Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has just announced the arrival of India's first satellite-based narrowband-IoT (Internet of Things). The state-run telco has announced the service in partnership with Skylotech India. With this service, BSNL seeks to honour the vision of Narendra Modi's truly digital India. The service will be initially provided with the target to help farmers, fishermen, construction, mining and logistics enterprises. With the help of this new solution, India will be able to access a seamless network of connectivity with all the unconnected machines and IoT devices — more details on the story ahead. BSNL to Provide PAN-India Coverage With the Help of Satellite Ground InfrastructureIn a release shared by BSNL, the telco has claimed that it will provide the new 'Made in India' solution in partnership with Skylo all over India with the help of its already established satellite ground infrastructure. The service from the telco will even cover the Indian seas. BSNL has said that the coverage will be so vast that no corner or dark spot of India will be left out. Every part of the country will have equal access to the seamless connectivity that narrowband-IoT brings. Shri P.K.Purwar, CMD of BSNL, said, "The solution is in line with BSNL's vision to leverage technology to provide affordable and innovative telecom services and products across customers segments". One of the key things that Purwar said was that Skylo would also contribute in providing critical data to the logistics sector of the country so that the effective distribution of COVID-19 vaccines can be ensured. The announcement from BSNL comes at a perfect time looking at the ongoing Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2020. The new technology solution introduced by BSNL is in line with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and NITI Aayog's vision of bringing IoT connectivity to enhance India's core sectors. The solution has already been tested successfully with Indian Railways and a few more platforms and objects. Vivek Banzal, Director (CFA) BSNL Board said, "Successful POCs have already been conducted by BSNL and Skylo in India and we will soon approach various user groups before the New Year 2021 begins." | Put All the Available 5G Spectrum in Auction to Avoid Scarcity: Trai Secretary Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/5g-spectrum-in-auction-trai-secretary/315982/, Put All the Available 5G Spectrum in Auction to Avoid Scarcity: Trai Secretary
Addressing the nation at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2020, SK Gupta, Secretary of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said that the telecom department needs to ensure adequate availability of 5G spectrum at an affordable price for the telcos. This is so that Indian telecom service providers (TSPs) can test 5G for India specific use cases as soon as possible. Gupta said that he is aware of the concerns of the service providers related to high pricing of the 5G spectrum — more details on the story ahead. Make 5G Spectrum Available for Telcos at an Affordable CostAs per an ET Telecom report, Gupta in his note said that Trai has been recommending to put all the available 5G spectrum into the auction so that any possibility of artificial scarcity of spectrum dies. Adding to this, he said that sharing and trading of the spectrum should be encouraged so that the best possible use of it is possible. Gupta said that Trai has done everything in its power to keep the price of the spectrum as reasonable as possible for the telcos. What's interesting to note here is that the Trai has left the final reviewing and decision of 5G spectrum price on the hands of the government. The regulator has suggested to price a unit of spectrum in the 3300-3600 MHz bands Rs 492 crore. This figure doesn't seem like Trai actually putting too many efforts on reducing the price of the spectrum. Telecom operators have already shown their disinterest on the price suggested by Trai. Gupta further said that the regulatory body has already suggested spectrum allocation for the telcos so that they can move ahead with the trials. The only wait is for the operators to take the lead and start testing 5G for India specific use cases. He also laid stress on the massive need for fiberisation activity in India. Gupta said that currently, only 30% of the Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in the country have optical fibre connectivity. This needs to be expanded to more stations across India as soon as possible. | Analyst Expects Airtel to Soon Hike Tariffs Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/analyst-expects-airtel-to-soon-hike-tariffs/315976/, Analyst Expects Airtel to Soon Hike Tariffs
Bharti Airtel, the second largest wireless operator in India is soon expected to hike tariffs, Motilal Oswal said in a report on Wednesday. The firm said that the tariff hike "which looked uncertain" in the past six to nine month period "has now started to look imminent" due to the "weakening of industry subscriber growth." However, Motilal Oswal highlighted that the earnings outlook of Airtel "remains strong" due to the "steady 4G subscriber additions." The steady increase in 4G subscribers is said to result in 2% to 3% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) average revenue per user (ARPU) growth for Airtel. Motilal Oswal Expects 15% to 20% Increase in TariffsThe Telecom Subscription Data for the period ended September 30, 2020, as released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) highlights that Airtel gained over 3.7 million users in September. The second largest wireless operator in India gained 10 million users in the last three months after registering a cumulative loss of 12.4 million users during the lockdown. Airtel is now said to have 316 million active users as on September 30, 2020, while Reliance Jio is ahead with 318 million active users. Motilal Oswal said that the recent hikes in Vodafone Idea postpaid plans "creates a positive environment" for the sector. "Our recent interactions with industry experts indicate a potential price hike of 15-20% in the next two months," Motilal Oswal said in its report. The firm said that Vodafone Idea "could take the lead" in further hiking its tariffs due to multiple factors such as "reducing subscriber growth, weak liquidity position and requirement for fund raising." "Bharti [Airtel] has indicated it may follow tariff hikes by its peers," Motilal Oswal said in its report. "RJio's may follow its peers by maintaining its discount intact." Crucially, the firm highlighted that Reliance Jio "may restrain" from making a first move on tariff hikes. Motilal Oswal said the largest wireless operator in India witnessed a large number of users who no longer used its services post the last tariff hikes in December, 2019. Motilal Oswal Says Xstream Fiber Services Gaining TractionMeanwhile, the firm highlighted that the partnership between Airtel and local cable operators (LCO) is "gaining traction" and that Airtel should witness an increase in Xstream Fiber user base in the upcoming quarters. Airtel in its second quarter report for the period ended September 30, 2020, highlighted that the LCO model was live across 48 cities in India. Motilal Oswal said that Airtel initially "restricted its target to reaching the top 100 cities" with its Xstream Fiber services due to the "high investment and low business viability." "However, the low investment requirement in the LCO model allows it to expand to additional cities," Motilal Oswal said in its report. "It has thus increased its target market to 150 cities. RJio has a mammoth target to reach 1,600 cities. However, its current subscriber base of a mere ~1m explains that its focus is limited to top cities." | OneWeb Ready to Fight Like Hell in Global Broadband Market by 2022: Sunil Mittal Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/oneweb-sunil-mittal-global-broadband-market/315960/, OneWeb Ready to Fight Like Hell in Global Broadband Market by 2022: Sunil Mittal
Founder of Bharti Airtel and Indian billionaire, Sunil Mittal has said that 'OneWeb', a satellite broadband company which Bharti Global holds a stake of will be providing satellite internet services globally by 2022. For the unaware, Mittal had rescued the company along with the UK government by pouring in $500 million each for a 45% stake to keep it from going bankrupt earlier this year. Now as per a report from Mint, in a bold statement, the business tycoon has said that OneWeb will be able to provide broadband internet services around the world in the next 18 months, i.e., by 2022 — more on the story ahead. OneWeb to Compete Against Giant Corporations for Providing Broadband ServicesOneWeb provides satellite broadband connection to the users. With the company going global in the next 18 months, it will be up against two of the biggest companies in the world namely Space Exploration Technologies Corporation founded by Elon Musk and Amazon founded by Jeff Bezos. Mittal in his statement at the conference held by the United Nations said that by the month of May or June in 2022, OneWeb will cover the entire planet with the constellation of its satellites. It is worth noting that Elon Musk is also ready to launch multiple SpaceX rockets into space for building his vision of Starlink constellation. His company is already testing the service with its potential customers. But there will be one big difference between the services of OneWeb and Starlink initially. It will be that OneWeb will release its satellites covering the entire planet, whereas Musk isn't going down that route, for now at least. Mittal said that OneWeb is ready to fight like hell in the marketplace to stay at the top. He further said that the future generation of OneWeb satellites will also be able to provide global positioning capabilities. As of now, 74 satellites out of the planned 648 are already in the orbit of the Earth providing users living in multiple locations with satellite internet services. The company seeks more funding to launch further satellites. Original article: OneWeb Ready to Fight Like Hell in Global Broadband Market by 2022: Sunil Mittal ©2020 TelecomTalk. | Satellite Internet, Do You Need it? Everything to Know! Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:16 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/satellite-internet-pros-cons-who-needs/315936/, Satellite Internet, Do You Need it? Everything to Know!
Connectivity through the internet isn't an 'option' anymore. It is essential for everyone looking to do the most basic of things such as paying electricity bills, booking travel, ordering groceries, food, texting colleagues and people you love, and more. But for that, a reliable internet connection is of utmost importance. There are multiple ways of getting an internet connection. One such way is through satellite internet. Satellite internet can help you go online at any time and from any place you want. Keep reading ahead to find out more about it. What is Satellite Internet? In simple words, satellite internet means that the internet service provider (ISP) is sending the data signals to the satellite present in space which then bounces back to a dish in your house or any other receptor. Traditionally, the internet is provided with the help of cables. But with satellite internet, the need for cables is removed. You can always rely on the satellite internet to keep you online. But it isn't all good; there is some good to it and some bad as well. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of satellite internet for determining, which people need it. Pros of Satellite InternetOne of the biggest pros of satellite internet is that it is available everywhere. Cable internet connections aren't portable. But since satellite internet doesn't depend on cables, wherever the receptors of the signals are, there will be satellite internet present. Speed of satellite internet has grown very much in the last few years. As per a report, some satellite internet providers have already started offering 25 Mbps download speed to the users. Another thing that is good about a satellite internet connection is that in the case of natural disasters, the service providers can get it back online in a jiffy. It is not the same with cable internet connections because, during natural calamities, internet cables can get severely damaged. Cons of Satellite InternetWhile there is a lot of good about the satellite internet, there is also some bad. People who want a high-speed internet connection, satellite internet can be a little disappointing for them. Adding to this, the caps or fair usage policy (FUP) limits on data are very rigid. The next thing that is not so good about satellite internet is its cost. Even though it provides lesser speeds than the cable internet, it is more expensive in most of the cases. Also, there is high latency on the internet connection, so only the most basic things can be done through it. Online gaming and 4K streaming is still a distant dream when it comes to satellite internet. One of the biggest cons of the satellite internet is that it doesn't support Virtual Private Networks (VPN). So Who Really Needs Satellite Internet? It is people living in rural areas which require satellite internet the most. In urban areas, people have the option to go with a wired internet connection as it is super fast, but it is not the same with people living in rural areas. Since being connected to the world through internet is very important, people living in rural areas can benefit from satellite internet as it will be there in service for them every hour of the day, week, and year. Also, people in military camped in hilly regions where the cables can't be installed; satellite internet is an excellent choice. Original article: Satellite Internet, Do You Need it? | Reliance Jio and Realme Working Towards Reducing Prices of 4G Devices and Other Connected Devices Posted: 09 Dec 2020 08:16 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-realme-4g-devices-price/315908/, Reliance Jio and Realme Working Towards Reducing Prices of 4G Devices and Other Connected Devices
Telecom operator, Reliance Jio confirmed that it is working with Realme and other organisations to bring down the prices of 4G devices and other connected devices. This news is confirmed by Reliance Jio’s president for devices and mobility, Sunil Dutt, at the India Mobile Congress 2020. In the past, we have seen telecom operators working with Indian smartphone companies like Celkon, Karbonn, etc., to lower the prices of entry-level devices. However, that strategy did not work for the telcos and device manufacturers alike. It seems like telcos are looking to try the same strategy once again, but this time, they are going with the Chinese brands. Jio-Realme Partnership: What to Expect?Carrier tie-ups are very popular in western countries, however, that isn’t the case in India. Reliance Jio tried to offer a buyback scheme on iPhones in the past, but again, it was a one-time tryout from the company. Speaking with PTI during IMC 2020, Sunil Dutt of Reliance Jio said there’s a requirement to provide affordable devices that will allow the 2G users to get a 4G or 5G handset. “Reliance as an organisation…we have done in the past for 4G where benefits of connectivity were made far more affordable through JioPhones. On the other 4G devices, we are working with Realme and other organisations to try and make devices more affordable for people,” Dutt said according to PTI. Realme started operations back in 2018 and has similar strategy to that of Reliance Jio. Furthermore, the president added Jio is not only looking at the mobile phone segment but also working on to bring other connected devices at affordable prices. At the IMC 2020, Reliance Jio said it is looking to launch 5G services in the second half of 2021. Jio also stressed how important is 5G for India and asked the government to price the spectrum reasonably. Besides Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are also said to be working hard to establish partnerships with smartphone brands to provide bundled handsets.
