The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved Google’s investment of $4.5 billion (Rs 33,737 crore) in Jio Platforms. Announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries a couple of months ago, the deal will see Jio Platforms and Google working together in various initiatives. While announcing the deal, both the parties said they would work in developing low-cost Android smartphones aimed at the Indian market. It is also rumoured that both Jio Platforms and Google are waiting for CCI nod to launch the first set of Android phones in the market. The CCI has officially confirmed the approval of this deal on Twitter earlier today. Low-Cost Android Smartphones by Jio Might Launch SoonThe CCI nod for the deal means we could see Reliance Jio launching cheap Android smartphones with 4G support and customised version of Android very soon. ET Telecom earlier reported that the CCI is closely reviewing the data-sharing agreement between Jio Platforms and Google as part of this massive deal. Reliance Jio was earlier rumoured to launch the phones in December and that seems to be on track. Jio Platforms is looking to launch at least 200 million smartphones in the next three years, reports TechCrunch. The publication also says the low-cost Android phones from Jio Platforms will have its own App Store with very limited applications available to the users. This is in-line with what the company is doing with JioPhones. Last year in October, we reported that Reliance Jio sold a staggering 70 million JioPhones till date and the number will be even higher now. Jio Platforms has managed to attract massive investments from global companies like Facebook, Qualcomm Ventures, Jaadhu Holdings, KKR and more. The Facebook-Jio Platforms deal also received CCI approval recently. Jio Platforms raised over $20 billion this year from 13 investors. In other news, the CCI has announced an in-depth investigation into Google and its payments service Google Pay. According to CCI, Google is taking advantage of its authority over Android in promoting Google Pay. The search giant is yet to reply to CCI. | Vodafone Idea and Airtel Seek Clarity on AGR Dues Calculation Methods from DoT Posted: 10 Nov 2020 09:17 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-vi-clarity-agr-dues-calculation/309893/, Vodafone Idea and Airtel Seek Clarity on AGR Dues Calculation Methods from DoT
Telecom operators Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel reportedly reached out the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) for clarity on how the AGR dues are calculated. The Supreme Court, on September 1, asked telcos to pay the AGR dues within ten years. And the apex court considered the final amounts submitted by DoT. Since the very beginning of the AGR case, Airtel and Vi are opposing the calculations of DoT saying that their self-assessed AGR dues are on the lower side. For the unaware, Airtel is asked to pay Rs 44,000 crore whereas Vi should pay Rs 58,400 crore in the next ten years. According to ET Telecom, the DoT has rejected the latest request from both the telcos saying there’s no need for ‘further clarifications’ as the Supreme Court already approved the calculations made by DoT. Dispute Between Telcos and DoT Over 1st InstalmentThe latest dispute between the two telcos and DoT is over the next instalment. According to the Supreme Court’s order, Vi needs to pay around Rs 50,400 crore and Airtel needs to pay Rs 25,976 crore over ten instalments till March 31, 2031. As we all know, Bharti Airtel paid Rs 18,004 crore as AGR dues and Vi paid Rs 7,854 crore till now. The report says, Airtel and Vi urge that they have already paid the 10% dues (first instalment) which is due on March 31, 2021, and they will directly move to the second instalment or the next 10% due payment for which the deadline is March 31, 2022. But DoT says the telcos are required to pay their next 10% dues by March 31, 2021. “Vodafone Idea and Airtel have informed the DoT that they need to know the AGR dues and asked the government to explain the method used to arrive at the due amount. So far, there has been no response from the government,” said a senior industry executive aware of the development to ET Telecom. DoT will likely address this issue by the end of this quarter. It is also said that DoT may reach out Supreme Court with a status update on how much it recovered from both the telcos. | Bharti Airtel Adds More Subscribers Than Jio in August 2020: Trai Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:57 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-jio-trai-august-2020-subscribers/309781/, Bharti Airtel Adds More Subscribers Than Jio in August 2020: Trai
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today released “Telecom Subscription Data” for August 2020. As per the information available, Bharti Airtel has added more subscribers than Reliance Jio for the first time in more than four years. Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has been leading the subscriber addition chart ever since its inception. Trai says Airtel added 2.8 million new users in August 2020, whereas Jio managed to grab just 1.8 million subscribers. At the end of August 2020, Jio had a market share of 35.08%, followed by Airtel at 28.12% and Vodafone Idea at 26.15%. Bharti Airtel Beats Jio for the First Time in 4 YearsReliance Jio launched its commercial services back in September 2016. Since then, the company has amassed more than 400 million users. We have seen Jio adding an average of eight million subscribers almost every month in recent times. The trend has come down drastically as Jio managed to add just 1.8 million new users in August 2020. Airtel’ subscriber base increased by 2.8 million which does come as a surprise to many considering Jio is still offering the best tariff plans for prepaid users. The story of Vodafone Idea remains the same as the telco lost 1.2 million users in August 2020. BSNL managed to add 2.2 lakh new users during the same month. As on August 31, 2020, the private access service providers held 89.35% market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 10.65%. Trai also stated the number of active wireless subscribers in August 2020 was 957.43 million. The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,164 million at the end of July 2020 to 1,167.81 million at the end of August 2020, with a monthly growth rate of 0.33%. The report further added that 7.53 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 504.57 million at the end of July 2020 to 512.10 million at the end of August 2020, since the implementation of MNP. | Amazon Prime Video Bags Exclusive Rights for Streaming New Zealand Matches in India Posted: 09 Nov 2020 11:45 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/amazon-prime-video-rights-streaming-new-zealand-india/309694/, Amazon Prime Video Bags Exclusive Rights for Streaming New Zealand Matches in India
Amazon Prime Video, the second-largest over-the-top (OTT) content platform in the country has bagged the exclusive rights for streaming New Zealand cricket matches in India. The OTT giant has joined hands with the New Zealand Cricket Board to stream all the cricket matches until 2025-26 period. It is worth noting that this is the first time Amazon Prime Video is going to stream any kind of live sport for its viewers. Adding to this, the OTT content platform has become the first Indian streaming service to get such an exclusive right from a major international cricket board. More details on the story ahead. Amazon Prime Video To Stream all International Matches of New ZealandAmazon Prime Video is going to stream all the matches that are going to be played by New Zealand for the next 6 years in India. It will cover both men's and women's ODIs, T20Is, and Test matches starting in late 2021. This would also cover the India tour of New Zealand scheduled in early 2022 and another tour for which the dates aren't announced yet. But Amazon Prime Video isn't the first OTT platform to stream live international cricket in India though. Disney+ Hotstar and Sony Liv both have rights to stream international cricket from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stream live cricket matches of team India. Amazon Prime Video starting to stream live cricket might break the duopoly that Star and Sony share in India. Gaurav Gandhi, Director and Country General Manager, Amazon Prime Video said, "We are thrilled to work with New Zealand Cricket on this endeavour as they have a strong, passionate and much-loved cricket team, and the cricketing rivalry between the two countries has been fantastic. We are happy to make this collaboration with New Zealand Cricket our first live sport offering in India, and are confident that our Prime members will be delighted with this initiative." Even though Amazon Prime Video hasn't bagged a streaming rights deal with the BCCI yet, that doesn't mean the Prime members won't show up for watching New Zealand matches. India is a cricket-loving nation and be it India's or New Zealand's matches; people will turn up for watching live cricket. Thus this deal is certainly going to place Amazon Prime Video in a better position in the country. | Apple’s ‘One More Thing’ Event to Take Place Today, What to Expect? Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:45 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/apples-one-more-thing-event-place-today/309671/, Apple's 'One More Thing' Event to Take Place Today, What to Expect?
Apple's 'One More Thing' event is scheduled to take place today. As per the Indian Standard Time (IST), the event will start from 11:30 PM. While Apple hasn't revealed any hints on what the event is about, there are a few assumptions which can be made that may prove right. Back in June, in the WWDC 2020 event, Apple announced the silicon chip-based Macs. Along with the new Macs, Apple also announced the new macOS Big Sur. Since Apple didn't mention about either of these in the last two events it conducted in September and October, it is highly likely that today's event is about the new Macs and macOS Big Sur. More on the story ahead. Apple's 'One More Thing' Event Might Cover More than MacsApart from the silicon-based Macs and the macOS Big Sur, there are multiple other products Apple can launch in today's event. The Cupertino tech giant has been rumoured to be developing over-the-ear headphones. These new headphones might come with swappable headbands and ear pads, built-in touch controls, Siri controls, and noise cancellation. But as per a Bloomberg report, the headphones couldn't go into production because the headbands were too tight. Thus the headphones might not come with swappable headbands after all. Another exciting product that has been rumoured from Apple for quite a while is the tile-like trackers. These tile-like trackers are expected to be named AirTags. The AirTags are small circular discs which users could keep in their bags and track them using Apple's Find My app. macOS Big Sur Release Date and New Silicon Chipset MacsThe macOS Big Sur announced back in WWDC 2020 event might also get a release date in today's event. The features and first looks of the new macOS were already released in the WWDC 2020 event, the only thing left was the official stable rollout date for the Mac users. As for the new Macs with silicon chipsets, even if Apple does announce them today, they might not arrive until Q2, 2021, as per a report from Nikkei Asia.
