india-lowest-ranked-countries-video-calling-mobile
Opensignal, a mobile analytics company in a report on Wednesday highlighted that India was amongst the lowest-ranked countries for video calling experience on mobile networks. The company in a report dubbed as "Quantifying The Mobile Experience of Group Video Calls" highlighted its analysis of the video calling experience on mobile networks across 75 countries. Opensignal said that Japan, Netherlands and South Korea clinched the top spot in its analysis with the users in the three countries experiencing better video calling experience as compared to the users in other countries.

Indian Ranked 66th for Video Calling Experience on Mobile Networks

According to Opensignal, India scored 18.7 points on a zero to 100 point scale with Costa Rica also scoring identical points as the second largest populous country in the world. Nine countries including Peru, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Algeria scored lower points than India. In comparison, the three countries jointly sharing the first position on Opensignal charts namely Japan, Netherlands and South Korea are said to have scored 68.7 points, 68.6 points and 68.2 points respectively.

Opensignal said that the higher scores would likely indicate that all smartphone users on the group video call would have an satisfactory experience.

"In our analysis, the results represent the likelihood that all smartphone users participating in a group video call of between two and eight people will have an adequate experience that will allow the call to run seamlessly, considering real-world measures of both the video and audio components of all the users on the call," Opensignal said in its report.

The company said that "congestion was indeed a factor" in disrupting the video calling experience and that the fluctuation was visible across most countries in the list. In Japan, the company said that the scores passed the 70-point mark between 4 a.m, to 8 a.m., with the scores dipping around the 65 point mark over the course of the day. Opensignal is said to have observed the lower scores in Japan around the lunch hour at noon due to the "large number of users consuming mobile data during their lunch break." In Pakistan and the U.S., the fluctuations in scores were said to be "much wider."

"We also observed that countries achieving higher group video calling scores generally had a more consistent experience across the day compared to countries with a lower score," Opensignal said in its report.

European Countries Dominated Opensignal Charts, 5G Elevates Rankings

The company highlighted that the countries in Europe occupied 12 spots out of the top 20, while Russia was said to be the only European country in the bottom 20 of its analysis. Crucially, Opensignal said that none of the "big five" European countries namely France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK figured inside its top 20 list.

"We observed evidence of a global divide between more industrialized economies, fast growing ones and developing countries when it comes to group video calling," Opensignal said in its report.

Further, the company also said that the video calling results measured on the 5G networks elevated the scores between 7.3 points and 20.2 points. Opensignal said that the scores on 5G represented an increase of 11.9% to 42.3% as compared to the scores on the 4G networks.

"Canada showed the highest improvement of 20.2 points between 4G and 5G group video calling scores, which were 47.9 points and 68.2 points, respectively," Opensignal said in its report.

Poco Laptop Might Launch in India Soon, Spotted in BIS Listings

poco-laptop-might-launch-in-india-soon

Poco separated from Xiaomi earlier this year. Since then, the company has launched multiple smartphones which were the rebranded versions of Xiaomi devices. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker might bring a new category of product to the Indian market. Poco is likely to launch a new laptop in India soon. This can be assumed through spotting of the Poco Laptop model numbers on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) listings. Precisely, two different laptops were spotted on the BIS listings as per a tweet from a famous tipster Mukul Sharma — more details on the story ahead.

Poco Laptops Might be Rebranded Mi Laptops After all

It is strange to see that Poco has separated from its parent brand yet keeps on launching rehashed versions of Xiaomi products. The company still relies on the product distribution channel of Xiaomi. Now, it is expected that the Poco Laptops which are going to launch soon are rebadged versions of Mi laptops. This is because the two laptops which were found on the BIS listing had model numbers – R15B02W and R14B02W and were listed with the branding of both Mi and Xiaomi.

The branding of the Mi and Poco both suggests that these two laptops which Poco is going to launch might be rebranded versions of Xiaomi laptops launched earlier this year. A thing worth noting is that this would be the first time Poco would be offering laptop to the users not only in India but around the world.

If the Poco laptops launch as rebadged versions of Xiaomi laptops, it wouldn't be too surprising since most of the Poco smartphones are rebranded versions of Xiaomi smartphones. As per a listing by AliExpress, the model number R15B02W is associated with the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15-inch whereas the other model number R14B02W might be a 14-inch model.

Both the laptops with these two model numbers are expected to launch in India market under the Poco brand. It is worth noting that Poco hasn't revealed or hinted anything about the presence of these two laptops. All of the information about a possible launch of Poco laptops in India are pure speculation looking at the model number listings on BIS.

If they do launch, they are expected to be budget-friendly laptops just like Xiaomi launched a few months back. Poco became an independent brand globally just last month. This laptop offering might be an attempt from the company to create its own identity and image at the market. Only time will tell if Poco laptops are indeed coming to India.

Twitter New Verification Policy to Come in Effect from January 20, 2021

twitter-new-verification-policy-memorial-account

A couple of weeks back, Twitter announced that it would be resuming its profile verification process with new updated policies. Now the social media giant has announced that its new profile verification policies will come into effect from January 20, 2021. For the unaware, Twitter ran a survey asking people on what they think the profile verification policy should look like. More than 22,000 responses were submitted to the company, and Twitter said that it helped them make their policy for verification process better. Keep reading ahead to see what areas of the profile verification policy are updated by Twitter based on the survey responses.

New Verification Policy for Twitter

We are going to be focusing on the policy areas where Twitter has made changes. The first change that Twitter has brought to the verification policy is that a profile can be called complete without any bio or header image. Secondly, Twitter has updated its references with Wikipedia so that the standards of notability and article quality are high.

The third change is that now the 'News' category will also include 'News and Journalists' followed by the 'Sports' category, which will also include 'Sports and esports'. The company also added a reference in its 'Entertainment' category so that the inclusion of digital content creators in the category is more solid. Twitter also changed its policy of looking for a minimum follower count from a 'per-country' basis to a 'per-region' basis.

Followed by the implementation of these new changes on January 20, 2021, the micro-blogging platform will also seek to include religious leaders, scientists, and academics into the profile verification categories next year.

Twitter to Remove Verification Badges from Existing Verified Accounts

With the implementation of these new policies, a lot of verified accounts might be losing their verification badges soon. All the incomplete and inactive account will lose the blue-tick. A complete Twitter account as per the new verification policies would mean an account which has a verified email address or phone number, a display name, and a profile image.

But the verified users don't need to worry. Before the removal of the verification badge, Twitter will send a notification about the same for changes that need to be made in the profile. If the changes are made in time, the verification status will remain.

As for people who are no longer alive, to remember them, Twitter will verify their account with a 'Memorial' badge. It has plans for adding two new types of accounts, namely 'Automated Accounts' for identifying bot accounts and 'Memorial Accounts' for identifying accounts of people who have passed away.

You can find all the new verification policies of Twitter here.

Telecom Network Gear Might be Sourced from Chinese Vendors Upon a Condition

telecom-network-gear-chinese-vendors-zte-huawei

Since the time border tensions between India and China increased, the government has been trying to push Chinese products and companies out of the Indian market. Supporting that move, telecom operators of the country have been actively removing the Chinese gear and equipment from their network. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) has no plans of awarding or renewing any contracts for ZTE or Huawei. The government hasn't explicitly put the Chinese vendors in the 'no-trust' list yet, but it is going to release a list regarding the same information soon — more details on the story ahead.

Chinese Vendors Might be Able to Supply Up to 30% of the Network Gear

As per an ET Telecom report, once the Chinese vendors ZTE and Huawei are removed from the Indian telecom space, it would become 5% to 10% more expensive for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to procure telecom gear from the other trust-worthy vendors.

The higher cost of procurement won't be a burden for the operators since the upcoming tariff hike would more than cover for it. It is expected the both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea can gain up to 20% higher average revenue per user (ARPU) in the financial year 2021-22 with the help of higher ARPUs.

However, it might still be possible that the government doesn't go all guns out blazing on the Chinese vendors. There is a distinct possibility of them being able to provide up to 30% of the network gear used by the telecom operators in India.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the deputy national security advisor are going to be discussing the list of trust-worthy vendors through which Indian operators can buy their network gear or equipment. The list is expected to be out soon.

Even though the list might not mention the Chinese vendors as trust-worthy, it might still allow them to contribute up to 30% of the network gear. However, this 30% gear won't come under the critical equipment category.

For a network to operate, there are two types of telecom gear or equipment required, one is critical and one is supplementary. The critical gear is used for the brain of the network whereas the supplementary gear is used for building and supporting the network's functioning. Thus, the government might just allow the Indian telcos to source up to 30% of their non-critical network equipment from non-trustworthy vendors.

Such a move would let the operators keep working with ZTE and Huawei in India.

Android 11 Update for OnePlus 7 & 7T Series Delayed

Posted: 17 Dec 2020 09:13 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/android-11-update-oneplus-7-series/318088/, Android 11 Update for OnePlus 7 & 7T Series Delayed

OnePlus already pushed the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 update to its current flagship smartphone OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8. The recently launched OnePlus 8T arrived with Android 11 out of the box. Now, all the eyes will be on the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7 series of phones. OnePlus apparently ran into a major decrypting data issue which means the update for the previous generation OnePlus flagships will be delayed. The company announced this news on OnePlus Forums in China and it is for HydrogenOS. Since OnePlus uses the same codebase for HydrogenOS and OxygenOS, the Android 11 update for global OnePlus 7 & 7T series will also be delayed. The Chinese company said it is working with Qualcomm for a resolution, as of this writing.

OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and 7T Pro Android 11 Update Delayed

The four devices- the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T and the OnePlus 7T Pro, were originally slated to get Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 update this month. However, that seems unlikely now as the company ran into a software issue (decrypting data) on Android 11. OnePlus, in the forum post, also said it is working on a resolution with Qualcomm and the issue might be resolved within this week. If OnePlus manages to resolve the issue, we could see the company rolling out the first closed beta HydrogenOS 11 and OxygenOS 11 update to the four phones. But again, the closed beta release will entirely depend on how quickly OnePlus fixes the data decrypting issue.

This news will come as an unfortunate one for the OnePlus 7 and 7T series owners. OnePlus did a great job is pushing the Android 11 update to OnePlus 8 series within one month of the rollout, and even its latest OnePlus 8T is running Android 11 right out of the box.

The OnePlus 7T series arrived with Android 10 out of the box, whereas the OnePlus 7 series ran Android 9 Pie and later upgraded to Android 10 in September last year.

OnePlus’ woes this year extend further with the delay of Android 11 update for OnePlus 7 & 7T devices. Very recently, it said the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100 would get only one platform update. And yes, the company is yet to release Android 11 update to the popular OnePlus Nord smartphone.

To recall, the OnePlus 6 and 6T picked up Android 10 update in October 2019. We are already past halfway through December and the company now announced a software issue that delayed the Android 11 for OnePlus 7 range of devices. Hopefully, OnePlus fixes the issue and releases the update at the earliest.

WhatsApp Calls Now Available for Select Web Users

Posted: 17 Dec 2020 07:59 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/whatsapp-calls-web-users-availability/318061/, WhatsApp Calls Now Available for Select Web Users

WhatsApp has been working on bringing voice calling support to its Web/Desktop clients for a while now. And it seems to be finally happening. Few WhatsApp users have spotted voice and video call icons on the Web, and WABetaInfo says it is part of the WhatsApp Beta Calls. This essentially means the feature will be rolled to all the users very soon. Ever since it launched, WhatsApp Web has been one of the most used features on the instant messaging platform. Apart from the standard web client, WhatsApp has desktop apps for macOS and Windows as well. WhatsApp users can scan the QR code and log into Web client or Desktop app.

WhatsApp Voice & Video Calls on Web: How It Works?

It seems like WhatsApp will name the voice & video calling feature on Web/Desktop as ‘WhatsApp Calls,’ and it makes complete sense. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp Calls is currently visible to select users, but it is part of the company’s beta testing. Both the voice and video calling buttons are visible on the header of the chat screen on WhatsApp Web. If a user receives video or voice call, a new pop-up window will open with options of accept and decline the call. Once the user attends the call, the pop-up box will display the options of switching to video call, mute the call and end the call.

Similar to standard WhatsApp Web, users are required to keep their mobile phone in which WhatsApp mobile app is installed connected to the internet. Users will only be able to make or receive voice/video calls from WhatsApp Web if their mobile phone is connected to the internet and it communicates with the machine in which the Web version is opened.

As noted, the feature is currently being rolled out to select users, so there are very slim chances of you getting the feature today. We have checked the feature’s availability on our MacBook Air’s both Web and Desktop apps, but it was not available as of this writing.

At the moment, it is unknown whether the company plans to add the group voice and video calling feature to WhatsApp Web. Ever since rolling out WhatsApp Web, the Facebook-owned company did not add any significant features to the platform, which is surprising. So the addition of voice & video calling support will surely attract a lot of users out there. Will you use the calling feature on WhatsApp Web? Let us know by commenting below.

Vodafone Idea Starts Offering Digital Exclusive Rs 399 Plan to New Users

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-digital-exclusive-plan/318050/, Vodafone Idea Starts Offering Digital Exclusive Rs 399 Plan to New Users

Vodafone Idea has expanded its online prepaid SIM delivery service in the country. Alongside the expansion, Vi is now offering a new Rs 399 ‘Digital Exclusive’ prepaid plan to the customers who order a SIM card online from the company’s website. The Rs 399 recharge is a unique offering from the brand because the ‘First Recharge (FRC)’ plans offered by Airtel and Vi are priced slightly on the higher side. The FRC plans offered by Vi are Rs 97, Rs 197, Rs 297, Rs 497 and Rs 647. The Rs 399 recharge comes with 1.5GB data per day for 56 days. For the users who purchase a new Vi SIM card by heading over to the company’s offline store will not be eligible for the Rs 399 recharge. Instead, they will be presented with the five other FRCs mentioned above. The telco also says a whopping three lakh customers showed interest in Vi over the last three days.

Vodafone Idea Offering Rs 399 Plan to New MNP/Regular Users

Vi is doing everything possible to grab new customers and also to retain the existing customers. The new effort from the telco is to offer the Rs 399 recharge to new MNP/regular customers as well. The Rs 399 prepaid recharge from Vi is already available for existing customers, and it ships with 1.5GB data per day, unlimited voice calling and 100 SMSes per day for 56 days.

That said, telecom operators like Airtel and Vi generally offer five FRCs priced at Rs 97, Rs 197, Rs 297, Rs 497 and Rs 647. And the Rs 399 recharge applies to the users who book a new Vi connection from the company’s website. This is the reason why Vi is calling the plans as ‘Digital Exclusive.’

Besides the Rs 399 plan, the company is also offering Rs 297 recharge for the users who book a new connection online. The Rs 297 pack comes with 1.5GB data per day, unlimited voice calling and 100 SMSes per day for 28 days. Furthermore, Vi is now delivering new SIM cards to more locations across India. Earlier, the Vi SIM card delivery service was not available in Telangana state, but now, it is available and that too across a majority of PIN codes.

Vodafone Idea also says a total of 3,13,447 customers showed interest in the telco during the last three years. But it did not provide an exact number of connections booked online. Interested customers can head over to Vodafone Idea’s website to book a new connection. Do make a note that the telco is providing new connections to both MNP and regular customers. MNP customers will have to provide their existing mobile number while booking the connection, whereas new customers will be presented to choose a Vi mobile number.
