Social media giant Facebook is looking to have a major impact in India through its partnership with Reliance Jio. At the first Facebook Fuel for India 2020 event, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said its collaboration with Jio would help small businesses (SMBs) grow in the country. Earlier this year, Facebook announced an investment of Rs 43,574 crore in Jio Platforms for a stake purchase of 9.99%. Zuckerberg added that the main goal of Facebook is serving SMBs and India has over 60 million SMBs to date. With COVID-19 having a major impact on SMBs, Reliance Jio and Facebook are looking to support them. Furthermore, the Facebook CEO added WhatsApp Pay has a lot of potential in the country and will make sure to take the service deeper. Reliance Jio and Facebook to Work on Helping SMBs
He also added that the partnership with Jio Platforms would help grow the SMBs. A lot of SMBs faced issues during the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting SMBs has become more important, he further added. Furthermore, Zuckerberg said the COVID-19 is accelerating SMBs to go digital from physical storefronts. “Through our partnership (Jio Platforms and Facebook), we will become a value creation platform for our customers and small businesses, giving them a chance to digitise and be at par with anybody else in the world,” said, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries. Facebook CEO Terms India as a Special CountryAt the same event, the Facebook CEO also termed India as a ‘special country’ that has a remarkable entrepreneurship culture. Facebook is looking to push WhatsApp Pay deeper in the country. For the unaware, WhatsApp Pay received NPCI nod last month and it is currently being rolled to all the 400 million WhatsApp users in the country. “We just launched WhatsApp payments in India last month — now you can send money to your friends and family through WhatsApp, as easily as sending a message. That was possible because of the UPI system that has been built in India,” Zuckerberg said. WhatsApp Pay works on UPI which has changed the landscape of India’s digital payment sector. | ATC to Build 4000 Towers in India with Majority for Airtel Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/atc-build-4000-towers-india-majority-airtel/317286/, ATC to Build 4000 Towers in India with Majority for Airtel
Upcoming Tariff Hikes to Aid Vodafone IdeaAirtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Reliance Jio are said to be major telecom operators to be engaged with ATC in India. "We expect that they'll do that [tariff hikes] again here in some point in the next quarter or so," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. "And that would provide additional cash flow to all of the wireless businesses and importantly into Voda-Idea, so that would be a constructive step forward." Smith said that the Indian telecom market was "really challenging" over the past couple of years due to multiple reasons including the consolidation of wireless carriers. The ATC CFO said that the consolidation happened "quicker" than what the company anticipated but that from a "structure standpoint" the Indian telecom market now "looks very much like the US." Similar to "other developed markets around the world," Smith said that the Indian telecom market now has "three to four primary wireless carriers" with nationwide networks catering to the Indian users. "The other headwind is the issue of the adjusted gross revenues definition that was part of a Supreme Court case and negatively affected some of the wireless carriers, although not all of them, primarily of the existing carries, it's Vodafone, and then to a lesser extent, Airtel and it doesn't really affect RJio too much," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. Indian Telecom Market to Re-Emerge As Fastest Growing MarketThe CFO of ATC said that India was one of the "fastest growing markets" for ATC and that the country will "return to that" state "once we get through some of these headwinds." "The primary issue now is the adjusted gross revenues definition and how that may affect Vodafone-Idea over in India," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. "So, that's really what we are looking at, at the moment. And we're looking for a couple of things from Voda in terms of the pathway forward. Certainly, the timing of these things will be important." With the operators receiving a 10-year timeframe to make the payments related to the AGR case, Smith said that the judgement provides a "much longer runway" for Vodafone Idea to plan its cash flows and "make arrangements to make those payments." Further, Smith highlighted that Vodafone Idea is in the market looking to raise equity and that ATC is hoping "something constructive there happens at some point in the next quarter or so." "We're watching all those potential activities and certainly rooting for Voda to have a lot of success in those arenas in raising equity and raising prices and continuing to work with the government," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. "We do see a very supportive executive branch in the India government. They're very supportive of telecommunications in general, and they have a strategic objective to digitize the Indian economy." Smith said that India offers a "great opportunity" and that the company believes "there's a lot of potential, a lot of upside" in the Indian market. "It's a market that has 1.3 billion people in it," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. "It primarily relies on 2G and 3G networks, a little bit of 4G network available through the RJio network, but primarily 2G and 3G. So, a significant amount of investment is required in order to bring those networks up to 4G capability and improve the quality over time. So, that is really exciting." Smith highlighted that Vodafone Idea represents 5% of ATC's total company property revenue and 40% of India property revenue. However, Smith said that Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are currently driving the business activity in India. "We're going to build about 4,000 new towers in India this year," Smith said in the UBS Global TMT Conference Call. "The majority of those towers will be built for Airtel. There remains a lot of capital being deployed in India, building out these networks to get them where they need to be in order to handle the 4G networks that will be coming in the future." | BSNL to Provide SIM Card for No Additional Charge Till January 1 Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-sim-card-free-offer-no-cost/317293/, BSNL to Provide SIM Card for No Additional Charge Till January 1
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in a limited time offer, is going to allow customers to purchase new SIM cards for free. The state-run telco has been quite creative with its offers in recent years yet hasn't been able to attract a large number of subscribers simply because of no substantial 4G coverage around the country. However, the telco has understood the relevance of offering freebies to the users. Users can get Disney+ Hotstar Premium with its select broadband plans. Not only this, the telco has recently increased the speed of the internet, which users get after the fair usage policy (FUP) limit is reached with their broadband connection. Now, in another interesting move, the telco is offering the SIM card for free to its users. More details on the story ahead. BSNL Free SIM card OfferBSNL is offering users a free SIM card till the end of this year. The offer will be applicable for people who purchase their new connections in the period of December 17, 2020, to January 1, 2021. But again, there are terms and condition associated with this offer. To avail a free SIM card from BSNL, subscribers will have to get a First Recharge (FRC) plan of Rs 100 or more. If the person subscribes with the state-run telco within the 16 days of the offer period and gets a FRC of Rs 100 or more, he/she will get the SIM card absolutely for free. What's worth noting here is that the SIM card doesn't cost too much in the first place. Without the offer, the normal charge that the user would have to pay for the BSNL SIM card is Rs 20. So effectively, the user will be only saving Rs 20 under this offer from BSNL. It is not the first time that BSNL has rolled out this offer though. In fact, just last month, we reported that BSNL is giving the SIM card free to users who go for FRC of Rs 100 or more on their new connections. That offer was live for a 15 day period in November, from dates November 14, 2020, to November 28, 2020. Now BSNL has brought the same offer for 16 days back and has kept it live for the users till the end of the year. | Airtel and Jio Might End Up With 80% of the Telecom Market in 12 to 18 Months: Sunil Mittal Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:00 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-and-jio-sunil-mitta-arpu-5g/317240/, Airtel and Jio Might End Up With 80% of the Telecom Market in 12 to 18 Months: Sunil Mittal
India's top two telecom operators, namely Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel might end up with 80% market share in the next 12 to 18 months believes Sunil Mittal, founder and Chairperson of Bharti Enterprises. In a report shared by Goldman Sachs, Sunil Mittal has expressed that from the current 75%, the top two operators in India can gain up to 80% of the market share in the coming time. Mittal also expressed his views on investing in subsidised smartphones and said that it would just be draining the company money. More details on the story ahead. Bharti Airtel Looking to Convert Payments Bank License to Small Finance BankMittal revealed to Goldman Sachs that Airtel is pushing to upgrade its Payments Bank license into Small Finance Bank license. This would help the telco in accepting larger sums of money (at the moment restricted to $1,500) and also enable money lending service to users. He further said that because of the current payment services, Airtel has been able to reduce the churn of mobile customers. Talking about the low-end smartphones, Mittal said that the investment on the devices wouldn't be justified in the long term. This is particularly because of the low average revenue per user (ARPUs) and high churn rate of mobile customers. He said that Jio doesn't pose a huge threat with its low-end smartphone and 5G services launch since it will take some years for the 5G in the Indian market to mature. Mittal also said that the current ARPUs are much lower than what it should have been. He said that Airtel would have achieved the ARPU of Rs 200 by now, but because of the slowdown caused by COVID-19, things aren't at the right place. He did say that the ARPU will reach Rs 200 for Airtel in the coming months anyway. Mittal further said that the ideal ARPU for the industry should be Rs 300, and the high-end customers should be comfortable paying up to $6-7 per month (approximately Rs 500). As for 5G, Mittal believes that today there aren't sufficient use cases of 5G. Thus Airtel isn't too much worried about launching 5G services soon. He also said that for 5G to happen in India, wide availability of low-cost 5G devices has to be ensured. Further, he has said before that Airtel might not participate in the 5G auctions which might take place in 2021 because of the high spectrum rates set by the regulator. At the launch event, the company also hinted on the possible launch of another new flagship device, namely Reno5 Pro+ 5G. The device is said to launch on December 24, 2020, and might feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Now, before the possible launch of the device on December 14, the smartphone has been found listed on the Geekbench. The device has been found with the model number PDRM00. While there is no confirmation from Oppo about this model number being associated with the Reno5 Pro+ 5G, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Snapdragon 865 SoC will pair with Reno5 Pro+ 5G only since it is the sole flagship device from Oppo which is going to launch shortly. In addition to this, a poster has been making rounds online suggesting that the Oppo Reno5 Pro+ 5G will indeed launch on December 24, 2020. Coming back to the listing on Geekbench, the device is expected to run on Android 11 out of the box. Also, the SoC will be coupled with up to 8GB of RAM. The Oppo Reno5 Pro+ 5G might be coming to the market in two different colours namely gradient blue and black. Apart from this, the device is expected to support the 90Hz refresh rate and come with an FHD+ AMOLED display. Since there wasn't a difference in the cameras of the Reno5 5G and Reno5 Pro 5G, it is expected that the front camera of the Reno5 Pro+ 5G will sport the same 32MP sensor at the front as in other devices. Tata Sky Malayalam Cinema Added in Partnership With AsiaNetTata Sky has added Malayalam Cinema to its platform in partnership with Asianet. | Jio Approaches Trai for Anti-Competitive MNP Campaign Run by Rivals, Airtel Calls it Baseless Posted: 14 Dec 2020 07:55 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/jio-trai-mnp-campaign-agricultural-bill/317137/, Jio Approaches Trai for Anti-Competitive MNP Campaign Run by Rivals, Airtel Calls it Baseless
Leading telecom operator Reliance Jio has approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) asking to take ‘strict action’ against Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. The Mukesh Ambani-led telco says Airtel and Vi are running ‘unethical and anti-competitive MNP campaign’ touting that it will benefit from the three agricultural bills passed by the Parliament. Right after Jio writing to Trai, Bharti Airtel termed the charge by Jio as ‘baseless.’ Vodafone Idea, on the flip side, also termed these charges by Jio as baseless and claimed such things would tarnish its reputation in the market. Jio told Trai that it is receiving a large number of MNP requests and the customers are citing agricultural bills as the reason for porting out. Jio Urges Trai to Take Strict Action Against Airtel and ViReliance Jio has urged Trai to take strict action against both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea for running an anti-competitive MNP campaign in “unethical” ways. Jio informed Trai that its customers are applying for MNP over the agricultural bills and not based on the network issues. “a large number of port out requests, wherein the customers are citing this as the sole reason for porting out of Jio without having any complaints or other issues related to Jio services,” wrote Jio in its letter to Trai.
Immediately after Jio writing to Trai, the country’ second-largest telco Bharti Airtel touted the claims made by Jio as ‘baseless.’
Airtel also referred that Jio is receiving MNP requests in the Punjab/Haryana LSA. Vodafone Idea also hit back at Jio saying “These are baseless allegations against us to malign our reputation. We strongly refute such irresponsible comments on us.” Jio is facing the pressure in the said telecom circle where its customers are porting out to Airtel and Vodafone Idea over the agricultural bills row. The Trai is yet to respond to Jio’s letter. Original article: Jio Approaches Trai for Anti-Competitive MNP Campaign Run by Rivals, Airtel Calls it Baseless ©2020 TelecomTalk. All Rights Reserved. |
| Vodafone Idea Wi-Fi Calling Service to Be Available in 2 Circles Starting Today Posted: 14 Dec 2020 05:32 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-wifi-calling-service/317110/, Vodafone Idea Wi-Fi Calling Service to Be Available in 2 Circles Starting Today
Vodafone Idea’s much-awaited ‘Wi-Fi Calling‘ or ‘VoWi-Fi‘ service will be available for customers starting today. The telco has confirmed this news via direct message to a reader of TelecomTalk. The Vi Wi-Fi Calling service will be available only in two circles- Maharashtra & Goa and Kolkata circles at the launch. The company will likely launch the service in other circles in a phased manner. Wi-Fi Calling from Vi has been overdue for a year now. To recall, the top two telcos- Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel launched their Wi-Fi Calling service exactly a year now, and it has popular features offered by any telco in recent years. For the unaware, Wi-Fi Calling allows users to make and receive voice calls over a wireless connection. Vi Wi-Fi Calling Launched: Everything You Need to KnowAs noted, the launch of Vi Wi-Fi Calling is confirmed by the company’s customer support team on Twitter. TelecomTalk reader Amit Sharma reached out Vi’s official support on Twitter via direct message enquiring when the telco is planning to launch Wi-Fi Calling service. In reply, he received “Hi! Wi-Fi Calling ("Wi-Fi Calling") is an integrated service that allows you to make and receive voice calls over a wireless Internet connection such as your home broadband, office broadband or public Wi-Fi. This should help you make voice calls in areas with low network coverage. This is applicable for Maharashtra & Goa, Kolkata circles and will be available from 15th December 2020.” This news will not come as a surprise because the telco has been testing the Wi-Fi Calling service for quite some time. In fact, reports emerged at the beginning of 2019 stated Vi would launch Wi-Fi Calling feature ahead of other telcos. Thanks to the network integration of Vodafone and Idea, the telco wasn’t able to launch the service. The Vi Wi-Fi Calling service will be available only in two circles at the launch- Maharashtra & Goa and Kolkata. This is very much similar to how Airtel launched its VoWi-Fi Calling service initially in December 2019. It seems like Vi’s Wi-Fi Calling will work with any broadband operator, at least that’s what the reply from the customer support member suggests. We have reached out to Vodafone Idea for an official confirmation and will update the story after receiving a reply. Lastly, we were unable to spot any listings about Wi-Fi Calling on the company’s website as of this writing. Do you belong to the circles mentioned above with a Vi connection? Let us know by commenting below if the feature is available for you or not. Original article: Vodafone Idea Wi-Fi Calling Service to Be Available in 2 Circles Starting Today ©2020 TelecomTalk.
