dth-or-cable-tv-what-to-choose

Are you looking to get a new TV connection and are you confused about which type of connection you should go with? Well, most of your queries will be sorted after reading this, so make sure you stick till the end. There are two types of TV connections you can get in India, one is Direct-to-Home (DTH), and the other is cable TV. Both can provide you with entertaining content and your favourite channels, but they differ a lot from each other. Please keep reading to find out the differences between the two and understanding which one is better for you.

DTH vs Cable TV: All the Differences You Should Know About

First of all, cable TV is a much older technology, and it was how people all over the world viewed content on television before the arrival of DTH. Even though it is an old technology, it has its own advantages.

The first thing that needs to be considered is the pricing of the two TV services. Cable TV connection is much cheaper when compared with the DTH. Because with DTH, there is a need for Set-Top Box (STB) and then there are other ancillary charges included as well. But with cable TV, there is no need for a Set-Top Box and the other charges are also almost not there.

During rain where there are clouds all over the sky, the dish antenna installed at the home or office won't be able to get signals. This is where cable TV gets another advantage. Because with cables, there is no worry about the kind of weather there is outside. Even during storms, if the cables are not damaged, the broadcasting will keep working.

As for when the transmission and quality of viewing are concerned, the cable TV operators use analogue transmissions while the DTH operators use digital transmission. Digital transmission is the best way to ensure that the viewers can get the content in the highest quality possible. Most of the DTH operators today also offer HD and 4K TV STBs which the cable operators don't.

One of the biggest factors to consider here is the kind of customer service that is provided with either of the connections. With cable TV, usually, the operators are local, and they don't have a huge customer support team to help people all day with their problem. Due to this, sometimes the users have to wait for long periods before the operator fixes their problem.

But with a DTH connection, there is always a dedicated customer support team behind it. DTH operators such as Airtel Digital TV, Tata Sky, Dish TV, and D2h have changed the landscape of TV industry in India.

Also in terms of availability, DTH connections can be made available in the most remote places of the country because all that is required is a clear sky for the signals to reach the dish. But with cable TV connections, services can only be provided in a limited range of area.

Another thing which can make a huge difference in your purchasing decision is whether or not you want a Smart TV. Because nowadays, a DTH connection can be bought with an Android Box, which cable TV operators don’t offer.

what-tata-sky-binge-service-Benefit

Over-the-top (OTT) content platforms have witnessed a massive surge in demand over the last 12 months or so. Indians are ready to pay even up to Rs 400 every month for getting subscriptions of multiple OTT platforms. Tata Sky, the largest Direct-to-Home (DTH) operator of the country doesn't want to let the opportunity of benefitting from this demand go by. It offers not only the Tata Sky Binge+ Set-Top Box (STB) but also a Binge service. So what is Tata Sky Binge service and how you can benefit from it? Keep reading ahead to find out.

Tata Sky Binge Service

For the unaware, Tata Sky Binge service is completely different from Tata Sky Binge+. The 'Binge+' is an STB service, and the 'Binge' is a bundled OTT service from Tata Sky.

The Tata Sky Binge service enables users to stream through a library of OTT content from multiple platforms under a single subscription. The DTH operator offers an Amazon Fire TV Stick – Tata Sky edition to the users purchasing this service which comes at no additional cost to the service. There is even no subscription cost for the users in the first 30 days of purchasing the Binge service.

But once the first 30 days are over, the user will have to pay Tata Sky a monthly subscription fee of Rs 299 to continue getting the Binge service.

What's So Good About Tata Sky Binge Service?

The good thing about Tata Sky Binge service is that it offers subscriptions of multiple OTT platforms against a single charge of Rs 299 per month. For the unaware, with Tata Sky Binge service, users get OTT subscriptions of over 10 different platforms.

These platforms include Disney+ Hotstar Premium, SonyLIV, ZEE5, Voot Kids, Voot Select, Eros Now, ShemarooMe, SunNxt, Hungama Play, and CurisotyStream.

If a user were to go and get the subscription of all these platforms individually for a month or even a year altogether, it would become way too expensive. But with Rs 299 per month, this is a great deal for Tata Sky Binge customers.

In addition to all the above-mentioned platforms, Binge service users also get a free subscription of Amazon Prime Video for three months. After the three months are over, the users will have to pay Rs 129 in addition to Amazon Prime Video per month.

Also, users who purchase a new Tata Sky Binge+ STB, they get the Binge service absolutely free for up to 6 months. They also get the Amazon Prime Video free for the first three months.

What's great about the Binge service from Tata Sky is that more and more OTT platforms are being clubbed by the DTH operator under the service so that the users can access a wide library of content.

Bharti Airtel Narrows the Gap With Reliance Jio on Active Users Front

The race between telcos to get the most number of subscribers is at an all-time high. The economy of India is in the path towards completely digitising, and the telecom operators don't want to miss out on the chance to benefit from it. That is why every telco is focusing on adding as many subscribers as it can by providing lucrative new offers and good customer service to the users. One telco, however, which has been continuously losing on subscribers is Vodafone Idea (Vi). But Vi's loss is an opportunity to grow for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, and it seems like Airtel has benefitted the most from Vi's loss — more details on the story ahead.

Jio Leads the Race on Overall Subscriber Additions; Airtel Gains More Active Users

As mentioned above, Airtel seemed to gain the most from Vi's losses, but to conclude it that way would be a little shortsighted. This is because, in terms of overall new subscriber additions, Jio has been way ahead of Airtel.

However, Airtel has gained quite a few points when it comes to active users share in the market. Reliance Jio's active user share in the market was reported to be 33.2% in September (318 million users). On the other hand, Bharti Airtel had active users share of 33% in the same month (316 million users).

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had reported that Jio's total active subscriber base stood at 79% as compared to Airtel's 97%. So even though Jio is adding more number of subscribers, Airtel seems to be closing in on the gap of active users share in the overall market.

Whereas Vi is only losing subscribers every month that goes by. A lot of subscribers from Vi are going towards Airtel since the telco has been able to maintain its 'premium' image in the market.

Everything considered Jio is still ahead of Airtel and Vi in terms of revenue generation. Even though Airtel has a higher average revenue per user (ARPU) than Jio, the latter seems to be doing just better.

It is worth noting that Jio has plans for launching new affordable 4G smartphones with Google very soon, that will allow the telco to be more flexible and innovative with its telecom offers related to the smartphone. This, in turn, might give another boost to Jio in the market.

Whether or not Airtel will leave behind Jio in the active users share front in the overall market, that only time can tell.
