next-spectrum-auction-india-march-coai-welcomes

The Union Cabinet has approved the next spectrum auction and it will be held in India by March 2021, an official statement from the government said. The Cabinet has cleared the DoT’s proposal in which the department stated the willingness to conduct spectrum auction by March 2021. The frequency bands- 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz, will be auctioned, and it will be offered to the telcos for a period of 20 years. The government will auction 2,251.25 MHz of spectrum at a reserve price of Rs 3,92,332.70 crore. The spectrum auction will help telcos like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to further boost their network capacity.

Government to Auction Spectrum in 7 Frequency Bands

Aforesaid, the next auction will be for spectrum in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz frequency bands. Reliance Jio will be aiming to procure a major chunk of the spectrum in 800 MHz frequency band to boost its network capacity. For the unaware, Reliance Jio is offering 4G services using 800 MHz band of Reliance Communications.

Successful bidders will have the option to pay the entire big amount upfront, or they can pay 25% of the amount for the spectrum won in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz frequency bands. In the case of spectrum won in 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz bands, the successful bidders will have to pay at last 50% of the amount upfront. The government also said the remaining amount could be paid by the bidders in up to a 16 averaged annual instalments after a moratorium of two years.

india-spectrum-auction2021

Additionally, the bidders who win the spectrum will also be required to pay 3% Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), and these charges do not include wireline services as spectrum usage charges. As part of the same spectrum auction plan, the government is also looking to sell 8,300 megahertz (MHz) of the spectrum for a reserve price of Rs 5.23 lakh crore.

“We welcome the government's decision to auction spectrum by March 2021. This will enable the industry to cater to the exponential increase data usage and continue supporting the Digital India vision. While the Govt. has addressed the requirement for more spectrum, lower reserve prices would have provided additional resources for network expansion to the Telcos. High reserve prices in past auctions have resulted in large amounts of spectrum remaining unsold. We hope the Govt. will take additional measures to boost the financial health of the industry, which is the backbone of a digitally connected India," said Dr SP Kochhar, DG, COAI.

Telecom operators Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea are yet to respond to this news. While Jio is expected to like this move from the Cabinet, Airtel and Vodafone Idea will likely oppose the move.

Samsung Dismisses Rumours of Galaxy Note Series Discontinuation

Samsung will continue launching devices under the Galaxy Note series as the company rubbishes rumours of Note series discontinuation. Ever since the Galaxy Note 20 devices arrived, it is being rumoured that Samsung is discontinuing the Note series by bringing the popular S Pen support to all its flagship series- Galaxy S, and Z Fold. The Galaxy S21 series is launching next month, and the premium device in the series- Galaxy S21 Ultra is said to offer S Pen support, whereas the other two phones (Galaxy S21 and the S21+) will have optional S Pen support. Now, a new report coming from South Korea says the Galaxy Note series will stay alive and the company is focussing on bringing the features to other devices as well.

Samsung Galaxy Note Series to Stay Alive, New Report Claims

The Galaxy Note 21 series was expected to debut sometime in August 2021, however, multiple rumours in recent times said the company is killing the popular Note series. A report from Yonhap News citing a Samsung official said the company is planning to launch the next Note series device in 2021.

In addition to that, TM Roh, Samsung Mobile Business President, also confirmed that the Galaxy Note experience might be applied to more products, hinting that the Galaxy Note series will stay alive. So we can now believe a new Galaxy Note device will arrive next year.

Meanwhile, Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy S21 series next month with Snapdragon 888 5G/Exynos 2100 5G SoC. Similar to the S20 series, the S21 series will also have three smartphones- Galaxy S21, S21+ and the S21 Ultra. The Galaxy S21 Ultra will have S Pen support which was also evident from the renders of the smartphone leaked recently.

The discontinuation of the Galaxy Note series was originally reported a couple of months ago. Later, Reuters claimed that Samsung is killing the series by adding S Pen support to its other flagship smartphones. Another popular tipster did not include the Galaxy Note 21 series in his list of Samsung’s flagship smartphone that had the S21 series, Fold 3 and even the S21 FE. With the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, Samsung now has at least four flagship smartphone series. And the sales of Galaxy Note 20 devices are said to be on the lower side. This could be the reason why the reports of Galaxy Note series discontinuation emerged. That said, the latest news will come as a relief for the Galaxy Note fans across the world.

BSNL Yet to Clear Employee Salaries for November 2020, Says Employee Union

Telecom operator BSNL is yet to clear the employee salaries for November 2020, according to BSNL Employee Union (BSNLEU). It seems like BSNL is back to financial troubles which again is leading the telco not to disburse salaries to the employees. There was a time when BSNL did not provide salaries to the employees for almost six months. The relief package from the government and also the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) helped the telco to strengthen financially. The BSNLEU even reached out to the company’s CEO, however, there is no release of the salaries. This news is reported by ET Telecom.

BSNLEU Says the Telco Abdicated its Responsibility to Clear Salaries

"The union is most pained to note that, the management has abdicated its responsibility of disbursing salary to the employees as per the existing terms and the conditions, i.e., on the last working day of every month. Further, it is also forcing the employees to come to the streets and to demonstrate every month, for getting their salary," the group said in an official statement, that is accessed by ET Telecom.

The telco is yet to clear the employee salaries for November 2020. The BSNLEU even reached out the BSNL CMD regarding the issue, but “there has been no respite yet.”

Furthermore, the Employee Union also urged BSNL to clear salaries for November and December promptly, given the new year is approaching. It also claimed that BSNL is forcing its employees to come out on the public and demonstrate their woes. "In all the letters, BSNLEU has demanded that salary should be disbursed on the last working day of the month. It is disturbing to note that the management has not at all cared about all these letters and the pleadings of the Union have fallen in deaf ears," the BSNLEU added.

Lastly, the BSNLEU added the telco should not blame the COVID-19 pandemic for not clearing the employee salaries for the month of November because everything has returned to normalcy now.

To recall, the Cabinet approved revival package for BSNL a year ago, after which the telco managed to reduce its monthly wage bill from a whopping Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 1,400 crore. Despite such a major reduction in the monthly wage bill, BSNL seems to be facing financial issues again. The reason behind BSNL not clearing employee salaries is unknown at the moment, but the telco will likely blame the hardships it is facing due to COVID-19.

vi-vowi-fi-service-xiaomi-oneplus

Vodafone Idea (Vi) VoWi-Fi service is active but can be supported by select devices from Xiaomi and OnePlus only. Just a few days back, we reported that Vi has started providing users living in Maharashtra & Goa and Kolkata circles with the VoWi-Fi service. Now, the telco has highlighted the devices which can support the service on its website. The only thing is the Vi VoWi-Fi service can be supported by a handful of devices from OnePlus and Xiaomi at present. Keep reading ahead to find out which devices we are talking about.

Devices Which Support Vi VoWi-FI

As per the website page of Vodafone Idea, it can be noted that a total of 9 devices can only support vi VoWi-Fi. Out of the 9 devices, 7 devices are from Xiaomi, and 2 devices are from OnePlus.

Xiaomi devices include Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Mi 10, Mi 10T, Poco X3, Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi Note 9 Pro, and Redmi Note 9. Coming to the OnePlus devices, there are only two namely OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 8T.

For activating the Vi VoWi-Fi calling in Xiaomi devices, users can go to Settings > SIM cards and mobile networks and then select the operator under SIM CARD SETTINGS and at last turn on the 'Make Calls using Wi-Fi' option.

For OnePlus users, the process is largely the same with going to the Settings first, then tapping on Wi-Fi and Internet > SIM and network > SIM 1 or SIM 2 and lastly turning on the 'Wi-Fi Calling' option.

Vodafone Idea has said that it is looking to expand the VoWi-Fi calling service to more telecom circles of India soon. To check if the VoW-Fi service is active or not while making the call, the user needs to look for the Wi-Fi calling icon at the top of the screen on the status bar.

To ensure that the Wi-Fi calling takes place smoothly, the user needs to be connected to a strong Wi-Fi network. If the Wi-Fi single drops or has network issues, it will impact the quality of the call directly.

Vi VoWi-Fi calling is possible even when the person on the other end is not connected to a Wi-Fi signal. Users with unlimited voice calling packs won't be charged anything extra for making calls; however, users in limited or fair usage policy (FUP) calling packs making Wi-Fi calls will be charged on the standard rate.

With time, more devices and more circles of India will be getting the support of Vi VoWi-Fi calling.

4G Spectrum Auctions Might Take Place in March, 2021

4g-spectrum-auctions-march-2021

The 4G spectrum auctions might take place in March 2021. The Cabinet has a meeting scheduled on Wednesday wherein it might consider the request made by the telecom department for the auctioning of 4G spectrum. As per a report from ET Telecom, one of the officials related to the matter believes that 4G spectrum auction is likely to happen in March next year. Whereas, for the auction of 5G spectrum, the industry will have to wait until the end of 2021 or even 2022. More details on the story ahead.

DoT to Stick With 3% Spectrum Usage Charge for Airwaves

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is not considering to lower the Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) for spectrum bought by the operators in the next auction. The department will be looking to auction the sub-1 GHz including 700 MHz, 800 MHz, and 900 MHz in addition to the over-1 GHz bands of 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300Mhz, and 2500 MHz. The 3300-3600 MHz bands are reserved for 5G auctions at a later date.

The government will be offering 2,475 MHz of spectrum at a starting price of Rs 4.35 lakh crore as per recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in August 2018. The base rate of the 800 MHz band was reduced by 20% by the regulatory from Rs 5,819 a unit to Rs 4,651 a unit.

DoT has also allowed the telecom operators to split the upfront payment which they have to make for purchasing spectrum. The department will seek for 10% of the 25% upfront payment that the operators have to make for purchasing airwaves in the sub-1 GHz bands right away. As for the airwaves in the over-1 GHz band, the department will ask 20% of the 50% upfront payment right away from the operators.

A thing worth noting here is that the government has increased the overall airwaves holding limit from the earlier 25% to 35% now. Reliance Jio's airwaves which is shared with the Reliance Communications in the 800 MHz band are due to expire starting July 2021 in around 12 to 14 circles of India.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) will largely see airwaves expiring in the 1,800 MHz bands in around 8 circles of India starting July 2021. The good thing for these telcos is that they both have backup airwaves in the concerned areas so they won't have to worry about spending too much at the auctions.

At the same time, nothing is confirmed yet. If the 4G spectrum auctions were to be pushed ahead, it would mean a further delay for 5G auctions for India.

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/qualcomm-snapdragon-678-soc-announced/317423/, Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 SoC Announced: A 4G Chip for Mid-Range Smartphones

After nearly two years, the not-so-popular Snapdragon 675 SoC is getting a successor in the form of Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 Mobile Platform. Yes, Qualcomm just announced the Snapdragon 678 chipset and it will be seen in mid-range smartphones launching next year. The Snapdragon 678 SoC is very identical to Snapdragon 675 SoC, and there are very minimal upgrades. The new SoC also runs 11nm process, has Kryo 460 CPU and Adreno 612 GPU and features the Snapdragon X12 modem. Unlike the mid-range Qualcomm chips launched recently, the Snapdragon 678 lacks 5G support, latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tech, and also sits below the Snapdragon 720G chipset that’s powering various mid-range phones currently.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 Mobile Platform: Features Detailed

The chipset has Kryo 460 CPU cores with a clock speed of up to 2.2 GHz. It is built on 11nm process and has the Adreno 612 GPU underneath. The difference between the Snapdragon 675 and Snapdragon 678 SoCs is the faster clock speed on the latter. Qualcomm also says the Adreno 612 GPU on Snapdragon 678 SoC delivers better performance, however, it did not dive into the details.

While Qualcomm did not make many improvements on the performance side, it did make some upgrades to the photo & video section. The new Qualcomm Spectra 250L ISP on the Snapdragon 678 SoC supports dual cameras up to 16MP, up to 192MP captures, 5X optical zoom, portrait mode and more. Furthermore, the Hexagon 685 DSP helps in capturing brighter photos without draining power.

Rest of the features are similar to Snapdragon 675 SoC. The Snapdragon 678 packs Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem that delivers 600 Mbps peak download speeds and 150 Mbps peak upload speeds. As for carrier aggregation, the chipset supports 3×20 MHz downlink carrier aggregation and 2×20 MHz uplink carrier aggregation.

"We are uniquely positioned to support OEMs in delivering the next generation of devices with in-demand features and performance," said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "Snapdragon 678 brings advanced mobile capabilities for daily entertainment at lightning-fast speeds over reliable connections and long-lasting battery life for consumers worldwide," he further added.

Other connectivity options include Dual SIM Dual VoLTE (DSDV), VoWi-Fi, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, 1×1 MIMO configuration, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, QZSS and SBAS. The chipset also supports USB 3.1 and USB Type-C.

The chipset also supports Full HD+ displays with a pixels resolution of 2520×1080. Lastly, the latest mid-range Mobile Platform from Qualcomm supports QuickCharge 4+ technology. We might see smartphones with Snapdragon 678 SoC launching in early 2021. At the moment, there are no reports of any smartphone using this new mid-range SoC from Qualcomm.

BSNL Rs 199 Prepaid Recharge With 2GB Daily Data and 30 Days Validity Launched

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-rs199-prepaid-recharge-launched/317410/, BSNL Rs 199 Prepaid Recharge With 2GB Daily Data and 30 Days Validity Launched

Ahead of Christmas 2020, state-run BSNL has brought a new prepaid recharge of Rs 199. BSNL is still the only telecom operator to offer 2GB of data per day for under Rs 200 because private telcos are charging at least 25% more than the government-owned PSU for similar data benefit. Alongside announcing the new plan, BSNL also confirmed the removal of PV 186, which used to provide 2GB data per day for 28 days. The Rs 199 prepaid recharge replaces the PV 186, and it comes with two days of extra validity as well. The telco also revamped the Rs 998 plan to offer 3GB data per day instead of the earlier 2GB data per day benefit. The new Rs 199 plan and the revised Rs 998 plan will be effective starting December 24, 2020, according to Kerala Telecom. The PV 186 will not be available starting January 1.

BSNL Rs 199 Prepaid Recharge: What It Offers?

Talking about the PV 199 prepaid plan first, it offers a user 2GB of data per day, unlimited voice calling to any network capped at 250 minutes per day and 100 SMSes per day. The validity of the plan is 30 days. BSNL continues to limit the voice calls to 250 minutes per day even with the Rs 199 prepaid plan, which is underwhelming. But on the brighter side, the telco is offering 2GB daily data. Do make a note that the plan will be available for recharge across all the telecom circles starting December 24, 2020, because it is launched on the occasion of Christmas 2020.

As noted, BSNL is also getting rid of PV 186 which is currently offering 2GB data per day, unlimited voice calling and 100 SMSes per day for 28 days. The PV 186 will not be available for the customers to recharge from January 1, 2020.

BSNL Rs 998 Prepaid Recharge to Offer 3GB Data per Day

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is also revising the Rs 998 prepaid recharge, and it is going to offer 3GB data per day starting from December 24, 2020. Currently, the plan is providing 2GB of data per day to the customers. The plan will be revised from December 24, and it will go back to its old benefits on March 23, 2021, because BSNL is introducing the change on a promotional basis.

The Rs 998 recharge is a data-only plan with 240 days validity and BSNL Tunes subscription that’s valid for 60 days. After the revision, BSNL’s Rs 998 recharge offers a whopping 720GB of data, up from the earlier 480GB of data benefit.
