5G launch in India is still far away, but smartphone brands started launching mid-range 5G-enabled smartphones. The first mid-range 5G phone launched in India was the Moto G 5G with Snapdragon 750G, and it was soon followed by Xiaomi Mi 10i with the same chipset. And very soon, we will see the MediaTek Dimensity chipset powered 5G phones launching in the country. Telecom operators in several countries have already launched 5G services, but at this point, there’s no path to 5G in India. The country’s leading operator Reliance Jio promised 5G network launch in the second half of 2021, but again, it could be pushed to early 2022. The real question in front of us right now is: will you purchase a mid-range 5G smartphone?

5G Mid-Range Smartphones in India are Becoming a Reality

Even at the beginning of H2 2020, 5G an affair to flagship devices or the devices above Rs 40,000. That has changed with the OnePlus Nord as the phone priced at Rs 24,999 offered Snapdragon 765G SoC with 5G support. Later on, we saw the arrival of Vivo V20 Pro 5G at Rs 29,999. Last month, Motorola launched the cheapest 5G phone in India aka the Moto G 5G with Snapdragon 750G chipset at Rs 20,999, and it was soon followed by Mi 10i. During the upcoming Republic Day sale, the Moto G 5G will be available at an effective price of Rs 17,999, making it the cheapest 5G phone ever to be sold in India.

As long as brands keeping the prices of the 5G smartphones affordable in India, we can continue purchasing them. For example, the Mi 10i is one of the best smartphones in this segment and the same goes with OnePlus Nord.

Thanks to the inclusion of 5G on Samsung Galaxy S21 series, the devices’ prices are increased compared to their predecessors. So far, that is not the case with mid-range 5G phones in India as OnePlus, Motorola and Xiaomi launched them competitively. Will you purchase a mid-range 5G smartphone in India right now? Let’s talk.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to start providing 4G services throughout the country. The telco is looking for a company that can carry its tender and deploy all the necessary equipment that it can leverage to offer a seamless 4G experience to its customers. Certainly, the government does not want multinational or foreign companies to be taking part in this tender since it would betray its vision of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'. As per an ET Telecom report, three companies have claimed that their 4G core technology is completely indigenous — more details on the story ahead.

Mavenir Claims its 4G Core is Indigenous

One of the most interesting developments in the recently held BSNL meeting for its 4G core was the claim made by Mavenir. For the unaware, Mavenir is a Texas-based OpenRAN major company which said its 4G core is completely indigenous. The meeting was attended by all the home-bred companies and foreign companies interested in being part of the 4G journey of BSNL.

Mavenir Systems Private Limited is a registered subsidiary in India, and it is claiming that its 4G core offering is indigenous. But another interesting thing is that the company did not provide any further details about it. It said that it would prove that its equipment and technology are indigenous when the right time comes.

However, one of the executives sitting at the meeting said that if the government accepts the offering of Mavenir, it would mean not siding with the vision of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'. The executive further said that the 4G core tender should go to an Indian company only.

A Mavenir spokesperson, on the other hand, said that the company is looking to contribute to the Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission of India. But the spokesperson didn't say anything about how the company's equipment is indigenous.

PertSol, a telecommunications-company and government's C-DOT (The Centre for Development of Telematics) were also part of the meeting. They also claimed that they could provide indigenous 4G core to BSNL's network.

PertSol claimed that it has 100% in-house developed core for 4G LTE services to provide to BSNL. The company has also said that it can offer IMS (VoLTE) services and complete packet core stack including remote connections, lawful interceptions solutions, and location-based services.

Many companies are running to acquire the 4G tender of BSNL. Thus, it will be interesting to see which company can finally bag the tender from the government.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has started providing users with over-the-top (OTT) benefits on purchase of broadband plans. The telco has been offering broadband services for many years now. But since the time Airtel and Jio have come in with their fiber broadband offerings at an affordable cost, BSNL's internet business has gone down. To counter this dip in demand of broadband services, BSNL later came with its fiber offerings as well. But the only thing that was missing from BSNL's fiber offerings was OTT benefits. But not anymore, BSNL is allowing users to buy an affordable add-on pack with their broadband plans through which they can get access to multiple OTT platforms — more details on the story ahead.

BSNL OTT Add-On Packs Details

BSNL is offering one OTT add-on pack at two different rates. Users purchasing the pack for the first three months will get it for Rs 129 per month. After the first three months are gone, the plan’s rate will increase to Rs 199 per month. As per a KerelaTelecom report, the add-on pack will bring users subscription of Voot Select, SonyLIV Special, ZEE5 Premium, YuppTV Live (all NCF channels), YuppTV FDFS (first-day first show), YuppTV Movies, Support, and Marketing content as well. Duly note that the above-mentioned charges don't include the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

BSNL will be offering this broadband OTT add-on pack in every circle it operates. The add-on pack will come in to effect from January 18, 2021. Both BSNL's Bharat Fiber customers and normal broadband customers can purchase this OTT add-on pack from January 18. It is worth noting that every subscription offered to the users will allow them to access content from the premium library of these platforms.

While the monthly cost may look small when users see the kind of OTT bundle they are getting, one should not forget that other internet service providers (ISPs) offer OTT benefits for free with their broadband plans. Airtel and Jio both offer a ton of OTT benefits to users with their broadband plans for no additional cost, and their fiber plans come for almost the same rate as of BSNL's.

While BSNL has stepped up its broadband game, it will be interesting to see how consumers look and react to this OTT add-on pack. For the unaware, BSNL also offers a free subscription of Disney+ Hotstar Premium with its select fiber broadband plans namely 'Superstar 300GB/month' (Rs 779/month), 'Superstar 500GB/month' (Rs 949/month), 'Fibre Premium' (Rs 999/month), and 'Fibre Ultra' (Rs 1,499/month).

WhatsApp officially announced that it is delaying the implementation of the new privacy policy by at least three months. In a new blog post, the Facebook-owned company said it would allow the users to review the new policy at their own pace before the new business options come into effect on May 15. WhatsApp earlier mentioned that users will have to accept the privacy policy by February 8 to continue using the instant messaging platform. The decision from WhatsApp comes after the massive backlash it received from the users and media alike. WhatsApp detailed the privacy policy a couple of days ago through FAQs, but we believe the damage has already been done.

Here’s Why WhatsApp Delayed its New Privacy Policy Implementation

Going by the detailed blog post, it is clear that the new privacy policy will not come into effect at least before May 15. WhatsApp says ‘there’s been a lot of misinformation’ regarding its new update and the company is aiming to help everyone understand its principles and the facts.

WhatsApp has always been transparent on one aspect- what you share with our friends/family stays between you. WhatsApp’s chats are end-to-end encrypted, and the company says the new policy update will not make any changes to the encryption. In the blog post, the company reiterated that neither WhatsApp nor Facebook could see private messages.

The new policy is not making any changes to private messaging on WhatsApp. Instead, the update includes new options people will have to message a business on WhatsApp, and provides further transparency about how it collects and uses the data. That said, WhatsApp says not everyone shops with a business today, however, it believes more people will choose to do so in the future. It further said users should know about these services. Lastly, WhatsApp said the update does not expand the ability to share data with Facebook.

As noted, WhatsApp is now moving back the date on which people will be asked to review and accept the terms. It also confirmed that no user would have their account suspended or deleted on February 8.

WhatsApp says it will also do a lot of things to clear up the misinformation around how privacy and security work on the platform. The new business options will be available on May 15. WhatsApp did not mention anything about the users who already accepted the new privacy policy.
