MeitY: Did Not Grant Permission to PUBG Mobile for Relaunch in India

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has cleared the confusion regarding PUBG Mobile’s relaunch in India. In response to multiple RTI applications filed by MediaNama, the ministry said it did not grant any permission for PUBG Mobile India. The ban on PUBG Mobile was imposed by the MeitY back in September this year and the servers were taken down on October 30. However, last month, PUBG Corporation stated it is bringing a new version of the game aka ‘PUBG Mobile India,’ and it even started teasing the game’s relaunch. But the fact is MeitY did not grant any permission for the company to launch the game in India.

PUBG Mobile Relaunch Has No Permission from MeitY

The MeitY, in its response to an RTI, said "MeitY does not grant permission for starting of any websites/mobile Apps/service. Accordingly, MeitY has not granted permission to PUBG/PUBG Mobile India." In response to another RTI, it reiterated that the "MeitY has not given any permission for launch of PUBG."

It is evident that PUBG Corporation does not have enough permissions for relaunching the game in the country. So the sad news is: PUBG Mobile India isn’t launching anytime soon. Multiple reports on the web also highlighted that the MeitY officials even declined meetings with PUBG Corporation for a possible settle down in the matter.

This news will come as a massive disappointment for many PUBG Mobile players in the country. The relaunch of the game is now under uncertainty and we are yet to receive an official statement from PUBG Corporation regarding this news.

Last month, right before Diwali, PUBG Corporation made a special announcement of ‘PUBG Mobile India’ version launch with some changes compared to the global version. Also, the company partnered with Microsoft Azure to host the player data within the country, so that the MeitY can rule out data security and hosting issue.

The company also stated it would be investing $100 million in India and also drive the esports growth. India is the largest market for PUBG Mobile and the ban is already hugely affecting the company. Right now, PUBG Corporation is holding the PUBG Mobile Global Championship online tournament and India isn’t part of this massive esports event. Thanks to the lack of Indian teams, the viewership of the tournament on YouTube also saw a massive decline.

Do you think the MeitY should grant permission for PUBG Mobile India relaunch? Let us know by commenting below.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) released its Monthly Smartphone Tracker for October 2020, in which it highlighted the monthly shipments in India registered a massive 42% growth YoY. Smartphone brands in India shipped 21 million units largely driven by multiple online sales and continued demand from September in which the brands shipped the most number of units in a single month at 23 million. Xiaomi shipped a whopping 5.5 million smartphones in October, followed by Samsung with 4.5 million and Vivo with 3.9 million. Xiaomi has discounted various Redmi smartphones during the festive season to boost the sales and the strategy paid off for the brand. Realme shipped 3 million units during the same period.

Smartphone Brands Shipping a Whopping 21 Million Units in October

IDC gave a deep insight into the market trends during the month. The Market Operating Price stood at $190 (approx. Rs 13,950) in October with 68% of the market in the sub-$200 (approx. Rs 14,700) range. Online channels registered growth in the $100-200 price segment clocking in 93% growth YoY, collectively accounting for almost half of the sales in October. Further, Xiaomi was the leading brand in 30 of the top 50 cities within the sub-$200 segment.

The midrange segment (US$200-300) accounted for almost a fourth of devices sold in October. Samsung led in 36 of the top 50 cities of India. The premium segment ($500+) registered 16% YoY growth in October, with Apple leading the market in 49 of the top 50 cities. Further, IDC said this segment accounted for 5% market share in the leading 50 cities of India, compared to less than 1% in the rest of cities.

Overall, smartphone brands shipped 21 million units in the month, and the online channel aggression continued, growing 53% YoY especially in smaller towns & cities. The lower mid-range segment ($100-200) grew by 60% YoY as its share in the market increased to 58%. Xiaomi, Vivo and Samsung. The Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9 and Vivo Y20 were the top models in this price range, says IDC.

In the premium segment, the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and the OnePlus 8 registered high shipments driven by affordability schemes and offers. The top five vendors during the month are Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.

As for city-wise data, IDC’s ‘Monthly City-Level Smartphone Tracker’ which tracks sell-out units for the leading 50 cities in India & the rest of the states cited a record 22 million smartphones were sold in October, largely due to the consumers purchasing smartphones during the pre-Diwali month.

The IDC India tracker also revealed that 25% of the market belong to top tier cities- New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. E-learning initiatives fueled demand in bigger cities, said IDC in its report. The next set of emerging markets, namely Jaipur, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bhopal & Coimbatore, also grew by around 50% YoY. However, the rest of the states (up-country markets) registered slower growth (around 25%), primarily owing to looming economic concerns and consumer spending narrowing to essentials only.

Lastly, the report added that the leading 50 cities of India accounted for around 55% demand nationally. The remainder is in the next set of evolving towns and cities, with huge untapped potential in the up-country geographies (feature phone-heavy markets).

jio-requires-rs28000-crore-spectrum-vi
Reliance Jio, the largest wireless operator in India is required to spend Rs 28,000 crore in the upcoming spectrum auction expected to be held in March, Motilal Oswal said on Wednesday. The firm engaged in the financial services in a report said that the upcoming spectrum auction "would cater largely to the renewal of expiring spectrum coming up" in the next financial year. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) proposal to conduct an auction for spectrum across multiple bands including 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 Mhz.

Reliance Jio Required to Spend The Most in Spectrum Auctions

Further, the spectrum in 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands will also be up in the auction with the government highlighting that a total of 2251.25 MHz will be under the hammer. In a release, the government also highlighted that the 2251.25 MHz of spectrum is valued at Rs 3.92 lakh crore at a base reserve price.

"The auction would cater largely to the renewal of expiring spectrum coming up in FY22, along with fresh spectrum in the remaining bands," Motilal Oswal said in its report.

The firm highlighted that Reliance Jio would require capital expenditure of Rs 28,000 crore to renew its expiring spectrum at reserve price while Bharti Airtel would require Rs 13,000 crore. Further, Vodafone Idea is said to require the least capital expenditure of Rs 8300 crore to renew its expiring spectrum.

Motilal Oswal in a report in October said that Reliance Jio has 115 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz band up for expiry in the upcoming year. The 800 MHz band spectrum is said to have been acquired/shared by Reliance Jio from Reliance Communications across 19 circles. Similarly, Airtel is said to have 57 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band up for renewal in the upcoming year. Vodafone Idea, the third largest operator is said to have 37.8 MHz and 6.2 MHz of spectrum up for renewal in the 1800 MHz band and 900 MHz band respectively.

700 MHz Band Carries "Whopping" Price Tag

Motilal Oswal highlighted that the value of 700 MHz spectrum alone stood at a "whopping" Rs 2.3 lakh crore, as per the base price set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

"The steep pricing of the 700MHz spectrum has been maintained, leaving limited interest among telcos to buy this spectrum at such an exorbitant price," Motilal Oswal said in its report.

The firm also highlighted that the remaining spectrum is valued at Rs 1.6 lakh crore and that the telecom operators "would need to furnish additional capex to buy fresh spectrum."

Government Invites Semiconductor Manufacturing Companies to Set Shop in India

government-invites-semiconductor-manufacturing-companies-india

The Indian government has in the past shown interest in getting major global tech companies to set up their semiconductor fabrication facilities in India. But so far, the move has been largely unsuccessful. Now, the government has invited these particular companies again and is open to giving them subsidies and other advantages. This move from the government comes after there was a shortage of semiconductor chips reported by the Indian smartphone manufacturers. If companies agree and move their production facilities of semiconductor fabrication to India, it would help the 'Make in India' initiative of the government hugely. Adding to that, it would also benefit the Indian smartphone manufacturer since they will be able to get the chips for a much cheaper cost — more details on the story ahead.

PLI Scheme of Government Might Attract Companies to Come to India

The Indian government introduced a Production-linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to give companies incentives on their incremental sales who manufacture their products in India. This is what will be different this time, along with multiple other things for foreign companies.

It is worthy to note that the last time the government invited foreign semiconductor companies to India for manufacturing locally, it offered the companies 40% subsidies. Even after this, the companies didn't come to India.

But this around, multiple thins are different. First is the above mentioned PLI scheme, but adding to that, the production of electronics has more than doubled in the last few years, which promises a high demand for semiconductor chips.

As per a report from ET Telecom, the government is all ready to sit down with the companies which run semiconductor fabs to understand what they require and how it would help them to grow in the country. For achieving the government's dream of setting up $400 billion worth of electronics manufacturing by 2025 in the country, this move needs to go through.

It would ensure that no Indian company in the future faces any shortage in semiconductor chipsets. Not only this, but it would also put India in a position to be able to export semiconductor chipsets to other countries.

For those who don't understand, semiconductor fabs are those facilities which are used to manufacture integrated circuits. These type of facilities and factories require a ton of resources such as power and water and that too in an ample quantity without any interference or stoppage. They require billions of dollars to set up. If the Indian government really goes out and understands the pain points of these companies and help them with it, it would put the country in an excellent position in terms with 'Make in India' initiative.

Amazon Fire TV range of devices will receive a new user interface in the coming months with a slew of new features. Amazon says the new update is Fire TV’s biggest experience update ever. It brands a reimagined design & navigation, redesigned home screen, improved content discovery, user profiles and improved navigation with Alexa. The new Fire TV update will be rolled out to Fire TV Stick (3rd gen) and Fire TV Stick Lite users in the coming weeks. Old Amazon Fire TV devices will pick up the update in early 2021. With Android TV range of devices gaining momentum in India, it is high time for Amazon to revamp the interface of Fire TV, and it has done exactly the same. Continue reading to know more about the new features added by Amazon to Fire TV.

Fire TV User Interface Update: Revamped Design and Navigation

Starting with the design, the Fire TV update will reimagine the design and navigation. Amazon says it will be now easier and faster to get to what you’re looking for. The Main Menu will now be in the centre of the screen, and it allows the users to navigate to key destinations like Home, Find, Live, Library, Profiles and more, easily. Users can click up to discover popular content and watch trailers or click down to browse expanded rows of shows and movies.

By clicking down, users can also access the apps, channels and games along with the ability to pin and rearrange the order of apps. With supported streaming services, users can now scroll over the app icon to quickly peek at what's inside and begin playback, or simply jump into the app itself.

Fire TV User Interface Update: Redesigned Home Screen

Amazon also revamped the Home Screen of Fire TV UI. It now features a new look and feel with content tailored to each profile and the user viewing preferences. Users can now find show and movie recommendations from subscription-based apps like Amazon Prime Video, ZEE5, SonyLIV and Voot. Content recommendations appear in the 'Popular Movies & TV Shows' row and will improve over time as the user watches content.

Fire TV User Interface Update: Improved Content Discovery

The Fire TV UI now features a newly designed ‘Find’ tab to filter content by content like Movies or TV Shows, or search recommended categories like Comedy, Action or Adventure as well. The Find tab also enables users to search for movies or TV shows using filters. And the Find tab also has support for Alexa search.

Fire TV User Interface Update: User Profiles

Amazon Fire TV users can now create up to six user profiles on Fire TV, which provides a personalised experience for everyone in a household. Profiles allow each user to access their viewing history, recommendations, watch list, live TV preferences, and select settings, including accessibility features. After setting up the Alexa Voice Profile, switching Fire TV profiles is as simple as saying "Alexa, switch to my profile." Users will have to create a new ‘User Profile’ first and then create an Alexa Voice Profile for the users.

Fire TV User Interface Update: Improved Navigation with Alexa

Amazon has also improved the navigation with Alexa on Fire TV devices. Alexa allows users to use their voice to navigate throughout the UI; Users can just say "Alexa, go to Live" or "Alexa, go to Find." Besides, they can also say "Alexa, show me action movies" or "Alexa, switch to my profile."

On top of that, Alexa Explore, which is coming early next year, will provide a dedicated destination where the users can discover popular Alexa features, view connected smart home devices, see stocks, and more.

Fire TV User Interface Update: Tune In Live and Library

Lastly, the Live TV feature that was introduced very recently is also getting new features. The Main Menu bar features a dedicated Live tab where users can access shows (supported by the subscribed apps) currently on-air, or use the Channel Guide to browse for live sports, news, and TV channels.

After the update, users can quickly jump to their watchlist by visiting Library on the Main Menu bar.

Qualcomm and Google Collaborate to Enhance Project Treble and Provide 4 Years of OS Updates

Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:59 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/qualcomm-google-four-years-os-updates/317845/, Qualcomm and Google Collaborate to Enhance Project Treble and Provide 4 Years of OS Updates

Chipmaker Qualcomm and Google today announced their collaboration to enhance and extend Project Treble to offer four years of software updates. This partnership was established to enable more devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platforms to run the latest Android OS. Qualcomm says the enhancements are intended to enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to upgrade their Snapdragon-based devices to the latest Android OS without modifying Qualcomm’s chipset-specific software and to use a common Android software branch to upgrade devices based on a wide range of Snapdragon mobile platforms across the company’s portfolio.

Future Android Phones to Get 4 Years of Android Updates

The enhancements which are being made to Project Treble will reduce the time and resources required to upgrade Snapdragon-based devices to the latest Android OS version. The best part is both Google and Qualcomm are promising four years of Android OS versions along with four years of security updates for all Snapdragon platforms utilising the new Project Treble enhancements. The latest Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform will be the first chip to get enhanced Project Treble.

"Google continues to work closely with our technology partners to increase the freshness of the Android ecosystem. Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we expect that Android users will have the latest OS upgrades and greater security on their devices," said David Burke, vice president of Android engineering, Google.

Project Treble: What Exactly Is It?

Project Treble created a split between the OS framework and device-specific low-level software called the vendor implementation through a properly defined and stable vendor interface. Thanks to this split, the Android OS framework guarantees backward compatibility with the vendor implementation. With every new Android release, Project Treble publishes the Generic System Images (GSIs) that are built from AOSP sources, and are guaranteed to be backwards-compatible with the previous three versions of vendor implementations.

Therefore, devices launching with the new Android release must have vendor implementations compatible with that particular GSI. “This is the primary vehicle for reducing fragmentation within the OS framework,” says Google. Besides the reuse of a vendor implementation across OS updates, the Treble architecture also facilitates the re-use of the same OS framework code across different vendor implementations.

Having said that, Project Treble had its complexities for System-on-Chip manufacturers. For each SoC model, the SoC manufacturers are required to create multiple combinations of vendor implementations to support OEMs who would use that chipset to launch new devices and deploy OS upgrades on previously launched devices. This essentially meant that three years after the launch of an SoC, the vendor would have to support up to six combinations of OS framework software and vendor implementations.

Google realised that the problem was not with the device requirements instead it is with SoCs. So it created a new solution: Google extended the no-retroactivity principle to the SoCs as well as to devices. With this change, the SoC provider would be able to support Android with the same vendor implementations on their SoCs for device launches as well as upgrades.

Going forward, Google will reuse the same OS framework software across multiple Qualcomm chipsets. This lowers the number of OS framework and vendor implementation combinations that Qualcomm has to support across their mobile platforms and results in lowered engineering, development, and deployment costs.

Google confirmed the change would take effect with all SoCs launching with Android 11 and later.

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/jiofiber-broadband-plans-ott-benefits/317813/, JioFiber Broadband Plans Offer OTT Benefits Worth Up to Rs 1,800: Everything You Should Know

After the introduction of competitive broadband plans three months ago, JioFiber now has a total of seven plans on offer. At a starting price of Rs 399, JioFiber broadband plans are redefining the value broadband segment, and it is also forcing other ISPs in the country to provide affordable broadband plans. For example, BSNL introduced a Rs 449 plan that offers 30 Mbps speeds, whereas Airtel Xstream Fiber has a Rs 499 plan with 40 Mbps upload & download speeds. Similar to its postpaid plans, Reliance Jio is also offering OTT subscriptions worth up to Rs 1,800 with the JioFiber broadband plans. Continue reading to know more about the OTT benefits offered by JioFiber in detail.

JioFiber Broadband Plans With OTT Benefits Detailed

It is worth noting that the JioFiber’s entry-level plans of Rs 399 and Rs 699 does not come with any OTT subscriptions. So the OTT subscription benefits will come with broadband plans above Rs 999. Starting with the Rs 999 JioFiber broadband plan, it comes with OTT subscriptions of Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, SonyLIV, ZEE5, SunNXT, VOOT Select, VOOT Kids, ALTBalaji, Hoichoi, ShemarooMe, Lionsgate Play, Discovery+, Eros Now, JioCinema and JioSaavn. Overall, the JioFiber Rs 999 plan offers OTT subscriptions worth Rs 1,000.

Moving onto the Rs 1,499 JioFiber plan, it offers free access to OTT subscriptions worth Rs 1,500, and they are Netflix Basic plan worth Rs 499, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, SonyLIV, ZEE5, SunNXT, VOOT Select, VOOT Kids, ALTBalaji, Hoichoi, ShemarooMe, Lionsgate Play, Discovery+, Eros Now, JioCinema and JioSaavn.

The Rs 2,499 and Rs 3,999 JioFiber broadband plans offer Netflix Standard plan worth Rs 649 per month, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, SonyLIV, ZEE5, SunNXT, VOOT Select, VOOT Kids, ALTBalaji, Hoichoi, ShemarooMe, Lionsgate Play, Discovery+, Eros Now, JioCinema and JioSaavn. The OTT app subscriptions are worth Rs 1,650 with both these plans.

Lastly, we have the Rs 8,499 broadband plan which bumps up the Netflix plan benefit to ‘Netflix Premium’ that’s worth Rs 799 per month. Apart from Netflix, other OTT benefits remain the same- Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, SonyLIV, ZEE5, SunNXT, VOOT Select, VOOT Kids, ALTBalaji, Hoichoi, ShemarooMe, Lionsgate Play, Discovery+, Eros Now, JioCinema and JioSaavn. The OTT subscription benefits are worth Rs 1,800 with this Rs 8,499 JioFiber plan.
