| COAI Strongly Condemns Farmers’ Protest of Disrupting Telecom Towers in Punjab Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:52 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/coai-farmers-protest-telecom-towers/321854/, COAI Strongly Condemns Farmers’ Protest of Disrupting Telecom Towers in Punjab
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) expressed its disappointment over farmers cutting power supply to Jio’s towers in Punjab. The farmers are currently protesting against the government three farm laws. According to them, the new farm laws benefit the Mukesh Ambani, who also owns Reliance Jio. Because of this reason, farmers are disturbing the power supply of the telco’s towers. COAI DG SP Kochhar said the firm respects people’s right to protest on any issue, however, sabotaging the telecom network infrastructure is strongly condemned. Reliance Jio officials already met the government executives in Punjab on discussing the matter. The Punjab CM also ordered cops to take action against those destroying the telecom towers. COAI DG Says Disruption of Towers is Causing Immense InconvenienceMany people are currently relying on mobile services to access the internet for attending online classes, attending meetings via zoom, and so on. COAI says telecom services are now considered as ‘essential,’ because of the pandemic. The disruption of telecom towers is causing ‘immense inconvenience’ to the common man for whom the mobile services are essential, said the COAI DG. The COAI represents telecom operators like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea. As India entered into lockdown in March, the ground staff of telecom operators worked hard to provide reliable services. But seeing the services disrupt as part of the protest by farmers is disappointing, Kochhar further said. So far, a total of 1561 mobile towers of Reliance Jio were affected according to the Punjab state government. Earlier reports added that farmers are cutting the power supply to the towers of Reliance Jio alongside physically damaging them. As for the official count, Punjab has a total of 21306 mobile towers across 22 districts, and an ET Telecom report now says 433 towers have been repaired as of Monday. In other news, the Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh ordered cops in the state to take strict action against the ones who are disrupting the telecom towers. The CM issued a ‘stern warning’ against vandalisation of mobile towers and disruption of telecom services in the state and similarly asked the cops to take action against the people who are performing such unlawful activities. Reliance Jio already expressed its disappointment over farmers disturbing the telecom towers and urged the Punjab government to take immediate action. Jio users are also reporting network issues in Punjab due to the disconnected telecom towers. |

Samsung has the habit of reducing prices of its smartphones immediately after the launch and the Galaxy A31 is getting the same treatment. Samsung Galaxy A31: Check New PriceThe Galaxy A31 in India comes in a single variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage priced at Rs 21,999 at the launch. After two price drops, the phone will now be available for purchase at Rs 17,999. The new price is already effective across Flipkart, Amazon India and Samsung’s online store. Since the Galaxy A series is aimed at the offline market, the handset’s price will be reduced across the retail stores. The smartphone comes in three colour options- Crush Black, Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White. As noted, the Galaxy A series is aimed at the offline market so the specifications does not impress many. The handset rocks a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. At the heart of the phone is the MediaTek Helio P65 chipset, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Samsung also allows the users to expand storage using a microSD card for up to 512GB. The Galaxy A31 rocks a 5000mAh battery, but sadly it has 15W fast charging unlike other phones in the price range, delivering up to 65W fast charging support. Thanks to the AMOLED screen, the Galaxy A31 has an in-display fingerprint scanner. As for the cameras, there’s a quad-camera on the back featuring 48MP primary shooter, 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro sensor. The company also added a 20MP snapper on the front for selfies and video calls. | One Broadband Witnesses 32x Customer Growth, Reaches Half-Million Users Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:08 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/one-broadband-witnesses-32x-customer-growth/321806/, One Broadband Witnesses 32x Customer Growth, Reaches Half-Million Users
One Broadband has witnessed a lot of growth over the last four years. The internet service provider (ISP) has managed to get into the top 5 broadband providers of the country, including Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and ACT Fibernet. The growth of the company is not surprising given the affordable broadband plans it offers to the users. During the pandemic, the demand for fiber-based broadband connection grew to an all-time high in the country. The benefits of it have clearly been reaped by One Broadband which has recently reached half-a-million user mark — more details on the story ahead. One Broadband Reaches Half-Million Users MilestoneOne Broadband has just reached half-million users milestone. In a release, the company said that it witnessed 32 times growth in its customer base over the last four years. It is a tremendous number and feat by One Broadband which started operating 4 years back only. The company said that its vision remains the same. It wants to connect Indian homes and offices through its fiber technology. But at the same time, the company doesn't want to forget its core values which are keeping the customers happy, employees first, joyfulness, customer responsiveness, and simplicity. It is worthy to note that One Broadband is in its final stages of launching the smart lighting, smart security, and IoT solutions to enable smart living for Indians through the help of fiber-to-the-home technology (FTTH). Yugal Kishore Sharma, CEO of ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT LTD. (OIL), said that the broadband company has always strived to help the users by offering them a seamless internet experience which is backed by a responsive customer care team over ONE Wire. Sharma further said that reaching half-million users in the last four years means a 32 times growth in the customer base for the company. He said that One Broadband had witnessed a commensurate growth in revenues as well. When the company started providing services 4 years back, it was counted in the list of top 50 broadband service providers in the country. But with time, it has managed to enter the top 5 list as well. Yugal Kishore Sharma also shared that back in 2019, One Broadband partnered with Facebook to provide free Wi-Fi to users in the country. The free Wi-Fi service was named 'ONE Express Wi-Fi by Facebook'. It provided Wi-Fi connectivity to users living in Dharavi, Mumbai, and offered them 2GB free daily data for the first 30 days. |
| Streaming Apps May Have Significant Impact on Cable TV Connections Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:39 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/streaming-apps-have-significant-impact-cable-tv/321795/, Streaming Apps May Have Significant Impact on Cable TV Connections
Entry Level Broadband Plans "Sufficient to Run Smart TV Seamlessly"In its report, ICICI Securities said that entry level broadband plans are now priced at Rs 399 per month as compared to Rs 699 earlier with the plans now offering "unlimited data allowance." The company said that the entry level plans with speed up to 30 Mbps is "sufficient to run smart TV seamlessly." "Further drop in smart TV prices means it has [a] much higher share of total TVs sold in India, which is helping drive penetration," ICICI Securities said in its report. "And innovations such as Amazon Fire stick, and Airtel Xstream box (hybrid boxes) are enabling non-smart TVs to run streaming apps." ICICI Securities said that the streaming apps are in "direct competition to TV viewership" rather than competing with theatres and multiplexes. The company said that the theatres provide an "experience" along with "family outing" that the streaming apps "fail to replicate." Further, the company highlighted that the US and Canada are the "world's biggest cinema market" with the two countries together delivering over US$11 billion in box office collection in 2019. The two countries together in the past five years are said to have delivered box office collections in the range of US$11 billion to US$12 billion. Crucially, ICICI securities highlighted that the box office collection in the "world's biggest cinema market" was recorded despite the increase in the penetration of streaming apps such as Disney+ and Netflix. "Clearly, increasing adoption of streaming apps has not disrupted the theatre market in US/Canada, which are digitally evolved markets," ICICI Securities said in its report. "However, there has been [a] significant impact on cable connections, which have been declining and we may see similar trends in Indian market as well." ICICI Securities Says Streaming ARPU Significantly Lower in IndiaUnlike the US market, ICICI Securities said that the movie production in India is a "fragmented business" with "very few studios" engaged in the streaming services. The company said that the Star Network with its Disney+ Hotstar app along with Sun TV, Zee Studio and Balaji Telefilms "don't contribute materially to net box office collections." Further, ICICI securities also said that the average revenue per user (ARPU) in India is "significantly lower" and that the "monetisation opportunity is limited" with the streaming apps in the country. "Thus, we believe Warner Bros and Disney's US strategy of releasing movies directly on streaming platforms (and gain through valuations) does not apply to India," ICICI Securities said in its report. "In India, the best monetisation of movies will continue to happen through theatrical route." |

| Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi Likely to Launch Identity Verification in Replacement for OTP Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:40 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/jio-airtel-vi-mobile-identity-solution/321756/, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi Likely to Launch Identity Verification in Replacement for OTP
Telecom operators Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are reportedly working on to bring a new mobile identity service that will replace the current OTP verification method. Right now, customers are required to enter an OTP generated by the client on the registered mobile number to avail some services. For example, if a customer is making a bank transaction at an e-commerce website, an OTP verification is required to process the transaction. However, a new ET Telecom report says telcos will soon verify the customers using their mobile numbers using a new technology called ‘Mobile Identity.’ The top three telcos are expecting to roll out this feature by the end of H1 2021. The report also added that the feature is currently being ‘piloted’ by the telcos. Telcos Piloting New Mobile Identity Feature: What You Need to KnowThe ET Telecom report highlights telecom operators will likely team up with companies like Route Mobile that provide these mobile identity services. As per the information available on Route Mobile’s website, ‘Mobile Identity as a Service,’ is a ‘secure universal log-in solution,’ that matches the user to their mobile phone. It allows the users to log into websites and applications quickly without the need to remember passwords and usernames. And Route Mobile also says the service is a safe, secure and no personal information will be shared without permission. Here’s how the service might work: Step 1: Route Mobile will identify the serving operator and requests the end user for authentication. Do make a note that the report did not highlight the technology to be used by telecom operators for rolling out this service. But going by the information available on Route Mobile’s website, the technology mentioned above will likely be used. As noted, the technology will be rolled out to the general public depending on regulatory clearances, and they are expecting a rollout by the end of H1 2021. For the unaware, telecom operators are currently using the OTP verification model for authentication purposes. This procedure, at times, becomes cumbersome as the verification process might be timed out after a certain duration. This procedure is also open to cyberattacks in which the hackers can get hold of the OTP before the users. All these reasons mean telcos are planning to roll out a new mobile identity solution to the users. |
