| Tata Sky Market Share Increased to 32.58%, Dish TV Further Dips to 27% Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:56 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/tatasky-dth-dishtv-market-share/327339/, Tata Sky Market Share Increased to 32.58%, Dish TV Further Dips to 27%
Tata Sky has extended its lead at the top with a market share of 32.58%. Tata Sky ended the Q1 FY21 with 32.09% share, and it has been increased to 32.58% at the end of September 2020. The second-largest DTH operator continues to be Dish TV. However, unlike Tata Sky, Dish TV lost its market share. The remaining two service providers- Airtel Digital TV and Sun Direct also increased their market share marginally. The total active Pay DTH subscriber base has increased from 70.58 million in June 2020 to 70.70 million in September 2020. A year ago (September 30, 2019), the total active Pay DTH subscriber base used to be 69.30 million, which saw a slight increase to 70.70 million. Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV and Sun Direct Register Growth in Q2 FY21The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today released 'The Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators' report for the quarter that ended on September 30, 2020. During the quarter, Tata Sky managed to increase its market share to 32.58%. On the other hand, Dish TV lost market share and settled down with a 27% share at the end of Q2 FY21. Airtel Digital TV and Sun Direct are third and fourth on the list with 24.59% and 15.83% share.
It is a worrying factor for Dish TV as the DTH operator lost market share for two quarters straight. The other DTH operators are increasing their market share marginally, but that’s not the case with Dish TV though. Once the top DTH operator in India, Dish TV is constantly losing the share to Tata Sky and Airtel Digital TV. The reason for Dish TV’s market share dip is not-so-competitive offerings. For example, Tata Sky is providing its Binge+ Android TV Set-Top Box with six months of free Tata Sky Binge subscription at just Rs 2,999, even for new customers. That’s not the case with Dish TV as the DishSMRT Hub Android TV-based hybrid Set-Top Box is available at Rs 3,999 for new users and at Rs 2,499 for existing customers who are upgrading from HD or SD Set-Top Box. The reason behind Tata Sky gaining subscriber base is Tata Sky Binge that combines a lot of premium OTT subscriptions into a single package at just Rs 299 per month. |

However, the report confirmed the wireless subscriptions declined on YoY basis at the rate of 2.14% during the year. Out of the 776.45 million internet subscribers, the number of wired internet subscribers are 24.36 million and the number of wireless internet subscribers are 752.09 million, Trai said. Prepaid and Postpaid ARPU Increased in QE September 20Furthermore, the Monthly Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for wireless service increased by 7.49% from Rs 90.12 to Rs 96.87. If we compare the data on a YoY basis, the monthly ARPU for wireless service increased by 30.24% in this quarter. As for the prepaid ARPU, it saw an increase of Rs 6 from Rs 84 to Rs 90 in the Quarter Ended September 30, 2020. The postpaid ARPU also increased from Rs 224 to Rs 234 during the same period. The increase in ARPU comes as a relief for the industry. After several quarters of struggle, telecom operators are finally showing some positive growth financially. If we compared the ARPU individually, Bharti Airtel tops the chart followed by Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea. |

| Telecom Operators Want Lesser Taxes and Exemptions from Government Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:00 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/telecom-operators-lesser-taxes-exemptions-government/327194/, Telecom Operators Want Lesser Taxes and Exemptions from Government
India’s telecom industry wants to pay lesser taxes and need exemption on paying custom duties to the government. The license fee which telcos in India have to pay is way too high than what operators in other parts of the world need to. That is why, the industry has sought for a reduction in spectrum usage charges (SUC), spectrum acquisition charges, licence fee, removal of GST (goods and services tax) from certain areas, and exemption on paying custom duty from the government in the upcoming budget — more details on the story ahead. Government Needs to Acknowledge the Upcoming ExpensesThe Indian government earns a hefty sum of revenue from the telecom industry. In figures, the amount that the government gets from the industry is Rs 58,000 crore annually. It is worth noting that the sector has already invested up to Rs 11.24 lakh crore until now to provide telecom services. As per an ET Telecom report, according to the director-general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), SP Kochhar, the government needs to acknowledge the kind of expenses that the industry is going to face in the coming time. With the need to expand 4G across the country, operators are also looking to introduce 5G for which a dire need of fiberisation would need to fulfilled. All this would involve a mountain of costs, and if the telcos are not offered relief in some way, the industry might crumble. Kocchar further said that the license fee should be brought down from 3% to 1% as early as possible for DoT/government to cover admin costs. COAI has asked the government to abolish the Universal Service Obligation Fund. The telcos have to pay 8% of their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) to the government out of which 5% of the money goes to this fund. Along with this, the telecom body has asked the government to reduce the spectrum usage charges by 3% for the three telcos (Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea). Then there is the 4G spectrum auction in March. The telcos are not expected to bid aggressively given the debt they are already in. The association has further suggested removing GST from various areas for the telecom operators saying that it is how the international bodies also work. "The industry recommends suitable amendments in the GST law may be made to allow a refund of unutilised ITC. Alternatively, an unutilised amount may be applied to other government liabilities of operators," said Kochhar. |
| Netflix COO Says Lot of Interest Amongst Indian Users to Try Netflix Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:31 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/netflix-lot-of-interest-indians-to-try/327188/, Netflix COO Says Lot of Interest Amongst Indian Users to Try Netflix
Netflix Now Analyzing StreamFest ExerciseWhile the StreamFest was initially set to be a two-day exercise, the company in December extended the promotional period beyond its 48-hour window. "So StreamFest in India, I mean the primary learning, which is very evident, is that there’s a lot of interest amongst consumers in India to try Netflix," Peters said in the earnings call on Tuesday. "We had millions of people that had access for a 48- hour period to the service. And now we go through the more difficult part of actually analyzing how that interest through the specific tactic translates into sustained incremental growth." Peters said that the company is still "working through the details" of the StreamFest exercise and that it will "inform" users and shareholders on whether StreamFest will be expanded to other regions. "And obviously, based on what we see there, we’ll inform how we think about how we leverage that tactic again or how do we improve on it, what are places we think it might be leverageable," Peters said in the earnings call on Tuesday. Netflix "Shuffle Play" to Expand to Other RegionsThe Netflix COO also said that the "Shuffle Play" feature that enabled users to "skip browsing" and "instantly play" a random title would be expanded to other regions across the world. It is reported that the Shuffle Play feature has been in testing phase since July, 2020. "But I think an even better example of that is a new feature that we’ve been testing and we’re going to now roll out globally because it’s really working for us, where our members can basically indicate to us that they just want to skip browsing entirely, click one button and we’ll pick a title for them just to instantly play," Peters said in the earnings call on Tuesday. "And that’s a great mechanism that’s worked quite well for our members in that situation." In a letter to the shareholders, the company highlighted that it added 8.5 million paid users in its fourth quarter with the full year paid membership additions hitting 37 million. The company also said that it "achieved" US$25 billion in annual revenue, translating to a 24% year-over-year growth while its operating profit increased 76% to US$4.6 billion. The Netflix COO also said that the company is "improving the ability" for its members to select the languages while browsing content. "We’re improving the ability for our members to tell us what languages they want in terms of the content when they’re browsing," Peters said in the earnings call on Tuesday. "And there are sort of these different scenarios. There’s a scenario maybe when you’re by yourself and if you’re multilingual, that can result in sort of different choices. If you’re in a multigenerational household, then all of a sudden, that might shift how you think about like what titles you want to present and what language it is." Further, Peters said that the company is looking to expand the payment options along with the partnerships to make the platform "more accessible." "The methods of payments that we know we need to expand, and we’re constantly working to add more of those and make those more effective, the partnerships we have that make the service more accessible and more immediate, easier for members to find out and sign up," Peters said in the earnings call on Tuesday. "So there’s tons of things that we’re looking at." |

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is offering lifetime validity to select kind of prepaid users if they follow certain terms and conditions. First of all, the offer is only applicable for C-Top Up prepaid connection users. For the unaware, C-Top Up prepaid connections are special mobile connections which BSNL offers to its retailers and Direct Selling Agents (DSA). This group of users recharge for and collect bills from regular subscribers of BSNL services. However, as mentioned above, there are some rules that these C-Top Up prepaid connection holders need to follow, keep reading ahead to find out what they are. BSNL C-Top Up Prepaid Users To Get Lifetime Validity on Plans if They Follow ThisThere is just one string attached to the offer. For any C-Top Up prepaid user to get the benefit of lifetime validity on his/her mobile connection, he/she must make at least one transaction in a period of 90 days. If there are no transactions in a 90 day period, BSNL will deactivate or delete all the inactive accounts/connections. The offer will come into effect from January 18, 2021, in all the telecom circles. As per a report from KeralaTelecom, C-Top Up connections which are deactivated and are in the Grace Period-II (GP-II) can be reactivated by recharging with an STV or PV in the same manner as for regular subscribers of the telco. Likewise, normal top-up won't activate the connection for C-Top Up users if their number is listed on the GP-II category. This could prove to be a great strategy for BSNL. The telco is finally coming around and catching up with the marketing and selling strategies of other operators. With this offer, C-Top Up users of BSNL will be motivated to make more transactions throughout a year. This would, in turn, benefit the telco in the long-run. The telco recently introduced long-term (annual) validity options for multiple Bharat Fiber plans. This is something a lot of users wanted because long-term plans with BSNL mean getting a few months of service for free. Along with this, the telco also introduced the over-the-top (OTT) add-on pack for broadband users. So those users who want OTT subscriptions with their broadband plans can purchase these add-on packs. The OTT add-on pack from BSNL costs Rs 129 per month for the first three months and then it becomes Rs 199 per month for however long the user wishes to subscribe to the pack for. |

| OnePlus 7 & 7T Devices Receive OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 Based on Android 11 Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/oneplus-7-oxygenos11-open-beta-released/327147/, OnePlus 7 & 7T Devices Receive OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 Based on Android 11
OnePlus has released the first OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 update to the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and the 7T Pro smartphones. The Android 11 update for OnePlus 7 & 7T series was planned for December 2020, however, due to a major data decryption bug, the Chinese company had to work closely with Qualcomm in resolving the issue before releasing the first Open Beta build. It is a piece of good news for all the OnePlus 7 & 7T smartphone users, but again, it is an Open Beta build, so there might be some bugs to start with. OnePlus says it will take user feedback before releasing the stable update for the four smartphones. As for the features, the official Open Beta 1 changelog confirms the addition of new user interface, Android 11 features, ambient display and added a shortcut for enabling dark mode. OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 for OnePlus 7 & 7T Series: What’s New?OnePlus has added all the OxygenOS 11 features to the four smartphones with Open Beta 1 update. Firstly, the company has added fresh new UI that received a lot of criticism for being similar to Samsung’s OneUI. All the OnePlus stock apps like Phone, Messaging, Settings and Clock received a major facelift. OnePlus also updated the stock Camera app continuing its tradition of revamping camera application with every major update. The four phones will get the HEVC codec support that reduces video storage size without compromising on quality. The Open Beta 1 also added access to a third-party app to share pictures by pressing and holding it in preview. And yes, the much-awaited Ambient Display feature is also being rolled out to the OnePlus 7 and 7T devices with this update. The ambient display can be enabled in the display section inside the Settings app. OnePlus says the Always-On Display feature is still under internal testing for the four phones and it will be released in subsequent versions. In Open Beta 1, users can use the ‘Ambient Display’ by picking up the phone or tapping the screen. These settings can be tweaked. OnePlus is also adding a shortcut key for Dark Mode in the quick settings panel. Lastly, the OnePlus Shelf also receives a redesign, and there’s a new Weather widget. OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 for OnePlus 7 & 7T Series: Known IssuesAlongside revealing the new features, OnePlus also listed out some known issues present on the Open Beta 1. Since it is a beta release, there are potential risks of increased power consumption and instability. The OnePlus Gallery app might be slower to load and OnePlus also says some pictures may not be displayed in the app. Bluetooth devices like earphones and speakers may not be able to play sound at times. The build also has some issues related to brightness which may lag in some conditions. OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 for OnePlus 7 & 7T Series: How to Install?OnePlus says the build is only for OnePlus 7/7 Pro & 7T/7T Pro unlocked non-carrier variants. Users should make sure their device has at least 30% of battery and a minimum of 3GB storage space. Another thing worth noting is the Open Beta 1 can be installed on top of the current stable build, however, you can not roll back the build to OxygenOS 10 without data wipe. To begin with, head over to the OnePlus Forums’ post to download the OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 1 build for your smartphone. Download the required ROM upgrade package from the specified download link. After downloading, open File Manager application and remove the .tar file extension. If you are downloading on a PC or laptop, the file extension will automatically be .zip. After renaming/downloading on your PC, copy the ROM upgrade package to the phone storage. Now, head over to Settings>System>System Updates>Click top-right icon>Local Upgrade. The copied ROM upgrade file will be displayed, click on it and wait for the installation procedure to begin. After the upgrade is complete, click Restart.
