The Cabinet has finally approved the WANI project which has been in the trial phase for several years. Recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the WANI project aims at delivering broadband connectivity speeds to every user through the public Wi-Fi hotspots at affordable rates. As part of WANI, any entity (company, proprietorship, societies, non-profits, etc.) should easily be able to set up a paid public Wi-Fi Access Point. This project will pave the way for new categories like Public Data Offices (PDOs), Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs) and application providers. These providers will be able to set up public Wi-Fi hotspots without any license. WANI Project: What Exactly Is It?"The Cabinet has cleared the PM-WANI Public Wi-Fi project that will unleash a broadband revolution in India and empower the lives of ordinary Indians, much like the PCO model of past decades that drove the mass proliferation of basic telephone services," Ravi Shankar Prasad, Telecom Minister said. The project was drafted several years ago. Both Trai and DoT released their recommendations over the years and the regulator even conducted a pilot project for WANI. The mission for WANI pilot project was
“Cabinet today approved the WANI project recommended by Trai. It will create millions of inter-operable Wi-Fi Hotspots in the country and democratise the content distribution and broadband access to millions at affordable rates. This will be the UPI of connectivity services,” said former Trai Chairman RS Sharma on Twitter. That said, the WANI project might face some hurdles in the form of telecom operators. We already know that Indian telcos are against public Wi-Fi model because they say the data rates are already the cheapest, and setting up public Wi-Fi hotspots will not be of any use. | Vodafone Idea Launches Rs 948 Family Entertainment Plus Postpaid Plan With Unlimited Data Posted: 09 Dec 2020 06:03 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vi-rs948-family-entertainment-plus-plan/315840/, Vodafone Idea Launches Rs 948 Family Entertainment Plus Postpaid Plan With Unlimited Data
After launching the REDX Family postpaid plan, Vodafone Idea has now introduced the Entertainment Plus family postpaid plan priced at Rs 948. For the unaware, Vi has an individual Entertainment Plus postpaid plan priced at Rs 699. The new Entertainment Plus Family postpaid plan is also priced at Rs 699, however, the telco is charging additional Rs 249 for a secondary add-on which takes the overall price to Rs 948 (without taxes). Similar to the REDX Family plan that was launched recently, Vi is providing unlimited data with the Rs 948 postpaid plan. Sadly, the plan will be available only in UP East circle. Also, the recent price hike on Vi’s entry-level postpaid plans seems to be applicable only on the postpaid plans available in UP East circle. Vi Entertainment Plus Family Postpaid Plan at Rs 948: Benefits DetailedVi continues the tradition of bundling at least one add-on connection with the newly launched postpaid plan. The Rs 948 postpaid plan comes with two connections- one primary connection and one secondary add-on connection. Vi is offering unlimited data for the primary connection, unlimited voice calling to any network and 100 SMSes for one rental period. Whereas the secondary connection will get only 30GB data per rental, unlimited voice calling and the same 100 SMSes for one month. As noted, the price for primary connection is Rs 699, whereas the secondary connection is being added for Rs 249. That said, Vi will not allow customers to remove the secondary connection, and it comes bundled with the Entertainment Plus Family postpaid plan. Vi allows the users to add up to five connections to the primary connection, and it can be done separately by paying Rs 249 every month. Other benefits of the Rs 948 postpaid plan include free Amazon Prime subscription for one year, ZEE5 Premium for one year and Vi Movies & TV app subscription for one year. The difference between the Rs 948 and Rs 1,348 Family postpaid plans is the lack of Netflix one-year subscription. The new plan launch has been confirmed by Vodafone Idea saying it will be available only in UP East circle for now. On top of that, it seems like the recent price hike on Vi Rs 598 (increased to Rs 649) and Rs 749 (increased to Rs 799) Family postpaid plans is applicable only in UP East circle as the company has listed old postpaid plans as available across ‘all other circles.’ Original article: Vodafone Idea Launches Rs 948 Family Entertainment Plus Postpaid Plan With Unlimited Data ©2020 TelecomTalk. | Cheapest Set-Top Boxes from Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV and D2h Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:30 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/cheapest-set-top-boxes-in-india-today/315823/, Cheapest Set-Top Boxes from Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV and D2h
There are multiple Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators in the Indian market selling their own Set-Top Boxes (STBs) to the users. The leading companies in India in the DTH segment are Tata Sky, Dish TV, D2h, and Airtel Digital TV. All of these companies offer a variety of STBs to the users. Right from standard definition (SD) STBs to 4K and Android STBs, there are a lot of options for the users to choose from. But if you are looking for the cheapest Set-Top Boxes you can find in India, keep reading ahead. Airtel Digital TV – SD Set-Top BoxThe SD Set-Top Box from Airtel Digital TV can be purchased for a mere cost of Rs 1,100. It is arguably one of the cheapest STBs present in the whole market, which allows recording through USB. Since it is an SD Set-Top Box, the satellite content you get won't be of very high quality, but with time you will get used to watching content in such a quality. It is worth mentioning that the HD Set-Top Box isn't too expensive as well. It costs just Rs 200 more (total price Rs 1,300) than the SD STB. Tata Sky – SD and HD Set-Top BoxIn the offerings from Tata Sky, there is not one STB which can be considered the cheapest, but there are two actually. Both SD and HD STBs from Tata Sky are priced Rs 1,499. But in hindsight, it will be the SD one which will prove to be cheaper for the users since HD STB plans are more expensive. The basic difference between the two STBs is the firstly the quality of viewing, and then the quality of sound as well to some extent. Dish TV – DishNXT Set-Top BoxThe DishNXT STB is the cheapest box you can get from Dish TV. It comes for Rs 1,490 and a lifetime warranty with a free one-month subscription. On purchase of this STB from the DTH operator, users also get free coupons worth Rs 2,000 from the Coupon Duniya. D2h – Digital SD Set-Top BoxD2h offers its cheapest STB called 'Digital SD Set-Top Box' for Rs 1,499. For new users, it comes with a free one-month subscription of Gold Combo 60 SD channels. While at the same time, the HD Set-Top Box isn't too expensive as well. It comes for Rs 1,599 only, which is just Rs 100 more than the SD one. So if you are deciding between these, it is clear that Airtel Digital TV offers the cheapest Set-Top Box amongst this lot. While with Tata Sky, Dish TV, and D2h, the price of their cheapest STB is almost the same. It is worth mentioning that with Tata Sky, the cheapest STB can be considered either the HD Set-Top Box or SD Set-Top Box. Even with D2h, there is a price difference of only Rs 100 between the HD and SD Set-Top Box. So if you are only looking for the cheapest Set-Top Box in India and are comfortable with watching SD quality content, the Airtel Digital TV is your best bet. | India’s 5G Share in Worldwide Economy to be $1 Trillion by 2035 Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:20 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/indias-5g-share-in-worldwide-economy/315762/, India's 5G Share in Worldwide Economy to be $1 Trillion by 2035
During the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) event, 2020, Bharat Kumar Jog, an official from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), said that India's share of economic value worldwide when it comes to 5G will be close to $1 trillion by 2035. But for that, he highlighted, the industry must be availed with 5G spectrum or airwaves at an affordable price. He asked the government to act fast and expedite the process of national policy implementation unveiled in 2018. More details on the story ahead. Telcos Must Receive the 5G Spectrum at an Affordable CostThe high price set by the regulator for the 5G spectrum or airwaves has sparked multiple debates and concerns with the early possible rollout of 5G in India. Telcos have also communicated their thoughts on lowering the costs of the 5G spectrum with the government. The same concern was highlighted by the DoT official, Bharat Kumar Jog on the second day of the IMC 2020. He said that new policy initiatives from the government have to be introduced early and the policies must ensure that telcos get the 5G spectrum at an affordable cost. For the unaware, the telecom regulator of the country has set the price of the 5G spectrum in the 3300 – 3600 MHz bands at around Rs 492 crore per unit. Looking at the steep price, Bharti Airtel has already expressed its doubts over participating in the next sale of airwaves by the government. At the same time, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has left the matter of the pricing on the hands of the government. The regulator has backed off saying that it won't reduce the price, but if the government wants to review the pricing, it can. Jog also added that the implementation of the National Digital Communication policy introduced in 2018 needs to be done by the government fast now. He believes that the policy has the ability to empower India digitally and look after the well being of the country. In the end, Jog said that the economic value of 5G worldwide is expected to be $13.2 trillion by 2035, out of which India is expected to contribute up to $1 trillion. | Tariff Hikes Should Come Anytime: ICICI Securities Posted: 09 Dec 2020 12:47 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/tariff-hikes-should-come-anytime-icici-securities/315765/, Tariff Hikes Should Come Anytime: ICICI Securities
Multiple Events Including COVID Delayed Tariff Hikes to 2021ICICI Securities highlighted that the telecom operators unveiled 25% to 40% tariff hikes in the prepaid segment in December, 2019, while further hikes were expected in the current year. However, multiple events including the COVID pandemic along with the "pending clarity on floor prices" is said to have delayed the tariff hikes to the upcoming year. It has to be noted that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in late December, 2019, floated a consultation paper to evaluate the floor prices on the telecom services. ICICI Securities said that the operators in response to Trai have asked for up to nine times increase in the data prices. "Outcome of the consultation is awaited," the firm said in its report. "VIL has said it would be the first to take tariff hikes and is probably waiting for clarity on floor prices. Regardless of floor prices, tariff hikes to come latest by Mar'21 and peers to follow." ICICI Securities said that the upcoming tariff hikes would translate to around 20% increase in Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea's average revenue per user (ARPU) column in the next financial year. ICICI Securities Says 4G Subscriber Addition Should Continue in 2021The firm also highlighted that the 4G subscriber base jumped 7% to 646 million users in the current year. ICICI Securities said that the increase in 4G subscriber base was partly aided by the JioPhone sales that hit the 100 million mark in March, 2020. Crucially, the firm said that the telecom operators in the upcoming year "should see continued growth in 4G" user base with the additions also tipped to "accelerate" on operators subsidising smartphones. "This should help increase ARPU organically from change in subscriber mix," ICICI Securities said in its report. "Unlikely earlier, Bharti has seen strong growth in its 4G subs in CY20 and, considering it has been expanding its 4G network deeper into the market, it should continue to grow fast. VIL's 4G net add has been subdued." Original article: Tariff Hikes Should Come Anytime: ICICI Securities ©2020 TelecomTalk. All Rights Reserved. |

| Xiaomi Cancels MIUI 12 Update for 4 Redmi Smartphones Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:17 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/xiaomi-miui-12-update-cancellation/315719/, Xiaomi Cancels MIUI 12 Update for 4 Redmi Smartphones
Chinese smartphone brand, Xiaomi, officially confirmed the cancellation of MIUI 12 update for a few Redmi smartphones in India. The Redmi smartphones released in 2019 and 2018- Redmi 7, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi Y3 will not receive the much-awaited MIUI 12 update. Earlier in May, Xiaomi said the four phones would receive MIUI 12 Global Stable in the second phase. However, the company took to Telegram saying the phones won’t be updated to MIUI 12 due to compatibility and performance issues. The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A were launched in 2018, whereas the Redmi 7 was launched in mid-2019. MIUI 12 is already being rolled out to several Xiaomi and Redmi phones in India. It is disappointing to see the company removing these phones from the list. MIUI 12 Update Cancelled for Redmi 6, 6A, 7 and Y3 SmartphonesAs noted, Xiaomi announced the cancellation of MIUI 12 update for the four Redmi phones on official Telegram channel. This news is first reported by Fonearena. After that, the company posted the same news on the official MIUI website. "Please note that the following device models originally included in MIUI 12 release schedule won't be updated to MIUI 12 due to compatibility and performance issues. Redmi Y3, Redmi 7, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6." When Xiaomi officially announced the MIUI 12 in May this year, the four phones were part of the list to get MIUI 12 update in the second phase. Xiaomi sells a lot of Redmi A series of phones and the Redmi 6A was the company’s best-selling model in 2018 and 2019. Both the Redmi 6 and 6A are powered by MediaTek chipsets- Helio P22 and Helio A22, respectively. It is already a known fact that consumers complain a lot about MediaTek chipset powered phones when it comes to software updates. Both the Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7 are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC, and it is sad to see Xiaomi blaming ‘performance and compatibility issues’ for the cancellation of MIUI 12 rollout for both the phones. Xiaomi already discontinued all the four phones in India, but the existing owners of the smartphones will be disappointed after hearing this news. All the four devices are currently running on MIUI 11 based on Android 10. Original article: Xiaomi Cancels MIUI 12 Update for 4 Redmi Smartphones ©2020 TelecomTalk. All Rights Reserved. |

Similar to Vi, India’ second-largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel is also providing three prepaid plans under Rs 200, and they are Rs 129, Rs 149 and Rs 199. If we consider the top three private telcos, Airtel is the premium operator and we don’t get to see affordable plans from the telco very often. The Rs 149 prepaid recharge from Airtel was introduced exactly a year ago and it has been the go-to option for several users. Some Airtel users look for even cheaper plans while some of them look for plans with more data benefit under Rs 200. Continue reading to know more about the benefits offered by Airtel with the Rs 129, Rs 149 and Rs 199 prepaid plans. Airtel Rs 129 Prepaid Recharge: Benefits DetailedStarting with the Rs 129 prepaid plan, it offers unlimited voice calling to any network within India, 1GB of data benefit and 300 SMSes for 24 days. Unlike Reliance Jio which is capping the non-Jio voice calls, Airtel is offering truly unlimited voice calls without any daily or weekly FUP limit. On top of these benefits, Airtel users also get Airtel Xstream App subscription that allows them to watch more than 350 Live TV channels for free. Airtel is also providing Wynk Music and free Hellotunes benefits with the Rs 129 plan. Airtel Rs 149 Prepaid Recharge: Benefits DetailedMoving onto the Rs 149 recharge, it is the de-facto option for the customers looking for a plan with 28 days validity. It is a step up from the Rs 129 plan with benefits of 2GB of 4G data, unlimited voice calling and the same 300 SMSes. The validity of the plan is 28 days. Additional benefits with the plan include Airtel Xstream App subscription, free Hellotunes and Wynk Music subscription for free. Airtel Rs 199 Prepaid Recharge: Benefits DetailedThe last plan on the list of Airtel recharges under Rs 200 is priced at Rs 199; It comes with unlimited voice calling, 1GB data per day and 100 SMSes per day for 24 days. Similar to the other prepaid plans, the telco is also offering Airtel Xstream App subscription, free Hellotunes and Wynk Music membership with unlimited music downloads for free. As you can see, Airtel is not offering the Rs 148 prepaid plan like Vodafone Idea. If a customer is looking for a slightly better plan for just above Rs 200, there’s the Rs 219 pack which also offers 1GB data per day for 28 days.
