Nokia, Elisa and Qualcomm Achieve World’s Fastest 5G Speeds of 8 Gbps

Qualcomm Technologies, Nokia and telecom operator Elisa today announced that they have achieved 8 Gbps speeds on a commercial 5G network in Finland. It is the first time we are seeing 8 Gbps speeds on a 5G network with two 5G mmWave devices connected simultaneously. The three vendors conducted this test at Elisa’s store in Helsinki, Finland. Qualcomm Technologies said that new network would support a range of new low-latency, high-bandwidth services, such as high-speed video downloads, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. The service is expected to be implemented in 2021 in Finland.

How Nokia, Elisa and Qualcomm Achieved 8 Gbps Speeds on 5G Network

In a press statement, Qualcomm Technologies said the milestone was achieved by using Nokia’s 5G mmWave technology and Qualcomm’s own 5G smartphone test device over Elisa’s commercial 5G network. These are the world’s fastest 5G speeds recording till date. Such speeds will enable opportunities in various sectors like VR/AR, latency-sensitive enterprise services and more. Customers will be able to download 4K video content or massive games in a matter of seconds. “The move supports Elisa's pioneering efforts to digitise Finnish society as a global leader in 5G services,” the release added.

Furthermore, Qualcomm says the base station utilised two Nokia AirScale radios, each using 800 MHz of commercial millimetre wave 5G spectrum at 26 GHz. These provided connectivity to two 5G smartphone form factor test devices powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System featuring second-generation Qualcomm QTM525 mmWave antenna modules, with each device reaching 4 Gbps peak speeds from the base station.

Telecom operator Elisa says reaching 8 Gbps on a 5G network is a natural step, but it wants to explore the possibilities offered by 5G. The fastest 5G speed recorded so far was 4.7 Gbps by Nokia in Finland itself. So the same company working with Qualcomm and Elisa delivered the fastest 5G network speeds of 8 Gbps ever.

We reported a couple of days back that Bharti Airtel hosted an O-RAN Alliance plugfest in India. STL and ASOCS, two of the members of the Alliance, showcased the mobility load balancing with near real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). Along with this, they also demonstrated the O-RAN E2 interface testing of RIC. Bharti Airtel had hosted the Indian edition of O-RAN Alliance Plugfest to show the world the growing maturity of O-RAN Solutions. Keep reading ahead to find out more details about the story.

STL & ASOCS Take the Floor in the O-RAN Alliance Plugfest Hosted by Airtel

Open source radio networks (O-RANs) are going to be very crucial in supporting a heavy load of network demand in the future. Users today seek for their wireless networks to support scale, agility, and latency regardless of the kind of connection they have. Thus for 4G and 5G to be able to support and balance a high amount of load in the network with centralised controls, an excellent O-RAN technology is required.

In the Plugfest hosted by Bharti Airtel, STL & ASOCS took the floor and demonstrated RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) interworking with Open-eNodeB (O-eNB). Mobile Load Balancing (MLB) and E2 Setup along with subscriptions according to the O-RAN standards were included in the demonstration. As per the demonstration, the network traffic is significantly improved when MLB is handled from the edge of the network through RIC in an O-RAN based network platform.

Rajesh Gangadhar, CTO, Access Solutions, STL, said, "This is an incredible feat in establishing RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) platform on a fully virtualised 4G/5G stack with ASOCS." He further said that with the demos, it is clear that the 4G/5G networks can be deployed with open and disaggregated RAN.

Gilad Garon, CEO of ASOCS, said, "We are proud of this achievement made possible by our close and intensive work with our strategic partner – STL." He further noted that this Plugfest held by Bharti Airtel would help to contribute to 'Make in India' initiative for the 4G networks and then in the future with 5G as well.

indian-telecom-market-structurally-very-good-atc
The Indian telecom market is “looking structurally very good," Rod Smith, executive vice president and chief financial officer of American Tower Corporation (ATC) said in the NAREIT REITworld 2020 annual virtual conference. The Boston based ATC is said to own and operate 74,569 tower sites in India as of September 30, 2020. The company in its financial data for the period ended September 30, highlighted that India accounted for 15.4% of its total property revenue during its third quarter. Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Reliance Jio are said to be major telecom operators to be engaged with ATC in India.

ATC "On Track" to "Recover" Commercially in India

Smith in the NAREIT REITworld 2020 annual virtual conference on Wednesday said that ATC is "on track" to "recover" commercially in India.

"But the Indian market really is looking structurally very good, has three commercial carriers, one government backed carrier, and we do see double digit gross growth there," Smith said in the NAREIT REITworld 2020 annual virtual conference.

However, Smith highlighted that the ATC's international markets "grow a couple of hundred basis points faster" than the company's home market, the United States of America.

"That’s primarily because their technologies are good five years behind us kind of on average, it differs in certain places, maybe even longer, in terms of behind us and in other places like India and parts of Africa," Smith said.

ATC Experienced Extra Growth in Indian Market

The executive vice president of ATC also highlighted that the company prior to the consolidation in the Indian telecom market experienced "extra growth" as compared to its US business.

"We are looking forward to a recovery in India in terms of continuing to see the churn rates come down following the consolidation that has happened in that market," Smith said.

Crucially, Smith also said that the COVID pandemic did "affect" its "build program" with the company witnessing slowdown in several countries including India due to lockdown restrictions. However, Smith highlighted that ATC still expects to build over 5000 new sites with a "lot of those in India."

In its third quarter earnings call for the period ended September 30, 2020, Smith said that ATC is set to build 3500 new tower sites in India by the end of 2020.

Amazon Alexa Gets Hindi Language Support for Fire TV Devices in India

amazon-alexa-gets-hindi-language

Amazon Alexa is recognised as one of the best virtual assistants in the world. Now, for the Fire TV device users in India, Alexa will be able to understand commands in Hindi. Amazon has recently announced that the Amazon Alexa for all the Fire TV devices in India will get the support for the Hindi language with the new update. Until now, the Fire TV devices in India could only understand commands in English. But now with the added support of Hindi, users can give commands in either of the languages as per their preference. More details on the story ahead.

Amazon Alexa of Fire TV Devices in India Get Hindi Language Support

Amazon Alexa in all the Fire TV devices in India will now support the Hindi language after the new update. In addition to the language support, Amazon also added the Alexa Routines to the Fire TV devices. It allows users to communicate through several Alexa devices kept across the home and execute multiple commands.

As per Amazon, Alexa in Fire TV devices can now be used to search songs, personalities, set timers and alarms, ask for news and weather all in Hindi. But one thing that users should note is that only commands are understood by Alexa in Hindi. But it won’t respond in Hindi.

This is strange since the Hindi language support in Amazon Echo devices not only take commands in Hindi but also communicate in Hindi with the users. However, future updates to the Fire TV devices should seek to provide users with this facility as well.

After the update, the users can switch their Alexa to understand commands in Hindi. For doing so go to Settings > Preferences > Language. At the same time, new users will get an additional option for setting their device in Hindi now.

Amazon also introduced the Hindi language support for Alexa in Android and iOS devices back in September 2020. With Echo devices also supporting the Hindi language, the whole ecosystem of Alexa in India now understands Hindi.

Also, with the help of Alexa Routines, users can now give smarter commands to the voice assistant. Such as when you get up from your seat while watching a movie, you can tell Alexa, 'I am getting up', and she will pause the movie for you.

vivo-originos-replace-funtouchos

Vivo has finally announced its new operating system (OS) called OriginOS. The Chinese smartphone maker currently rolls out its devices with the FuntouchOS. But the OriginOS is here to replace it. There are multiple changes made to the user interface (UI) of the new OS. The home screen of the OriginOS uses square and rectangular widgets which Vivo calls Klotski grid. The new OS comes with enhanced animations, a new notifications system, sound, and other things. Even though Vivo has announced the new OS officially, the company is yet to clear the timeline for its release globally. More on the story ahead.

Vivo OriginOS Features

As per the announcement of Vivo, the OriginOS will come with new and better navigation gestures. How the gestures will work, that hasn't been cleared by the company yet. But one thing which the company has communicated is that the new OriginOS will come with a combination of 26 different gestures.

In the new features added on the OS, Vivo has said that the users will get to see something called 'super card pack'. This card pack can be accessed by a single swipe up on the screen regardless of it being active or not.

Where the performance is concerned, Vivo has said that the new OriginOS will come with the support of Multi-Turbo 5.0 tech which will allow the device to get features such as process optimisation, fusion, and application pre-loading. The RAM inside the device has also been optimised with the ROM through the help of algorithm optimisation to deliver a faster experience of using the smartphone.

What this new optimisation tech will do is utilise the idle ROM for RAM operations which will enhance the user experience by making the functions faster. Vivo has said that this feature will allow the users in multi-tasking without facing any lags.

Adding to this, with the OriginOS, the system resident process will also be optimised, which will reduce the memory usage up to 200MB for the device. Also, with the pre-loading technology in the new OS, the opening time of the apps is said to be cut by 40%.

Vodafone Idea Offers 56 Days Validity and 4GB Data With Rs 269 Prepaid Plan

Posted: 18 Nov 2020 09:42 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-56days-validity-plan/311787/, Vodafone Idea Offers 56 Days Validity and 4GB Data With Rs 269 Prepaid Plan

Vodafone Idea or Vi has the habit of providing long validity prepaid plans on a budget. Before the tariff hike in December 2019, Vodafone used to offer an 84 days validity plan for under Rs 300. Alongside that, the telco also has a 56 days validity plan for Rs 269 which is even available right now. Vi’s Rs 269 prepaid recharge comes with 4GB of data, unlimited voice calling and limited SMSes, but the highlight of the plan is 56 days validity. No other telecom operator in India right now has a long validity plan on a budget right now. Besides, Vi also has an entry-level Rs 95 plan which is a Service Validity Prepaid Pack with 56 days validity.

Vi Rs 269 Prepaid Plan: What It Offers?

When it comes to affordable plans, the majority of the prepaid customers either look out for Reliance Jio or BSNL. But the lesser-known fact is Vodafone Idea has the affordable prepaid plans with long validity. These plans are aimed at heavy voice calling users. Coming to the Rs 269 plan, it ships with unlimited local/national calls to all networks within India, 4GB of 2G/3G/4G data and 600 SMSes per month. The validity of the pack is 56 days.

In contrast, Airtel and Reliance Jio does not have any such prepaid plans under Rs 300. As noted, Vi also has the Rs 95 service validity pack that offers Rs 74 talk time, 200 MB data (200MB extra as a limited period app/website recharge offer) and rate cutter on voice calls made within India.

Overall, Vodafone Idea has two best plans under Rs 300 with 56 days validity. But as mentioned above, these plans are aimed at the users who make a lot of voice calls. Unlike Jio and BSNL, Vi is offering unlimited voice calling benefit without any daily or monthly FUP limit.

In other news, Vi is looking to raise tariffs again in the next 2-3 months. If the tariff hike doesn’t happen for Vi, the telco is said to face several financial issues. Vi might raise tariffs by up to 20-25%, but nothing is confirmed officially.

OnePlus Confirms the Nord N100 Features a 90Hz Display

Posted: 18 Nov 2020 08:19 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/oneplus-nord-n100-90hz-display/311777/, OnePlus Confirms the Nord N100 Features a 90Hz Display

OnePlus released a couple of budget-friendly smartphones recently in western markets and they are the Nord N10 5G and the Nord N100. The Nord N10 5G is one of the first phones to feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipset, whereas the Nord N100 is a rebranded Oppo A53 that was launched in India as well. When OnePlus launched the Nord N100, it stated the phone does not have 90Hz refresh rate screen, In an interesting turn of events, Android Authority reports that their OnePlus Nord N100 retail unit surprisingly has 90Hz refresh rate support. Immediately, the publication approached OnePlus for an official response. And guess what, OnePlus officially confirmed the Nord N100 has a 90Hz refresh rate screen and the refresh rate can be manually switched to 90Hz and 60Hz from the display settings of the phone.

OnePlus Nord N100 is a Budget Phone With 90Hz Screen

We are not sure why OnePlus did not confirm the 90Hz refresh rate presence on the Nord N100 at the launch last month. We all know that the Nord N100 is a rebranded Oppo A53 and the latter was launched in India for under Rs 15,000 with a 90Hz screen. With the Nord N100, OnePlus broke its promise of offering ‘Fluid Display’ on its smartphones. To recall, while launching the OnePlus 7T more than a year ago, OnePlus said all of its future phones would come with ‘Fluid Display’ or in simple words, it promised high refresh rate on all of its upcoming smartphones.

The Nord N10 5G features a 90Hz screen, however, that isn’t the case with the Nord N100, at least going by what OnePlus said while launching the phone.

When Android Authority approached OnePlus regarding this, it said “The N100 is equipped with a 90Hz display. Actual refresh rate depends on settings, applications used, and processing limitations.” OnePlus did not highlight the 90Hz refresh rate feature on the Nord N100 because of its hardware capabilities.

The Nord N100 arrived with a 6.52-inch HD+ IPS LCD screen, Snapdragon 460 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 5000mAh battery with 18W support, 13MP triple camera setup and an 8MP selfie snapper. Both the OnePlus Nord N10 and Nord N100 will not launch in India.
