Popular streaming service, Netflix, is slowly gaining momentum in India due to its partnership with telecom operator Reliance Jio. A couple of months ago, Reliance Jio launched the JioPostpaid Plus plans which come with bundled Netflix Mobile plan worth Rs 199. Even the basic JioPostpaid Plus plan priced at Rs 399 offers the Netflix subscription which is surely attractive. A new TechRadar report citing a research report by Media Partners Asia now says Netflix is helped by its partnership with Jio. The streaming platform could end the year with 4.6 million paid subscribers in India. This is surely a decent number and Netflix is trying various ways to grab new customers. Netflix Mobile Plan to Remain India ExclusiveIt has been just two months since the launch of JioPostpaid Plus plans and Netflix already sees a positive effect of the tie-up with the telco. While Jio is providing the Netflix Mobile plan with every Postpaid Plus plan, there’s also an option to upgrade to other plans at a lower price compared to what users get directly from Netflix. Besides JioPostpaid Plus, users are also getting free Netflix subscription via JioFiber as well. Netflix is also hoping to perform better in the fourth quarter in India. Furthermore, it confirmed the basic Netflix Mobile worth Rs 199 will remain India-exclusive for now. “India is the only country where we are launching a mobile-only plan. The country is a pillar for us. With the huge population rise, rising middle class and all the entertainment that we can create out of India, it is an important play in the books of Netflix,” the company had said, according to TechRadar. Going by this, we may not see Netflix hiking the subscription charges in India. Very recently, Netflix hiked the prices of its Basic and Premium plans in the United States and Canada. Netflix is also betting in developing more local content to attract viewers. And the Netflix app has been integrated with Jio’ Set-Top Boxes too. For the unaware, Xiaomi India has won the award for two years straight from RedQuanta itself. RedQuanta and its Lowest Failure Rate Study DetailedAccording to RedQuanta, the objective of the study is to evaluate the major smartphone brands in the market on parameters determining the recognised quality of a smartphone. In addition to this, the brand also came on top for its affordability parameter which is very much expected from Xiaomi. | AGR Dues Nullified the Advantage of Tariff Hikes for Telcos: Crisil Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:29 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/agr-dues-nullified-the-advantage-tariff-hikes/308226/, AGR Dues Nullified the Advantage of Tariff Hikes for Telcos: Crisil
Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues have nullified the advantage for the telcos which tariff hike on December 2019 had created, said Crisil Research. As per an ET Telecom story, the company's return on capital employed (ROCE) has dropped because of the AGR dues liability. The tariff hike should have increased it, but because of the AGR dues, the effect of tariff hike is rendered useless for when the ROCE of the telcos is concerned. The ROCE has been pulled down to 4%-5% for the telcos instead of increasing further. More on the story ahead. AGR Dues Have Brought the ROCE for the Companies DownThe rating firm Crisil said that if the AGR dues were not there, tariff hikes undertaken would have helped the industry in increasing the ROCE to 7% in 2021 and 9% in 2022. The ROCE had dropped as low as 3% for the sector in the fiscal year 2020. This is why the network operators now need to increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) by 25% between Rs 175 and Rs 180 within the next 6 to 12 months. Growing the ARPU would help the operators in achieving ROCE of 10%. Crisil further said, "Tariff hikes, rising 4G adoption and increasing data consumption by adopting content-led bundled pricing strategies could help boost ARPU growth. That could, in turn, beam up profitability, which will also help telcos invest in 5G networks over the medium term." The analysts at Crisil believe that a Rs 1 addition in the ARPU of the telcos will increase the Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation) of the industry by Rs 1,000 crore. This will be because of the high operating leverage of the industry. Thus if the ARPU were to increase by 25% for the industry, it would double the Ebitda to Rs 79,000 crore in the fiscal year 2022 as compared to Rs 38,500 crore in the fiscal year 2020. Nitesh Jain, Director, Crisil Ratings said, "It is pertinent to note that despite getting relief in AGR payment terms, at this juncture, sponsor support, sizeable tariff hikes, and prudent capex would remain crucial to support the credit profile of telcos." ATC Built Close to 1,000 Sites in India in Third QuarterTom Bartlett, president and CEO of ATC, said in the earnings call that the Indian telecom market is "very strong" and that the operators are now looking beyond the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) case. "I think there has been a general slowdown overall, not just regards to COVID, but I think also with regard to clearing through a lot of the AGR, a lot of tax issues, I think that put a slowdown," Bartlett said in the earnings call on Thursday. "But hopefully, much of that will be behind us and the carriers I know are really starting to think about and move forward in terms of looking to increase kind of rates of growth going forward." Further, Smith said that the ATC "built just shy of a thousand towers in India in the quarter" ended September 30, 2020 and that the company witnessed close to 14% in returns. "We’ve seen continued growth in the India marketplace from a couple of the large carriers there," Bartlett said in the earnings call. "We’re getting double-digit rates of return right out of the gate." ATC is said to own and operate 74,569 tower sites in India as of September 30, 2020, with the country accounting for 15.4% of the total property revenue during its third quarter. Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Reliance Jio are said to be major telecom operators to be engaged with ATC in India. ATC Sees AGR Decision As Positive for Telecom OperatorsWith the Supreme Court providing a 10-year time period for the telecom operators to repay their AGR dues, Smith said that the company sees the decision on a "positive" note. "We view this as a positive as it provides incremental clarity in the marketplace in near-term breathing room for the carriers in terms of their liquidity," Smith said in the earnings call. Meanwhile, Bartlett also highlighted that the company is targeting to reduce its "scope on fossil fuel consumption in diesel related greenhouse gas emissions" in India by more than 60% by 2027. "We have made significant progress towards that objective having reduced annual diesel consumption by 65 million liters since 2017, after normalizing for site count growth," Bartlett said in the earnings call on Thursday. Samsung is rumoured to launch the Galaxy S21 series on January 14, 2021. The Galaxy S21 series will include three devices- the standard Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21+ and the premium Galaxy S21 Ultra. Earlier, we have seen the renders of the Galaxy S21 and the January 2021 launch was also tipped. Now, we have the exact launch date, thanks to the tipster Jon Prosser. He also says Samsung will take pre-orders of the devices on the launch date itself, but the shipping will start on January 29, 2021. So far, the Galaxy S21 devices are said to be minor upgrades over the Galaxy S20 series. Going by the renders, we can confirm the company is ditching curved display design and they will also come powered by Exynos 2100 SoC in India and other Asian markets. Samsung Galaxy S21 Launch and Pre-Order Details LeakedSamsung’s upcoming flagship devices could launch in several colours- Black, White, Grey, Silver, Violet and Pink. It is exciting to see Samsung launching the Galaxy S21 series ahead of the usual February-March release. Even OnePlus is said to launch the OnePlus 9 series sometime in March 2021. The exact reason for why Samsung is launching the Galaxy S21 series in January 2021 is unknown at the moment. If a recent report is to be believed, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, despite being one of the best Android phones of 2020 isn’t doing well in terms of sales. Even the Galaxy S20+ has been discounted in India to Rs 49,999 during the festive season. Leaks suggest that Samsung is ditching the curved screens for the Galaxy S21 series. The phones could be powered by the in-house Exynos 2100 processor in India, whereas we will see the Snapdragon 875 SoC models in countries like the United States and China. Samsung will most likely retain features like 120Hz AMOLED display, in-display fingerprint scanners and big batteries on the Galaxy S21 series. The phones are also expected to come with Penta-camera setups on the back with two telephoto lens. More details regarding the entire Galaxy S21 lineup are expected to surface online in the coming weeks. | How the Micromax In Note 1 Fares Against Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:51 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/micromax-in-note-redmi-note-comparison/308110/, How the Micromax In Note 1 Fares Against Xiaomi Redmi Note 9
Micromax successfully made a comeback to the Indian smartphone market yesterday with the ‘In Note 1’ and ‘In 1b’ devices. Before the launch, Micromax received a lot of flak on social media for putting the anti-Chinese sentiment instead of talking about the phones. However, the company managed to impress everyone on the pricing front. Since India is a price-conscious market, it is good to see Micromax betting on that aspect. The Micromax In Note 1 goes directly against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 that was launched in July this year. Both the phones rock identical specs like Full HD+ screen with punch-hole cutout, MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, 5000mAh batteries and a 48MP quad-camera setup is present on the rear side of both the phones. In this article, we compare the on-paper specifications of both the newly launched Micromax In Note 1 and the popular Redmi Note 9 from Xiaomi. Micromax In Note 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9: Design and DisplayBoth the Micromax In Note 1 and Redmi Note 9 are constructed out of plastic. The In Note 1 has an X-shaped gradient design on the rear panel similar to the Honor 9X. The Redmi Note 9 has a glossy back panel and comes in a host of colour options- Aqua Green, Arctic White, Pebble Grey, Scarlet Red and Shadow Black. The camera module layout is different on both the phones; The In Note 1’s quad-camera array is on the left corner side of the rear and the fingerprint scanner is located on the centre of the rear panel. The Redmi Note 9’s quad-camera setup is located on the top centre of the back panel along with the fingerprint scanner. To the front, we are looking at a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display on the In Note 1 with a centred punch-hole. The Redmi Note 9 sports a 6.53-inch Full HD+ with the same punch-hole cutout placed to the left corner side of the screen. Micromax In Note 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9: Hardware and SoftwareBoth the smartphones are powered by MediaTek’s Helio G85 chipset. However, the differentiator here is the RAM and storage. The In Note 1 comes in two configurations- 4GB+64GB and 4GB+128GB, whereas the Redmi Note 9 can be picked up in three variants- 4GB+64GB, 4GB+128GB and 6GB+128GB. Both the phones offer a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
Micromax sprang up a surprise by saying the In Note 1 and In 1b will run stock Android 10 out of the box. The company also promises two major software updates which is a good thing to see. With Xiaomi moving away from the Android One segment, consumers can look out for Micromax In Note 1 in the budget segment for a stock Android smartphone. The Redmi Note 9 also runs Android 10, but it has MIUI 12 layered on top. Micromax In Note 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9: Cameras and BatteryThe In Note 1 has a quad-camera setup on the back comprising of 48MP primary sensor, 5MP wide-angle shooter and a couple of 2MP sensors. To the front, it has a 16MP shooter. On the flip side, we have the Redmi Note 9 with the same 48MP primary shooter, 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth lens. The phone also sports a 13MP shooter on the front. Lastly, moving onto the battery segment; The Micromax phone is backed by a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The Redmi Note 9 has a 5020mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging support. However, Xiaomi is bundling an 18W fast chafer inside the retail box of the Redmi Note 9. Micromax In Note 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9: Pricing in IndiaMicromax has launched two variants of the In Note 1 in India- 4GB+64GB at Rs 10,999 and 4GB+128GB model at Rs 12,499. The Redmi Note 9 is already available in India in three variants- 4GB+64GB at Rs 11,999, 4GB+128GB at Rs 12,999 and 6GB+128GB model is retailing for Rs 14,999. Xiaomi is selling the Note 9 with Rs 500 discount for a limited period. The Micromax In Note 1 will be available for purchase starting November 26 in India.
