The hike in prices could be due to the inclusion of 5G support. For the unaware, the Galaxy S20 series did not offer 5G support in India and it was limited to just 4G. This year’s Galaxy S21 devices offer 5G even in India.

While Samsung reduced the prices of Galaxy S21 devices in the United States, the South Korean company has increased the prices in India, and as mentioned, the reason could be the inclusion of 5G.

2021spectrum-auction-details-you-should-know

The next round of spectrum auction is slated to take place from March 1, 2021. Telecom operators have been waiting for the auctions to enhance their spectrum portfolio for better positioning in rolling out 5G services and also to enhance existing capacity. The government will be auctioning airwaves in the 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz – considered as sub 1 GHz bands, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz bands. Today we will be highlighting the quantum of spectrum put to auction and list out the operators who have been using airwaves in a certain band the most.

What Technology Can Operators Use the Auctioned Spectrum For?

The spectrum put into the auction will be 'liberalised' in nature. This means that it can be put to use for any kind of technology the operators wish to use it for with the approval of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the same.

So if the operators want to use the spectrum for 2G, 4G, or 5G, they can do so. Spectrum blocks which are purchased in the auction across bands can be combined if required using the carrier aggregation (CA) technology to provide better speeds and enhance experience. The government hasn't put any restriction on the kind of technology operators will be using given it falls within the scope of the service license and is compatible with the technologies which already exist in the Licensed Service Areas (LSA).

In case the technology is GSM/WCDMA/LTE/CDMA, the successful bidder will have to submit all the details of the technology going to be deployed using the spectrum acquired to provide services within one month of obtaining the license. If the bidder uses new technology, information about the same needs to be submitted at least a year before testing it. The new technology must be approved by ITU/TEC or any other International Standards Organization/body.

Which Operator is Currently Using Which Spectrum Band the Most?

  1. 700MHz Band – 700 MHz band is unutilized so far as operators haven’t showed any interest in the previous auction because of the exorbitant base price of this band and hence none of the operators have participated and won any spectrum in this band. The government is offering the entire spectrum of 30 MHz in the 700 MHz band in the auction.
  2. 800MHz Band – Jio enjoys a majority of the spectrum in 800 MHz band, but most of it is coming up for renewal in 2021; thus, DoT has included it in the auction. Airtel also has a negligible amount of spectrum in the 800 MHz band in just 5 circles.
  3. 900MHz Band – Vodafone Idea followed by Airtel and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)  enjoys most of the spectrum in this band. This band is considered the most valuable for telcos during the times when they offered 2G services for the coverage this band offers. Now telcos started offering 4G services on this band.
  4. 1800MHz band – Vodafone Idea enjoys major share of spectrum in this band followed by Airtel and Jio.This band easily offers coverage and capacity and is the most commonly available band on 4G devices of any price tag.
  5. 2100MHz Band – 2100 MHz band which was earlier used by the operators to provide 3G services is now being refarmed to 4G in most circles. Users have reported better upload speeds and 4G experience overall with a supported device in this spectrum band.
  6. 2300MHz Band – 2300 MHz band is well known as a standard for high-speed wireless broadband access in India among consumers. Reliance Jio holds the majority of this spectrum followed by Airtel which holds just 30 MHz lesser of this band than Jio. Vodafone Idea holds 30 MHz of spectrum (10 MHz in each) in this band in its top circles namely Kerala, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh (MP).
  7. 2500MHz Band – Vodafone Idea is the only private telco in the country which holds spectrum in the 2500 MHz band enabling the telco in providing high bandwidth capacity to the users on a compatible handset.

Quantum of Spectrum Put to Action

2021 spectrum auction Details India

All the in-depth details regarding the spectrum holdings, bands can be found on India Spectrum Holding Timeline page.

Importance of 700MHz Band

700MHz band is considered to be the base band for telcos to offer 5G services because of the coverage this band offers. So, for telcos to provide seamless coverage this band is the supporting band for 5G services. 700MHz along with mid bands and higher bands (mmWaves) will provide a seamless 5G experience to customers.

Important Dates of the Auction

Starting with all the major dates related to the auction, February 5, 2021, is the last date of application for the operators. On February 24, 2021, the final list of bidders will be revealed, and on March 1, 2021, the auctions will start. The license duration or validity period of right to use spectrum in all the bands on auction will be 20 years from the 'effective date'.

Spectrum Block Sizes

DoT will sell the spectrum in different bands in different block sizes. The 700 MHz band will be sold in the block size of 5 MHz (paired), 800 MHz band in the block size of 1.25 MHz (paired), 900 MHz band in the block size of 0.2 MHz (paired), 1,800 MHz band in the block size of 0.2 MHz (paired), 2,100 MHz band in the block size of 5 MHz (paired), 2,300 MHz band in the block size of 10 MHz (unpaired), and 2,500 MHz band in the block of 10 MHz (unpaired).

WhatsApp New Terms Concern Government About User’s Privacy

whatsapp-new-terms-concern-government

The hot debate of WhatsApp's new 'Terms & Conditions' has now the brought Indian government into the play as well. The social media giant recently updated its terms for app usage, which has left users with two choices; either to accept the new changes or bid farewell to the app. WhatsApp has given users time till February 8, 2021, to decide about the same. The Indian government is worried about the privacy of the users. According to a TOI report, the government is "collecting details" about the matter and looking at the changes that Facebook has introduced to the policy of WhatsApp which would share the data of users with the company.

Government Nervous About Lack of Data Protection Law in the Country

The Indian government is a little nervous because there is no regulatory framework backed by a solid data protection law to counter a situation such as this. The government is also working around why the European Union has got a lenient privacy policy from WhatsApp, but India has 'wide-ranging terms' that might harm user privacy.

The Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill of 2019 is in the Parliament but is yet to be passed. It is a policy which looks after the privacy of the Indian users. At the same time, Europe has an active General Data Protective Regulation (GDPR), which puts a stringent law in place to protect users’ privacy and data.

For the unaware, the new terms and conditions rolled out by WhatsApp gives the company a right to share the location data, phone number, usage pattern of the app, and more with Facebook and its suite of apps including Messenger and Instagram. Even the Payments data (precisely of the transaction) will be shared with the company.

The issue is currently being discussed in the IT Ministry, and action from the government body is expected soon. The government might question WhatsApp head-on about why these policies were necessary at this point.

However, it is worth noting that this isn't the first time WhatsApp had a run-in with the Indian government. There is the ongoing matter of Cambridge Analytica data leak and the issue of spreading fake messages on WhatsApp. The company refused to help the government in any way, saying that its users' chat data is end-to-end encrypted, which can't be read or decrypted.

It will be interesting to see how the Indian government responds to this step from Facebook and WhatsApp. Whatever it will be, if you have any fear or issues using WhatsApp, you can either go with Telegram or Signal.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Can Reduce Debt and Save More if AGR Assessment Approved by SC

bharti-airtel-vodafone-idea-agr-self-assessment

Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) stand a chance to reduce their debt significantly and increase annual savings if the Supreme Court (SC) allows the reassessment of AGR dues. The telcos have appealed at SC about the arithmetical errors the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has committed while calculating the dues. As per their assessment, they have to pay much lesser than the amount DoT has come up with. The operators have filed a petition saying that DoT didn't take into account the double-counting of monthly interest and penalties in the total AGR dues amount which needs to be corrected — more details on the story ahead.

Airtel Can Save Rs 4,100 Crore, and Vi Can Save Rs 5,800 Crore Annually if Dues Reassessed

Via a BusinessToday report, Vodafone Idea stands a chance to save up to Rs 5,800 crore, and Bharti Airtel stands to save Rs 4,100 crore annually if the SC allows for the reassessment of the dues calculated by DoT.

Not only this, but the net debt of the telcos is also expected to go down significantly. Airtel could reduce debt by up to 30%, and Vodafone Idea can reduce it by 20% respectively. However, the analysts believe that even after a major respite for Vi, the telco would generate negative Free Cash Flow (FCF).

Last year in September, the Supreme Court had asked the telcos to clear their AGR dues in 10 annual instalments by paying a 10% advance on the total dues left before March 31, 2021. Vodafone Idea has already paid Rs 7,850 crore out of its total dues of Rs 58,254 crore and Airtel has paid Rs 18,000 crore out of its total dues of Rs 43,980 crore.

It is worth noting that the Supreme Court bench led by now-retired judge Arun Mishra said that no further assessment of the dues would be entertained by the apex court and the dues calculated by DoT will be taken into account. Thus it will be interesting to see how the SC reacts to the petition filed by the operators disregarding its direct order about not interfering with the assessment of dues any further.

According to Vodafone Idea's self-assessment, its dues should be Rs 21,500 crore which is 63% lesser than what DoT has calculated while Airtel's self-assessment said that its dues should be just Rs 13,000 crore which is 70% lesser than DoT's assessment.

It is not just Airtel and Vodafone Idea, but also Tata Teleservices (TTSL) which believes that the dues calculated by DoT are not accurate and the telco has also filed a petition for the same at the SC

Add Zero Before Making Outgoing Landline Calls from January 15, 2021

add-0-before-making-outgoing-landline-calls

Users making outgoing calls to mobile numbers via landline connection will soon have to add '0' as a prefix on the number. This is not new information; the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had floated a circular in November last year directing all the telecom operators to implement this rule in their system. As per an ET Telecom report, starting January 15, 2021, this rule will be applicable for all the landline users across the country. It is worthy to note that the suggestion for implementing the rule came from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in May last year — more on the story ahead.

What is the Need for Implementing this Rule?

Yesterday, Bharti Airtel started informing its customers about adding '0' as a prefix before making outgoing calls to mobile numbers. Other telecom operators such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are expected to do the same thing very soon as well.

However, note that adding a '0' before the number is only mandatory while making outgoing calls from landline to mobile numbers. Rules for making calls from mobile to fixed-line connection, mobile to mobile, and fixed-line to fixed-line connection remain the same.

So what is the need for this rule? Why is DoT asking telecom operators to implement this rule and what advantages does it bring to the user?

It doesn't benefit the user directly. The rule has been implemented so that numbering resources can be freed up amid the continuing rise of mobile users and the decline of fixed-line users. With the implementation of this rule, the government expects to generate up to 2,539 million numbering series. So in hindsight, this does benefit the users in the long-run, since, at the end of the day, they are the ones who will utilise these numbering resources.

Trai's recommendation for implementing the rule also came with the intention to free up numbering resources. New numbering resources for mobile services would be a good thing for India since the number of mobile users is all set to grow further at a rapid pace with affordable 4G smartphones making their way into the market.

DoT had also directed all the telecom operators to inform their landline customers about the same back in November. At that point, the rule was assumed to come into effect from January 1, 2021. But now it has been confirmed by the announcement of Airtel to its customers that the rule will be implemented from January 15, 2021.

Reliance Jio Removes Rs 99, Rs 153, Rs 297 and Rs 594 JioPhone Plans

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/jiophone-four-plans-removed-january/325028/, Reliance Jio Removes Rs 99, Rs 153, Rs 297 and Rs 594 JioPhone Plans

Reliance Jio has removed the redundant JioPhone plans. The removal of non-Jio voice calling charges resulted in four JioPhone plans becoming redundant. The four plans in question are Rs 99, Rs 153, Rs 297 and Rs 594. The Rs 153 JioPhone plan overlapped with the Rs 155 plan because it offered better data benefit than the latter. The Rs 99, Rs 297 and Rs 594 JioPhone plans did not offer non-Jio minutes like the JioPhone All-in-One plans, so the telco had to remove them now. The four JioPhone plans available right now are Rs 75, Rs 125, Rs 155 and Rs 185; These four-packs are part of JioPhone All-in-One plans, as we have reported recently. Continue reading to know more about the changes made to JioPhone plans.

JioPhone Tariff Plan Portfolio 2021: What’s New?

As noted, the Mukesh Ambani-led telco has removed four JioPhone plans. The Rs 99, Rs 297 and Rs 594 JioPhone plans offered 0.5GB data per day for 28, 84 and 168 days respectively. All three plans shipped with unlimited Jio to Jio voice calling and no non-Jio calling minutes. So the JioPhone users who recharged with these plans had to recharge FUP plans which used to start at Rs 10. These three plans were listed under ‘Others’ section on Jio’s website and mobile app (MyJio).

Then there’s the Rs 153 JioPhone plan that used to offer 1.5GB data per day, unlimited Jio to Jio voice calling, no non-Jio minutes and 100 SMSes per day for 28 days. The removal of interconnect usage charges means all these plans started to offer unlimited on-net and off-net voice calling benefit.

The JioPhone plans which are on offer right now are Rs 75, Rs 125, Rs 155 and Rs 185. The Rs 75 plan offers 0.1GB of 4G data per day, Rs 125 pack ships with 0.5GB data per day, the Rs 155 plan comes with 1GB data per day, and lastly, the Rs 185 plan offers 2GB data per day. These plans also offer unlimited voice calling to any network without any FUP limit and the validity of the four plans is 28 days.

As you can see, the Rs 155 JioPhone plan available right now is offering 1GB data per day, whereas the Rs 153 plan that was removed used to offer 1.5GB daily data without the non-Jio minutes. So it makes complete sense for Reliance Jio to remove these overlapping plans. The base JioPhone plan now costs Rs 75 per month. A year ago, the JioPhone users had the option of Rs 49, but the base plan’s price has been hiked to Rs 75 in December 2019.

BSNL is now offering two standalone data plans to its postpaid subscribers. Alongside revising the postpaid plans last month, BSNL also introduced a couple of data plans which start at Rs 150. The telco currently has just two data plans for the postpaid users priced at Rs 150 and Rs 250, and they offer up to 70GB of data benefit. In contrast, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are also providing similar data plans to postpaid customers, but they are offering up to just 50GB of data benefit. The Rs 250 postpaid mobile phone data plan from BSNL comes with 70GB of data on top of existing postpaid plan’s data benefit. These postpaid data plans come in handy for the users who actively consume data on their mobile phone connection.
