Xiaomi India today announced a new programme called ‘Mi Smart Upgrade.’ As the name of the programme itself suggests, it is a buyback scheme for Redmi and Mi devices. Xiaomi launches a plethora of phones every year and some users purchase almost every new phone from the brand. The Mi Smart Upgrade scheme is for users who are looking at upgrading to the latest offering from Xiaomi. As part of this scheme, users can upgrade to new models at an affordable price point by exchanging their existing device. Xiaomi says users tend to change their devices every year and the value of the phone ‘depreciates’ right after the purchase of the device. So to avoid the low resale value, the Chinese company has brought this upgrade programme.

Mi Smart Upgrade: Everything You Need to Know

Talking about the Mi Smart Upgrade programme in detail, users get the freedom to encash their device any time after three months till 15 months of purchase with exchange value ranging from 40% to 70% of the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of the phone. Under this scheme, users can get up to 70% of the assured value within 4-6 months, 60% for 7-9 months, 50% for 10-12 months and 40% on devices which are 13-15 months old.

Users can get an assured buyback value of 40% of the suggested retail price even after the warranty expires till 15 months from the date of purchase of the old device, says Xiaomi.

Do make a note that the Mi Smart Upgrade plan has to be purchased separately alongside the device. The plans start from Rs 399 for devices like Redmi 9 Prime and Redmi 9, and it will go all way the up to Rs 1,999 for the Xiaomi Mi 10. So the price of the Mi Smart Upgrade plan varies with the price of the smartphone. The recently Mi 10T Pro is also part of this scheme and the Mi Smart Upgrade plan for the same costs Rs 1,699. Consumers can buy the Mi Smart upgrade add on along with their smartphone purchase at all Mi Authorized Retail outlets.

The Mi Smart Upgrade scheme is cleverly done by Xiaomi, but it is not something new. In the end, the customer gets a good deal for exchanging the device and Xiaomi retains a customer as well.

Tariff Hike Necessary in Order to Sustain, AGR Dues Only of Limited Help: COAI

tariff-hike-necessary-to-sustain-agr-dues
Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues case against the telco came to an end earlier this year when the Supreme Court (SC) of India finally sided with the government. The SC had ruled in favour of DoT and asked the telcos to pay the dues within the next 10 years out of which 10% of the dues have to be paid before March 31, 2021. Even though this decision brought legal relief to the telcos, it isn't enough to help them sustain in the industry. A tariff hike is in order for the telcos to be able to grow substantially. More on the story ahead.

Tariff Hike Needed for ARPU of Telcos to Grow

As per an ET Telecom report, SP Kochhar, Director General of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said, "The order came as a sort of a conclusion and closure for an issue that was long pending, so the industry is relieved from the perspective of its legal closure. However, it can be termed as a partial relief only."

Kochhar expressed that for the long-term growth of the industry, a tariff hike is necessary. After the verdict, Vodafone Idea (Vi) had dues of over Rs 58,254 crore, Tata Teleservices of Rs 16,798 crore, Bharti Airtel of Rs 43,980 crore, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) of Rs 5,835.85 crore, and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) of Rs 4,352.09 crore.

Vi recently got more relief on its victory in the arbitration proceedings against India on the issue of tax liability of Rs 20,000 crore. However, the telco still faced a net loss of Rs 7,218 crore in the Q2 FY20-21. Vi Chief Executive Officer, Ravinder Takkar has said that the company won't shy away from being the first one to increase the tariff rates.

The advantage for the industry which tariff hike undertook last year had created got nullified when the AGR dues liability came upon the telcos. The return on capital employed (ROCE) has been pulled down to 4%-5% for the industry. Thus the long-term growth of the telecom sector heavily depends on higher average revenue per user (ARPU) which only tariff hikes can create.

airtel-replace-zte-nokia-4g-equipment-punjab

Bharti Airtel is likely to stop taking 4G equipment from the Chinese vendor ZTE in Punjab. The telco is looking to replace ZTE with the Finnish supplier Nokia. As per a report from ET Telecom, Nokia stands a chance of becoming the main equipment supplier for Bharti Airtel in the Punjab circle. Nokia and Airtel are currently in the stage of finalising things for the contract. Once both the parties come to an agreement, Nokia will replace ZTE as the main supplier of 4G equipment for Bharti Airtel in Punjab. More details on the story ahead.

ZTE to be Replaced by Nokia as Main 4G Equipment Supplier for Bharti Airtel

Following in the footsteps of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel is aiming to decrease its dependency on the Chinese gear suppliers for providing telecom services. The telco is now going to replace ZTE with Nokia for the Punjab circle.

Apart from Punjab, Bharti Airtel takes 4G equipment from ZTE in Kolkata and Haryana circles. The other Chinese vendor, Huawei has also been replaced by the telco in two different circles. Now Airtel works with Huawei in two locations only namely UP (West) and Karnataka instead of four earlier.

Bharti Airtel would also look to replace the Chinese vendors from the other existing locations very soon as well. The contracts would go to Nokia and Ericsson respectively. The telecom operator had recently announced that both Ericsson and Nokia have partnered with the company to develop 5G equipment within India. This would allow for the development of Indian economy.

Business for Chinese vendors in India has decreased. ZTE now provides equipment and gears in three circles of India for Vodafone Idea (Vi) and in six circles for the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Airtel isn't planning to award any fresh contracts to the Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE in the current scenario. This is to increase data security for Indian users. As per the analysts, the Indian telecom industry would require at least four years for completely removing the Chinese equipment from their networks.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel Continued with Network Expansion Plans Even Under COVID

jio-airtel-continued-network-expansion-under-covid
Ceragon CEO Ira Palti on Monday said in the third quarter earnings call that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continued with their network expansion plans "even under COVID." Palti said that the largest wireless operator in India and the second largest wireless operator in India were both "fully operational" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ceragon Networks, a company that offers wireless backhaul and fronthaul solutions on Monday reported "strong revenues" in its third quarter results for the period ended September 30, 2020. The company registered a US$70.6 million in revenues in its third quarter as compared to US$62.4 million in revenues in its previous quarter.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel Were Fully Operational Under COVID

Palti said that Ceragon has been running at "full speed" since India lifted its lockdown restrictions at the beginning of August.

"We’re running full speed both in delivery of equipment and delivery in the field and doing installations," Palti said in the third quarter earnings call.

In late April, it was announced that Bharti Airtel had picked Ceragon products and services for "additional 4G network Expansion" from the first quarter of 2020. In a release, it was said that Airtel was looking to "increase its network capacity to address growing demand for broadband amidst sharp rise in data consumption" across the country. It was also highlighted that the operator with Ceragon's solutions can "quickly respond to surge in network capacity demands, and prepare for long-term network capacity growth."

"Both Jio and Bharti continued moving ahead with the plans even under COVID,” Palti said. “They were fully operational. We saw both the relevant bookings and we saw the relevant orders and the minute that everything was lifted up, we got a huge pressure to help and do the deployment."

Vodafone Idea Remains Big Question Mark for Ceragon

Crucially, Palti said that Ceragon expects the bookings and the deployments to "continue at the current run rate" till early or even late 2021.

"I do expect this to continue at the current run rate probably into first or maybe all of next year, as really they build up the network, there is a certain speed out there," Palti said. "The only big question mark is a customer of ours, which we haven’t worked with for a while, which is Vodafone in India, which is going under significant changes."

Palti said that the Vodafone Idea has not been "investing in the network for quite a while" and that Ceragon is "waiting to see" how the operator runs its business in the days ahead. Further, Palti also highlighted that Vodafone Idea "predominantly" used Huawei equipment and that the recent limitations on Chinese vendors in India would force the operator to look for alternate vendors.

"I think we’re in a good position," Palti said. "But let’s wait and see until they [Vodafone Idea] make their decisions. I think they have issues before that, which have to do with the financing and getting the financing in place and then I think we’re in a good running position there."

Palti also highlighted that Huawei had a 20% to 25% telecom equipment market share in India and that Cergaon picked "some of that share already" with its deals with Bharti Airtel.

Upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Model Might Offer 120Hz Adaptive Refresh Rate Display

Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:13 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/upcoming-redmi-note-9-display-specs/308451/, Upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Model Might Offer 120Hz Adaptive Refresh Rate Display

Just a couple of days ago, we reported that Xiaomi is planning to launch three new models under the Redmi Note 9 series in China this month. And now, details regarding a Redmi Note 9 variant have surfaced online. Similar to the recently launched Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro flagship smartphone, one of the three models will feature a 120Hz Adaptive Refresh Rate screen. This news is coming from China’s microblogging site Weibo. The leak also says the Redmi Note 9 variant with 120Hz screen will also have a 108MP camera and a 4800mAh battery. So this could mean we are looking at the high-end model of the Redmi Note 9 series. Earlier leaked renders suggested a Poco X3 like design for these upcoming Note 9 smartphones.

Key Redmi Note 9 Details Leaked Online

Xiaomi already launched the Redmi Note 9 in several countries including India. However, the company is not done yet. Going by the rumours, there will be another three smartphones under the Redmi Note 9 series and they are rumoured to launch by the end of this month in China.

Adaptive Sync is a feature introduced by Xiaomi with the Mi 10T Pro. This feature will set the refresh rate of the screen dynamically from 30Hz to 120Hz based on the content produced on the screen. This means the Redmi Note 9 with a rumoured 4800mAh cell will deliver decent battery life. The Weibo leak also suggests a 108MP primary sensor on the rear side of this Redmi Note 9 model. So far, Xiaomi has launched more than five devices with the 108MP sensor and it is coming to the Redmi lineup for the first time.

We are not sure what Xiaomi is planning with the Redmi Note 9 lineup. There are already several phones under the Redmi Note 9 series, so we hope the company makes a last-minute change to launch the devices under Redmi Note 10 series.

Xiaomi first launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro devices in India in March this year, but we are not expecting any more launches from the Chinese brand this year in the Asian sub-continent. So a major refresh is expected from Xiaomi with the Redmi Note 10 lineup when it launches them next year.

ACT Fibernet 150 Mbps Broadband Plan Available at Rs 999 per Month in 2 New Cities

Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:54 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/act-fibernet-kakinada-broadband-plans-revision/308445/, ACT Fibernet 150 Mbps Broadband Plan Available at Rs 999 per Month in 2 New Cities

ACT Fibernet aka Atria Convergence Technologies has revised its broadband plans in two more cities- Kakinada and Rajahmundry. In both the cities, ACT Fibernet is now offering just three broadband plans priced at Rs 549, Rs 699 and Rs 999 per month, with speeds up to 150 Mbps. The company’s ACT Diamond plan available at Rs 999 is also part of Netflix cashback offer; As part of this offer, users can avail Rs 100 cashback on Netflix subscription every month. Ever since the new broadband plans from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel came out, ACT Fibernet has been on a revision spree. We already saw the Internet Service Provider (ISP) revising plans in more than ten cities and there are two more cities added to the list.

ACT Fibernet New Broadband Plans in Kakinada and Rajahmundry

The new three broadband plans ACT Fibernet providing are ACT Silver, ACT Gold and ACT Diamond, priced at Rs 549, Rs 699 and Rs 999 respectively.

The ACT Silver broadband plan in Kakinada and Rajahmundry offers a user 50 Mbps speeds with 750GB FUP limit. The ACT Gold plan comes with 100 Mbps speeds and 1500GB or 1.5TB FUP limit, whereas the ACT Diamond plan ships with 150 Mbps speeds and 3.5TB or 3000GB FUP limit. As noted, the ACT Diamond broadband plan also offers Rs 100 cashback on Netflix subscription every month.

Do make a note that the prices mentioned above are exclusive of taxes, so an additional 18% charges will be added to the final bill.

ACT Fibernet has done a decent job in revising the broadband plans across more than ten cities. While the company wasn’t able to match JioFiber or Airtel Xstream Fiber, the revised plans in cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Chennai are pretty decent for the asking price. For example, we are now getting a 125 Mbps broadband plan at Rs 1075 per month in Hyderabad.

One area where ACT Fibernet is lagging behind the competition is in the OTT subscriptions aspect. The broadband plans from JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber come bundled with free OTT service subscriptions like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP and more. ACT Fibernet isn’t going after JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber on these fronts.

Reliance Jio has silently introduced three new All-in-One plans for JioPhone users. Jio already has All-in-One plans, but the newly introduced ones come with 336 days validity, which in the telco’s words are annual plans. The three new plans in question are Rs 1,001, Rs 1,301 and Rs 1,501. With the new plans, Jio is offering up to a whopping 504GB of data. These new annual All-in-One plans come in really handy for the users who don’t want to recharge every month. All the three new plans offer unlimited Jio to Jio voice calling but the company continues to limit voice calling to other numbers. Jio’ subscriber additions slowed down last quarter which could be the reason behind launching these long-term plans for JioPhone users.

JioPhone Annual All-in-One Plans: Everything You Need to Know

The first plan introduced by Reliance Jio is the Rs 1,001 All-in-One pack. It offers a user 49GB of 4G data and there’s a daily data limit of 150MB. On top of that, users also get unlimited Jio to Jio voice calling; As mentioned above, the telco is capping the off-net voice calling to 12000 minutes for the entire validity period of 336 days. JioPhone users recharging this plan also get 100 SMSes per day.

Next on the list, we have the Rs 1,301 All-in-One JioPhone plan. It offers a total of 164GB 4G data benefit spread across 500MB per day for 336 days. It is the same Rs 125 All-in-One that’s available for JioPhone users for a long time. If a customer recharges the Rs 125 plan for 12 months, the cost will be Rs 1,500. The newly launched plan costs Rs 199 less which is a good proportion. The plan also ships with 100 SMSes per day, unlimited Jio to Jio voice calls and 12000 non-Jio minutes for 336 days.

Lastly, we have the Rs 1,501 JioPhone All-in-One plan; It comes with 1.5GB data per day which totals at 504GB for 336 days. There are other benefits like unlimited voice calling, 100 SMSes per day and 12,000 non-Jio FUP minutes.

Are you a JioPhone user? If yes, will you recharge these new plans? Let us know by commenting below.

BSNL Launches 3 New Postpaid Plans With Data Rollover Facility and Family Add-Ons

Posted: 04 Nov 2020 05:35 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-new-postpaid-plans-launch-2020/308414/, BSNL Launches 3 New Postpaid Plans With Data Rollover Facility and Family Add-Ons

BSNL is finally stepping up the game in the postpaid segment. The government-owned PSU is launching new plans on December 1, 2020, taking on the new JioFiber postpaid plans. BSNL’s new postpaid plans start at Rs 199 and the new launches include Rs 798 and Rs 999. The telco will also remove the existing postpaid plans of Rs 99, Rs 225, Rs 325, Rs 799 and Rs 1125 once the new plans become effective next month. The Rs 199 postpaid plan from BSNL will surely attract a lot of consumers and the company is adding additional benefits like data rollover and family add-ons to match rivals. We have seen BSNL offering a single postpaid plan with data rollover facility until now and that too in only Kolkata circle. However, the new postpaid plans will be effective across all the circles where BSNL is operating.

BSNL Rs 199, Rs 798 and Rs 999 Postpaid Plans Detailed

Starting with the Rs 199 postpaid plan, BSNL will offer 25GB of data with rollover up to 75GB, unlimited on-net voice calling, 300 minutes of off-net minutes and 100 SMSes per day for one rental period. Sadly, it won’t offer family add-ons which is an expected thing for the asking price.

Moving on to the Rs 798 postpaid plan, this will probably attract a lot of users. The telco will provide unlimited voice calling to any network, 50GB data per month with rollover up to 150GB, 100 SMSes per day and two-family add-on connections. Do make a note that the add-on connections will get the same benefits as the primary connection. For example, the add-on connection can make unlimited voice calls to any network within India, 50GB data per month and 100 SMSes per day, similar to the primary connection.

Lastly, we have the Rs 999 postpaid plan with 75GB data benefit and rollover up to 225GB, unlimited voice calling, 100 SMSes per day and three family add-ons. Similar to the Rs 798 postpaid plan, the add-on connections on Rs 999 postpaid plan also offers independent benefits.

As for other details, the voice calls will be capped to 250 minutes per day, which is underwhelming. BSNL also revised the Rs 525 postpaid plan with one family add-on connection benefit added. This news is reported by Keralatelecom and individually verified by TelecomTalk.

More details regarding the postpaid plans like OTT subscriptions are expected to be announced very soon by BSNL.
