2020 is now over and we enter 2021 with a lot of hopes. The entire world must be praying for the pandemic to end so that everyday life resumes. 2020 was a great year for the Indian telecom industry as the pandemic helped them increase the Average Revenue per User (ARPU). However, it will go down as one of the bad years where the companies didn’t have much to innovate. For example, Reliance Jio announced many partnerships with major tech companies like Facebook, Google and so on, but there isn’t a single outcome as a result because of the pandemic. Before India entered the lockdown in March 2019, we saw telcos like Airtel and Jio rolling out the VoWi-Fi service. Apart from that, there isn’t any other major rollout from the brands to the general public. As India slowly comes out of lockdown, telecom operators would be hoping to bring innovations to the market. Here are the Telecom Trends to watch out in India this year. Much-Awaited Spectrum AuctionCould you believe that the last spectrum auction happened back in 2016 in India? Well, yes. That’s the reality. Even during the 2016 spectrum auction, the government managed to sell only 40% of the spectrum that was auctioned. Since then, incumbents Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have been pushing the spectrum auction because of the poor financial situation. The Union Cabinet recently approved DoT’s request to hold spectrum auction before March 2021. The government is planning to auction 2,251.25 MHz of spectrum at a reserve price of Rs 3,92,332.70 crore. The frequency bands in the auction will be 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz. Reliance Jio is eagerly waiting for this auction to happen as it is required to renew its spectrum in most circles. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea might take a little part in the auction. Jio 5G Launch in H2 2021At the India Mobile Congress 2020 virtual event, Reliance Jio Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, said the telco would launch 5G services in India in the second half of 2021. He further said the LTE-only operator would pioneer the 5G revolution in India. Reliance Jio also confirmed the development of in-house 5G hardware to reduce the reliability on third-party vendors. We are pretty sure Reliance Jio will be first on the line to launch 5G in India, but if the telco manages to bring it in the second half of 2020 itself, it would be exciting. 3G Network Phase-OutAs we already know, Reliance Jio is an LTE-only operator and Bharti Airtel has shut down its 3G services all across India. Vodafone Idea recently started 3G spectrum refarming and the telco will soon provide only 4G and 2G services going forward similar to Bharti Airtel. Lastly, we have BSNL which is also expected to launch 4G services by phasing out 2G and 3G services by the second half of 2021. If these happen, India will no longer have access to 3G technology. Telcos will likely retain 2G services because of the massive feature phone user base who rely on 2G network for the most part. BSNL 4G LaunchAs far as I know, BSNL 4G launch has been included in almost all of our Indian Telecom Trends articles over the last four years. The craze for BSNL 4G is skyrocketing with every passing day, but the government isn’t allowing the telco to launch 4G services. Yes, the government is to be blamed here. BSNL issued a 4G tender earlier this year in March only to scrap a few months later. The DoT-appointed technology committee suggested the telco to use the locally-made gear for launching 4G services. BSNL replied saying a 4G tender from local vendors is almost 90% pricier than that of global telecom gear vendors. The DoT is now in the process of approaching the Prime Minister Office (PMO) on the BSNL 4G tender matter. Once the PMO replies, we will see DoT drafting a tender for BSNL 4G. So yes, we are expecting BSNL to rollout 4G services at least this year. Public WANI Project RolloutEarlier this month, the Indian government has approved the PM Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) project as part of which the government will allow vendors to set up Wi-Fi hotspots across the country in a massive number. With Project WANI, the government is aiming at providing broadband speeds with public Wi-Fis. In the past, we have seen the public Wi-Fi model failing miserably, but the fact that the government itself is pioneering the service is interesting. A recent report said the government is looking to install at least two million public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2021-end. New Identity Verification Tech by TelcosAs we have reported recently, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are piloting a new mobile number identity verification as a replacement for OTP. The technology which is already available from companies like Route Mobile will remove the hassle for the users to authenticate via OTP. Instead, it will use a secure log-in system that matches the user with their mobile number. The technology is subject to regulatory approvals after which it will be launched to the public. To know more about this upcoming service, head over to this article. |
| Vodafone Idea Takes a Jab at Reliance Jio, Says Voice Calls Never Had an Embargo Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:09 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-jio-voice-calling-embargo/322220/, Vodafone Idea Takes a Jab at Reliance Jio, Says Voice Calls Never Had an Embargo
Earlier today, Reliance Jio made the much-awaited change to its prepaid and postpaid plans. The telco has removed the six paise per minute charges to outgoing calls made by its users to other networks. This means Jio has removed the FUP limit on non-Jio calls on the unlimited combo plans. As everyone might be aware of by now, Reliance Jio is the only telco that charged for non-Jio calls, whereas Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel always offered unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit. Right after Jio’s announcement, Vodafone Idea’ spokesperson said that voice calls have already been free on its network without any embargo and it will continue to provide unlimited calling benefit to the customers. Vodafone Idea Says It Will Continue Offering Unlimited Voice CallsReliance Jio introduced the six paise per minute charges towards IUC in late 2019 after Trai decided to postpone the implementation of Zero IUC regime to January 2021. With the Zero IUC regime set to start on January 1, 2021, Jio fulfilled its promise by removing the FUP limit/charges it collected for non-Jio calls. For every Rs 10 IUC, Reliance Jio offered its users 1GB of data. For example, if you recharge the telco’s Rs 10 IUC pack, you will also get 1GB of free 4G data voucher. While this news will come as a relief for Jio customers, Vodafone Idea took a jab at the country’s leading telecom operator. A Vodafone Idea spokesperson said "Vi customers have always enjoyed truly unlimited services with Vi Unlimited packs. Customers recharging with Vi Unlimited packs can continue to call their friends and family across all networks without any embargo even on calls made to other networks. Vi customers have never had to take any additional IUC pack. Hence, Vi UL packs remain truly unlimited.” The spokesperson reassured that the domestic calls to other networks anywhere in India has always been free and will continue to remain free even in 2021. While introducing the Interconnect Usage Charges of six paise per minute last year, Reliance Jio blamed the incumbents’ Airtel and Vodafone Idea saying they are charging for voice calls, whereas it is ready to welcome the Zero IUC regime. The Trai favoured the incumbents and deferred the Zero IUC regime implementation to January 2021. Since Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel now have a complete VoLTE network across India, they are ready to scrap the Interconnect Usage Charges. |

Oppo Reno 5 4G is the fourth smartphone in the recently unveiled Reno 5 series. Last week, Oppo launched the Reno 5, Reno 5 Pro and the Reno 5 Pro+ in China. The first three phones were 5G compatible and the latest launch- Reno 5 4G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G mid-range chipset. A lot of phones in the past arrived with the Snapdragon 720G SoC and it is a capable mid-range chipset. The Oppo Reno 5 4G has been launched in Vietnam and has many similarities to the Oppo Reno 5 5G. Despite the downgrades, the Reno 5 4G appears to be a decent mid-range smartphone with features like 44MP selfie camera, 4310mAh battery and 55W fast charging. The Reno 5 5G has the Snapdragon 765G chipset underneath. Oppo Reno 5 4G: Specifications and FeaturesThe Reno 5 4G flaunts a 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution 1080×2400 pixels, 90Hz refresh rate and 91.7% screen-to-body ratio. Sun NXT Organic Count Less Than 10%The financial services company said that Sun NXT has less than 10% organic subscriber growth with the operator typically charging Rs 50 per month as subscription charges. "While Rs2bn has been ear-marked towards Sun NXT in FY22, we believe Sun TV will have to significantly improve library content and investment in its OTT platform given gradual migration in viewing patterns from linear TV to digital," Prabhudas Lilladher said in its report. In comparison, Prabhudas Lilladher said that the quarterly operating cost of Zee5, a OTT platform run by Zee Entertainment Enterprises is between Rs 2.5 billion to Rs 2.6 billion. It has to be noted that Sun NXT and Sun Direct, the fourth largest Direct-to-Home (DTH) service operated by Sun TV Network were in focus on the broadcaster's second quarter earnings call in November. SL Narayanan, group CFO of Sun TV Network in the second quarter earnings call said that the company will invest up to Rs 2 billion a year on "content exclusively for Sun NXT." The group CFO of Sun TV Network also highlighted that the company witnesses 40,000 to 50,000 new users "every time some movie premieres on SunNXT." Sun NXT Required to Scale Up Library ContentPrabhudas Lilladher said that the annual operating cost of Zee5 is likely around Rs 10 billion to Rs 11 billion with the Zee5 platform also hosting over 100 original shows. "Currently, no web-series is being aired on Sun NXT (only movies are being shown) while ZEE5 has a library of 100+ original shows & movies," Prabhudas Lilladher said in its report. "We thus believe Sun TV is grossly under-invested in Sun NXT and will have to scale up its library content significantly in the near future." |
| Reliance Jio Reverses Off-Net Domestic Voice Call Charges to Zero Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:50 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-reverses-offnet-domestic-voice-call/322160/, Reliance Jio Reverses Off-Net Domestic Voice Call Charges to Zero
Reliance Jio, the largest wireless operator in India on Thursday said that it will "once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free" from January 1, 2021. The operator in a release said that it is "honouring its commitment" to reverse its off-net domestic voice call charges to zero "as soon as" interconnect usage charges (IUC) are "abolished." Reliance Jio in the release highlighted that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in September 2019, "extended the timeline for implementation of the Bill and Keep regime" beyond January 1, 2020. The operator said that the decision by Trai left it with "no option but to start charging" its users for off-net voice calls. Reliance Jio Set to Offer Domestic Voice Calls for No Additional ChargeThe operator said that it was charging domestic voice calls to non-Jio numbers "at a rate exactly equivalent to the applicable IUC charge." With the Bill and Keep regime set to be implemented from January 1, 2021, Jio said that the domestic calls from Jio numbers to other networks "will be free." "Jio had assured its users that this charge would continue only till the time Trai abolished IUC charges," Reliance Jio said in a release on Thursday. "Today, Jio has delivered on that promise and made off-net voice calls free again." The operator also said that its decision will result in the "majority of smartphone users" across the country "enjoying free voice calls" from January 1, 2021. "Jio is committed to lay the foundation of a digital society – a society where everything, everyone, everywhere is connected with the best quality service, at the lowest price globally, and has access to the most advanced digital platforms," Reliance Jio said in a release on Thursday. Reliance Jio "Committed to Serving" Users Across IndiaIt has to be noted that the operator is currently charging its users six paisa per minute for domestic calls to numbers on rival networks. "Jio stands firm on its commitment to make the common Indian the beneficiary of advanced technologies like VoLTE," Reliance Jio said in a release on Thursday. "Jio is a customer-obsessed organization and cares for every single user. All our users enjoy free voice calls with Jio." |

BSNL SIM Card for No Additional Charge Scheme Extended Till January 31However, the operator on Wednesday said that the SIM card for no additional charge scheme has now been extended till January 31, 2021. Under the scheme, the operator is said to offer SIM card worth Rs 20 to all new users whose First Recharge (FRC) is more than Rs 100. It has to be noted that the operator in the recent months has maintained a consistent user base as compared to its rival operators. While Bharti Airtel is said to have added over 5 million active users since March, 2020, and Vodafone is said to have lost the most users in the same period, BSNL comparatively has a stable user base. In the past three months, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) data highlights that the operator gained 214,912 users in August and 78,454 users in September. However, the operator in October registered a net decline of 10,208 users. BSNL Modifies Multiple Prepaid Vouchers Effective from December 30Meanwhile, BSNL has also said that it will hike the price of its Plan Voucher (PV) 186 to Rs 199 effective from January 1, 2021. The PV 186 offers users 250 daily local and STD minutes to any network across India along with 100 SMS per day and 2GB daily data. The users subscribed to the PV 186 will have the speeds reduced to 80 Kbps upon reaching the daily data limit. While the PV 186 initially carried a 28 day validity, the operator with the price revision has increased the validity of the pack to 30 days. Similarly, the operator has also marginally increased the price of its Special Tariff Voucher (STV) from Rs 199 to Rs 201 effective from December 30, 2020. |

| ACT Fibernet Long-Term Broadband Plans Offer Up to 6 Months of Free Subscription Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:48 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/act-fibernet-long-term-broadband-plans/322109/, ACT Fibernet Long-Term Broadband Plans Offer Up to 6 Months of Free Subscription
A couple of days ago, we reported the introduction of unlimited data benefit by ACT Fibernet in Chennai city. And in this article, we are talking about the ISP’s extra validity offer with long-term broadband plans. ACT Fibernet is offering up to six months of free subscription with long-term broadband plans in Hyderabad. In Chennai, ACT is providing up to four months of extra service with the newly revamped broadband plans which come with unlimited data. ACT Fibernet seems to be finally stepping up the game in the wired broadband segment to counter Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber and BSNL Bharat Fiber. At the end of October 2020, ACT Fibernet had 1.74 million subscribers under its belt and was third on the list with the most number of users. ACT Fibernet Long-Term Broadband Plans Offer Free ServiceStarting with ACT Fibernet’s broadband plans in Hyderabad, there is a total of six of them on offer. The plans in question are A-Max 500, A-Max 700, A-Max 1075, A-Max 1325, ACT Incredible 1999 and ACT Giga plan priced at Rs 5,999 per month. All the six plans are offered in four subscription models- 24 months, 12 months, 6 months and one month. If a customer opts for any of the Rs 500, Rs 700, Rs 1,075, Rs 1,325 and Rs 1,999 broadband plan for 24 months, the company will charge only for 18 months, but it offers a total of 24 months subscription. This means customers will get the additional six months of subscription at no extra cost. In the case of ACT Giga plan of Rs 5,999, the company offers four months of free service, but charges for a full 24 months of amount, i.e., Rs 1,43,976.
In the case of 12 months subscription, all the ACT Fibernet plans in Hyderabad offer two months of free subscription. Sans the ACT Giga plan, customers are required to pay subscription charges for ten months. For example, if a customer is choosing the A-Max 500 plan, then the company will charge Rs 5,000 as the upfront amount for 12 months. In the case of ACT Giga plan for 12 months, the company will charge Rs 71,988 (12 months charges), but it offers the extra two months service, which makes it 14 months. With six months advance rental plans, ACT Fibernet is providing 15 days of free service with the five broadband plans except for the ACT Giga plan. There’s no extra service being offered with monthly plans. Do make a note that the prices mentioned above are exclusive of taxes.
Moving onto Chennai, ACT Fibernet offers up to four months of free service with the advance rental plans of 12 months. Sadly, ACT Fibernet is not providing broadband plans with 24 months subscription in Chennai. But to make up for the lack of 24 months subscription, ACT Fibernet is offering two advance rental options with 12-month and 6-month subscriptions. Consider this example: the ACT Incredible plan in Chennai priced at Rs 1,999, can be availed for 12 months at Rs 23,988. ACT Fibernet provides two options for this subscription- the first one offers three months of free service, free Wi-Fi router and Netflix cashback of Rs 300 per month. The second option allows users to get four months of free service (which makes it a total of 16 months) and Rs 300 Netflix cashback per month. The second option lacks the free Wi-Fi router benefit. The other broadband plans in Chennai also follow a similar route. Unlike Hyderabad, ACT Fibernet is charging the customers full subscription amount and it is giving up to four/three months of extra service, making it 16 or 15 months of overall subscription. |
| Reliance Jio Rs 399 Postpaid Plan: Security Deposit, Data Benefit and Others Detailed Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:38 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/jio-399-postpaid-plan-benefits/322103/, Reliance Jio Rs 399 Postpaid Plan: Security Deposit, Data Benefit and Others Detailed
Reliance Jio introduced the Jio Postpaid Plus plans earlier this year at a starting price of just Rs 399. With the Jio Postpaid Plus plans, the telco introduced a slew of benefits like data rollover facility, unlimited voice calling to any network within India, family add-ons, and started bundling OTT subscriptions. The Rs 399 Jio Postpaid Plus plan is the cheapest of the three, and it does not come with any family add-ons. But this affordable offering from Reliance Jio comes with other benefits like free OTT subscriptions, data rollover facility, more data benefit than postpaid plans from other telcos and unlimited voice calling. As we recently wrote about the telco’s premium Rs 1,499 Jio Postpaid Plus plan, there’s a security deposit on Rs 399 plan as well. Continue reading about the Rs 399 postpaid plan from Reliance Jio in detail. Jio Rs 399 Postpaid Plan: All Benefits DetailedFirst of all, let’s talk about the benefits offered by the Rs 399 postpaid plan from Jio. The Rs 399 Jio postpaid plan offers a user unlimited voice calling without any FUP limit to any network, 75GB of data per month after which the telco will charge Rs 10 for every 1GB of data consumed, 200GB of data rollover facility and 100 SMSes per day. For the unaware, Jio’s basic postpaid plan of Rs 199 offers unlimited Jio to Jio voice calls, whereas the Jio to non-Jio calls will be charged at six paise per minute. As mentioned above, Jio is not offering any family add-on connections with the Rs 399 postpaid plan. However, there’s an added advantage of OTT subscriptions. Users get free access to Netflix Mobile plan, free Amazon Prime subscription for one year and free Disney+ Hotstar VIP membership. On top of the third-party OTT apps, the Rs 399 Jio postpaid plan also offers free access to Jio’s OTT apps like JioTV and JioCinema. For new activations, the telco is charging Rs 500 as refundable security deposit with this plan. Additionally, new users are also required to pay Rs 99 towards JioPrime subscription benefits. Despite the one-time JioPrime subscription and security deposit, the Rs 399 Jio postpaid plan offers excellent value for money, especially when considering the OTT subscriptions. The Netflix Mobile plan alone costs Rs 199 per month and it allows the users to watch a wide range of Netflix content on their smartphones at no extra cost. Amazon Prime membership for one year is available at Rs 999, whereas Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription for one year is priced at Rs 399. The Jio Rs 399 postpaid plan’s data benefit is also on the higher side at 75GB than the Airtel and Vi’s postpaid plan of Rs 399 that offers 40GB of data benefit. |
