State-run BSNL has submitted a bank guarantee of Rs 250 crore to the DoT after which the latter extended its Unified License (UL) for the next 20 years. The extension means BSNL will now be able to provide seamless services across the 20 circles where it has operations. Unified License is known as the allocation of the spectrum that is delinked from the licenses and has to be obtained separately as per the prescribed procedure. At present, spectrum in 800/900/1800/2100/2300/2500 MHz band is allocated through the bidding process. The new Unified License (UL) agreement with BSNL was signed on December 10 by the DoT, and it will be valid for 20 years.

DoT Extends BSNL’s Unified License by Another 20 Years

The agreement signed between both the parties says “license shall be valid for a period of 20 years from the effective date of this license unless revoked for reasons specified elsewhere in the document.” This news is reported by ET Telecom. Furthermore, the report added the license had been granted to BSNL with effect from February 29, 2020. Since March this year, BSNL has been offering services on an ‘ad-hoc basis.’

As part of this license extension, BSNL can now continue providing services such as voice telephony, national long distance (NLD), international long distance (ISD), very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) CGU, and the Public Mobile Radio Trunking Services (PMRTS) services. “The license hereby agrees and unequivocally undertakes to fully comply with all terms and conditions stipulated in this license agreement and without any deviation or reservations of any kind,” the document further says.

BSNL can now provide 2G, 3G and 4G services in the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz spectrum bands across 20 telecom circles. In other news, BSNL is also said to offer pan-India services soon as MTNL’s license is expiring on January 10, 2021. However, the DoT will provide the additional license to BSNL for the Mumbai and Delhi circles.

Indian Telecom Operators Moved Much Faster to Mitigate Their Exposure to Huawei

telecom-operators-moved-faster-mitigate-exposure-huawei
Ciena, an American company engaged in telecommunications networking equipment and software services on Thursday said that the Indian telecom operators "moved much faster" in reducing their exposure to Huawei. The development was shared by Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena in the fourth quarter earnings call. Smith said that the telecom operators in India have 25% to 30% of their total infrastructure with Huawei. However, Smith said that the Indian telecom operators "more aggressively" have been trying to reduce their exposure to Huawei "than the European carriers."

Ciena Bullish on the Indian Market

The CEO of Ciena said that the company has already witnessed the telecom operators in India "really mitigate their exposure to Huawei" with Ciena winning "some of that business."

"And then there’s really sort of two to three carriers there," Smith said in the fourth quarter earnings call. "The third carrier is very dependent on Huawei, and they’re all making plans to migrate away from that. Always takes longer than you think, but we’re actually quite bullish around the India market as we move forward into the second half of 2021 and into 2022."

Smith said that Ciena in the past few quarters "won business specifically around the Huawei replacement" but that the company has not "deployed" its products.

"We’ve seen some of that migration away from Huawei in India more aggressively than we’ve seen it in Europe," Smith said in the fourth quarter earnings call. "It’s moving and decisions are being made now by all of these carriers around mitigating their exposure to Huawei. Some have more exposure than others, but those decisions are being made."

Huawei Situation Not a "New Dynamic" to Ciena

The company on Thursday reported US$828.5 million revenue in its fourth quarter for the period ended October 31, 2020, as compared to US$968 million in the 2019 fourth quarter. Ciena recorded US$65 million as net income in its 2020 fiscal fourth quarter as compared to US$80.3 million in the same period in the previous year.

In January, 2020, Ciena emerged as the top vendor in the Voice and Data' s 24th annual India Telecom Industry survey. The company is said to have clinched the position in terms of market share by revenue in the Open Networking and Converged Networks segment.

Smith said that the Indian telecom market "has been obviously very challenging" in the past 18 months due to the "economic issues" along with the "taxation of the service providers."

"And then the impact of COVID, I think, we’ve been disproportionately affected on their – rolling out their new network," Smith said in the fourth quarter earnings call. "So it’s been a very down market for the last sort of couple of years."

However, Smith said that the situation involving Huawei where the operators around the world are trying to reduce their exposure to the Chinese vendor "has been in play for a couple of years now."

"I understand that it’s getting a lot of geopolitical attention and a lot of publicity, but this is not particularly a new dynamic to us," Smith said in the fourth quarter earnings call.

The CEO of Ciena also highlighted that the European telecom operators have got "massive amounts" of Huawei equipment installed that are "integrated into all of their back-office systems."

"It’s very expensive for these carriers to make those kinds of wholesale moves, and the operational issues associated with that are very large," Smith said in the fourth quarter earnings call. "It’s a great tailwind and will happen we think over a period of time, but not as fast as folks will think, possibly with the exception of India."

Tariff Hike to help Telcos Get About 20% Higher APRU: ICICI Securities

tariff-hike-to-help-telcos-icici-securitise

ICICI Securities through a report said that the next round of tariff hikes for the telecom industry could come as early as March 2021. In the same report, ICICI Securities also mentioned that it would help telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) grow their average revenue per user (ARPU) by up to 20% in the FY22. Last year, during the same time as now, tariff hikes by up to 25% to 40% were implemented by the telecom operators of the country. Another round of hikes was expected to take place in CY20, but because of the pandemic and slowdown of the economy, that didn't happen.

Telecom Operators Want Data Tariffs to Go Up by 5 to 9 Times

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) floated a consultation paper seeking to understand the floor prices that should be set on telecom services. To this, the operators said that the current data prices should go up by 5 to 9 times. Trai is yet to announce a final verdict on this.

As per ET Telecom, ICICI Securities in its report said that VIL should be the first company in India to increase the tariffs, what the company is waiting for is clarity on the floor prices to be set by Trai. It further said that the tariff hikes would come by March 2021.

After the tariff hikes, ICICI Securities estimates that the ARPU for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea would grow by 20%. The brokerage firm believes that Vi requires at least a 50% jump on its tariffs to be able to reach the breakeven line in FY23 and be looked at as a going concern.

One thing to remember here is that even after the tariff hikes last year, telcos couldn't really benefit much. It is because of the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) case verdict that came in earlier this year asking telcos to pay thousands of crores as outstanding AGR dues in the next 10 years.

Now another case on whether the telcos need to pay the AGR dues advance before March 31, 2021, is going on. If the telcos lose this one, it will further the negative impact on the telecom industry.

Reliance JioFiber is slowly gaining momentum in the country as the recent Trai subscription data for September 2020 said the ISP managed to add more than 3 lakh new users. As we all know, all the JioFiber broadband plans come bundled with a free Wi-Fi router. Even the JioFiber plan of Rs 399 offers a free router to the customers. While the bundled JioFiber router is more than sufficient for several users, some users will install the connection with their router to enjoy better speeds and connection range. Reliance Jio is offering a ‘JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh‘ to the JioFiber users. As the name of the product itself suggests, the JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh extends your connectivity range. This device comes in handy for users who are suffering from poor Wi-Fi connectivity with the bundled JioFiber router.

JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh: Features and Technical Specifications

The JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh connects to the JioFiber Home Gateway or the JioFiber router or another JioExtender over Wi-Fi or ethernet connectivity. These JioExtenders connect in a chain formation to extend Wi-Fi coverage to the remotest corners of your home. Reliance Jio says the JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh is powered by Wi-Fi EasyMesh Technology to provide uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity by eliminating dark zones. Additionally, it is said the device detects your device’s bandwidth requirement and smartly manages traffic and connectivity.

Technical specifications of the product include 110mm x 110mm x 32mm dimensions, 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band concurrent connectivity, internal Wi-Fi antennas, data rates of up to 300 Mbps on 2.4GHz and 867 Mbps on 5GHz band. The device has only one RJ45 Ethernet port and it can be connected to a JioFiber router in both wired and wireless methods.

JioExtender Wi-Fi Mesh: How to Setup
