BSNL Can’t Commit Any Timeline for 4G Launch: Report

Over the last few months, we have seen BSNL Employee Unions blaming the government for not allowing it to launch the 4G services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is now said to take a final decision on the launch of 4G services by BSNL, according to ET Telecom. However, a senior BSNL official told the publication that the telco can’t commit any timeline for rolling out the 4G services. BSNL is eagerly waiting for the DoT’s final decision so that it can start working on bringing 4G services to its subscribers across 20 circles. Recently, it was reported that BSNL would become a pan-India operator in early 2021 by rolling out services in Mumbai and Delhi circles.

BSNL Employee Unions Blaming Government for Delaying 4G Launch

“We can’t commit any timeline for the 4G launch. It is for the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to take a final call in this matter,” a senior official from BSNL said to ET Telecom. Last year, the government stated it is offering a revival package to BSNL and MTNL. As part of this package itself, BSNL was supposed to launch 4G services.

On March 23, BSNL released the first draft for procuring 4G equipment, however, that was scrapped due to differences with the DoT. Earlier this month, BSNL wrote to the government that the delay in 4G rollout and non-procurement of 2G equipment would impact revenues badly.

BSNL employee unions also urged that the company’s 4G services will be a “potential threat to Mukesh Ambani's overzealous ambition of monopolising the entire telecom sector.”

The DoT had asked the telco to cut investments on 2G networks, however, BSNL says that 60% of its customer base is still on 2G network."There were some unrealistic expectations by the panel that included discouraging 2G investments and time-bound Proof of Concept (PoC) which we have opposed," added the report further.

BSNL customers across the country are hoping the telco to bring 4G services at the earliest.

JioPhone to Soon Receive a Price Hike of Rs 300, Will Retail for Rs 999

Reliance Jio to soon increase the price of original JioPhone by Rs 300 which will take its retail price to Rs 999. A 91mobiles report citing sources as offline retailers says the telco is all set to hike the price of JioPhone. To recall, Jio introduced the Rs 699 JioPhone offer during Diwali 2019 and the same offer is available till now. While launching the offer last year, Jio stated it would be a ‘limited period’ deal. Probably due to the decreased demand, Jio may have retained the offer for more than a year. Alongside increasing the price of the phone, Jio is also said to make the Rs 125 recharge mandatory while purchasing the phone. This will take the overall price of the phone to Rs 1,124. The company might make an official announcement regarding this news in the coming days.

JioPhone to Cost More Very Soon: Everything You Need to Know

When Jio introduced the ‘Diwali 2019‘ offer on JioPhone, everyone was impressed with the price to value ratio offered by the feature phone. Yes, it is a feature phone, but it runs on Jio’s 4G LTE network which made it more enticing. And the best part of this offer was the removal of Rs 1,500 security deposit. All the users have to pay were Rs 699 for JioPhone and Rs 99 or above for the tariff plan. And the company also said it would return up to Rs 299 back to the customer subject if he/she returns the phone to Jio in three years.

On top of that, Jio offered Rs 99 worth of additional data pack to every user who bought the phone under Diwali 2019 offer. However, customers are required to make a monthly recharge to avail the free Rs 99 data pack benefit. Overall, Jio offered benefits worth Rs 1,500 (around Rs 700 for the free data packs+Rs 800 discount on the JioPhone) to the users.

Now that Jio is looking to hike the price to Rs 999, we are not sure whether it will retain the additional data pack offer on the first seven recharges. And if the company makes Rs 125 as a mandatory first recharge for JioPhone users, it will likely see a decrease for the 4G feature phone.

Chinese Vendors Might be Banned from Supplying Critical Telecom Equipment in India

chinese-banned-telecom-equipment

Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE might not have a bright future in the telecom industry of India. The Indian government might amend the license conditions so that telcos in the country can't take any critical telecom equipment from a Chinese vendor. If this were to happen, Huawei and ZTE would have no impact or contribution on the 5G trials and deployments in India. Would this mean that apart from the critical equipment, the telcos could source other kinds of equipment from the Chinese vendors to keep costs low? More details on the story ahead.

Government Might Ban Chinese Telecom Vendors Supplying Critical Telecom Equipment in the Country

As per a report from ET Telecom, a discussion between several ministries, security agencies, and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is going on for deciding whether every equipment of different nature or only critical equipment from the Chinese vendors should be banned.

An answer to this question must be out soon because telecom operators need clarity before the spectrum auctions are held in the first quarter of 2021. As per one of the officials related to the matter, it would hard to determine what would be 'critical' equipment and what would be not.

This is because, with 2G and 3G, the differences could be clearly made between the technology used. Still, with 5G, it is particularly hard because of the increasing convergence between new technologies.

If the Chinese vendors were phased out of India, it would increase the cost for procuring telecom equipment for the private operators of the country. Thus, there needs to be a discussion between the government and the telecom operators of India to decide how many years should this process be stretched to.

The centre has already directed both Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) not to source any equipment of Huawei or ZTE for providing telecom services. But this order could be soon rolled out for private telecom operators in the country as well.

Google Chrome Gets Faster and Smarter With the Last Update of 2020

google-chrome-gets-faster-smarter

Google Chrome is one of the most widely used internet browsers in the world. Matt Waddell, Director of Product, Chrome, said in a blog that the browser has got the largest gain in performance it has ever got in years with the new update. This has been possible due to the multiple under-the-hood improvements made by Google on the app. Now users can directly take actions from the address bar and find the recently visited websites and pages on the new tabs for faster navigation — more details ahead.

Google Chrome to Offer More Battery Life and Load Faster

Google Chrome will now focus more on active tabs rather than every tab that is open. This would reduce the CPU usage by up to 5 times and would further result in longer battery life by up to 1.25 hours. Adding to this, Chrome will now fire-up 25% faster than before and the page loading speed has been improved by 7%. What's interesting to note here is that all this faster performance would require even lesser power and RAM of your device than ever.

Also, Google Chrome on Android will now load pages faster than ever when you quickly move forward and backwards. One thing that a lot of users need with Google Chrome is the convenience of tabs. These tabs allow them to organise their stuff online. Right from the articles that need to be read, to-do lists and much more are stored in different tabs. You can send tabs to other devices as well.

Now Google Chrome will come with a function to help you search tabs. There is a 'tab search' option being added to the toolbox which will help you find tabs in a jiffy. However, it will be first introduced on the Chromebooks and then later to other desktops as well.

Users can now directly take action from the address bar. For example, if the user types 'delete history' or 'edit passwords', he/she will be allowed to directly take action from the address bar. This would make it convenient for the people to find these options directly from the address bar instead of searching them through various menus of the app.

Reliance Jio Asks Trai to Hold Periodic Spectrum Auctions

Posted: 17 Nov 2020 09:16 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-periodic-spectrum-auctions/311563/, Reliance Jio Asks Trai to Hold Periodic Spectrum Auctions

India’s largest telecom operator Reliance Jio has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to hold periodic spectrum auctions. The Mukesh Ambani-owned telco says periodic auctions will help telcos meet their network requirements and also removes the hassle of waiting for radiowaves to upgrade the network infrastructure. This is the second time in the last two months we saw Reliance Jio approaching government bodies regarding the lack of frequent spectrum auctions. To recall, Jio had written to DoT in September that it should bring back the policy of annual spectrum auctions.

Jio Urges Trai to Hold Regular Spectrum Auctions

Replying via comments to Trai’s recent consultation paper on ‘Roadmap to Promote Broadband Connectivity and Enhanced Broadband Speed‘ published on August 20, Jio urged that the four-year gap in spectrum auction by the government is ‘inexplicable.’ The telco also highlighted that a “huge amount of spectrum remains unutilised and unproductive.” This news is first published by PTI.

In September this year, Reliance Jio approached Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash seeking clarity on why DoT decided to pause the policy which ensures yearly spectrum auctions. In its letter to the Telecom Secretary, Jio said that timely spectrum auctions are required to meet the data demand.

“We submit that mobile broadband is now ubiquitous, however, the exponential growth of demand has now started to impact broadband speeds. The only way to avoid this and ensure that the mobile broadband speeds are comparable to equally large or comparable economies is by putting more spectrum in the hands of the operators,” replied Jio as a comment on the consultation paper from Trai published on August 20.

Reliance Jio has been actively pushing for spectrum auction to procure 5G airwaves. But on the flip side, Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are actively looking for the postponement of the spectrum auction considering their financial health at the moment. The next spectrum auction could take place between January-March 2021, but nothing is confirmed for now from the house of Trai.

Poco M3 Official Launch Set for November 24, Could Be a Rebranded Redmi Note 10 4G

Poco Global officially announced the launch of Poco M3 for November 24. The company announced this news on Twitter teasing it could be its most affordable smartphone yet. As we all know, Poco is acting as an independent brand in India, whereas in global markets, it is still a sub-brand Xiaomi. Also, the Indian unit of Poco operates differently compared to the global unit. For example, Poco’s global unit is teasing the Poco M3 as its most affordable phone yet, but in India, we have the Poco C3 at Rs 7,999 (approx. $110). The Poco M3 may not launch in India this year, but we are expecting to launch the country sometime early next year as a successor the Poco M2 Pro. It is also said the Poco M3 will just be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 10 4G that’s going to launch in China later this month.

Poco M3: What We Know So Far

It has been close to three months since the launch of Poco X3 NFC. So there’s no doubt that a new phone from Poco is on the radar. The Poco M3 is arriving on November 24, as officially confirmed by the company. Whenever Poco announces that it is planning to launch a new smartphone, the one thing that strikes in our mind is: will it be a rebranded Redmi phone? The answer for the major part was Yes.

And it seems like the same scenario will continue with the Poco M3. Redmi is preparing to launch the Redmi Note 10 4G in China later this month alongside the Redmi Note 9 5G series. Several certification websites indicated that the Poco M3 could be a rebranded Redmi Note 10 4G for global markets. Both the phones were spotted with the same model number- M2010J19SC.

Since the Redmi Note 10 4G already appeared on TENAA and Geekbench, we have the complete specifications of the smartphone. The Poco M3 will sport a 6.53-inch Full HD+ display with a teardrop notch on top. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The TENAA listing says the Note 10 4G will have a 48MP primary camera on the rear side and it will be backed by a 6000mAh battery.
