Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker Review

Xiaomi has been pushing very hard to provide customers with everything they need. Be it shoes, speakers, light, TV, smartphone, or more, Xiaomi is selling it. The Chinese tech giant wants to create an ecosystem of products for its customers so that they don't have to go to any other company or brand for any of the products. One thing is true for Xiaomi in every case, any product that you purchase from the company, you are bound to get a great value for it. Almost every product from Xiaomi is priced at a reasonable range so that customers with lesser disposable income can also purchase it. Today I am going to review one such product for you. It is the Mi Smart Speaker. It comes with Google Assistant. I am going to tell you if it is worth your money or not.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker Review: Everything That is Right With the Product

The Mi Smart Speaker comes with a basic design. There is nothing extra about the design, but it will sit well with most of the drawing rooms. It has a metal grill all over its body out of which the sound comes out. The reason why this design stands out is that it is nothing alike from what Google and Amazon offer to its customers.

For controlling the speaker, there are four buttons on the surface. These buttons consist of volume up, volume down, mute, and play/pause functions. There is a very small logo of Mi on the bottom front of the speaker. The bottom of the speaker is made of rubber so that it doesn't slip on the surface it is kept. One of the coolest things about the Mi Smart Speaker is that there is a ring light on the top which will come to life whenever you get a notification.

Another thing that I really liked about the Mi Smart Speaker is its capability of understanding commands even when I was standing across the room. One thing that is easily noticeable is that the Mi Smart Speaker is taller than the smart speakers from Google and Amazon. But it quite heavy as well compared to the other smart speakers.

For sound, there is a 2.5-inch driver inside the speaker which can deliver the sound of up to 12W. The quality of the sound is quite impressive and compared to speakers from Google and Amazon; it is not behind in any way. For connectivity, there is Bluetooth 4.2, which is not bad. Another great feature is that you can connect to two devices in a go and get more sound.

There is also Chromecast in-built in the speaker and you can configure its settings via the Google Home app. You can also add the Mi Home Speaker with your other speakers with Google Assistant and Chromecast with the help of Google Home app.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker: Things that Can be Improved

Surprisingly, there isn't much that can be complained about the Mi Smart Speaker. The sound is great; functionality is almost the same as smart speakers from Google and Amazon. The only thing that may happen is that when Google sends out updates for the Google Assistant, the update might not reach the Mi Smart Speakers directly because the firmware is handled by Xiaomi and not Google. Apart from that, there is nothing else that can be counted as a negative about the product.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker: Price, Competition, and Verdict

Let's start with the price of the Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker. It is launched in India for a price of Rs 3,499. It is a price range where Google and Amazon might feel a bit nervous. The direct competition for Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker is Amazon Echo Dot 4 which is priced at Rs 4,499 and the Google Nest Mini, which is also priced at Rs 4,499.

Xiaomi has launched a smart speaker and priced it Rs 1,000 lesser than what Google and Amazon are offering and still offers almost everything right from the features to quality the same as of its competition. So is it worth your money?

The answer is pretty much obvious by now. Yes, the Mi Smart Speaker is worth your money. If you want to move from Google and Amazon and try out a new product in the line of smart speakers, then the Xiaomi Mi Smart speaker is what you should get. It comes with the Google Assistant, so if you want Alexa, this is not for you, but if you want Google Assistant, then surely consider the Mi Smart Speaker. Another reason why I would recommend this to you would be its price. It is priced lesser than what it should come for. One thing that Xiaomi has always done perfectly is to win customers hearts with its pricing. You get more and more by paying less. It is a perfect product in a sense looking at what competes in the market at the moment. And guess what, the speaker is currently selling for just Rs 2,999 on Flipkart as part of the Big Billion Days.

Opensignal, a mobile analytics company on Tuesday said that the users in Ahmedabad had the "best games experience" followed by Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. The company said that it analysed the mobile network experience in 48 cities across India to see how the cities compare on its Games Experience metric. Opensignal said that its Games Experience metric charts "how mobile phone users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator network." The company highlighted that the network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter impact overall multiplayer games experience.

Ahmedabad Emerges as Ideal City for Mobile Gamers

According to Opensignal, Ahmedabad and Mumbai were the only Tier 1 cities in its list of top 10 cities in India for best mobile games experience. Surat, Bhopal, Thane, Rajkot are the other cities in the top 10 list for mobile games experience.

The games that were tested for the study is said to include Battle Royale, Call of Duty, PUBG and Clash Royale.

Opensignal said that Gujarat and Maharashtra "dominated" its study with seven of the top 10 cities in India said to be from either of the states.

Further, the company said that only four out of eight Tier 1 cities were under the top 20 cities in India to deliver over 50 points. Opensignal Games Experience metric is said to be on a scale of zero to 100 with Ahmedabad scoring 71.7 points.

India Among Top Five Markets for Mobile Gaming

The company highlighted that India is among the top five markets for mobile gaming in terms of user base.

"On the back of growing penetration of affordable smartphones, low-cost data, and improved bandwidth, the number of online gamers has risen exponentially over the last couple of years," the firm said in its release.

The company highlighted that lower latency enhances the reaction time of players in action games while packet loss relates to player action never taking an effect. Further, jitter is said to be "variability of the arrival time of data packets."

"All data packets take time to travel between locations — for example between a player and the game server — but often the amount of delay varies between packets," the company said in the release.

CyberMedia Research (CMR), a firm engaged in industry intelligence and marketing services on Tuesday said that nearly one in every two users in India are seeking an alternative to Chinese smartphone brands. The firm is said to have conducted a "nationwide" survey across Tier 1 and Tier II cities of India for its 'CMR Insights On the Go Survey.' CMR said that the magnitude of anti-China sentiment is comparatively higher in Tier II cities than Tier I cities. Crucially, it was said that one in four retailers have experienced anti-China emotion in the market.

Indians Seek Alternative to Chinese Smartphone Brands

The firm said that retailers' preference of Chinese smartphone brands have also taken a dip due to anti-China sentiment.

"Indian smartphone users have predominantly been using Chinese smartphones," Amit Sharma, analyst at CMR, said in a release. "In Q2 2020, the cumulative market share of Chinese brands fell to 73%, akin to the levels last seen in Q3 2019. In addition to COVID-19 and consequent supply side challenges, the anti-China sentiment also emerged as a key factor."

CMR said that one in five retailers face "difficulties in convincing" users to buy devices sold by Chinese brands with the firm highlighting that the trend is "more pronounced" in Tier II cities. However, three in seven retailers are said to have felt that India's dispute with China will not cause an impact on their ability to sell devices made by Chinese brands.

"The broad takeaway from the study is that there exists a chasm between those who feel angry and seek alternatives to their Chinese phones, and those who remain unaffected by current sentiments," Satya Mohanty, head of industry consulting group at CMR, said in the release.

Lava Favoured by Around 48% of Potential Users

The company also shared "key highlights" from CMR Insights On the Go Survey that reveals that around 48% of the potential users who are seeking alternatives have favoured Lava. Further, one in three users in the country are said to be preferring Samsung over rival brands with the South Korean giant also said to have high loyalty among its existing and potential users.

"The Lava brand resonates strongly with consumers and retailers alike, with their overall value proposition," Sharma said. "This brand association is especially stronger in Aspirational India. The current market sentiments indicate major gains for Lava as a potential alternative. It remains to be seen how Lava is able to convert these into strong market performance."

Indian Government to Soon Lift Higher Basic Customs Duty on Mobiles, TVs

indian-government-lift-customs-duty-mobiles-tvs

All the smartphones and TVs which are shipped to India at the moment attract high basic customs duty (BCD). This is not just to increase the cost for the end Indian consumer, but to protect the local producers. The local Indian producers are said to be currently at capacity building stage right now so that they can also manufacture smartphones and its components. The placement of higher BCD protects them marginally. But this protection is not going to be there for long. As per a report from Mint, the government is looking to introduce an end date for the higher BCD. More on the story ahead.

Government Aiming to Raise Capacity of Domestic Electronics Industry

BCD on both mobile handsets and television is 20% currently. Even for companies who want to manufacture locally such as Apple, many of the components of the smartphone attract a BCD of 15%-20%. The government from October 1, 2020, also imposed a 10% customs duty on display parts and touch panels of the smartphone as well.

For the unaware, BCD is an extra tax which is put on top of all the indirect taxes on the imported products and materials. This makes it expensive for the end-users to buy as well the company to manufacture its products in India.

However, the government might remove the higher BCD that is imposed on mobile handsets and TVs. This is because the higher BCD is said to be only temporary protection and not a permanent measure. Mint highlights that India wants to portray itself as an open economy and the elimination of tariff measures will send positive signals to the world.

With enhancing and motivating local production, the Indian government is seeking to scale up its domestic electronics industry to $400 billion in FY25 from $59 billion in FY18. The US and some other countries have already complained about the high tariffs that India is imposing on the technology products said to be against the principles of the Information Technology Agreement (ITA).

DoT Request for 5G Airwaves to be Considered by DoS, Defence Ministry

dot-request-5g-airwaves-considered-dos-defence
A few days back, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had asked the Department of Space (DoS) and the defence ministry to vacate the airwaves in high and medium-range frequency for the smooth rollout of 5G services. Now, as per a report from ET Telecom, an elite panel of secretaries has requested the defence ministry and DoS to consider the request put forth by DoT for vacating the airwaves. Both DoS and the defence ministry have said that they will consider the request. More on the story ahead.

DoT Wants the Airwaves in 26-28 GHz Bands and 3.3-3.6 GHz Bands

For smooth 5G services rollout, DoT wants 3000 units of premium millimetre waves in the 26-28 GHz bands and around 125 units in the 3.3-3.6 GHz bands. The DoS is said to have assured the officials that it is ready to give the airwaves to DoT in all the locations it is not already using the requested bandwidths.

The telecom operators have warned the government about the repercussions if they were not to get the requested bandwidths. The operators have said that the 5G rollout would be very costly without the access to that 26 GHz spectrum as India would not be able to tap into the global devices ecosystem. Multiple countries including USA, South Korea, China and Japan have backed super-efficient millimetre waves for 5G deployment.

At the same time, the report highlights that DoS is not keen to part with its airwaves due to its concern that it might cause interference between the 5G mobile networks and satellite. Meanwhile, the panel of secretaries have also asked the information & broadcasting and defence ministries to check if they have any 700 MHz idle bands. If so, it can also be re-assigned to DoT for 5G.

While the discussion around 5G airwaves is still going, the auction for 4G airwaves is all set to take place in early 2021. Followed by this, 5G spectrum auction might also take place in the year ahead.

However, the telecom operators are not said to be too excited about the 5G auction since the price set by the government for the spectrum is too costly.

Broadband: Should Speed Be the Lone Factor for Choosing Your Next ISP?

Posted: 19 Oct 2020 08:32 PM PDT

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/broadband-should-speed-be-the-lone-factor-for-choosing-your-next-isp/305376/, Broadband: Should Speed Be the Lone Factor for Choosing Your Next ISP?

broadband-speed-factor-choosing-isp
The first thing that we look at when we get a new internet connection is the kind of speed we will get. If the speed is sufficient, other things matter less. But is that the right way to choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or a broadband plan? The answer is no; There are several other things which a user needs to focus his/her attention on before they choose their ISP. So what are those things? For starters, the kind of over-the-top (OTT) benefits that the ISP offers with its broadband plans. Keep reading ahead to find out more about this.

How to Choose an ISP?

Speed is important, so if that is right, the next thing that you should look at is the kind of service that the ISP offers in your area. Getting 'internet service' is different from getting 'quality internet service'. Look into the feedback and reviews that people in your area are providing about various internet service providers. Because even if the speed offered is good, but the network and the service of the ISP are not reliable, the speed won't make any positive difference.

The next thing that you should look at is the amount of money that you are paying to the ISP for various plans. There are ISPs which provide broadband plans with good benefits but at a very high cost. Then there are other ISPs which offer cheaper plans, but the benefits are also less. Thus, compare the prices of the plans offered by different ISPs and ensure that you don't overpay for your plan.

The third thing would be to check the kind of OTT benefits that are available to you. Almost every ISP is offering OTT benefits with its broadband plans to the users now. Jio, for example, provides its users with several OTT benefits with its broadband plans. Some plans of JioFiber come with a free subscription of all the major OTT platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

Another thing which most of the people usually ignore is down-time and up-time of the internet connection. Ensure that the ISP you are trusting has an excellent record when it comes to up-time of its internet connection. In case you are purchasing an internet connection for your business which relies on the internet to function, you need a reliable internet service which is up 99.9% of the time in a year.

Hence, it is not just speed but a variety of factors when it comes to choosing the internet service provider. There is OTT benefits, feedback of service in your area, up-time and down-time, and the kind of money that you are paying for your internet plan.
