Raids carried out by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in South Mumbai over the last couple of days has led to the removal of 68 illegal mobile signal boosters. With this development, the DoT has ordered/asked the e-commerce websites to remove the listings of mobile signal boosters with immediate effect. The DoT said it conducted multiple raids on the back of receiving poor network coverage complaints from the users in South Mumbai. The Wireless Monitoring Organisation of telecom department carried out these raids. The DoT has been actively inspecting in various locations for illegal use of mobile signal boosters. In November 2020, the DoT uncovered 33 illegal signal boosters used by individuals to boost their mobile connectivity in New Delhi. DoT Issues Order to E-Commerce Website for Removing Signal Booster ListingsAs we are aware of already, mobile signal boosters reduce the overall service quality provided by a telecom operator. An official statement from DoT said mobile network boosters are becoming a major reason for poor service quality from telcos. This is the reason behind the DoT asking e-commerce websites to pull down the listings of signal boosters. “Online platforms have also been issued notices to remove listings of illegal repeaters from their website and such companies have responded positively,” said Amit Gautam, part of Wireless Monitoring Organisation. This news is first reported by Press Trust of India. The Wireless Monitoring Organisation has conducted raids on December 22 and 23 in South Mumbai’s LT Marg, Masjid Bunder, Bhoiwada, Zaveri Bazar, Kolsa Street, Nagdevi Street, Abdul Rahman Street, Narayan Dhuru Street and Sarang Street. Similarly, it also conducted raids across Agra and Mathura as well. At the beginning of November 2020, the Wireless Monitoring Organisation conducted inspections in New Delhi during which it brought down 33 illegal repeaters. So far, 68 illegal mobile signal boosters were brought down, and the most interesting part is the devices were made in China with no safety standard mark. Since using mobile signal boosters is illegal in India, the DoT is taking every step to uncovering these repeaters. Furthermore, Amit Gautam said the DoT would take legal action against the vendors who are selling this illegal equipment in India. “Our department has taken a very serious view on the installation of illegal repeaters as it has become a major obstruction in providing quality telecom services and clean spectrum,” he added. The DoT also highlighted that the usage of mobile signal boosters is leading to major call drops and lower data speeds on telecom networks. Due to the installation of these network repeaters, other customers of telcos are registering complaints of poor network quality. | Reliance Jio Prepaid Plans Which Offer Bonus Data to the Users Posted: 24 Dec 2020 04:27 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-prepaid-plans-bonus-data/319582/, Reliance Jio Prepaid Plans Which Offer Bonus Data to the Users
Reliance Jio offers users a plethora of prepaid plans to choose from. The telecom operator has modified its prepaid offerings multiple times now. Users can get over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP with select prepaid plans and data vouchers. Today, we will be focusing on all the prepaid plans from Reliance Jio, which offer bonus data to the users. Bonus data here means more high-speed data than the daily fair usage policy (FUP) limit. The telco offers three such plans to the users — keep reading ahead to find out which plans they are and what benefits they provide. Reliance Jio Rs 401 Prepaid PlanThe Rs 401 prepaid plan from Reliance Jio provides users with 3GB daily FUP data. Adding to this, there is unlimited Jio-to-Jio voice calling along with 1,000 FUP calling minutes for Jio-to-non Jio calls. Users also get 100 SMS/day along with a complimentary subscription of all the Jio apps and a free OTT benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP for one year. Since this plan provides users with a total of 90GB data for 28 days (validity period of the plan), it means that there is 6GB of bonus data included in the plan. Because going with 3GB daily data for 28 days would mean 84GB data and not 90GB. Reliance Jio Rs 777 Prepaid PlanThe Rs 777 plan from Reliance Jio offers users 1.5GB daily FUP data and a total of 131GB data for 84 days. When calculated, it would appear that users are getting 5GB extra data against what they should get with the mentioned daily FUP data limit. This 5GB data here is bonus data offered to the users by the telco. There is, of course, unlimited voice calling and 3,000 FUP minutes for making Jio-to-non Jio calls along with 100 SMS/day and a complimentary subscription of all the Jio apps. Users also get a free subscription of Disney+ Hotstar VIP for one year. Reliance Jio Rs 2,599 Prepaid PlanThis is the last prepaid plan from the telco which offers users unlimited data. With this plan, users get 2GB daily FUP data, 740GB data for a year or 365 days (validity of the plan). This equates to 10GB bonus data since going with the math, 2GB, daily data for 365 days, would mean 730GB data, not 740GB. Users get unlimited voice calling with 12,000 FUP minutes for making Jio-to-non Jio calls and 100 SMS/day with a complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps. There is also an OTT benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP. Original article: Reliance Jio Prepaid Plans Which Offer Bonus Data to the Users ©2020 TelecomTalk. All Rights Reserved. |
| Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to Submit Details of Segmented Offers Later Posted: 24 Dec 2020 03:11 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bharti-airtel-vodafone-idea-segmented-offers/319544/, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to Submit Details of Segmented Offers Later
A couple of days back, an order was issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) asking them to submit all the details regarding the segmented offers provided to the users within a limited number of days. The last date for the telcos as per the Trai order was December 20, 2020. Today is December 24, 2020, and the telcos haven't submitted the details of their segmented offers yet. This means Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have missed their deadline that Trai had asked them to follow — more details on the story ahead. Airtel and Vi Seek for More Time to Comply With the OrderNow, as per a report from the Economic Times, the telcos have asked for extra time from Trai to comply with the order. The regulator had asked both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to submit the details of the segmented offers they provided to their users in the January to November 2020 period. The telcos had initially not shown any interest in doing so. But when the regulator managed to side the Supreme Court towards its decision, operators didn't have a choice anymore. Telcos had argued that if they share the details of their segmented offers, it will expose their plans to their competitors which would be unfair to them. Thus the Supreme Court had asked the regulator to keep all of the details and information received from the operators confidential and out of reach of anyone who can exploit it to their advantage. Later, Trai sent out direct notices to the operators saying that it requires details of all the segmented offers made to the users between the January and November 2020 period, 10 working days before the year ends. Since the order came around early December, the telcos didn't have much time on their hands. Now, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have asked for extra time to comply with the regulator's order. More specifically, the telcos require at least one more month to be able to do that. A Trai official had earlier said that the reason behind asking for the details of all the segmented offers in the concerned period is to ensure complete transparency is maintained. If complete transparency is maintained, it will help the regulator ensure that there is no discrimination in the offers provided to the same class of customers. The telcos haven’t given a specific date as to when they will be able to provide the concerned details to the regulator. Bharti Airtel Now Has More Active Users Than Reliance JioIn its report, ICICI Securities highlighted that the industry-wide active subscriber base increased by 2.5 million in October, 2020, with Airtel topping the charts with its 3 million gross subscriber additions. Airtel is now said to have 320 million active subscribers as of October while Reliance Jio active subscriber base is said to have increased by 1.1 million to 319 million. "Its [Reliance Jio] subs addition has been muted compared to historic average post the tariff hike in Nov'19," ICICI Securities said in its report. "Total subs addition has also been subdued at 2.2mn. RJio's net add has been losing steam, and this may also hasten the launch of low-end smartphone." ICICI Securities said that Reliance Jio has lost most subscribers in Bihar, it's largest circle with the operator's user base dipping by 2.1 million in October. The company also said that the increase in Airtel's active subscriber base was aided by its net subscriber additions "thus indicating improving quality of subs addition." Crucially, ICICI Securities said that the Airtel witnessed its highest subscriber additions for the month in its "traditionally weak circles" of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Further, Motilal Oswal in a report on Wednesday also said that Airtel's "quality of subscribers is reflected in its strong" mobile broadband subscriber additions of 4.2 million in October. The firm engaged in financial services said that Airtel's mobile broadband subscriber additions has resulted in the operator taking up 59% incremental subscriber market share in the segment. Vodafone Idea Subscriber Base Declined at Lower PaceMeanwhile, ICICI Securities in its report said that the Vodafone Idea's active subscriber base has "continued to decline, but at lower pace" in October as compared to earlier months. The third largest wireless operator in India is said to have lost 1.2 million active users, with its active subscriber base hitting 260 million as of October. Vodafone Idea's total subscriber base is also said to have declined by 2.7 million in the month. "[Vodafone] Idea continued its losing streak, though the decline in gross/active subscribers decelerated," Motilal Oswal said in its report. "We attribute the continuous loss of subscribers to its weak network capabilities and speculation around business continuity." | Telegram Voice Chats Feature Along With SD Card Storage Facility Rolled Out Posted: 23 Dec 2020 11:25 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/telegram-voice-chats-feature-sd-card-update/319528/, Telegram Voice Chats Feature Along With SD Card Storage Facility Rolled Out
Telegram has started rolling out a new update with voice chats support and SD card storage for Android devices. It is worth noting that this is the 12th update which the social media giant has released this year. To enhance the quality and experience of group chats, Telegram will now allow users to voice chat. There is a stark difference between audio messages and voice chat. While you have to record an audio message, voice chat is done live, much like a voice call, but totally different. Keep reading ahead to find out more about the feature. Telegram Voice Chats FeatureAfter the update, any Telegram group can become a voice chat room. Voice chat rooms aren't a totally different space, but they run parallel to the existing media and text group. To keep it simple, voice chat rooms are a layer above the normal chat group. While people can talk in groups here, it is not a group voice call exactly. Because no one is actually calling anyone here, anyone in the group can individually join or leave the chat room anytime they wish. Whenever a voice chat room is active, a special bar at the top of the group will appear. This bar will display the person talking and even hint about how loud they are. Users will be able to identify who is speaking and thus will be able to smartly choose when they should join and speak what they have to speak. Users are allowed to move around the application freely while on the chat room. They can stay in the chat room and still text or send other forms of messages to their contacts. For Android users, a special floating widget will appear on the home screen if they exit the app but still want to stay in the chat room to listen to what others are speaking. Users are even allowed to unmute or mute themselves while on other apps according to their convenience. Other Telegram UpdatesTelegram has rolled out more features with the update. Now, Android users can store their Telegram data in a local SD card as well, which they can transfer to other devices if they wish to. The Android app has got new and better animations along with fresh emojis. Telegram has also added a 'Feature Suggestion Platform' that will allow users to suggest new features and report bugs. | BSNL Lost 50,000 Broadband Users in October; Jio and Airtel Gain New Customers Posted: 23 Dec 2020 09:44 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-broadband-users-lose-october/319503/, BSNL Lost 50,000 Broadband Users in October; Jio and Airtel Gain New Customers
The Trai released its monthly subscription data for October 2020 and we have already reported the monthly numbers for telecom operators. The report also has the numbers achieved by wired broadband service providers. Leading Internet Service Provider (ISP) BSNL lost 50,000 existing customers during the month, whereas private ISPs- Airtel Xstream Fiber and JioFiber gained subscribers. The Trai data conflicts the report which emerged recently saying BSNL added over 85,000 new broadband users in October. BSNL’ wired broadband subscriber base dipped to 7.75 million at the end of October 2020 from 7.80 million at the end of September 2020. On the other hand, Airtel Xstream Fiber (Bharti Airtel) user base increased to 2.67 million from 2.60 million. BSNL Continues to Lose Broadband Users Despite Launching Affordable PlansBSNL introduced affordable and aggressive broadband plans to counter JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber at the beginning of October. A Business Line report at the end of November highlighted that BSNL installed more than 85,000 FTTH connections on the backing of new Bharat Fiber plans which start at Rs 449. And the report also said the ISP was targeting to install one lakh new connections in November. The Trai data for October says otherwise. BSNL lost 50,000 existing FTTH users which dipped its subscriber base to 7.75 million. Now, we should wait for the monthly data from Trai for November 2020 to see how BSNL performed. Trai says the second-largest wired broadband operator in India is Bharti Airtel and it added 70,000 new users in October taking its overall subscriber base to 2.67 million. ACT Fibernet or Atria Convergence Technologies is third on the list with 1.74 million user base, that’s up from 1.73 million at the end of September. JioFiber continues to add new broadband customers on a decent number. In October, JioFiber grabbed 1.8 lakh new customers which boosted its overall subscriber base to 1.70 million from 1.52 million. JioFiber is aggressively expanding its availability across the country to increase the subscriber base. Fifth on the list is Hathway Cable & Datacom whose subscriber base stood rock solid at 1.05 million. The overall wired subscriber base in India grew to 21.51 million at the end of October from 21.12 million in September, with a growth rate of 1.85%. Unlike the wireless broadband, which grew at a rapid pace since 2016, the wired broadband segment in India is seeing a very slow growth with JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber leading the growth rate. BSNL recently revised its broadband plans to offer faster data speeds and up to ten times more FUP limit. | Reliance Jio In-Flight Connectivity Packs Start at Rs 499 With 1 Day Validity Posted: 23 Dec 2020 05:32 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-inflight-connectivity-plans/319456/, Reliance Jio In-Flight Connectivity Packs Start at Rs 499 With 1 Day Validity
Reliance Jio is the only telecom service provider in India that is currently offering In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) plans. The in-flight packs from Jio are available to both postpaid and prepaid customers of the telco, and they start at Rs 499. With in-flight connectivity plans, customers can enjoy data and outgoing calling benefits even when travelling in Jio’s 22 partner airlines. Airlines like Vistara and Indigo will soon implement in-flight connectivity in India as well as the Union civil aviation ministry lifted restrictions earlier this year. Once the IFC service goes official in India, the Jio IFC packs will also be applicable in local airspace. Right now, Jio has partnered with popular airlines like Aer Lingus, Air Serbia, Cathay Pacific and so on, to allow customers to enjoy data, SMS and outgoing calling services. Jio In-Flight Connectivity Plans: Benefits DetailedReliance Jio has three in-flight connectivity plans priced at Rs 499, Rs 699 and Rs 999. Starting with the Rs 499 plan, it offers a customer 250MB of data, 100 minutes of outgoing voice calls and 100 SMSes for one day. The Rs 699 IFC plan allows the users to consume up to 500MB of data, 100 minutes of outgoing voice calls and 100 SMSes for one day. Lastly, we have the Rs 999 IFC plan that comes with 1GB of data, 100 SMSes and 100 minutes of outgoing voice calls. The telco is not offering incoming voice calling facility which is expected. Customers can make up to 100 minutes of outgoing voice calls while travelling. As for Jio’s partner airlines, the telco currently has 22 onboard. The 22 airlines are Aer Lingus, Air Serbia, Alitalia, Asiana Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Egypt Air, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Euro wings, EVA Air, Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways and Virgin Atlantic. The three services- data, outgoing calling and SMS benefits may not be applicable in some airlines with the plans detailed above. For example, Cathay Pacific enables its passengers just to use the data and SMS services, whereas Emirates offers all three services. Lastly, Jio says the pack benefits will be applicable only on the ‘Partner Airlines.’ Users can review the partner airline details by clicking ‘View Details’ page on the company’s website or MyJio app. Jio confirmed that data and SMS services are available on all the partner airlines, but voice services are available only in select airlines. Incoming calling is not allowed on these packs and incoming SMS is free. And the data speeds may vary from airline to airline.
