| Why You Must Upgrade Your WiFi Router Right Now Posted: 23 Oct 2020 08:26 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/why-upgrade-your-wifi-router-right-now/306118/, Why You Must Upgrade Your WiFi Router Right Now
Reasons for Why You Must Upgrade Your RouterThe first reason is outdated router firmware. Generally, old Wi-Fi routers don't get proper firmware updates and it adds to the issues of poor connectivity. If you get a new router, chances are that you will get it with the latest firmware. Even if not with the latest, the new routers come with an ability to update the firmware automatically. If you want to use a Wi-Fi plan with gigabit speeds, then you need a Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) router. Old routers such as the ones with Wi-Fi 4 standards can only support speeds of up to 600 Mbps. Thus you should get a Wi-Fi router which supports at least Wi-Fi 5 or even the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard. Another reason why you should upgrade your Wi-Fi router right away is security. Old routers don't get firmware updates and are prone to be attacked. But when you use a new Wi-Fi router, you don't have to worry about security a lot. New routers come with the latest security systems and offer stronger firewalls to the network. Also, with old routers, the configuration would become a pain for an average user. To change any of the settings such as name or Wi-Fi password, the user would need to connect the router with a computer. Doing that, the user would have to follow up by logging in on the configuration page and then find menus to do the simplest of things. But with new generation routers, there are apps which can do all of this for the user. Simply by logging-in on the app, the user can change the password and network settings of the Wi-Fi router. Crucially, connectivity is important to every user. With old WiFi routers, users will find a lot of dead zones in the house where Wi-Fi connectivity is almost zero or too bad to use. But with the new generation Wi-Fi routers, users don't have to worry about any of this. There is an option to attach more than two antennas for better coverage of Wi-Fi if the user lives in a large house. Apple Pricing Strategy Needs Serious ConsiderationCanalys, an independent analyst company on Thursday said that Apple has "regained momentum" in India in the third quarter of 2020. Rushabh Doshi, research director at Canalys, said in a release that "Apple is finally paying attention to India." "It has opened a direct online store, giving it several new angles in its go-to-market strategy, such as utilizing device trade-ins to provide purchase incentives, or bundling AirPods with iPhones to make them more appealing," Doshi said in the release. Canalys highlighted that Apple has shipped around 800,000 units in India in the third quarter of 2020. "However, its new iPhone 12 family will be a tough sell in India this year, as network operators do not yet have the infrastructure for mass-market 5G deployment, erasing a key feature of the devices," Doshi said. "Not to forget, Apple's pricing strategy for its new iPhones in India needs serious consideration." | Indian Smartphone Market Rebounds, Xiaomi Continues to Lead Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:32 AM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/indian-smartphone-market-rebounds-xiaomi-lead/306075/, Indian Smartphone Market Rebounds, Xiaomi Continues to Lead
Samsung Clinches Second Spot with its StrategyHowever, Canalys said that the improved shipments that Xiaomi registered in the 2020 third quarter has enabled the company to extend its market share to 26.1% in the country. "Smartphone vendors are definitely bullish," Adwait Mardikar, Canalys Analyst, said in the release. "While almost all vendors have shown positive shipment growth, the true winners are the online channels, who have been buoyed with a huge influx of devices ahead of the festive season."
Canalys said that Samsung has regained the second spot from Vivo with its "aggressive product portfolio and pricing strategy" working for the South Korean giant. Samsung is said to have registered an 7% growth in shipments with the company said to have shipped 10.2 million units in the third quarter. "Ongoing tension between India and China has been a hot topic in the past few months, but we have yet to see a significant impact on purchase decisions of mass-market customers," Varun Kannan, Canalys Research Analyst, said in the release. Chinese Vendors Accounted for 76% Total Smartphone ShipmentsDespite dropping to the third-largest smartphone brand in India, Vivo is said to have registered 19% growth to ship 8.8 million units in the third quarter of 2020. Realme and Oppo completed the top five with the companies shipping 8.7 million units and 6.1 million respectively in the 2020 third quarter. Canalys highlighted that the Chinese vendors accounted for 76% of total smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2020. In the same period in the previous year, the Chinese vendors are said to have accounted for 74% of total smartphone shipments. "However, the tensions have caused Chinese smartphone brands to act more conservatively in recent months, reducing their marketing spend, and carefully trying to project the image that they are important contributors to, and stakeholders in, the economic future of India," Kannan said. Meanwhile, Apple is said to have "regained momentum" in India with the Cupertino company shipping around 800,000 units in the third quarter of 2020. "The lockdown forced most of working India to stay at home and refrain from big-ticket spending on travel, food and beverages, increasing the overall dispensable income," Mardikar said. "On the other hand, unemployment has risen, impacting the lowest rungs of society most, and affecting the long-term outlook of India's smartphone market. As much of India remains physically disconnected, the smartphone has increasingly become a necessity not only for social connection but also for entertainment, education, banking, payment and more." | Parliamentary Standing Committee Dials Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea for 5G Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:51 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-bharti-airtel-vodafone-idea-5g/306041/, Parliamentary Standing Committee Dials Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea for 5G
Parliamentary Committee to Hear from Telecom Operators on 5GAccording to the agenda released by the Parliamentary Committee, the representatives from Ministry of Communications such as DoT along with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) would be touched on "India's preparedness for 5G." The Parliamentary Standing Committee in early August had also questioned the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on 5G preparedness and the reasons for its delay in India. Twenty members from Lok Sabha and 10 members from Rajya Sabha are part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology. Telecom Operators Need Over 1 Lakh Crore Investment for Pan India 5GMeanwhile, Motilal Oswal Financial Services in a research report on October 16, 2020 said that the telecom operators in India "may wait" for three or more years before deploying 5G technology. "With no new players, nascent use cases, limited incremental revenue potential, spectrum woes along with an inherently low ARPU structure in India, we believe telcos may wait for the 5G technology to stabilize globally and see a reduction in equipment cost, before deploying fresh technology," Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in its report. The firm also said that with the government pricing the 700 MHz band at an "exorbitant" rate, the mid-band spectrum between 3300 MHz to 3600 MHz would be "best suited" for the operators. Motilal Oswal said that the mid-band spectrum is suited due to its price and the quantity available. "However, given the coverage related difficulty of the mid-band spectrum, telcos may deploy 5G with a fallback dependency on 4G," the firm said in its report. "This could initially restrict 5G investments significantly to only high data consumption locations." Motilal Oswal said that the telecom operators would have to make investments on three components for 5G network including spectrum, sites and fiber. The firm said that investments required would be in the range of Rs 1.3 lakh crore to Rs 2.3 lakh crore for the pan-India low band and mid-band spectrum. However, Motilal Oswal highlighted that the investments should reduce to Rs 78,000 crore to Rs 1.3 lakh crore for the coverage in only Metros and category 'A' circles. "Undoubted, the quantum of investment is exorbitantly high given the stressed balance sheet of telcos and the low prevailing ARPUs," the firm said in its report. "Therefore, we believe in the initial phase, telcos may selectively choose spectrum in a few circles and run 5G for select enterprise-driven Internet of Things (IoT) operations." WhatsApp Web Users Can Make Voice and Video Calls SoonWaBetainfo, development tracker of WhatsApp has said that the social media giant is testing this feature on the app Version 2.2034.7. When the testings are complete and the stable version of the update is out, users will be able to make voice and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web. As per WaBetainfo, what's interesting is that the users won't even need to keep their smartphone connected to the internet all the time. Currently, to use WhatsApp Web, the user needs his/her smartphone to be connected with the internet. But now, users will be able to use their WhatsApp in four different devices at the same time and won't even need the smartphone connected to the internet. The stable release date for the version of the WhatsApp Web which will support voice and video calling is still unknown. Once the WhatsApp Web starts supporting calls (voice and video), it will be interesting to see how it fares off against the existing video calling and voice calling platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and other big apps. Meanwhile, a separate report highlights that the Android users will soon be able to unlock WhatsApp using their face. WhatsApp will be changing the ‘fingerprint lock’ to ‘Biometric lock’ and this will also support face unlocking for the user. At the same time, WhatsApp is also said to be working on other new features such as self-destructing messages and expiring media. Further, the users will see a new modern UI (user interface) in the Web version of the app. All these features mentioned above are already available in the beta version of the app. However, there is no clarity on when these features will make it to the stable version of WhatsApp. Original article: WhatsApp to Receive Face Unlock Support, WhatsApp Web to Soon Support Voice, Video Calls ©2020 TelecomTalk. | Broadband WiFi Problems that Everyone Faces, Here is How You Can Fix them Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:42 PM PDT This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/broadband-wifi-problems-everyone-faces-fix-them/305776/, Broadband WiFi Problems that Everyone Faces, Here is How You Can Fix them
Failure to Connect With WiFiIt is a very common problem that a lot of users face with their broadband Wi-Fi connections. Even after entering the right password multiple times, a user might be unable to connect to a Wi-Fi. You might even change the settings on your device to connect to your Wi-Fi network automatically whenever it is in range. But nothing might work. So there can be multiple causes to the issue. Sometimes there are minor glitches in your Wi-Fi. So try rebooting/restarting it. Once that is done, go and choose the 'Forget' option for your Wi-Fi network on your device. Then connect with the network again by entering the correct credentials. Most likely, the device should be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. Internet Suddenly Stops WorkingSometimes, you might look at the signal of your Wi-Fi in your device and it might reflect that everything is okay. But when you try to connect with the Wi-Fi, you see that your internet connection isn't working. The common cause behind the issue is the router. You might see your router blinking red light or even turn off depending on the kind of router that you are using. This can happen if the network of the router is overloaded. One simple fix to this would be to restart the router. It prompts the router to find a newly assigned IP address. WiFi DropoutsOne of the most frustrating things that a broadband user can face is Wi-Fi drop-outs. During a Wi-Fi drop-out, the network keeps on coming and going. This can be even more frustrating for people who are into online gaming and streaming. The cause behind these drop-outs is high latency and network congestion. The best solution to this would be to download a Wi-Fi analyser app on your device. It helps you in identifying the ideal channel to make your connection. When you live in a residential area where there are a lot of wireless networks, it is better that you choose the Wi-Fi channel manually for connecting. Once manually connected, run a speed test again and see if there is an improvement in your connection. Device IssuesSometimes, the Wi-Fi might work well in certain devices but not that well in other ones. This might happen because of the Wi-Fi settings. Routers generally come with a mixed 802.11 mode setting. But if you have changed it to 802.11n only, then it can lead to connectivity issues on a few devices. To solve this issue, simply change the router setting back to mixed 802.11 modes. Original article: Broadband WiFi Problems that Everyone Faces, Here is How You Can Fix them ©2020 TelecomTalk.
