| Airtel to Have Better Opportunity Than Jio in Grabbing Vodafone Idea Feature Phone Users: Analysts Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:51 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-better-opportunity-jio-feature-phone/307808/, Airtel to Have Better Opportunity Than Jio in Grabbing Vodafone Idea Feature Phone Users: Analysts
Bharti Airtel will be the frontrunner in grabbing Vodafone Idea’s feature phone users, according to analysts. Reliance Jio has been grabbing all the 2G feature phone users of Airtel and Vodafone Idea which is the prime reason behind the telco amassing 400 million subscribers in such a short period. With Reliance Jio and Google rumoured to bring the low-cost Android smartphone, it was expected that the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco would grab all the feature phone users of Vodafone Idea. However, analysts now believe that Airtel is ‘better placed’ than Jio, thanks to no additional investment required to join the network. Vi Likely to Have 56% Feature Phone UsersAccording to an ET Telecom report quoting Goldman Sachs, Vi’s feature phone users may not have to shell out extra cash on a 4G handset to migrate to Airtel. At the same time, users are required to spend a little to switch to Reliance Jio’s LTE-only network. Analysts also expect that 56% of Vi’ total subscriber base are still using feature phones. "Vi has been losing customers in the feature phone segment, and Airtel is better placed than Jio to grab incremental market share as Vi's 2G customers can migrate to Bharti at no additional investment," Goldman Sachs said in its report. Both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are said to launch affordable 4G handsets in the last quarter of 2020 to grab market share. It seems like Vodafone Idea will not launch any such cheap 4G handsets to retain the userbase. Vi Expected to Lose 50-70 Million Users in Next 1 YearStruggling telco Vi has been losing subscribers since its merger in 2018. And the same is expected to continue over the next year as well. Vi could lose 50-to-70 million subscribers in the next one year," said Ratings Agency Fitch. Despite losing subscribers, Vodafone Idea CEO recently stated that the telco would not shy away from raising tariffs. The ET report also adds that Vi could raise tariffs this Diwali itself, whereas it may not be the case with Airtel and Reliance Jio. Several officials of Bharti Airtel stated that the current tariff levels are still unsustainable in the market, but analysts predict Airtel might not join Vi in raising tariffs this year. And the low subscriber additions mean Reliance Jio could also rethink about hiking tariffs this year. | BSNL Removes Rs 1,498 Prepaid STV That Offered 91GB Data for a Year Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:08 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-stv1498-prepaid-data-removed/307795/, BSNL Removes Rs 1,498 Prepaid STV That Offered 91GB Data for a Year
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited aka BSNL has removed the Rs 1,498 Data STV which it introduced several years ago. We have seen BSNL updating several STVs in recent years and the Rs 1,498 Data STV is also part of the same. When we last reported about the Rs 1,498 plan, it offered the customers 91GB of data without any daily or monthly limit for 365 days. The removal of Rs 1,498 STV has been confirmed by BSNL on its official website, however, there’s no reason mentioned at the moment. Alongside the Rs 1,498 plan, the state-run telco also removed STV-13, STV-20, STV-93 and STV-111. While the information has been posted on the BSNL Karnataka website, we can also confirm the removal of the STV-1498 in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana circle. BSNL Removes 5 Prepaid STVs Across Several CirclesThe STV-1498 from BSNL used to offer 91GB data for one year. It isn’t amongst the popular STVs offered by BSNL, but for the users who were looking for fixed data benefit for a year, it used to be the go-to choice. We are expecting BSNL to introduce a new prepaid STV with fixed data benefit in the coming weeks. As for the other removed STVs, they are STV-13 which used to provide a user 130 SMSs for seven days, STV-20 that offered 265 SMSes to any network for 15 days, STV-93 which allowed users to get free incoming calls alongside 120 minutes of free outgoing calls to ant network for 30 days. Lastly, the STV-111 used to ship with Rs 90 talk time and Rs 70 worth outgoing on-net minutes. BSNL made the official announcement regarding the removal of these five STVs on its Karnataka website. However, when we tried to recharge the STV-1498 on a BSNL Telangana mobile number, the plan wasn’t showing up. Same is the case with BSNL Chennai circle. So it seems like all the five STVs have been removed across several circles where BSNL is operating. Vodafone Idea Lags in 4G Network, Impacted by Subscriber Base DeclineICICI Securities in its report highlighted that the second quarter performance of Vodafone Idea "was a repeat of its continued weakness in terms of subscriber churn, lag in 4G network and balance sheet stress." Despite the operator registering an 1.2% growth in its revenues, ICICI Securities said that Vodafone Idea was "impacted" by decline in its subscriber base. The operator's user base is said to have declined around eight million to 271.8 million with the churn rate increasing to 2.6% during the quarter. "Even the post-paid sub base at 21.2 mn was down by 0.3 mn QoQ, clearly reflecting the weak competitive positioning," ICICI Securities said in its report. "We note that ARPU growth of 4.4% QoQ, was largely owing to [the] benign base of Q1, wherein recharge unavailability and extension had led to decline." ICICI Securities says Vodafone Idea "Weakest" Telecom OperatorIn early September, Vodafone Idea board approved a fundraising plan of up to Rs 25,000 crore through a mix of debt and equity to meet its capital needs. "The company is in talks with several parties and expects the same in two to three months," ICICI Securities said in its report. "Similarly, on [the] tariff correction front, without indicating [the] exact timeline, it indicated that tariff hike is likely in near term and/or floor tariff implementation will be key. We believe tariff hike is a prerequisite for fund raising." ICICI Securities said that Vodafone Idea is the weakest private telecom operator in India and that its its "survival hinges on quick capital infusion and tariff hike/floor tariff implementation." "The need for capitalisation is of paramount importance mainly due to its lagging spends on network, coverage gaps and continued churn," ICICI Securities said in its report. WhatsApp has been working on disappearing messages feature for a long time now. However, similar to several other unreleased features, the disappearing messages feature is also under testing right now. A new report surfaced online suggests the disappearing messages feature will delete the chats after seven days. The feature will work similarly to the one that’s already present on Instagram. For the unaware, Instagram allows users to send disappearing image or video. But on Instagram, the message will disappear after the user opening it. Whereas the same on WhatsApp is said to delete after seven days. WhatsApp Disappearing Messages: What We Know So FarAccording to WABetaInfo, the disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp is under testing and there’s no available information on when it will go official to general users. Here’s how the ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature on WhatsApp works; If a user receives a disappearing message, it will appear in the chat for seven days. And if the user does not open WhatsApp for seven days, the message will automatically disappear. The latest report further added that there would be an only seven-day period for the messages on WhatsApp to disappear. Nevertheless, we believe that WhatsApp will enhance the feature and add various timeframes for a message to disappear, but for now, WABetaInfo says the company has just seven-day window period. WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature might have several downsides at the launch. The report adds the recipient will be able to take a screenshot of a disappearing message before it gets disappeared. Also, if the disappearing message has an image or video, then it is also possible for the recipient to save it in the gallery. As of this reporting, the disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp seems to be in the initial phases of development. When it releases, it is expected to be available for both Android and iOS platforms, and maybe for KaiOS as well. Would you use disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp? | Vodafone Idea Will Not Hesitate in Raising Tariff Prices Ahead of Airtel and Jio Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:45 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-hesitate-tariff-hike/307670/, Vodafone Idea Will Not Hesitate in Raising Tariff Prices Ahead of Airtel and Jio
Back in December 2019, Vodafone Idea (Vi) was the first telecom operator to raise prepaid tariff prices which was followed by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio as well. A new Livemint report now states that Vi will not ‘shy away’ from raising tariff prices again first ahead of the top two telcos. After the post-earnings call, Ravinder Takkar, the CEO of the company, opined that the ‘current price levels are unsustainable.’ If we look at the top three telcos, Vodafone Idea has the lowest ARPU at Rs 119, however, it saw a decent increase from Rs 107 a year ago. Airtel is currently leading the chart on the ARPU front. Industry Should Have Rs 300 ARPU: Vi CEOThanks to the tariff hike nearly a year ago, telcos saw some relief on the financial front. Reliance Jio is now the leading telco with over 400 million users and the telco continues its focus on aggressive subscriber addition. On the flip side, Bharti Airtel is focussing on increasing ARPU and generating revenue. It seems like Vi will also employ the same strategy as Airtel. "If you look at the current pricing, there is something wrong with it…We have said before that we would not shy away from hiking prices and we will be happy to be the first one to do so. We hope others in the industry will follow,” Takkar said. He also added the industry should look at Rs 300 ARPU in the long run. Alongside Vodafone Idea CEO, Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal, also stated that the “industry cannot continue to function at the current prices for voice and data services.” At the moment, there’s no timeline on when both Airtel and Vodafone Idea will raise the tariffs. Since we last saw the tariff hike a year ago, the next one could be right around the corner. In addition to that, the Trai could soon set a floor price for voice and data in the country. Again, there’s no timeline for the same from either Trai or telecom operators, but setting the floor price is on the priority list, according to various reports.
