OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei Has Been Working On ‘Nothing:’ Here’s What We Know About It

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/carl-pei-nothing-company-launch/330440/, OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei Has Been Working On ‘Nothing:’ Here’s What We Know About It

Carl Pei, OnePlus' co-founder, who parted ways with the company at the end of 2020 had said he would announce the name of his new company on January 27. The Swedish entrepreneur also created hype for the upcoming company by giving away a few Apple MacBook Air laptops Well, today that day finally arrived and the general tech community was buzzing with excitement in regards to this venture. When the time came, we saw a tweet by Carl stating that he might announce nothing. Lo and behold, he actually did Nothing all this time. Confused? So were we. In reality, the company that the ex-OnePlus co-founder has formed has been dubbed Nothing. Weird? Yes. Unique? Even more.

"Nothing's mission is to remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future," says Pei, Nothing's founder and CEO, in a press release. "We believe that the best technology is beautiful, yet natural and intuitive to use. When sufficiently advanced, it should fade into the background and feel like nothing," he further added.

When is the First Product Launching?

In the same release, we saw the company stating the first tech products from them would launch later in 2021. That is all available, we're afraid, it seems Carl liked the OnePlus Nord hype train and thought of doing something similar, adding to the suspense and keeping the tech fraternity chattering about Nothing.

If you, like us are wondering about the company’s identity, it describes itself as a "London based consumer technology company" with some notable investors, including iPod inventor Tony Fadell, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, and YouTuber Casey Neistat. Cred founder Kunal Shah also invested in this venture, he announced a few days ago.

"Right now… the team is being built, so we want to focus on simpler categories," Pei says, "but as our team gains capabilities and skills we want to start moving up. The ultimate vision of having everything connected in a seamless way, that can only happen when you have multiple categories of products that are connected."

What Is It About?

Well, the company is not announcing what it is all about. If you remember, last year, Wired had reported that the new company could focus on music and might even make its own headphones.

When asked, Pei declined to confirm whether headphones would be among Nothing's early products. When asked by Wired, he said the company's plans were "so much more than that."

While there's been speculation that Nothing might be in the process of developing an accompanying music service, Pei told The Verge in an interview that Nothing plans to make most of its money by selling hardware rather than software subscriptions, at least initially.

"We haven't spent too much time thinking about the software portion of it," Pei says. "It definitely needs to be a good user experience if you are to generate revenue from software."

In the long term, however, he admits that a "healthy business" requires both good hardware and good software.

Should OnePlus Be Worried?

No, at least not as of now. OnePlus does have a portfolio consisting of audio products, but they are limited to earphones and neckbands. Nothing might enter the audio market in any manner possible, be it with audiophile headphones or even speakers, but, for now, we can only say time will tell.

The backing of Carl is definitely a plus for this company, but there is much more to success than a pretty name and a famous founder. The products on offer have to be good and competitive and, not have issues that are usually present on inexperienced brands' products, such as quality issues or a lack of, for lack of a better word, Panache.

We do hope that Carl succeeds and the Nothing company achieves success. As for its products, we are on the lookout for what the company might offer and if we get to know about anything that surfaces, be sure that we will be ready to share that with you.

We share the same excitement as the general public when it comes to a new company, especially when it comes from a company that has a lot of creative individuals having their hands deep in the mix.

Counterpoint today released the final report highlighting the Indian smartphone market trends for the year 2020 and Q4 2020. In the report, Counterpoint highlighted that the pandemic did not hurt the smartphone markets as the overall shipments declined by a modest 4% YoY to reach over 150 million units in 2020. The first half of 2020 is all about the COVID-19 and the lockdown, which is the reason why smartphone shipments crossed 100 million units in the second half of 2020 for the first time ever. Chinese brand Xiaomi led the market with a 26% share in 2020, followed by Samsung at 21%. Vivo, Realme and Oppo complete the top five chart with 16%, 13% and 10% share, respectively. In Q4 2020, Apple shipped a decent 1.5 million units thanks to the festive sales and affordable prices on iPhone SE 2020, iPhone XR and the iPhone 11.

Indian Smartphone Market Grew 19% YoY in Q4 2020

The report further highlighted that the Indian smartphone market grew 19% YoY in Q4 2020 due to the Diwali falling on November 14. Xiaomi lost its top spot to Samsung in Q3 2020, however, the company reclaimed the top spot in Q4 2020 with 13% YoY growth. During the last quarter of 2020, Xiaomi launched multiple phones under the Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9 series which helped the brand recapture the top spot. Counterpoint expects that Xiaomi will continue to focus on the mid as well as premium segments in 2021. Xiaomi spin-off Poco shipped five million units in Q4 2020 driven by the aggressively priced Poco M2, M2 Pro and Poco C3 smartphones.

Samsung reached the top spot of the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2020, however, it wasn’t able to keep up the position for long. The South Korean smartphone company slipped to the second position in Q4 2020, despite exhibiting 30% YoY growth. Samsung went aggressive on online channels in 2020 with multiple launches under the Galaxy M, Galaxy A and the brand new Galaxy F series. The brand grew 1.5x YoY in CY 2020 on online channel shipments, said Counterpoint.

Vivo remained the top offline player in 2020 with 13% YoY shipments decline because of the pandemic. Among the top five brands, Realme grew the highest at 22% YoY in 2020. It crossed the 20 million units mark for the first time, thanks to the demand on online channels and some impressive smartphone launches from the brand. Oppo shipments in India grew 11% YoY in 2020 while remaining flat in Q4 2020. Oppo launched the Oppo A12 and Oppo A53 smartphones in Q4 2020 which saw decent demand.

Transsion Group brands- itel Mobiles, Infinix Mobiles and Tecno Mobiles registered the highest-ever shipments in a single quarter at over nine million units. The three brands remained strong in Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities and rural India. Some of the best-selling models from the brands include Tecno Spark 6 Air, itel Vision 1 and Infinix Smart 4 Plus. itel remained the top feature phone brand in the quarter and became the top feature phone brand in 2020 for the first time.

Lastly, we have Apple which captured the sixth spot in the Indian smartphone market in Q4 2020 with 171% YoY growth in the quarter and 93% YoY growth in 2020. The launch of the iPhone 12, aggressive offers on the iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 11, and online expansion helped Apple gain market share. For the first time, the brand crossed 1.5 million shipments in a single quarter in Q4 2020. Premium smartphone brand OnePlus experienced 200% YoY growth in Q4 2020 largely driven by the mid-range Nord smartphone and the newly launched OnePlus 8T series. It re-entered the mid-range segment with the OnePlus Nord priced at Rs 24,999, making it possible to cross 3 million shipments in a year for the first time.

5G smartphone shipments in India crossed four million in the whole of 2020.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: Not the PUBG Mobile Alternative Many Were Expecting

fau-g-gameplay-review-not-the-pubg-mobile-alternative

FAU-G, which was announced last September, was released yesterday on the Google Play Store. We installed the game and played it a little to get the overall gist of it and check on the graphics. First thing's first, this is not the alternative to PUBG Mobile that many thought it would be. Sure, the multiplayer mode isn't here yet, but after playing the initial story mode of the game, we aren't too excited to wait for the other modes.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: Graphics

The graphics were on-point looking at the first version of the game. Since it has been developed locally, it is a moment of immense proudness for everyone in India. However, even after decent graphics, the gameplay didn't offer much to explore around the area. We expect the graphics to improve further as more versions of the game are rolled out, and along with that, we also expect a better frame rate support. If we compare the graphics with PUBG Mobile though, FAU-G lags behind severely.

Users do get an option to increase the graphic rates to Ultra, just like in PUBG Mobile, but it doesn't create a lot of difference is what we experienced.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: Modes and Storyline

There is only one mode out for the users to play right now. It is a campaign mode which has a decent storyline. Users can skip the storyline if they want and jump straight to the game. Do note that the location is inspired by the real Galwan Valley; however, the story is not. It is a fictional story developed for the game.

What we did like about the game was subtle Hindi narration. However, it needs to be timed a little better since, on many occasions, dialogues were coming while fighting the enemies taking the feel out of the game. In terms of weapon options, users don't get any guns such as in PUBG Mobile.

This was a deliberate decision taken by the developers to make the storyline more authentic and Indian. Users get knives and long-swords (not too sure what they are called), to hit their opponents. The weapons offer limited hits only.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: What We Didn't Like and What Can be Improved

The thing that we didn't like about the game was its fighting sequence. One guy has to fight several people at the same time, and there is nothing realistic about it. The fighting moves get older within two minutes of playing, and the use of weapons isn't exciting in any manner.

What needs to be improved is the weapon pickup time and fighting sequence. The fighting is just way too boring, and there isn't a lot one can do in the storyline except for running straight and using the same moves to kill the same kind of enemies level after level.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: What's Good?

So the thing that we liked about the game was its audio and delivery. First of all, it is very easy to understand what the game is about because the delivery and narration are very easy to comprehend. The audio is on point with the cold wind chiming in the ears, and the hits on the bodies of the enemies come out very real.

FAU-G Gameplay Review: Worth Playing?

Well, that depends a lot on the user. If you are someone who is comparing it with PUBG Mobile all the time, you will not like the game. But on its own, the game is pretty decent for passing the time. But we could see how anyone will get bored with it very fast. Thus, the game still has a long way to go, and the developers really need to keep the user's attention by introducing regular updates and better gameplay experience.

Realme has been teasing it's fans about the arrival of the X7 series for quite some time, with it's India Head Madhav Sheth taking to Twitter at one point, asking the Realme fans as to what would be the apt packaging for the X7 series. After multiple speculations, today, the company sent out invites, wherein it is stated that the series will be making its Indian debut on February 4, 2021. The date is not that far away, adding to our excitement. The launch invite clearly states that the Realme X7 series launch event will be held at 12:30 PM (IST) on Feb. 4 in India. The event will be available to view through YouTube and other social media accounts. The X7 series, which made its debut in other markets back in 2020, has been long-awaited in the Indian market.

Realme X7 Specifications

Since both these devices have been launched in other markets, we know the specifications that these devices sport. The X7 features a 6.4-inch AMOLED 1080p display with support for 120Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate. The display also has Corning Gorilla Glass protection and a screen-to-body ratio of 90.8 per cent, which is quite impressive.

As for performance, the X7 marks the debut of the Dimensity 800U chipset in the Indian market, with Realme having confirmed the arrival of the same through its launch invites, that are being sent out as of today.

In terms of the cameras, the X7 sports a 64-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with 119-degree FOV, a 2-megapixel black-and-white camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. There is also a 32-megapixel selfie snapper, present within the punch-hole.

Storage is nothing to worry about, with the device coming with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal UFS 2.1 storage that can be expanded. The phone runs on Android 10-based on Realme UI, and there is a decently sized 4300 mAh battery with support for 65W charging to power the device.

Realme X7 Pro Specifications

The Realme X7 Pro features a 6.55-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 4,500mAh battery. The cameras on both devices are identical, with the only change being the primary sensor, wherein the X7 Pro sports the Sony IMX 682 sensor.

In terms of the performance, the X7 Pro will mark the Dimensity 1000+ chipset’s debut, which is an enhanced version of the 800U. The device also has support for up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The battery is slightly larger, with the X7 Pro sporting a 4500 mAh battery compared to the 4300 mAh unit on the X7.

Both phones support 65W fast charging (in some markets, since Taiwan's variant has support for 50W) and are fitted with in-screen fingerprint sensors.

vodafone-idea-users-free-access-to-voot-select

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has partnered with Voot Select to offer its users free access to the premium content library of this over-the-top (OTT) service. For the unaware, Voot Select is a subscription led OTT service owned by Viacom18. It is a strategic partnership between both parties. Now users will have much more incentive to subscribe to a Vi offering, and Voot Select will be able to access a larger chunk of the Indian market. The service will be offered to the users of Vi via its own OTT platform – Vi Movies & TV — more details on the story ahead.

Vodafone Idea Partners With Voot Select

Vi users will now be able to access several hundred hours worth of premium content from the library of Voot Select. There won't be any additional cost for the users to access this benefit. Some of the noteworthy original television shows such as Asur, Illegal, The Gone Game, Big Boss, and more will be available for the users.

Vi users can also get access to international TV shows such as Top Gear, Shark Tank, Tin Star, The Office, Pink Collar Crimes, Nancy Drew, and more for free with this benefit. Voot Select normally comes for Rs 99 per month or Rs 399 per year. But for Vi users, it will be free of cost.

Digital content consumption has seen tremendous growth over the last few years, especially in 2020. With the world being on a lockdown, users relied on digital content more and more for their entertainment. Vi partnering up with Voot Select is a good sign for the telco since this means it is keeping up with the trend and offering something that other telecom operators aren't.

It is worth noting that none of the other telcos offers Voot Select with their prepaid plans. Vi is the first in the Indian telecom space to do so. It is a major boost for Vi Movies & TV app which already hosts 1000+ hours of content on the platform.

Through Vi Movies & TV, users can stream 9,500+ movies in 13 different languages and access 400+ live TV channels. The platform also has multiple international titles across all genres to keep the users entertained.

It will be interesting to see if this OTT incentive will be enough for the new users to subscribe and old users to keep subscribing with the telco's services. Would you recharge with a Vi plan to gain access to this benefit? If yes, which plan would you go for? Leave your answer in the comments section below.

samsung-galaxy-a02-with-mediatek-mt6739-soc

Samsung has just launched a new smartphone for the Thailand market, namely Galaxy A02. It is an entry-level device with decent specifications to compete with other low-range smartphones. There is a standard dual-camera setup at the rear and a tear-drop notch at the front housing the selfie-camera. The device was launched very silently and was listed on the website of Thailand without any announcements. The device comes with a massive 5,000mAh battery which is a great thing since it is an entry-level smartphone. For more information regarding the specifications and price of Samsung Galaxy A02, keep reading ahead.

Samsung Galaxy A02 Specifications

Samsung Galaxy A02 comes with a 6.52-inch HD+ (720×1560 pixels) Infinity-V display. It is powered by the MediaTek MT6739 SoC. It worth mentioning that this chipset from MediaTek was unveiled by the company in 2017 for mid-range to entry-level smartphones. Thus it is strange to see that Samsung has decided to launch a new smartphone with this chipset in 2021. The SoC is coupled with up to 3GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. The internal storage of the device can be expanded up to 1TB with the help of a microSD card.

The Samsung Galaxy A02 will run on Android 10 out of the box. In the camera department, as mentioned above, there are dual-cameras at the rear and a notch at the front housing the selfie camera. The primary sensor at the rear of the device is a 13MP lens paired with a 2MP macro sensor with LED flash. For clicking selfies and video calling, there is a 5MP sensor at the front.

It is a dual-SIM device which is capable of supporting 4G LTE connectivity along with Bluetooth 5, and Wi-Fi. There is also a 3.5mm audio jack for users who want to use earphones. The Samsung Galaxy A02 ships with a massive 5,000mAh battery and standard charging support of 7.75W. It is a little heavy weighing at 206 grams and measures 164.0mmx75.9mmx9.1mm.

Samsung Galaxy A02 Price

Samsung hasn't revealed the price of the product yet. But as per a report from Sammobile, the device is expected to be priced THB 2,999 (approximately Rs 7,500). If the South Korean tech giant indeed offers this device at the expected price range, it will easily become one of the best smartphones in the segment. The device has everything an entry-level device is expected to have. The only bummer is the chipset that's used by Samsung.

STL to Setup Backend Network Infrastructure for 5G in India

stl-to-setup-backend-network-infrastructure-for-5g

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) will contribute in building India's 5G infrastructure for a smooth rollout of the next-generation network. It is worth noting that the company launched three different wireless products in the previous quarter. STL will soon commercially deploy Open Radio Access Network (Open-RAN) which is important for building the backend infrastructure for the rollout of 5G. As per a Livemint report, CEO of STL, Anand Agrawal, said that the company’s new products could be used for indoor and outdoor deployment of small cells and radio sets — more details on the story ahead.

Investment in Wireless Radio Infrastructure Necessary

Agrawal emphasised on the need for wireless radio infrastructure in the country. He said that to improve coverage and quality of network in dense areas, huge investment on wireless radios is required.

For the unaware, a network consists of two parts – optical fibre for transmission and wireless radio. India is self-sufficient when it comes to optical fibre technology. But in the case of wireless radio, which is important for the backend network support; India imports it from companies such as Ericsson, ZTE, and Huawei. Thus an investment for the same needs to come from the government and the telecom operators.

Agrawal said that India would see 5G on the second-half of 2022. It is in contrast with what Mukesh Ambani has promised to the people of India. Ambani said that Jio would launch its homegrown 5G in the second half of 2021.

At the same time, Bharti Airtel's Chairman, Sunil Mittal has expressed on several occasions that 5G is two to three years away from India. He has cited reasons such as over-priced spectrum and an underdeveloped 5G ecosystem in the country. Also, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is not in a financial position to move into 5G any time soon.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) in a report on January 22, 2021, said that the Indian telcos have lesser average spectrum holding (31 MHz) than the global average of 50 MHz. On top of this, the weak financial health of the industry will impact on the operators' ability to purchase new spectrum, which will further impact the 5G rollout in the country.

Agrawal suggested that the government should increase the customs duty on the optical fibre imported to the country so that foreign vendors can be stopped from dumping their products in India. There is plenty of fibre supply to meet India’s demands; thus, imports of the same should be discouraged.

PUBG Mobile India Comeback Uncertain as Government Permanently Bans TikTok

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/pubg-mobile-india-comeback-uncertain/329967/, PUBG Mobile India Comeback Uncertain as Government Permanently Bans TikTok

PUBG Mobile India may never make a comeback as the government reportedly imposed a permanent ban on TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps. A Livemint report citing person aware of the development said the government is not satisfied with the responses received from TikTok, WeChat and other apps which were banned earlier. Hence, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued fresh notices to these apps last week. This news will probably disappoint a lot of PUBG Mobile players as they are eagerly waiting for the game to make a comeback. Earlier reports suggested that the officials at PUBG Mobile India made multiple attempts to meet the officials at MeitY to discuss the lifting of the ban on popular battle royale game.

Will PUBG Mobile Make a Comeback in India?

It has been close to five months since PUBG Mobile’s ban in India. In November, PUBG Corporation said the game is making a comeback with a different name ‘PUBG Mobile India’ and some customisations. As it turns out, PUBG Corporation did not have required permissions for a possible relaunch. Since then, there’s no update on the game’s comeback, and with every passing day, the chances are getting slim.

So far, the MeitY banned over 250 mobile apps in the country, and TikTok was part of the first list of apps banned on June 29, 2020. Now, the news of the permanent ban on TikTok and 58 other applications suggest the popular mobile game may also hold a similar fate.

PUBG Mobile India officials are actively working on bringing back the game, but the government isn’t satisfied with the responses so far. The major concern with PUBG Mobile was data security and the gameplay nature. Immediately after the ban, PUBG Corporation partnered with Microsoft Azure to host the players’ data locally.

India was the biggest market for PUBG Mobile, and if the game never makes a comeback, it will be a huge blow for PUBG Corporation. PUBG Mobile rival FAU-G was released to much fanfare yesterday and received mixed reviews from the players. FAU-G has just single-player campaign mode at the launch, while PUBG Mobile players are interested in the battle royale mode. In other news, PUBG Corporation and Krafton are currently working on PUBG Mobile 2.0 with a revamped gameplay and characters. As of this writing, there’s no update officially from PUBG India on the game’s return.

FAU-G Garners Over 1 Million Installs on the First Day of Launch

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/fau-g-launch-day-installations/329934/, FAU-G Garners Over 1 Million Installs on the First Day of Launch

nCore Games-developed FAU-G: Fearless and United Guards has amassed over one million installs on launch day. FAU-G was available for pre-registrations on Google Play Store since November 30. Before the launch, the game maker said it received over five million pre-registrations for FAU-G. There’s no doubt that FAU-G is on to a decent start with one million downloads, however, the game did not reach a lot of player expectations. nCore Games launched the game with only one mode- single-player campaign mode set at the Galwan Valley. Other modes such as 5v5 Team Deathmatch and Free for All are listed to be introduced soon. nCore Games also confirmed that the iOS version of FAU-G would be launched on the App Store in 3-4 months.

Did You Install FAU-G on the Launch Day?

With only Android release, FAU-G managed to have over one million installations with a rating of 4.1. The numbers sound impressive, while the actual game did not inspire a lot of confidence. The announcement of FAU-G came just after two days of PUBG Mobile’s ban in India. And the expectations were sky-high, especially those players who are waiting for PUBG Mobile India return.

Before releasing the game on Google Play Store, nCore Games did not exactly reveal what will be included at the launch. As a result, players were left disappointed. As noted, FAU-G had just a single-player campaign mode with 'Tales from Galwan Valley' as the core storyline. The game did have a couple of other modes listed which includes the 5v5 Team Deathmatch mode, but they weren’t available to play right away. Maybe, FAU-G will enable these modes with a forthcoming update. nCore Games earlier stated FAU-G would not have Team Deathmatch mode at the launch, but the lack of a proper multi-player mode disappointed many.

FAU-G also has in-app purchases using which players can purchase new weapons, axes and so on. FAU-G players can buy these items using their real money or via the rewards earned by playing the game. It will be interesting to see when nCore Games will enable the two disabled modes. We are not expecting it to happen anytime soon. In other news, the launch of PUBG Mobile India is still uncertain, so a lot of players will also jump into FAU-G at least to try the game.

Did you download FAU-G and how is your experience so far with the only available mode? Let us know by commenting below.
