gubbare-vedantu-channels-now-added-airtel-digital

Airtel Digital TV has added three new channels including 'Gubbare' and two 'Vedantu' channels on its platform. While Gubbare is a kids channel, Vedatu offers educational content to students on multiple streams including those preparing for JEE and NEET. The development is on the heels of the operator in early October adding two Aakash channels targeting students preparing for JEE and NEET. Airtel on Tuesday said that it added 549,000 (Direct-to-Home) users in its second quarter ending September 30, 2020. More details on the story ahead.

Airtel Digital TV Adds 'Gubbare' and 'Vedantu'

Talking about the first newly added channel 'Gubbare', it is available on channel number 465. It is a channel made for kids. 'Gubbare' offers kids entertaining animated content and is available for Rs 0.65 per month for the subscribers.

Coming to the second newly added channel, it is 'Vedantu'. The two different Vedantu channels are available on '1666' and '1667' on the Airtel Digital TV platform. Both the Vedantu channels are educational in nature.

Another thing to note about these Vedantu channels is that both of them are under testing phase for the Airtel Digital TV.

There is not a lot of information available about 'Vedantu' in regards to the type of educational content that the channel is going to offer on the Airtel Digital TV platform. It can be assumed that both the Vedantu channels will also help the subscribers in preparing for competitive exams such as the 'Aakash' channels.

For the unaware, Airtel Digital TV added two new educational Aakash channels a few days back namely 'Aakash EduTv-JEE' and 'Aakash EduTv-NEET'. The Aakash EduTv-JEE aims to help students prepare for the JEE exam and the Aakash EduTv-NEET helps students in preparing for the NEET exam. It is interesting to see Airtel Digital TV adding new educational channels in line with helping subscribers and students learn from their homes.

bsnl-2g-spectrum-license-yet-to-renewed
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is yet to renew its 2G spectrum license that expired in February, 2020, New Indian Express said in a report citing an unnamed BSNL official. "Sources" have told the publication that "talks are going on" between BSNL and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) over the 2G spectrum license renewal for two more years. It has been recently reported that a DoT committee had recommended that BSNL should not purchase 2G equipment even for replacement.

DoT Likely to Give its Nod for BSNL 2G License Renewal

The BSNL official told the publication that the operator is in the "final stages of discussion" and that the DoT is likely to give its nod to BSNL for its 2G license renewal. Crucially, the BSNL official also said to have highlighted that it is not possible for the operator to do away with 2G services.

According to a report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in late September, the total wireless data usage in India increased to 22,854,131TB during the quarter ending March, 2020. The Trai report highlights that 2G data usage during the quarter was 153,716TB translating to 0.76% of the total wireless data usage. In comparison, the Trai report highlighted that 4G users accounted for 95.83% of the total wireless data usage.

According to the reports, the DoT committee in its recommendations have said that the operator should emulate countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Norway in bidding farewell to 2G services.

It has to be noted that the government of India in October 2019, announced that BSNL would receive 4G spectrum as part of the revival package that also included Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). While multiple elements of BSNL revival package has been implemented, the state-run operator is said to have not received its 4G spectrum.

The Telecom Subscription Data as on July 31, 2020, highlights that BSNL has 10.31% market share in the country with the operator gaining 388,326 users in July.

Bharti Airtel, the second largest wireless operator in India is "well-poised" with or without the tariff hikes, Dolat Capital said on Tuesday. Dolat Capital in a report said that Airtel is "well poised to gain market share and grow even in absence" of the tariff hikes. The second largest wireless operator in India on Tuesday reported its second quarter financial results for the period ending September 30, 2020 with Airtel posting its "highest ever consolidated quarterly revenues." Airtel said that its consolidated quarterly revenues were up 22% year-over-year while the operator also highlighted that it added 14.4 million 4G data users in its second quarter.

Analysts Bullish on Bharti Airtel

Dolat Capital said that Airtel registered "strong all-round beat" in its second quarter of the current financial year "across both India Wireless and Africa." The firm also said that the "strong business trajectory" of the operator and its "reasonable valuations should re-impose investor confidence and lead to reversal of some of its recent underperformance."

"While tariff increase is a welcome potential trigger and inevitable for a three player market structure, Bharti is well-poised to gain market share and grow even in absence of the same," Dolat Capital said in its report. "In our view, Investors would be better-off not-losing the sight on long-term potential upsides for short-term delay in tariff hikes."

The second largest wireless operator in India reported that its mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) at Rs 162 for the quarter ended September 30, 2020. In the same period in the previous year, Airtel registered an mobile ARPU of Rs 128.

Meanwhile, ICICI Securities in its report on Wednesday said that the Airtel delivered an "impressive all round performance."

"Bharti's India mobile print shows marked improvement in many areas such as growth in total subs without ARPU dilution which shows quality of customer addition; lower churn rate increasing life-time value of customers and continued delivery of 4G net add, which has now likely matched the market leader," ICICI Securities said in its report.

Bharti Airtel 4G Subscriber Addition Ahead of Jio

Dolat Capital highlighted that the Bharti Airtel subscriber base additions is a "key positive after several quarters."

"We believe Bharti's market share in 4G smartphone additions to be ahead of Jio in Q2," Dolat Capital said in its research report.

ICICI Securities in its research report also highlighted that the Airtel subscriber additions "have come at the same ARPU" indicating that the operator has made "high quality" subscriber additions.

"We believe higher 4G subs base will enable Bharti to better transfer tariff hike into ARPU whenever it happens (and believe it is matter on 'when' and not 'if')," ICICI Securities said in its report.

Counterpoint Research on Tuesday said in a report that HMD Global's Nokia phones led its 2020 Trust Rankings for the second successive year. The company offering industry analysis of the mobile and technology markets said that its trust rankings are based on four key points including software, security updates, build quality and devices recommended for enterprises. Counterpoint Research said that the Nokia phones had a lead across multiple price tiers in delivering the fastest software and security updates. Further, the company highlighted that Nokia phones were also ahead in build quality with HMD Global "applying tougher tests than the industry average."

Lenovo, LG and Vivo Deliver Slow Android Updates

According to Counterpoint Research, Nokia delivered Android 10 operating system (OS) updates to 20 of its devices sold between 2019 third quarter to the 2020 second quarter. OnePlus is said to have taken the second spot on the Counterpoint Research charts with the company delivering Android 10 OS updates to seven of its devices solid in the same time period.

"With smartphones being devices that are always-on and connected, they are more vulnerable to cyberattacks which are growing both in frequency and severity,” Peter Richardson, research director at Counterpoint Research, said in the release. “This makes software and security updates for Android smartphones an critical aspect."

Samsung and Realme is said to have delivered Android 10 updates to 89% and 73% of its devices sold between third quarter of 2019 to second quarter of 2020. Further, Xiaomi and Huawei is said to have provided Android 10 OS updates to 68% of its devices each in the same time period.

"98% of Android smartphone brands still offer inconsistent software and security updates or none at all," Richardson said. "OnePlus also did well by providing faster software updates to all its devices currently selling in the market followed by Samsung and realme."

Oppo, Lenovo, LG and Vivo said to have delivered Android 10 OS updates to 50%, 36%, 25% and 24% respectively of its devices sold between 2019 third quarter to 2020 second quarter.

Samsung, LG and Oppo Slow in Rolling Out Monthly Security Patch

Counterpoint Research also said that Nokia phones sold between 2019 third quarter and 2020 second quarter all received monthly security patches. Further, it was said that 90% of the devices sold by OnePlus in the same time period had received timely monthly security patch.

"Regular software and security updates helps not just the overall device experience, but also helps devices retain their value over time," Ritest Bendre, global content manager at Counterpoint Research, said in the release. "Surprisingly, there are top 10 smartphone manufacturers that don't have any clear strategy to inform customers whether their devices are eligible for security and software updates."

Crucially, Samsung is said to have rolled out monthly security patches to 22% of its devices sold between third quarter of 2019 and second quarter of 2020. Further, LG and Oppo is said to have rolled out monthly security patches to 18% and 16% of its devices respectively.

"We think this issue will become increasingly important as consumers keep their smartphones for longer and rely on them more," Bendre said. "Nokia and OnePlus devices have done well here."

Telecom Operators Request Trai Chief for Setting a Floor for Data Tariffs

The telecom operators have requested the regulator for fastening the process of setting up floor data tariffs and also look into its decision of not regulating communication apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp. In a meeting with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) new chief, PD Vaghela, the telecom operators have urged him to avail the valuable E & V airwaves for the auction. For the unaware, these particular airwaves are essential for the telecom operators in providing 5G services. More on the story ahead.

Debt Laden Telcos Urge the Regulator to Set Floor for Data Tariffs

As per an Economic Times report, after the AGR verdict was out, the telecom operators had requested Trai to set a floor for data tariffs along with other relief measures so that some pressure can be eased off from them.

"We have pointed out to the new chairman that Trai's recommendations on setting a floor for data tariffs are pending for several months, and he has assured the industry he will examine the matter closely," SP Kochhar, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) told the paper.

The new Trai chief, PD Vaghela will have to solve this issue in a way which doesn't affect either the telcos or the consumers in a negative manner. The operators have also requested Vaghela to look into Trai's decision of not regulating over-the-top (OTT) apps such as Google, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Last month, on the same matter, Trai had expressed that there is no need for it to intervene with the privacy and security related to OTT services as of now. But the regulator ensured that it will tap all the market developments of the OTT platforms and in case there is a need to intervene in the future, it will do so unhesitatingly.

COAI tends to believe that Trai's move of ignoring the OTT players is directly undermining national security. It further said that the telcos remain to be under strict regulatory and licensing rules whereas the OTT platforms have much more independence to operate putting the operators in a disadvantageous position.

Airtel Voice Over WiFi (VoWiFi) calling is now available on over 200 devices in India. Airtel launched the service so that users can get excellent coverage when they are indoors and their smartphone can't get a strong network. However, when the service was initially launched, the operator enabled it on select smartphones available in the market and restricted it to users on Xstream Fiber connection. But as time went by, manufacturers started equipping their devices with the appropriate technology so that it could support VoWiFi calling while Airtel also expanded the feature to more devices. Now, over 200 smartphone models in the country can support VoWiFi calling. More details ahead.

Airtel VoWiFi Can Be Supported by Over 200 Devices Now

The smartphones from different companies now supporting Airtel's VoWiFi calling include Apple smartphones right from the iPhone 6s and above. Further, the operator has also enabled the VoWiFi calling on devices from other brands such as OnePlus 6 devices and above including OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 8. Xiaomi devices including Redmi 8, 8A also support the Airtel VoWiFi feature.

Similarly, Samsung devices such as Galaxy S10, S20, Note 10 along with few other devices also get the support of Airtel VoWiFi. The operator also highlights that select devices from Oppo, Vivo, and Realme also get the support of the feature.

For the unaware, VoWiFi means Voice Over WiFi which is an alternative for VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). Whenever you are in a remote area where the network coverage of your mobile operator is weak, you can utilise VoWiFi calling for superior call quality given you have a strong WiFi connection.

The users can make calls to any part of India with the help of VoWiFi calling and the best part is that it works on any type of Wi-Fi connection. Additionally, there is no specific app required to use this feature.

How to Enable Airtel VoWiFi Calling on Your Device?

For enabling VoWiFi calling, you need to first ensure that you are using a smartphone which can support it. After that see if you are using the latest Airtel 4G SIM card or not. If you are using a 3G or 2G SIM card, then upgrade to a 4G one right away.

Then ensure that the operating system of your device is updated and is running on the latest version. For getting the best experience while making phone calls, enable both the 'VoLTE' and 'Wi-Fi Calling' switch. Further, Airtel users can also go to the website of Airtel to check if their device is compatible with VoWiFi calling.
