Micromax to go off the market. One thing worthy to note here is that this will be the third time Micromax will be entering the smartphone industry. For the unaware, the second time was with 'YU'. Let's take a look at the history of the company and what went wrong.

History

'Micromax Informatics' was incorporated as an IT software company which focused on developing embedded devices such as chipsets and processors. The company using the knowledge and resources it had pivoted to the mobile handset business. In 2010, Micromax had become one of the largest domestic companies engaged in low-cost feature smartphones in the country.  Further, in 2014, Micromax even surpassed Samsung in terms of sales. In the same year, the company became the first Indian smartphone brand to sell in Russia. All this contributed to making Micromax the 10th largest smartphone vendor in the world in 2014.

Then on December 18, 2014, Micromax started a subsidiary company called 'YU Televentures'. It was a joint venture between Micromax Informatics Limited and Cyanogen Inc. 'YU' introduced the Cyanogen OS for the users with the company also holding the rights to the third-party version of Android in India. The OS was later discontinued in December 2016 when things didn't seem to be working out for the company.

What Went Wrong for Micromax?

So after all these achievements and success, what went so wrong that it forced the company to go off the market. The reason wasn't so much what Micromax was doing wrong but what it wasn't doing. Chinese smartphone brands such as Xiaomi and OnePlus had come to the market and by 2016 they were gaining popularity at a rapid pace.

The users started getting attracted to the price point that these Chinese smartphone manufacturers were offering. No one's denying that Micromax wasn't offering its smartphones with power-packed features. But when compared with what the Chinese companies were offering, it became a little lacklustre deal for the consumers.

Micromax didn't have any competitive advantage on its hand. However,  fast forward to 2020, there are a few things the company can do on its comeback which can put it ahead of the Chinese brands.

What Can Micromax Do to Be Successful Again?

One of the things that Micromax can do with its comeback brand 'in' is market its smartphones as in support of the 'Make in India' initiative of the government. A lot of consumers are preferring Indian brands over Chinese brands because of the recent border tensions between the two nations.

Another thing is to release 5G supportive feature smartphones at a low cost. Micromax will have to offer users smartphones that have flagship features like OnePlus and Xiaomi do at a low-cost. It can benefit the company in a major way since it is an Indian brand. Micromax can also partner with telecom companies such as Jio for releasing low-cost 5G smartphones in the future like Google has.

jio-aims-launch-5g-smartphone-under-rs5000

Reliance Jio, the largest wireless operator in India is aiming to launch a 5G smartphone for less than Rs 5000. According to a PTI report citing an unnamed official, the company will gradually reduce the price of its upcoming 5G smartphone further to Rs 2,500 to Rs 3000 when it scales up the operation. The 20 to 30 crore people who are currently using the 2G connection in India would be the prime targets for the low-cost 5G smartphones. The current price range for 5G smartphones is around Rs 27,000 and Jio's move to introduce a low-cost 5G smartphone would be a massive game changer in the smartphone market, if launched. PTI highlighted that the operator has not provided a response to its query.

Low-cost 5G in India: Jio Set to Become a Significant Player

At its recent 43rd Annual General Meeting, Reliance Jio's Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani announced his plan to make India '2G-mukt'. He said that the company would accelerate the migration of 350 million Indians who are currently using the 2G feature to affordable smartphones. The new speculation of the company launching 5G smartphones at low cost aligns with this announcement.

Reliance Jio has already capped an investment arrangement from the technology giant Google. The US tech giant would invest Rs 33,737 crore for 7.73% stake in Jio Platform that also houses telecom operations of Reliance Industries. Google's investment was a part of its plan to invest US$10 billion in India over the next five to seven years. According to Mukesh Ambani, the tech giant intends to partner with Jio to build an Android-based smartphone operating system.

Notably, Reliance Jio is also working on 5G equipment and has requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to allocate spectrum for trials of its 5G products.

Jio Platforms Received Multiple Investments from Global Investors

Prior to Google, Facebook had announced an investment of Rs 43,574 crores for an 9.99% stake in Jio Platforms. The US chipmaker Qualcomm was another leading technology player that announced its plan to invest in Jio Platforms. Qualcomm plans to invest Rs 730 crore in Jio Platforms for 0.15% stake.

Jio also has other global investors including Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Mubadala, private equity firms Silver Lake, Vista Equity Partners, General Atlantic, KKR, TPG, L Catterton and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).

vi-unveils-prepaid-weekend-data-rollover-benefit

Vi (Vodafone Idea) is now offering its prepaid users 'Weekend Data Rollover' benefit. The company highlighted that its new promotional offer would be valid from October 19, 2020 to January 17, 2021. The Weekend Data Rollover scheme is said to be only applicable on unlimited prepaid plans priced at Rs 249 or more. It will allow the users to carry forward all the unused data between Monday and Friday to the weekends. Using the saved data, users can enjoy HD streaming and more downloading on weekends when they are generally free from office work. However, it has to be noted that the accumulated data over the weekdays will expire once the weekend is over. More on the story ahead.

Vi Allowing Prepaid Users to Accumulate Unused Data for Weekends

The 'Weekend Data Rollover' benefit will be available to users for no additional cost. As highlighted above, the scheme is applicable to those users who recharge with any of the plans priced at Rs 249 and above.

For example, Let's say a user has a plan wherein he/she gets 2GB daily data. On Monday, out of the 2GB, he/she only used 1GB. On the following days as well, the user consumed the same amount of data. This would mean that on the weekend, the user will have an extra 5GB of data to download and stream on top of daily quota.

Vi has not put any caps on the amount of data that can be accumulated for the weekend. So if the user is essentially not using his/her data at all over the week, he/she will be eligible to get the complete leftover data at the end of the week.

"For utilizing the benefit of roll-over data for UL packs near expiry, customers need to recharge within pack validity," the operator highlighted on its terms and conditions page. "Customers recharging within pack validity will be able to accumulate and carry forward the daily data benefit of Unlimited packs which are expiring or expired. In-case customer doesn't recharge within pack validity, they will forfeit the accumulated data."

To check the amount of data that has been accumulated for the user, he/she can head to the Active Packs & Services section of the mobile app of Vi. Another way of doing so is by using the SSD code *199#.

The users subscribed to double data prepaid plans from Vi will also get the benefit of accumulated data for the weekend. In case a user's plan is about to expire and there is accumulated data in the user's account, then he/she needs to recharge again without any delay. If there is a gap between the new recharge with an eligible plan and the expiry of the old plan, the accumulated data will be forfeited.

Vi has highlighted prepaid data vouchers eligible for weekend data roll over scheme

The Weekend data rollover scheme is said to be applicable on multiple entry level prepaid plans such as Rs 249, Rs 297, Rs 299, Rs 398, Rs 399, Rs 599, Rs 299, Rs 449, Rs 699 and Rs 595. Further, the top-tier prepaid packs including Rs 795, Rs 819, Rs 1197, Rs 2399 and Rs 2595 are also said to be applicable for the weekend data roll over scheme.

Paytm, the Indian digital payment and technology platform on Monday said that it will be "partnering with various card issuers to introduce co-branded cards" in the market. The company said that it is keen on transforming the credit card market by enabling 'new to credit' users to be part of the credit card user base. Paytm said that its 'Next Generation Credit Cards' are intended to "democratise the access to a formal credit system for the masses." The company in a release said that it intends to issue two million cards in the next 12 to 18 months.

Paytm to Introduce Various Co-Branded Cards in 12 to 18 Months

Paytm said that its co-branded cards would provide "complete control" to the cardholders to handle their transactions in real-time.

“In our country, credit cards are still considered a product for the affluent sections of the society and not everyone can avail of its benefits," Bhavesh Gupta, CEO, Paytm Lending, said in the release. "At Paytm, our aim is to provide credit cards that benefit India's aspiring youth and evolved professionals."

The company said that its upcoming co-branded cards will feature "one-touch services" that would enable users to change security pin number, update address, block the card or request duplicate card.

Paytm highlighted that the users are not required to visit a branch or call customer care support and that it has "digitised the entire credit card experience" on its app.

"These cards are designed to help them lead a healthier financial life through managing and analysing the spends to make well-informed decisions," Gupta said. "This can transform the credit market by bringing ‘new to credit’ users into the formal economy.”

Paytm Partnered with Citi in 2019 for Paytm First Card

Paytm said that the app will enable users to pick a "convenient time" for the collection of documents with the platform than providing users to check progress on card issuance and delivery.

"The seamless application process will reduce the rate of application rejections and will enable more people to participate in the formal credit system," the company said in the release. "Paytm Credit cards will have a transparent & compelling rewards program with assured cashback on every transaction."

The company highlighted that the reward points on its upcoming credit cards will have no expiry and that users will be able to utilise those points for "various payments" within Paytm ecosystem.

It has to be noted that Paytm in 2019 had launched its co-branded credit card with Citi. The Paytm First Card offers multiple benefits to users such as 1% cashback on transactions and annual fee waiver if user transaction exceeds Rs 50,000 per year.
