Why Indian Telecom Operators Are Contemplating Mobile Tariff Hikes?

why-telecom-operators-contemplating-mobile-tariff-hikes
The Indian telecom sector showed its prowess amid the crisis as it stood tall and provided critical support for the functioning of the entire economy. The telecom sector in India, which offers the lowest tariffs in the world, is a crucial sector for the country. Not only that, but its contribution is significant to the country's GDP and it is a growth enabler for other sectors as well.

But still, it is bogged down by the existing challenges of capex, tariffs, OTTs, etc, resulting in plunging revenues. The financially stressed telecom industry is already grappling with AGR payments, spectrum payments, high Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC), License Fee (LF), USOF and other levies resulting in the sector being overtaxed. And, the need of the hour is that it improves its ARPU.

Why Multiple Tariff Hikes Needed?

The sector hiked tariffs by about 25% in December 2019, hoping for the revival of the industry. But still, as per experts, the telecom sector needs multiple rounds of tariff hikes to cover their cost of capital and improve ARPUs. According to a brokerage firm Motilal Oswal, "Each player needs an Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) hike as Vodafone Idea needs to survive, Reliance Jio needs to justify its high valuations in the recent investments and Bharti Airtel needs to deleverage."

"Unlike the last 10 years, Bharti Airtel could garner more than 5% FCF yield, while Reliance Jio could do better with respectable RoCE. This should allow healthy re-rating. Vodafone Idea's fate is dependent on the AGR case resolution even as we await stability in market share," it mentioned in a report.

As per Kotak Institutional Equities, while Airtel has no pressing cash flow-mismatch or leverage issues, a desperate Vi must single-mindedly gun for price hikes as quickly as possible. New Street Research estimates Vi needs to increase tariffs by at least 20% in November or December to improve its cash position and service its first AGR instalment due in March 2021.

Pump in Money for Latest Technologies

In addition, to ride on the next growth bandwagon, it is important that the sector invests in new technologies. Amid the Covid crisis, the telecom operators started using new technology like massive MIMO at a scale not seen anywhere else in the world, increased capacity for setting up virtual boardrooms, providing solutions to stay connected with business activities, ensuring integrated business connectivity, and deploying suites of digital tools for the enterprise customers.

Fortunately, during this span, the operators got fully equipped to handle the huge traffic load. Mobile, fixed broadband, DTH, and fibre networks were fully geared to serve customers better.

All the telecom operators began setting up the business contingency plan (BCP) mode to manage the surge in bandwidth as more people increasingly started to work from home than they did before the lockdown.

Moving forward, the consumers should prepare themselves for a price hike as an investment in new technologies means an improvement in telecom services. A survey by brokerage firm JP Morgan showed 88% users' ability to absorb 10% tariff hikes and high propensity to pay for higher speeds and content.

Broadband Plans Which Come for Less Yet Provide More, Compared

broadband-plans-less-provide-more-compared
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched new broadband offerings following the revamp of plans from JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber. The state-run telco is availing users with broadband plans of the same structure as provided by JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber. So now, BSNL, JioFiber, and Airtel Xstream Fiber all compete in the range of low-cost broadband plans. It will be interesting to see what each of these operators have to offer with their cheapest broadband plans. Let's find out.

Airtel Xstream Fiber Rs 499 Plan

Post the revamp of plans; the Rs 799 plan is no longer the cheapest broadband offering from Airtel Xstream Fiber. It is the Rs 499 plan now. The internet service provider (ISP) offers users 40 Mbps speed in addition to unlimited data with this plan. Unlimited data for Xstream Fiber users means 3.3TB (3,333GB) data, and there is unlimited voice calling included as well. Users also get Airtel Thanks benefits along with several different OTT benefits such as Airtel Xstream Premium, Voot Basic, Eros Now, Hungama Play, Shemaroo Me, Hoichoi, and Ultra.

JioFiber Rs 399 Plan

JioFiber also revamped its plans a few weeks back, and its cheapest broadband plan comes for Rs 399. It ships with 30 Mbps speed and 3.3TB (3,300)GB (unlimited data). Users also get unlimited voice calling with this plan. But the strange thing is there are no OTT benefits included with this plan at all.

BSNL Rs 449 Plan

BSNL started offering the Rs 449 plan from October 1, 2020, and currently, it stands as the cheapest broadband plan offered by the state-run telco. It offers users 30 Mbps speed with 3.3TB (3,300GB) data along with unlimited calling to any network within India. Post consumption of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data, speed gets reduced to 2 Mbps.

BSNL has highlighted that it will discontinue the broadband plan from December 29. So users who want to benefit from it can subscribe to the plan right now. There is no long-term availability of this plan.

Which Plan is Better?

It is a no brainer that the cheapest broadband plan offered by Airtel Xstream Fiber is the winner here. There are multiple OTT benefits along with unlimited calling and 33GB more monthly data than what both JioFiber's and BSNL's cheapest broadband offers. There seems to be no difference between the cheapest plans offered by JioFiber and BSNL except for the price where BSNL is a bit on the expensive end. Airtel Xstream Fiber's cheapest plan is Rs 100 than the JioFiber's plan and Rs 50 more than the BSNL's plan, but it is worth it.

Trai Gives Telcos Extra 30 Days for Updating Tariff Communication Structure

trai-telcos-extra-30days-updating-tariff-structure
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has given telecom companies another 30 days for complying with its latest order of tariff communication structure. According to the order, the tariff structure needs to be updated in the websites' of the operators' in addition to apps and customer care centres as well. Retail outlets will also need to comply with the order. As per an ET Telecom report, basically, at every point of sale, the operators need to communicate the latest tariff structure with the users. More on the story ahead.

Trai Extends Deadline for the Telcos by 30 Days to Update Tariff Structure

As per Trai's order, telcos need to ensure that combo vouchers, special tariff vouchers (STVs), and add-on packs must include all the details of the rates that are applicable on telecom products such as SMS, data, and voice calling/units. For all the non-telecom products when offered in bundles must also reflect the usage allowances and the further charges which are applicable on more than entitled usage of the services.

The regulatory body provided the extension of the deadline upon request from the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which represents Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). COAI said that the operators need more time since the changes will have to be made on the websites and apps, which require IT and design support.

To COAI's request, Trai has extended the deadline for complying with the latest tariff communication structure for the telcos to November 2, 2020. The newest tariff order from Trai will ensure that the users don't pick a plan and feel cheated later on.

Upon several complaints by the users, last November, Trai had started a review on the current system of publishing tariff orders by the operators. Thus the regulatory body has introduced changes to the system following which tariffs will become more transparent for the users. This will allow the users to make informed choices and pick the best prepaid or postpaid plan for themselves. Trai has asked the operators to submit a compliance report within 15 days.

Airtel Xstream Box vs Tata Sky Binge+: Which STB Leads the Race?

airtel-xstream-box-tatasky-binge-stb-race
A few weeks back, TelecomTalk reported about the price cut that Tata Sky Binge+ Set-Top Box (STB) saw. Its price came down from Rs 3999 to Rs 2999 without any reductions in its offerings. For the unaware, it is an Android-based STB which allows users to access both over-the-top (OTT) content and satellite TV. But it is not the only Android-based STB out there. Tata Sky Binge+ gets serious competition from Airtel Xstream Box. The Airtel Xstream STB is also an Android-based STB but is now actually priced lower than the Tata Sky Binge+ at Rs 2499. So which one should you choose between the two? Keep reading ahead to find out.

Airtel Xstream Box

The Airtel Xstream Box allows users to access both OTT and satellite TV content as well. The users purchasing the Airtel Xstream STB receive complimentary access to Airtel Xstream Premium for one month for no additional cost. The users while making the payment also get an option to choose – 'Hotstar VIP, ZEE5 Premium, and Xstream Premium for 1 year' for Rs 1,699. On top of this, currently, Airtel Digital TV is offering users a coupon code 'ADTV10' with 10% flat discount which can be applied to their purchase of the STB.

So with the coupon code, the price of the STB will reduce from Rs 2,499 to Rs 2,249 giving users a discount of Rs 250. Along with the purchase, the users will also get a 1-year warranty on the STB worth Rs 100 for no additional cost.

However, Airtel Xstream Fiber users can get the Airtel Xstream STB effectively for Rs 1,500 which is actually refundable in the future.

Tata Sky Binge+

Coming to the Tata Sky Binge+ STB, as mentioned, it saw a price cut a few weeks back of Rs 1,000 and is now priced at Rs 2,999. It comes with a free Binge subscription of 6 months. The Binge subscription includes Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5 Premium, SunNXT, Voot Select, Voot Kids, Hungama Play, Eros Now, and ShemarooMe. The users also get a free three months subscription of Amazon Prime Video at no extra cost.

One important thing to note is that the price of the Binge service has been increased from Rs 249 per month to Rs 299 per month now.

Which One Should You Choose?

In the past, we have had several comparisons between the two STBs with one piping the other in terms of price or bundled offers. However, after the current price cuts, it is really hard to choose between the two. The offerings are almost identical from both the STBs. Even though Tata Sky Binge+ STB is priced Rs 500 more, it is a bit ahead of the Airtel Xstream Box due to the free Binge service that it provides users with. Meanwhile, the only free OTT subscription that Airtel Xstream Box users get is the Xstream Premium.

However, the Airtel Xstream Fiber users can get the STB for refundable security of Rs 1,500 which makes it a good deal. The Xstream Fiber users will receive access to multiple OTT apps which makes the deal even more sweet. Thus if you already have an Airtel Xstream Fiber connection, the Xstream Box would be a no-brainer. However, for non-Airtel Xstream Fiber users who want to access OTT apps, the Tata Sky Binge+ is a better option since its Binge service bundles all those subscriptions for you at a very cheap monthly cost.
