Homegrown smartphone brand Lava has launched a new smartphone called ‘Lava BeU’ with Android 10 (Go Edition) OS. The Lava BeU is an entry-level smartphone taking on the likes of Redmi 9A, Realme C11 and Micromax In 1b smartphones. The smartphone comes powered by octa-core Unisoc SC9863A chipset, paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. We haven’t seen many brands using Unisoc SC9863A chipset, so it will be interesting to see how the Lava BeU performs in real life. Other key specifications of the handset include a 13MP primary camera on the back, 4060mAh battery and a 6-inch screen. The handset will be available for purchase via both offline and online channels.

Lava BeU: Specifications and Features

Starting with the display, the Lava BeU flaunts a 6.08-inch HD+ screen with a resolution of 720×1560 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. The phone has a teardrop notch on top and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. At the heart of the phone is the 1.6GHz octa-core Unisoc SC9863A chipset, clubbed with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The handset has IMG8322 GPU. There’s a microSD card slot as well for storage expansion.

As for the cameras, we are looking at a 13MP primary snapper on the back with f/1.85 aperture, LED flash, and a 2MP depth sensor accompanies the primary shooter. To the front of the phone is an 8MP shooter with an f/2.2 aperture. The handset has a fingerprint scanner mounted on the back and it boots Android 10 (Go Edition) out of the box.

Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G LTE, VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and a Micro USB port that can be used for charging the smartphone and data transfer. Lastly, Lava has added a 4060mAh battery to the Lava BeU. The company did not reveal any fast charging support.

Lava BeU: Pricing and Availability in India

As we all know, Google made it mandatory for smartphone brands to use Android Go Edition on devices with 2GB of RAM and less. This is the reason why the Lava BeU runs Android 10 (Go Edition) software. This case is very identical to that of Micromax In 1b’s 2GB RAM variant that also runs Android Go Edition.

Lava will sell the BeU for Rs 6,888 and the handset can be picked up via online and offline stores soon. The company is also expected to launch more devices in the first week of January 2021.

Xiaomi Mi 10i Likely to Launch in India on January 5

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/xiaomi-mi-10i-january-5-launch/319166/, Xiaomi Mi 10i Likely to Launch in India on January 5

Xiaomi India sent out media invites for a smartphone launch on January 5. The invite confirms the upcoming phone will have a 108MP camera and it could be the rumoured Xiaomi Mi 10i. Ever since Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G in China, rumours are rife regarding the Mi 10i’s launch in India. The Mi 10i will just be a rebranded Redmi Note Pro 5G with a 108MP primary sensor on the back, Snapdragon 750G SoC and a 120Hz refresh rate screen. The Mi 10i already popped up on Google Play Console listings and Geekbench benchmarking website. If Xiaomi launches the Mi 10i in India on January 5, it will be the second phone with Snapdragon 750G SoC in the country, as the first phone with the said chipset is Moto G 5G.

Xiaomi Mi 10i India Launch: What to Expect?

Since the Mi 10i is widely expected to be a rebranded version of Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, we have an idea of what to expect from the smartphone. The phone will rock a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display and 120Hz refresh rate. At the heart of the phone is Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will also be Xiaomi’s first mid-range smartphone to offer 5G support.

The USP of the Mi 10i, however, will be the 108MP quad-camera setup. The Mi 10i is the first mid-range smartphone to rock the 108MP primary camera sensor on the back. Other camera sensors on the rear include 13MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a couple of 2MP sensors. To the front, it has a 16MP snapper for capturing selfies and attending video calls.

The Mi 10i will likely boot Android 11-based MIUI 12 out of the box. It will have a 4820mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. Xiaomi has added a side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, so we can expect the same on Mi 10i as well.

The Mi 10i will be the first phone in India to launch under Rs 30,000 with a 108MP camera sensor. The cheapest phone in India with the said sensor is also Xiaomi’s Mi 10T that’s priced at Rs 39,999. We saw Motorola launching the Snapdragon 750G-powered Moto G 5G at Rs 20,999, but the inclusion of 108MP sensor on the Mi 10i means it will be priced around the Rs 25,000 mark. But again, these are just our thoughts, and we have to wait to see how aggressive Xiaomi gets in pricing the Mi 10i.

vodafone-idea-prepaid-plans-double-data-offer

Vodafone Idea (Vi) provides its users with a 'Double Data Offer'. No other operator in the Indian telecom space provides the users with such an offer. For the unaware, under the Double Data Offer, the daily data which the user is supposed to receive doubles in amount. For example, if the user purchases a plan with which he/she is supposed to get 1.5GB daily data and if the plan comes with the Double Data Offer, then instead of 1.5GB daily data, the user would get 3GB daily data for the validity of the plan. This offer is only clubbed with unlimited prepaid plans. Keep reading ahead to find out about the plans.

All the Vodafone Prepaid Plans which Offer Double Data

As of now, Vi provides users with only three plans which come with the Double Data Offer. These three plans are of Rs 299, 449, and Rs 699. Each of these plans come with unique data benefits; let's take a look at all of them.

Vodafone Idea Rs 299 Prepaid Plan

The Rs 299 prepaid plan comes with the Double Data Offer. It ships with 4GB daily data (2GB data without the offer) and carries a validity of only 28 days. Users are also entitled to receive the benefit of unlimited voice calling to any network within India and 100 SMS/day. There is also an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Vi Movies & TV offered with the plan.

Vodafone Idea Rs 449 Prepaid Plan

The Rs 449 prepaid plan from Vodafone Idea provides users with 4GB daily data under the Double Data Offer (2GB without the offer). Also, it gives them the benefit of unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. Users get a free OTT subscription of Vi Movies & TV. This plan, however, has a longer validity of 56 days than the Rs 299 plan which comes with a validity of only 28 days.

Vodafone Idea Rs 699 Prepaid Plan

It is the last prepaid plan from the telco which gives users the 'Double Data Offer'. It also offers the same 4GB daily data (2GB without the offer) as the other plans mentioned above. The benefits included are the same – unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day along with a free subscription of Vi Movies & TV platform. However, it has the longest validity of 84 days amongst the three.

One thing worth noting here is that all of these plans also come with the Weekend Data Rollover offer. It is an offer introduced by Vi, which lets users carry forward all the unused data from the week to weekends.

vi-partners-with-firework-to-entertain-users

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has just announced its partnership with Firework, deemed as the world's largest short story publishing platform. It is a strategic partnership between both the companies aimed to deliver quick entertainment to the users in India. Vi is looking to entertain its users in 30 seconds with the help of short, quirky videos present in the platform of Firework. Firework is a story publishing platform based out of Silicon Valley. The telco is looking to offer an exceptional customer experience to the users with this partnership — more details on the story ahead.

Vi Becomes the First Indian Telco to Partner With Firework and Offer Short Stories to Users

With this partnership, Vi has become the first operator in the Indian telecom industry to offer users content in short stories format. Telecom operators globally already offer content in such a format to their users, but Vi is the first to do so in India.

Vi believes that content in short story format will lead to higher user engagement rates. The telco will be able to leverage the humongous content library of Firework to entertain its users quickly and also be able to access unique occupational generated content (OGC) creators. These creators are known for their expertise in making highly engaging content in a wide genre of subjects.

Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Vi, noted the change in user behaviour that has been evident in the last few years. Users are engaging more with short-form content than the long-form. Thus the concept of Firework can be leveraged by Vi to increase its user engagement.

There will be a wide variety of genre and content available for the users to select through and get entertained from. The highlight of the content delivered by Firework is that it will come in vertical form. Vertical short-form content is the most effective method in communicating a story in today's fast-paced world.

Users of Vi won't have to download another app to stream through the vertical short-form content of Firework. The President of Mobile at Firework, Anand Vidyanand, said that the users would be able to select through a total of 40 different categories of content.

There is also content in different languages available inside the platform to ensure that there is something for every user of Vi. This move also stands to benefit Firework since it will now get more exposure to the new Indian creators and be able to understand and penetrate the Indian market in a better way.

Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster on Monday announced that three new channels have secured slots on its DD Free Dish platform, the free Direct-to-Home (DTH) service. The public service broadcaster highlighted that the three channels including Star Utsav Movies, Sony Wah and Filmachi secured the vacant MPEG-2 slots through the 50th e-auction held on Monday. Prasar Bharati earlier on December 15, 2020, had invited applications from broadcasters to "fill up vacant MPEG 2 slots of DD Free Dish on pro rata basis" through the 50th e-auction.

DD Free Dish Set to Welcome Three Channels

Star Utsav Movies, a Hindi movies channel was launched by Star India in mid-2016 with the broadcaster targeting the rural market. In a release in May, 2016, Star India said that the Star Utsav Movies will be India's first "truly rural" Hindi movie channel.

Similarly, Sony Wah, a Hindi movies channel was launched by Sony Pictures Networks in mid-2016 also targeting viewers in small towns and rural areas across the country. Further, Filamachi, a Bhojpuri movie channel was launched by IN10 Media Network in early 2020.

Prasar Bharati in a release said that the three channels will be available for a period from December 29, 2020 to March 31, 2021.

In its notice in mid-December, the public service broadcaster highlighted its reserve price for various channels on the basis of their genres. Prasar Bharati had set a reserve price of Rs 4.10 crores for all Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) while the Hindi movies channels were required to pay Rs 3.51 crores. The Hindi music channels along with Hindi sports and Bhojpuri GEC and movie channels had a reserve price of Rs 3.17 crores.

Prasar Bharati Invites Applications for 51st E-auction

Meanwhile, the public service broadcaster on Monday in a notice invited applications from broadcasters for the "allotment of vacant MPEG-4 slots" on the DD Free Dish platform. Prasar Bharati said that the 51st e-auction is scheduled to be held tentatively on December 28, 2020. It was said that the slots won through the 51st e-auction will be valid from January 1, 2021 to March 31, 2021.

The public service broadcaster said that "bidding in the e-auction" is open to all genre channels at a base reserve price of Rs 28.91 lakhs. It has to be noted that over 20 channels have secured slots on the DD Free Dish platform since early June including Star Utsav and Colors Rishtey.

samsung-tv-plus-to-arrive-in-india-soon

People all the world have shifted and upgraded to better entertainment standards. Over-the-top (OTT) content platforms now offer content in full HD and 4K quality to the users. Smart TVs are becoming a common sight in Indian households, thus giving rise to more and more OTT platforms in the country. Another streaming platform is all set to make its debut in the Indian market in 2021. It is the 'Samsung TV Plus' platform which has partnered with multiple broadcasters to offer free content to the users — more details on the story ahead.

Samsung TV Plus to Offer Free Content to Users

In a recent release, Samsung announced that it will be rolling out the Samsung TV Plus platform to users in India, Sweden, Mexico, and some other European countries in 2021. Samsung TV Plus has joined hands with approximately 300 broadcasting partners to provide content to the users without charging a fee against it.

But the service will only be available to the Samsung Smart TV users. The platform is already available for the users in Canada, France, Austria, Italy, Germany, Spain, Korea, Switzerland, the US, and the UK. Much recently, Brazil and Australia also got the service of Samsung TV Plus. So for now, it is only these 10 countries where Samsung is offering the streaming platform. But very soon, it will be in multiple more countries, including India.

The differentiating factor between Samsung TV Plus and other OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, and more is 'money involved'. For Indians who own a Samsung Smart TV, they will be able to stream content from the platform without having to pay anything extra for it. At the same time, other OTT platforms mentioned above are chargeable.

However, there is one more difference between these platforms. The Samsung TV Plus is exclusively offered to Samsung Smart TV owners, whereas the other platforms can be accessed by anyone willing to pay for it.

For the unaware, Samsung TV Plus was launched for the users back in 2015. Since then, it has been a slow but steady rollout of the platform by Samsung to other countries. The streaming platform includes channels such as PeopleTV, ET Live, CBSN, Nick Pluto TV, Cheddar, ABC News Live, and USA Today in the US. There are multiple other standalone shows available for the users in the streaming platform.

Future Samsung Galaxy models are also said to come with support for Samsung TV Plus.

Government Eyeing to Increase Public Wi-Fi Access in India by End of 2021

government-eyeing-to-increase-public-wi-fi-access

The Indian government is working towards building 2 million Wi-Fi hotspots in the country by the end of 2021. Anshu Prakash, secretary of telecom department, said that the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM Wani) initiative is all set to launch and registrations for it will start from the first week of January 2021. The initiative aims to boost the drive of the government's 'Digital India' vision. Very soon, multiple new Wi-Fi hotspots around the country will be available for the users to connect with and browse the internet — more details on the story ahead.

Anyone Can Register For Becoming a PDOA

As per a report from ET Telecom, Prakash said that C-DoT, a technology part of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working towards availing the 'Wi-Fi Access Boxes' to the concerned parties at half the market price.

The great thing is anyone can register as a Public Data Operator Aggregator (PDOA) once the service is live. To register, all a person needs to do is fill the form by going to the central registry portal. In case there is no response against the form within 7 days of submission, it will be deemed as approved.

So what will be the job of a PDOA? He/she will have to partner or collaborate with small businesses to install Wi-Fi access points so they can provide hotspots in the public areas and improve connectivity overall. These entrepreneurs will be recognised as Public Data Operators (PDOs).

There is no limitation for becoming a PDO. PDOs can be small business owners, grocery store owners, restaurant owners, etc. The best thing is that there is no registration or licence required for the same. One thing to note here is that PDOs will have to purchase their bandwidth from the telcos which they can resell to other users.

Prakash noted that the stakeholders of PM Wani initiative are currently in talks with ISPs and telcos so that the process can start as soon as possible. The PDOAs will give all the backend support to PDOs.

The C-DoT has developed a complete platform for PDOAs from where they can access applications for accounting, authorisations, payment gateways and more. Prakash said that any registered PDOA can take services from the C-DoT whenever they wish.

People who want to access public Wi-Fi will have to go and open the Wani app wherein they will see a list of available networks. They can choose from either of the networks based on their user experience ratings. To get the service, users will have to buy an internet voucher.

Upgradation of 2G Subscribers to 4G Could Result in ARPU Increase for Telcos: ICRA

Posted: 21 Dec 2020 09:40 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/2g-user-upgradation-arpu-increase-icra/319064/, Upgradation of 2G Subscribers to 4G Could Result in ARPU Increase for Telcos: ICRA

The focus of telecom operators at the moment is entirely on increasing the Average Revenue per User (ARPU). Before the entry of Reliance Jio, the ARPU of telcos like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular used to be between Rs 200 and Rs 250. However, it dipped to less than Rs 150 in recent years thanks to the low-cost tariff plans. The effect of tariff hike that happened in December 2019 is showing up as Airtel’s ARPU increased to Rs 162 in the quarter that ended on September 30, 2020. Reliance Jio also showed some increase in ARPU increase during the July-September 2020 quarter. ICRA now predicts that the ARPU of telcos will rise to Rs 220 on the backing of 2G to 4G subscriber upgrading and another tariff hike that’s right around the corner.

ARPU Could Increase to Rs 220 on the Backing of 2G to 4G Customer Upgradation

In the quarter that ended on September 30, Bharti Airtel reported an increase of 14.4 million in 4G user base which is staggering as Jio managed to add just around eight million 4G users during the same period. Anupama Arora, Vice President and Sector Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA Ltd, mentioned that the 2G subscriber migration to 4G would help telcos increase the ARPU to Rs 220 in the mid-term. He also added that the tariff hike would be crucial for all the telcos.

He also stated that telcos have a large number of pay-outs towards spectrum purchase, AGR dues, and so on. So the pay-outs mean the telcos will have to maintain a sustainable ARPU. “The ARPU expansion will result in revenue growth and given the high operating leverage, the margins are also expected to expand. These measures are expected to translate into an improvement in the debt coverage metrics of the industry, even as the overall debt remains high,” Anupama Arora, as reported by ET Telecom.

The industry revenue will likely grow by 11-13% over the next couple of years, according to ICRA. The firm also predicts the operating margins of telcos will likely show an improvement of around 38% for FY22. ICRA further says the overall telecom industry debt to remain at Rs 4.7 lakh crore.

Despite the tariff hike that happened last year, India still has one of the lowest tariff plans in the world. And the same will continue after the upcoming tariff hike. Vodafone Idea already showed the first signs of tariff hike by increasing the prices of entry-level postpaid plans. Analysts predict Vi will hike the tariffs first, whereas Airtel and Jio will watch the industry closely before hiking the prices.

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel is finally opening the Airtel Xstream streaming service to non-Airtel customers. For the unaware, the Airtel Xstream service was limited to Bharti Airtel customers till date. The Airtel Xstream App Premium subscription costs Rs 499 for the customers who are not on an eligible plan. Now, the non-Airtel customers interested in Airtel Xstream service can purchase it at the same price of Rs 499. Airtel Xstream is a streaming service from the country’s second-largest telecom operator, and it allows the users to watch Live TV, movies, original shows and more. Right now, the Airtel Xstream service has more 350 Live TV channels on offer; The Live TV channel list grows every now and then.

Airtel Xstream Subscription: What You Get

Earlier, the Airtel Xstream subscription was limited to the company’s prepaid, postpaid, DTH and broadband subscribers. With some postpaid and broadband plans, Airtel is providing the Xstream Premium subscription at no extra cost. However, the majority of Airtel users were required to purchase the subscription to enjoy and download premium content in the Airtel Xstream app and website.

The Rs 499 price for Airtel Xstream Premium subscription is for one year. It is a good move from the company because of the Live TV support. The company says the Rs 499 price is an ‘introductory one.’ While the mobile app has over 350 Live TV channels, the web version of Airtel Xstream has just over 100 Live TV channels. Airtel also says it has added 73 new Live TV channels across sports, entertainment and news genres. The Live TV channels on Airtel Xstream are available in different languages like English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Assamese, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Urdu.

It also has catch up TV support with which a user can watch the TV shows from the last seven days.

Unlike Reliance Jio which has multiple apps for watching Live TV and movies, the Airtel Xstream is a one-stop solution to the customers. The best part is Airtel Xstream mobile app also supports Chromecast, meaning you can cast the content you like on your television screen without any hassle. Both the non-Airtel and Airtel customers can purchase the Airtel Xstream subscription at an introductory price of Rs 499.
