Is 5G Going to Replace Broadband Internet? Let’s Talk

is-5g-going-to-replace-broadband-internet

5G is going to be all over the world, including India very soon. It is the next generation of technology which will support faster and higher connectivity. As we have established in one of our reports earlier, 5G won't be as harmful as people are speculating it to be. The 5G frequency bands fall under the non-ionising range, which means it is safe to be deployed. While 5G is slowly rolling out around the world, there is a question that begs to be answered, will it replace high-speed broadband internet connections?

Will 5G Take Over the Broadband Internet World?

First of all, it is important to understand the differences between the two to answer whether or not that will happen. 5G is the next-generation cellular connectivity platform which will help users in getting high-speed internet. In contrast, broadband is a cable or fibre internet connection which provides high-speed internet as well.

The basic difference between the two is the range of connectivity. Wherever 5G towers are, 5G connectivity will be available. But with broadband connections, they are available within a tiny and limited area so you can't depend on them if you are travelling.

Broadband connections are good for people who are doing most of their work sitting from their homes or offices. But if you are travelling a lot and need high-speed internet, 5G would be an ideal option.

So while people can get both the connections, will broadband really be necessary when 5G can provide high-speed internet anyway? Many would argue that since the broadband internet connection is cabled, there would be lesser network congestion. Thus it would be more reliable for achieving a stable internet experience.

But 5G is also going to do the same thing. For the unaware, 5G will be built using a very high-frequency spectrum and high bandwidth, which would mean that there would be much lesser network congestion than what users see with 4G. More and more people can use 5G in the same area, and there should be no dramatic effect on the speed that a user is getting.

While 5G would be the strongest cellular network world has ever seen, it won't just come and straightaway replace broadband internet. Broadband internet serves its own purpose and provides speeds up to 1 Gbps and more.

What are your thoughts on this?

With the launch of aggressive broadband plans from Reliance Jio under the JioFiber brand, ACT Fibernet is left with no other option other than launching competitive plans. In September and October, we saw ACT Fibernet revising its broadband plans in almost every city it is operating. Alongside doubling the FUP limit, the company also increased speed limits in select cities. In Hyderabad, ACT Fibernet now has a 125 Mbps broadband plan priced at Rs 1,075, however, customers can get it for a lower price by opting for the long-term option. Similar to the 125 Mbps plan, ACT Fibernet’s other broadband plans of Rs 700 and Rs 1,325 can also be purchased in long-term option for a reduced price.

ACT Fibernet 125 Mbps Broadband Plan: How to Get It for Lesser Price?

ACT Fibernet’s broadband plans differ with almost every city, but the long-term plans in every city come at a discounted rate. In this article, we shall talk about the broadband plans in Hyderabad. The A-Max 1075, which is probably the best offering in the city, offers 125 Mbps download & upload speeds, 2000GB or 2TB broadband data and 3 Mbps FUP speed.

The A-Max 1075 plan costs Rs 1,075 (taxes extra) per month. However, ACT Fibernet is charging an effective price of Rs 833 per month on six months subscription, whereas the 12 months subscription of A-Max 1075 comes at a price of Rs 896 per month. Do make a note that the company will charge the entire amount of long-term subscription at one go.

Similarly, the Rs 1,325 broadband plan aka A-Max 1325 offers 200 Mbps speeds, 3000GB or 3TB FUP limit and 3 Mbps after FUP speeds. The effective price per month of this plan if a customer chooses it for six months is Rs 1,083, and for 12 months, it is Rs 1,104.

Almost all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are providing additional discounts on long-term plans. For example, Airtel Xstream Fiber broadband plans offer 10% discount on six months subscription and 15% discount on annual plans. With these long-term options, companies are looking to lock the customers for a longer duration. At the same time, long-term plans are a good option for customers to retain the ARPU (Average Revenue per User).

Will you choose a long-term broadband plan or go with a monthly subscription? Let us know in the comments section below.

Tata Sky continues to add new features to its website and mobile app alongside extending its market share lead. Tata Sky has added a new feature to its website that allows new customers to purchase Set-Top Box bundled with ‘best-selling’ combo plan in a particular region. The feature doesn’t sound like a major one, however, it comes in handy for the new customers who want to simplify their purchase experience. New Tata Sky users can select any best-selling combo plan the DTH operator suggests on its website. The company is suggesting these best-selling combo packs based on the region (users are supposed to enter their pin code). On top of that, Tata Sky is also suggesting combo plans such as ‘limited period offer’ and ‘most popular.’

Tata Sky Suggesting Best-Selling Plans Based on the Region

If a customer goes to Tata Sky’s website and chooses the ‘New Connection’ option, the DTH operator asks for the PIN code. The company is asking for the PIN code to suggest the best-selling combo plans in your region. For example, when I enter my PIN code of 500068, the company is suggesting the Telugu combo packs with all the STBs it is offering at the moment. Tata Sky listed a ‘Limited Period Offer’ for Tata Sky Binge+ in my region which is bundled with Telugu Basic HD pack that offers 58 popular regional channels. The price is listed as Rs 3,261.55. Do make a note that NCF charges of Rs 153 will be applicable on top. It also suggested a ‘Most Popular’ option for Tata Sky HD Set-Top Box with the same Telugu Basic HD pack on top and the charges would be Rs 1,761.55.

There are three more options suggested by Tata Sky. For every PIN code I entered, Tata Sky suggested five combo packs bundled with Binge+ and HD Set-Top Box.

This feature comes in handy to the users as it removes the hassle for them of choosing the channel pack. New Tata Sky users will have to choose a channel pack while purchasing a new connection.

Tata Sky is currently running up to Rs 400 discount offer on STBs. The Tata Sky Binge+ that’s available at Rs 2,999 with free six months Tata Sky Binge subscription comes with Rs 200 discount if a customer chooses the connection online. The Tata Sky HD Set-Top Box is also available with Rs 150 discount that brings the price to Rs 1,349.
