Vodafone Idea continues to refarm the 3G spectrum to enhance its 4G services. As per the latest development, Vi has successfully refarmed its 3G spectrum to 4G across 11 cities in Gujarat. The telco already refarmed its 3G spectrum to 4G in other circles like Delhi & NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The refarming of 3G spectrum will substantially enhance Vi’s GIGAnet 4G capacity in these cities. Furthermore, Vi also added 5 MHz of 2100 MHz band spectrum deployed to increase the total 4G bandwidth, which results in faster download and upload speeds apart from the better indoor coverage. Having said that, Vi has refarmed the 3G spectrum in only select cities of Gujarat which are listed below.

Vi Refarms 3G Spectrum to 4G for Improved Services in Gujarat

Vodafone Idea has successfully migrated the 3G spectrum to 4G in Ahmedabad, Anand, Bhavnagar, Gandhidham, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and Vapi reinforcing existing 4G capacity. As noted, Vi also deployed additional 5 MHz of 2100 MHz spectrum band in the circle to enhance indoor coverage. The upgradation of 4G infrastructure with the migration of 3G spectrum to 4G, gives Vi GIGAnet 4G the triple advantages of wider coverage, network quality as well as stronger traffic carriage capacity in Gujarat. Vodafone Idea also did the same upgradation in few other cities like Bengaluru, Delhi & NCR and Mumbai.

Recently, Ookla rated Vi as the fastest 4G network in Gujarat. Vi customers can enjoy the fastest 4G experience when they use a 4G SIM in a 4G handset. Vi 3G customers can upgrade to a 4G SIM card at no extra cost. Vodafone Idea confirmed that it would continue to offer 2G services in Gujarat.

The pandemic has brought a lot of changes in consumer behaviours and Vi is trying to meet the growing demands of its users. Slowly, Vodafone Idea will phase out its 3G network and upgrade all the existing users to 4G, by retaining 2G network. For the unaware, Bharti Airtel already phased out its 3G network across India and the telco is now operating on just 2G and 4G networks. Very soon, Vodafone Idea will also join Bharti Airtel. Both the telcos clearly stated that they would continue offering 2G services. While Bharti Airtel has a very good 4G subscriber base, Vodafone Idea still has a lot of 2G subscribers across the country. In fact, Vi’s 2G user base is almost on-par with that of BSNL.

After rolling out the MIUI 12 update to older smartphones like the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Note 5, Xiaomi is now seeding the same update to the Redmi 9 Prime. Launched in August 2020, the Redmi 9 Prime is powered by MediaTek Helio G80 chipset and it ran MIUI 11-based on Android 10 out of the box. Now, Xiaomi is pushing the MIUI 12 update based on Android 10 itself to the smartphone. Several Redmi 9 Prime users on Twitter confirmed the arrival of MIUI 12.0.1.0.QJCINXM update on their smartphone. The update is said to weigh just over 600MB in size, however, the size may vary with every user. The update brings December 2020 security patches to the budget smartphone. Since the Redmi 9 Prime is getting the MIUI 12 update, we can assume the Poco M2 will also pick up the same update very soon.

Redmi 9 Prime MIUI 12 Update: What’s New?

The update for Redmi 9 Prime brings all the new features added by MIUI 12. It adds the new control centre, new notification tray, updated lock screen, brand new system animations and sounds. Xiaomi has confirmed the MIUI 12 rollout to Gadgets 360. It seems like the rollout is a staged one so not every user will get the update today. The update is being rolled out to a section of Redmi 9 Prime users in India and eligible users will get an update notification on their smartphone.

As for the official changelog, Xiaomi says the update carries MIUI 12.0.1.0.QJCINXM build number and the company also added a new feature to the control centre which now closes whenever the users tap on the blank space. Xiaomi has also fixed control centre layout in landscape mode.

The Redmi 9 Prime was the only smartphone under Rs 10,000 to offer a Full HD+ display when it launched last year. Now, we also have the Poco M2 offering exactly similar specs as the Redmi 9 Prime at the same price of Rs 9,999. The only difference between Redmi 9 Prime and Poco M2 is the latter won’t show any ads in the system.

Specifications of the Redmi 9 Prime include 6.53-inch Full HD+ LCD screen, MediaTek Helio G80 octa-core chipset, 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage. Cameras on the Redmi 9 Prime include a 13MP primary shooter coupled with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, 5MP macro sensor and a 2MP portrait sensor. The phone rocks an 8MP selfie camera. It is backed by a 5020mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging, although Xiaomi is bundling only a 10W charger inside the retail box.

5G in India Would Be Only Successful if Street Furniture is Paid Attention on: Trai Chairman

5g-in-india-trai-chairman-infrastructure

The Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), P.D. Vaghela said that telecom operators would face many challenges in deploying 5G infrastructure in India if 'street furniture' is not looked at properly. Even though 5G is still a long way to go in India, the operators and the government have started planning for it to ensure a faster and smoother rollout of the service. Vaghela stressed on the need of street furniture for the rollout of 5G in India — more details on the story ahead.

Street Furniture Important for 5G Infrastructure

According to a report from BusinessToday, Vaghela said that India’s current connectivity infrastructure is not conducive for 5G at all. He said, for 5G, street furniture will play an important role.

Vaghela questioned the existing need for the telecom service providers (TSPs) to physically go to the president of the resident welfare association (RWA) and ask for permission to set up telecom infrastructure. He said that at this age where technology has taken over, this should be done online to save both time and resources of the operators.

He further said that buildings should have codes and suggested that just like there are architects and engineers for the structure of a building, there should be a telecom engineer on active constructions sites to offer advice on putting facilities and ducts. Adding to this, Vaghela said that cities and states need to be ranked in terms of how telecom friendly they are and the issue of street furniture needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.

For the unaware, the term 'street furniture' refers to micro-level telecom infrastructure. More precisely, this includes Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and backhaul, which is used to help the macro-level telecom towers. Through this wireless infrastructure, the range and power of connectivity improve multiple folds by being close to the users.

Vaghela pointed out the problem of misconception people have about 5G on their health. He said that people are just not ready to share their buildings for the use of street infrastructure. Small towers need to be put in every building and along with that also get adequate power supply.

In multiple cases, telecom operators will need to install generators in these buildings, but for that, the state electricity board will have to give its permission first. Thus, according to Vaghela, power is also a big factor in enabling street furniture in India.

bsnl-4g-services-started-chattisgarh

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has started providing 4G network coverage in two cities of Chattisgarh. According to a tweet from BSNL_Chattisgarh's Twitter handle, Bilaspur and Korba, two notable cities of the state have started getting 4G services from BSNL. The tweet mentions that other places will get the 4G network soon as well. This is a good sign for BSNL users living in Bilaspur and Korba cities of Chattisgarh since now they will be able to access faster downloading speeds from the network of the state-run telco — more details on the story ahead.

BSNL 4G to Arrive Soon for Other Cities and States

BSNL is soon going to extend 4G services in other cities of Chattisgarh and other states of India as well. A thing worth noting here is that the state-run telco will be using indigenous equipment and technology to set up and expand its 4G network in India.

As per a Hindu Businessline report, this move is said to help Indian telecom technology and infrastructure companies gain a windfall of about Rs 50,000 crore. Further, it would place India a position to export not only 4G, but also 5G technologies.

Major Indian technology companies such as Tech Mahindra, Tata Telecom Services (TCS), Sterlite Technologies, ITI Ltd, Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd, and Paramount Communications would be able to provide 4G solutions and expand their portfolio of services. These companies will also offer completely indigenous telecom solutions and equipment.

Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA), India’s oldest telecom body, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that BSNL procuring 4G equipment and solutions domestically would lay a foundation for the country to develop homegrown 5G as well.

Ravi Sharma, Chairman of TEMA, said that any further delay of 4G for BSNL would not go down well for the operator. He said that BSNL should be allowed to procure 4G right away and expand as fast as possible.

The start of 4G services in two small cities of the country is a promising move from BSNL. To attract more users and at the same time retain its subscribers, the telco has rolled out a Republic Day offer.

For a limited time until January 31, 2021, the PV 1999 from BSNL which has a validity of 365 days will come with an additional validity of 21 days and offer users 3GB daily data along with 100 SMS/day, unlimited voice calling, and a free subscription of Eros Now.

Bharti Airtel to Spend Rs 9800 Crore in Spectrum Auction: HSBC

airtel-to-spend-rs9800-crore-spectrum-auction
HSBC Global Research in a report on Monday said that it expects Bharti Airtel to invest Rs 9800 crores in the upcoming spectrum auction. The independent research firm with a "strong focus" on the emerging markets said that it doesn't expect the wireless operators to purchase the entire spectrum set for renewal. HSBC also said that Airtel is set to witness an improvement in its average revenue per user (ARPU) in the upcoming years. The firm said that the migration of users from 2G to 4G along with a potential hike in the tariff in the next financial year will contribute to the ARPU increase.

HSBC Says Industry Likely to Skip 700 MHz Spectrum

HSBC estimates Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea to invest Rs 12,500 crores and Rs 3300 crores respectively in the upcoming spectrum auctions scheduled for early March.

"We don't expect operators to purchase the entire spectrum coming up for renewal as operators have enhanced their spectrum holdings over the last few years," HSBC said in its report.

The firm said that Airtel and Reliance Jio could buy "incremental growth spectrum" in the sub-GHz bands along with the 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz bands. HSBC said that the move to buy the "incremental growth spectrum" would "reduce network capex forecasts."

Crucially, HSBC believes the wireless operators are "unlikely" to bid for 700 MHz spectrum as the reserve price is "high" in India.

It has to be noted that Motilal Oswal in December said that Reliance Jio would require capital expenditure of Rs 28,000 crore to renew its expiring spectrum at reserve price. The firm engaged in the financial services also provided higher investment values for Airtel and Vodafone Idea as compared to HSBC. Motilal Oswal said that Airtel would require Rs 13,000 crore while Vodafone Idea would require Rs 8300 crore to renew the expiring spectrum.

HSBC Says Bharti Airtel ARPU to Rise at 14% Over Next Three Years

Meanwhile, HSBC in its report on Monday said that Airtel's ARPU is set to increase at 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next three years. The firm also said that the "acquisition of high value" users will aid the ARPU increase. It was also highlighted that Airtel subscriber addition "remained robust" at 3.7 million in October, 2020.

The second largest wireless operator in India is also said to have added 695,000 postpaid users in the second quarter of the current financial year. Airtel 4G subscriber penetration is said to have improved to 52% in the same period with HSBC expecting the 4G subscriber penetration to hit 80% by the 2023 financial year.

Tata Teleservices Follow Vodafone Idea and Airtel to Court Demanding Recalculation of AGR Dues

tata-teleservices-agr-dues-vodafone-idea-airtel

Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) has approached the Supreme Court of India demanding a recalculation of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. As per the telco, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hasn't calculated the dues correctly. TTSL said that the telecom department made arithmetical errors in the calculation of dues, which resulted in a higher amount than how much it should have been according to the company lawyers. It is worthy to note that the same claims have been made by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) about the AGR dues they have to pay to the government — more details on the story ahead.

Tata Teleservices Say DoT Double-Counted Monthly Interest and Penalties

As per a report from ET Telecom, TTSL has claimed in the Supreme Court that the telecom department has double-counted and added those penalties and monthly interest on the total AGR dues which need to be corrected/adjusted. The telco has paid Rs 4,197 crore out of its total dues of Rs 16,798 crore.

It is worth mentioning that the operator sold its mobile communications business to Bharti Airtel but still has the dues it needs to pay over 10 instalments by 2031 as per a court order issued last year. Both Vi and Airtel have also appealed at the apex court to adjust the incorrect AGR dues that DoT has calculated.

It all started with Airtel moving to the court a few days back and filing a petition claiming that DoT has made several errors in calculating AGR dues. Airtel was followed by Vi, which also claimed the same thing.

Supreme Court of India had earlier said that no further assessment of the dues would be entertained and the telcos will have to accept the telecom department’s calculation. But now, the telcos have asked the court to direct DoT to recalculate the amount on its own with the inputs they have in hand.

As per DoT's calculation, Vi's total dues amount to Rs 58,400 crore, and Airtel's total dues amount to Rs 43,980 crore. Out of their total dues, Vi has already paid Rs 7,854 crore, and Airtel has paid Rs 18,004 crore.

Both Vi and Airtel believe that there have been multiple arithmetical errors committed by DoT in calculating AGR dues, resulting in a higher amount of dues. The court or DoT is yet to issue any comment on the claims made by the telcos.

The operators need as much money as possible in their pocket to be able to purchase spectrum in the upcoming auctions and expand 5G business in the future. Thus this matter can result in yet another legal tussle between the government and the telcos.

WhatsApp Answers Questions Regarding Privacy, Says Private Messages are Protected

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/whatsapp-reply-questions-privacy-policy/324298/, WhatsApp Answers Questions Regarding Privacy, Says Private Messages are Protected

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has finally responded to the backlash it is receiving over the last five days. Ever since WhatsApp started pushing users to accept its new privacy policy, the entire world is criticising the popular instant messaging platform. Replying to the concerns it received, WhatsApp said the private messages are still protected on its platform. WhatsApp also cleared that the policy update does not affect the privacy of user messages with friends or family in any way. Instead, the new privacy is more about the changes related to messaging a business on WhatsApp, which is optional. It also added that the new privacy policy is all about WhatsApp being ‘transparent’ about how the data is collected and used.

WhatsApp Clears User Concerns Regarding New Privacy Policy

In the long FAQ post, WhatsApp reaffirmed that it can’t see the private messages or hear voice calls of the users. “Neither WhatsApp nor Facebook can read your messages or hear your calls with your friends, family, and co-workers on WhatsApp,” said WhatsApp. This is because of the end-to-end encryption that’s been in place for years now. WhatsApp also stated it would never weaken the security and labels each chat to show its commitment towards privacy. Furthermore, WhatsApp will not keep the logs of user chats or voice calls.

The top messaging platform also added that the location shared by users with someone on WhatsApp would not be stored, and yes, the location data is also protected by end-to-end encryption.

One of the major concern for WhatsApp users was contact sharing with Facebook. Replying to this concern, WhatsApp said it would not share contacts with Facebook or any of its platforms. However, WhatsApp will access the phone numbers from the address book to make messaging fast and reliable. Lastly, WhatsApp said that ‘WhatsApp Groups‘ will remain private and the data will not be shared with Facebook for ads purpose. Again, these private chats are end-to-end encrypted so WhatsApp or Facebook can't see the content.

WhatsApp Says the New Privacy Policy Only Affects Business Users

In the same FAQ post, WhatsApp confirmed that Facebook would host its business services going forward. WhatsApp believes that messaging with businesses is different than messaging with the family or friends. As WhatsApp expands its business service, large businesses might require its hosting services to manage communication. This is why the company is giving the option for such businesses to use secure hosting services from Facebook to manage WhatsApp chats with their customers, answer questions, and send helpful information like purchase receipts.

Here comes the major part: WhatsApp says if a user communicates with a business by phone, email or WhatsApp, it can see what a user is saying and may use that information for its own marketing purposes, including advertising on Facebook. To make sure the user is informed, WhatsApp clearly labels conversations with businesses that are choosing to use hosting services from Facebook.

Moving on, WhatsApp talked about new commerce features. With Facebook-brand commerce features like Shops, some businesses will display their goods right within WhatsApp so people can see what’s available to buy. If you choose to interact with Shops, the shopping activity can be used to personalise your Shops experience and the ads you see on Facebook and Instagram. However, WhatsApp confirmed that such features are optional and when a user uses them, it will notify within the app on how the data is being shared with Facebook.
