Delay in 4G Rollout and Non-Procurement of 2G Equipment Will Impact Revenues: BSNL

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-compensation-government-4g-services/308035/, Delay in 4G Rollout and Non-Procurement of 2G Equipment Will Impact Revenues: BSNL

BSNL is seeking a ‘fair compensation’ from the government for delaying the rollout of 4G services in the country. Besides 4G services, the state-run BSNL also wrote to the government to compensate for non-upgradation of radio equipment from ZTE and lack of providing excellent 2G services to the users because of non-procurement of equipment. BSNL is still struggling to match the likes of Reliance Jio and Airtel due to the lack of 4G services. The highly competitive Indian telecom market is all about affordable tariff plans and 4G services. While BSNL is a strong contender in the tariff plans segment, it fails to match the rivals in 4G network aspect. So far, BSNL managed to launch 4G services in select circles with the help of the existing 3G spectrum.

BSNL Being Stopped from Procuring 2G Equipment

Exactly a year ago, the government announced a massive revival package for BSNL as part of which MTNL will act as a subsidiary to BSNL. However, the revival package is yet to have an impact on BSNL; For the unaware, BSNL is yet to place an order for building 4G network. Thanks to the pandemic, BSNL 4G tenders are getting postponed.

Keeping the BSNL 4G tender issue aside, it is also said that a ‘special committee’ appointed by the government is not allowing BSNL to procure 2G equipment. The reason behind this is the committee wants all the BSNL 2G users to be migrated to 4G once the service launches.

Citing the above reasons, the telco has now approached the government asking for compensation because these factors will impact the revenues and profitability which were fixed at the time of designing the revival package. "Deterioration of 2G services on account on non-procurement of 2G equipment for replacement will severally impact revenue and market share of BSNL," the company has written, according to Financial Express.

Having said that, BSNL might prepare a revised 4G tender after receiving a proper response from the government on these issues. It is high-time for BSNL to roll out the 4G services as the top two private telcos (Jio and Airtel) said to have more than 95% of LTE availability.

In a recent release, Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Series X and S users will be able to stream content from Apple TV using the console. Not only the Series X and S users, but Xbox Series One users will get Apple TV as well. Microsoft in a statement said that on the launch of all-new Xbox consoles on November 10, the users will get more entertaining apps than what they are getting with Xbox One at the moment. So Xbox will become the first console in the world to get Apple TV on it. More details on the story ahead.

Apple TV to be Offered to Xbox Series S and X Along with Sony PS5

Xbox users will get the support of Apple TV directly with the console. Apple TV is also going to be coming to the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5). As per a TimeNowNews report, For the PS5, Apple TV will arrive on November 12, 2020. The Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X will launch on November 10, 2020, in India. Post that, Xbox One users as well should be able to get the Apple TV app on their consoles.

For the unaware, Apple TV+ is different from the Apple TV. Apple TV includes Apple TV+, which offers users original over-the-top (OTT) content. Its subscription cost is Rs 99 per month for the Indian users. But with the Apple TV, apart from the Apple TV+, users can also purchase and rent movies if they wish to.

On top of this, there are other OTT streaming platforms integrated within the Apple TV app as well. For India, users can get content from Eros Now Select and Tastemade. So once Apple TV is offered with the Xbox consoles, users will be able to access content from all these platforms.

Adding to this, Indian Android and Windows users don't get direct access to the Apple TV content because they don't own an Apple device. Thus, owning an Xbox console would allow the users to access content from Apple TV+ directly with an app without needing to go to the website of the OTT platform every time they wish to stream something.

Further, Dolat Capital said that Jio is also "best-positioned to capitalize" in the scenario of Vodafone Idea shutting down its operations.

"With all the three telcos chasing to grab the 4G customers as well as burning cash to maintain the high level of voice mins/data usage per subscriber; we believe the time is ripe for all the telcos to raise the tariff table and compete at higher price points," Dolat Capital said in its report. "This is inevitable in our view."

The DTH operator has a knack of adding and removing channels depending on multiple reasons; one of them being to enhance user experience. Airtel Digital TV users will now get the service of five channels removed earlier namely Sahara Samay, Sahara Samay Bihar, Sahara Samay MP, Sahara Samay UP, and Sahara Samay Rajasthan. More details on the story ahead.

Airtel Digital TV Brings Back Five Old Channels

Airtel Digital TV has brought back five of its old channels for the users. The first channel is 'Sahara Samay' and it is a free channel available for the users at channel number 330. Talking about the third channel added back, it is 'Sahara Samay MP' and it is also a free channel available at channel number '344'. The other two channels are 'Sahara Samay UP' and 'Sahara Samay Rajasthan' available at channel numbers 333 and 332 respectively. These both are also free for the users.

One thing to note here is that all the old channels added back are news channels and were removed by Airtel Digital TV earlier.

At the same time, Airtel Digital TV will also remove a new channel on November 13, 2020, called 'Malai Murasu'. Currently, the operator is displaying a banner at the bottom of the screen alerting the users about the same.

BSNL Brings Back Voice Calling Limit to Prepaid Users, Revises STV 395

After removing five prepaid STVs, BSNL is back again in the news with the revision of STV 395. With this revision, BSNL brought back the voice calling limit which it used to have on prepaid plans a couple of years ago. The revised STV 395 will have a limit of 3000 on-net minutes and 1800 off-net minutes. This is down from the unlimited voice calling benefit the telco has been offering till October 31. The STV 395 also offers 2GB daily data benefit for 71 days and it remains the same even after the latest revision. The new revision has been effective across all the circles where BSNL is offering the STV 395. Continue reading to know more about the revised STV 395 in detail.

BSNL STV 395 Revised: New Benefits Detailed

The STV 395 from BSNL will now offer free 3000 on-net minutes and 1800 off-net minutes. Earlier, the same STV 395 used to ship with unlimited voice calling, however, the telco used to cap at 250 minutes per day. After the free minutes, all the voice calls will be charged at 20 paise per minute. This is an interesting move from BSNL as private telcos Airtel and Vodafone Idea are offering unlimited voice calling without any FUP limit. Reliance Jio is capping the off-net voice calling minutes and charging six paise per minute.

BSNL is also offering 2GB data per day with the STV 395 and the validity of the plan remains unchanged at 71 days. The revised STV 395 is already effective across all telecom circles except Mumbai and New Delhi where MTNL is providing telecom services in place of BSNL.

As always, BSNL did not provide the exact reason behind bringing back the voice calling FUP limit. It is said to see BSNL even limiting the on-net voice calling with STV 395. A limit of 3000 BSNL to BSNL minutes for 71 days will surely irk the BSNL users who recharge this plan regularly. What do you think of this move from BSNL? Let us know by commenting below.

Cupertino giant Apple just announced a new event for November 10. The event invite highlights ‘One More Thing,’ hinting at a major product unveiling. Earlier this year at the WWDC 2020 virtual event, Apple announced that it would launch ARM-based MacBooks by the end of this year. In line with the schedule, the company has now sent out media invites for the same and the November 10 event could be the last one for this year from Apple. A new Bloomberg report highlights Apple will launch three new MacBooks next week with its in-house Silicon processors. Apple has been using Intel processors on its laptops for nearly 15 years now and the partnership seems to be finally ending.

13-inch MacBook Air & Pro Models to Launch Alongside 16-inch MacBook Pro

Apple is going to launch two new 13-inch MacBook models- the popular 13-inch MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The 13-inch models are said to be manufactured by Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.). In contrast, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is said to be manufactured Quanta Computer Inc. All the three models are already in production.

Apple might show the 13-inch MacBooks next week alongside just unveiling the 16-inch MacBook Pro. As for the availability, the 13-inch models could retail by the end of November, but the 16-inch MacBook Pro will likely be available for purchase in early 2021. Besides the new ARM-based chips, the upcoming MacBook models will not feature any major changes. Apple is said to retain the same design as 2020 MacBooks.

The switch to ARM-based Macs will allow Apple to create a more streamlined ecosystem. The much-awaited macOS Big Sur could also be announced at the same November 10 event for existing MacBooks and also for the upcoming models.

As for other details, the same Bloomberg report adds the first ARM-based Mac processors will be based on the A14 chip which we already saw on the entire iPhone 12 series and the iPad Air. It will be interesting to see how these ARM-based MacBooks perform.

Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber Entry-Tier 100 Mbps plans Against BSNL New 100 Mbps Plan

airtel-jiofiber-entry-tier-100mbps-against-bsnl
For months now, people have been working and studying from their homes. A lot of homes have more than three to four users connected to the same Wi-Fi network which can essentially reduce the speed for each user. Thus the need for high-speed broadband plans has increased. The users can get a 100 Mbps broadband plan from several players including the top wired broadband providers such as Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Let's take a look at all of the plans individually from these service providers and see what each of the plans offer.

Airtel Xstream Fiber Rs 799 Plan

The Airtel Xstream Fiber Rs 799 broadband plan offers users 100 Mbps download and upload speeds with 3.3TB (3,333GB) data for the month. Adding to this, there is unlimited voice calling included with the plan as well. As for over-the-top (OTT) benefits, users get a one-year free subscription of Airtel Xstream Premium, Shaw Academy, Wynk Music. Further, the company highlights that the Airtel Xstream app also enables users access to Voot Music, Eros Now, Hungama Play, Shemaroo Me, and Ultra as part of the Airtel Xstream app.

JioFiber Rs 699 Plan

The Rs 699 plan from JioFiber also offers users 100 Mbps download and upload speed. With this plan, the users are entitled to get 3.3TB (3,300GB) data for the month. The operator also offers unlimited voice calling included with this plan. However, there are no OTT benefits offered with this plan and the users don't even get the complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps.

BSNL Rs 519 Plan

It is worth noting here that this BSNL revamped plan is currently applicable in select circles of India. The Rs 519 revamped plan from BSNL now ships with 100 Mbps speed and 3GB fair-usage-policy (FUP) data every day. Post consumption of the 3GB data, the user can continue browsing at 2 Mbps speed. The users also get unlimited voice calling with the plan as well. Just like Jio, there are no OTT benefits included with this plan.

Which Plan is Better?

It is quite clear that the 100 Mbps broadband plan from Airtel Xstream Fiber is the best amongst the aforementioned internet service providers (ISPs). The reason is that it offers the most amount of data at a very high internet speed and there are OTT benefits as well, while Jio and BSNL don't offer a single OTT benefit with their plans. One thing worth acknowledging is that even though Airtel Xstream Fiber offers the most number of benefits, it is the most expensive one as well. But if the user can do without the OTT benefits and less amount of data, then the revamped BSNL plan is actually better than Jio's.
