Reliance Jio, the largest telecom operator in India in September unveiled its 'JioPostPaid Plus' plans with the entry tier plan carrying a price tag of Rs 399 per month. While Vi had long offered an Rs 399 postpaid plan, Bharti Airtel has now joined the fray with all the three telecom operators offering an entry-level postpaid plan at Rs 399 per month. TelecomTalk has already compared these plans and concluded that Jio offers more value with its base postpaid plan than any other telecom operator. But the question remains, is Rs 399 postpaid plan an ideal entry plan for the users?

Is Rs 399 Postpaid an Ideal Entry Plan?

First of all, it is worth noting that Airtel is offering its Rs 399 postpaid plan to the customers across India now. Earlier the telecom operator had limited the plan to select telecom circles across India but with Reliance Jio introducing a Rs 399 postpaid plan, Airtel has expanded its Rs 399 plan.

Airtel users subscribed to the Rs 399 postpaid plan will receive 40GB data and unlimited calling and few OTT benefits such as Airtel Xstream Premium along with Shaw Academy and more.
Further, Reliance Jio with its Rs 399 JioPostPaid Plus plan provides 75GB of data along with data rollover facility of 200GB. There is also unlimited voice calling included on JioPostPaid Plus plan along with a complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps.

Then talking about the benefits of the postpaid plan which Vi offers, the users get 40GB of data along with 150GB additional data with a validity of up to 6 months. There is also unlimited voice calling included. But there are no OTT benefits with this plan.

So the question arises, are these benefits enough?

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), 95.35% of the wireless subscribers in India for the period ending March 31, 2020, were on a prepaid plan. With that said, are the current Rs 399 postpaid plans enough to convince a user to make the switch from prepaid?

Some might believe that the ideal entry plan with these benefits should be priced a little lower than Rs 399 by either of these telcos. Adding to that, there should be more OTT benefits of major platforms such as ZEE5, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video added to the entry-level postpaid plans as well.

What kind of benefits would you want with an ideal entry-level postpaid plan and what should its price be?

‘Make in India’ Initiative by Government to Increase the Prices of Smartphones

The Indian government has put a 10% customs duty on multiple parts of smartphones which are imported to the country from October 1, 2020. This is likely to result in increased prices of smartphones. 'Make in India' initiative is in full flow for the past few months with major companies such as Apple shifting its production of iPhones to India. DTH operators such as Tata Sky and Dish TV are also shifting the manufacturing of Set-Top Boxes to India. However, the customs duty applied to the imported parts is going to increase the cost of production for the companies. Hence for the smartphone industry especially, the users might see increased rates of devices. More on the story ahead.

Custom Duty on Parts of Smartphones Will Result in Higher Prices

As per an ET Telecom report, LG is continuing with the manufacturing of its smartphones in India despite the 10% customs duty on the smartphone parts to be imported into the country. The Korean giant supports the 'Make in India' initiative of the government.

The increased cost of production could result in an increase in the prices of smartphones. The display assembly, touch panel/cover glass assembly are all set to become expensive for a company to acquire.

The industry had earlier requested the government to not levy this tax on the parts for at least one year. The reason behind the request made by the industry was that these parts aren't manufactured locally yet. So the companies don't have any other option but to import it from outside the country.

One solution to this problem would be to equip local manufacturers and vendors with the appropriate knowledge and technology. This would help them manufacture imported parts locally.

However, there is nothing confirmed about the prices yet. LG has made no official comments on whether this would increase the prices of smartphones. Only time will tell how much price will increase for smartphones. The components affected by the tax comprise 25% of the bill for a device. So there is a strong possibility of this affecting the price of the devices, but as mentioned, nothing's confirmed yet.

jio-airtel-vi-rs399-postpaid-comparison

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India recently started offering its Rs 399 postpaid plan to its users across India. The telecom operator had earlier limited the plan and its benefits to select telecom circles in India. With Jio introducing its postpaid plan of Rs 399, Airtel had to reintroduce its Rs 399 plan to its users across India. Vi also offers a postpaid plan which costs Rs 399 per month. So now, all these three telecom operators offer a Rs 399 postpaid plan. But which one is the better option in terms of value? Let's take a look.

Jio Rs 399 Postpaid Plan

Jio introduced its Rs 399 postpaid plan in September under its 'JioPostPaid Plus' branding. It offers its users 75GB free data after which the operator charges Rs 10 per GB. There is also a data rollover facility of up to 200GB. But there are no family benefits with this plan. Both SMS and calling is unlimited with this plan and the users also get a complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps. The postpaid plan from Jio comes with OTT subscriptions of Netflix Mobile worth Rs 199, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, Amazon Prime and also Jio’s own OTT apps.

Vi Rs 399 Postpaid Plan

Vi also offers a Rs 399 postpaid plan to its users. With this plan, the users get 40GB of data and 150GB of additional data for 6 months. Along with this, there is unlimited voice calling and SMS included. However, Vi does not OTT benefits nor family benefits with its Rs 399 plan to its users.

Airtel Rs 399 Postpaid Plan

Meanwhile, Airtel has now started to expand its Rs 399 postpaid plan to its users across India. The users get 40GB of data with unlimited calling and 100 SMS per day. With that, Airtel also bundles Airtel Xstream Premium subscription for one year along with Wynk Music, Shaw Academy. Further, the users subscribed to the Rs 399 plans also receive free HelloTunes and Rs 150 cashback on FASTag.

Verdict

It is clear that there is more data offered with Jio's Rs 399 postpaid plan. In terms of OTT benefits, both Jio and Airtel are almost similar but Vi doesn't provide any OTT benefit with its Rs 399 plan. There is unlimited calling and SMS included with each of the plans. So overall, Jio is a notch ahead of Airtel and Vi in providing the best Rs 399 postpaid plan.
