As per data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), Bharti Airtel, which announced earlier today that it had tested 5G in India, in a commercial manner had gained more mobile users, or subscribers, in comparison to the market leader, Jio, for the fourth consecutive month in November. This is a sign of users shifting from Vi and migrating to Airtel, which is poor news for VI, which keeps losing out customers day in and day out. Bharti Airtel managed to add 4.3 million new customers, while Jio managed to grab just 1.9 million subscribers in November 2020. On the flip side, we have Vodafone Idea that lost 2.8 million existing users. With this, the overall subscriber base of Bharti Airtel increased to 334.66 million at the end of November 2020. Airtel also has the maximum number of active subscribers in the industry.

What do the Numbers Indicate?

In terms of raw numbers, Bharti Airtel gained a whopping 4.37 million wireless subscribers against Jio's 1.93 million, while struggling Vi lost 2.89 million users in November, indicated the data released by Trai on Thursday.

The data further showed that Airtel's November user base increased to 334.6 Million, in comparison to Jio, which has a total user base of 408.2 million. VI's user base, which has been on a decline, stood at 289.9 million, according to the report.

To add to the announcements, for those unaware, Jio recently stated a user base of almost 411 million for the quarter that ended on December 31, 2020. Airtel and Vi are yet to report their earnings for Q3 FY21.

Customer market share wise, the data showcased that Airtel and Jio increased their customer market share to 28.97% and 35.34%, while Vi's had decreased to 25.10% over the previous month.

The Trai Telecom Subscription Data report for November 2020 also highlighted that Airtel has the maximum proportion of its active wireless subscribers (VLR) as against its total wireless subscribers (HLR). As noted, Airtel ended November 2020 with a total of 334.66 million subscribers, out of which 323.39 million (96.63%) users are active.

Vodafone Idea is second on the VLR list with 89.01% subscribers active on the network out of 289.95 million. Reliance Jio is fourth on the list with just 79.55% (324.78 million) active users out of 408.29 million total subscribers. We expect Bharti Airtel to have more active subscribers than Reliance Jio in the next couple of months. Reliance Jio now has two worries- low subscriber additions and poor active user base (VLR). The Mukesh Ambani-owned telco would be aiming to get back to track at the earliest.

Bharti Airtel Doubles Down on 5G: Here’s What it Means for the Consumers

Bharti Airtel, in a press conference on Thursday, stated that it can immediately roll out 5G in India, provided that it has adequate spectrums on hand, from the Indian government. The company believes it can do so, as it recently proved it's 5G capabilities by a live 5G showcase in the city of Hyderabad.

How Was this Done?

This feat was achieved via its existing spectrum in the 1800 MHz band, via the NSA network technology. Airtel stated that it seamlessly operated 5G and 4G with the same spectrum, using a dynamic spectrum sharing model. This validated the readiness in all three domains of the network, namely Radio, Core and Transport.

During the event, the representatives of the company also provided us with some numbers, wherein they said that 5G is capable of providing 10x speeds, 10x latency and 100x concurrency when compared to existing technologies.

As a showcase of this, during the tests, they showed the ability to download a full-length movie in a matter of seconds, via a 5G phone on the 5G network. Do note, that the full impact of the 5G experience will be on offer when the adequate spectrum is available and government approvals received.

Why Do We Believe Airtel May Be First to Rollout 5G in India?

According to a previous press release, Bharti Airtel announced that it has the capability to operate 5G via its current spectrum in mid-bands (1800,2100,2300MHz) as well as sub-GHz bands (800/900 MHz)

While this might seem to a statement and not accounting too much, but, in reality, if the government permits, Airtel can operate 5G and 4G within the same spectrum, making 5G a reality in a matter of months.

The demonstration in Hyderabad also validated all the claims that were made by the company, proving that the company was not all talk and no show. This also stated that the company could fully deliver on 5G, that too before the end of the year.

With simple software upgrades to the infrastructure, Airtel could easily switch the existing infrastructure without any major costs. This would also help the rollout to be wider, rather than being limited to tier-1 cities.

Should You Go Out and Buy a 5G Phone Now?

No, these are proof of the capabilities that the telecom providers possess, but, if you take a look at the press conference and the statements made, Airtel still believes that changes can be made and, as of now, they do not have permission to roll out 5G.
This is a mere symbolism of the fact that when the company is given clearance, it will not require an additional waiting period, rather, the company will be ready to dive into the 5G crowd, making it accessible to the general consensus.

Facebook Brings Same World-Class Privacy to Messenger, WhatsApp: Zuckerberg

facebook-brings-world-class-privacy-messenger-whatsapp
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the fourth quarter earnings call on Wednesday said that the company brings the "same world-class privacy features" to WhatsApp and Messenger. Zuckerberg said that the "biggest difference between Messenger and WhatsApp is, obviously, the connection to Facebook and the kind of same identity" that people use on Facebook carries over to Messenger. Crucially, Zuckerberg also said that the company has "a lot of competitors who make claims about privacy that are often misleading" and that "WhatsApp is clearly superior." In early January, WhatsApp unveiled a new privacy policy update initially said to be effective from February. However, the company faced a backlash post the policy update leading to the users downloading alternate applications such as Signal and Telegram.

Zuckerberg Says WhatsApp Policy Update Does Not Change Privacy of Messages

Zuckerberg said that WhatsApp is an "important" part of the company's strategy with "more than 175 million people" communicating with a WhatsApp business account each single day.

"We’re building new features to make it even easier to transact with businesses in the app," Zuckerberg said in the earnings call on Wednesday. "We introduced carts, which lets people browse catalogs, select multiple products, and send the order as a message to a business. The more people that interact with businesses, the better tools we're going to need to provide for businesses to help them support their customers."

The Facebook CEO said that the company is "building tools to let businesses store and manage their WhatsApp chats using our secure hosting infrastructure if they would like." Crucially, Zuckerberg said that the privacy policy update unveiled by WhatsApp in January reflects the "optional experiences."

"To clarify some confusion that we've seen, this update does not change the privacy of anyone’s messages with friends and family," Zuckerberg said in the earnings call on Wednesday. "All of these messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means we can’t see or hear what you say, and we never will unless the person you messaged chooses to share it."

Facebook to Make "Minimal" Functionality Enhancements to WhatsApp

With WhatsApp, Zuckerberg said that the company has "always focused a lot on making it a very utilitarian experience."

"So we’ll continue adding new functionality, but we’re more focused on keeping that minimal,” Zuckerberg said in the earnings call on Wednesday. “Whereas in Messenger, we have a lot more tools and features for expression and I would expect that we’ll continue adding more there as well."

The social networking company earlier in the day reported its financial results for the quarter and full year ended December 31, 2020, with Facebook registering US$28.1 billion in quarterly revenues. Facebook said that its daily active users (DAUs) were up 11% year-over-year (YoY) to 1.84 billion on average for December 2020. Further, the company said that it has 2.80 billion monthly active users (MAUs) as of December 31, 2020, translating to an 12% YoY increase.

oneplus-6-and-oneplus-6t-oxygenos-10-3-8-update

One of the best things about being a OnePlus user is that you won't have to worry much about regular updates. While the Chinese tech giant has been slow at rolling out updates for its older devices on certain occasions, it has more than covered up for it on any opportunity it got. Now, OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T users are receiving the OxygenOS 10.3.8 update. It is the latest over-the-air (OTA) update announced by OnePlus for the OnePlus 6 series devices. The update comes with the latest Android Security patch and more. Read ahead to find out about all the details of OxygenOS 10.3.8.

OxygenOS 10.3.8 Details, Features, Changelog

OnePlus has shared about the OxygenOS 10.3.8 update for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T devices on one of its forum posts. The OnePlus 6 users will get three major things with this update. First is an update GMS package to 2020.09. Second is the Android Security Patch of January 2021. Then lastly, the third major update is the Red Cable Club membership being updated to 1.2.0.2.

There are other things included on the update package as well. The devices get minor system adjustments to improve overall performance. Then, users will notice a OnePlus Store application installed on their devices.

It is not a mandatory application to keep. If you want to delete it, you can do so and reinstall it from the Google Play Store whenever you wish. For the unaware, OnePlus Store app allows users to purchase all the old and new OnePlus products from one place. There are even vouchers inside the application which users can apply to their purchases for getting discounts.

OnePlus has confirmed that it is an OTA update that will be rolled out in a staged manner. This means that some users will get it earlier than others. So if you haven't received the update yet, you don't have to worry, it is on the way. To check for the update manually, you can also go to Settings > System > System Updates. If there is an update, it will reflect here.

OnePlus has confirmed that both the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T will receive OxygenOS 11 update based on Android 11. The device was launched back in 2018, and the Android 11 update should be the last series of major updates for the device. Along with OnePlus 6 series, OnePlus 7 series is also set to receive the Android 11 update in the future. It is unlikely that OnePlus will roll out Android 11 update for the OnePlus 5 series now.

WhatsApp Web is getting new and enhanced security features. Now users will have to authenticate the linking or login of their WhatsApp account on the desktop app through fingerprints or Face ID. This new security feature will keep others from trying to login through your device when you are not there. In terms of privacy, WhatsApp won't store any of the biometrics data on its servers. The complete authentication process will be carried out on the device itself. Adding to this, WhatsApp can't even access any of the biometric data stored locally on the device — more details on the story ahead.

WhatsApp New Security Features for Desktop App

The biometric authentication will be an extra layer of security provided for the users to prevent fraud logins and unethical use of the desktop app. So the next time any user is trying to log in on the WhatsApp Web application, he/she will be asked to authenticate the process by either providing fingerprint or Face ID. Only once the biometric authentication is completed, users will be allowed to access the QR code scanner on the smartphone.

WhatsApp said that this would limit the people at the user's workplace or home to access his/her WhatsApp on their desktops without the account owner’s permission. This is an extension to the current security measure which lets the user know through a pop-up that his/her WhatsApp is being accessed in another device. Users also have the option to unlink their WhatsApp from any of the devices they want to.

This new security feature hasn't rolled out yet. WhatsApp has said that it will be rolling out this feature in the next few weeks globally. There will also be a visual redesign rolled out for WhatsApp Web pages being operated in phones.

The social media giant has said that it cannot access or store any biometric information by design. This new feature will certainly be a bonus for people who are worried about their chats being hacked.

WhatsApp Privacy Policy Implementation New Date

WhatsApp saw a strong pushback from its users globally for the new privacy policies introduced. No one was happy with the company collecting personal data of the users and not even giving them an option to decline the new policies in certain countries such as India. Since users started shifting to other applications, WhatsApp has extended the new last date for the policies to be accepted to May 15, 2021. Earlier this date was February 8, 2021.

iPhone 12 Series Helps Apple Set New Selling Records: Report

iphone-12-apple-set-new-selling-records

Apple's decision of bringing four different iPhone 12 models has clearly worked. We won't be going much into which model became the most successful amongst the four, but we will be peeking at the total sales that iPhone 12 series garnered for the company. The Cupertino tech giant witnessed a 22% growth in the iPhone shipments in the holiday quarter of 2020. This feat helped Apple become the largest smartphone seller globally. As per a research firm IDC, Apple shipped over 90.1 million iPhone units in the last quarter of 2020. It is worth noting that this is the highest number of iPhones Apple has ever shipped in a single quarter — more details on the story ahead.

Apple's Revenues Crossed $100 Billion For the First Time in a Single Quarter

With a record number of iPhone shipments in a single quarter, what followed with the revenue was not surprising at all. Apple amassed over a record $111.4 billion which is 21% higher year-on-year basis.

What's interesting is that 64% of the quarter's revenue came from international markets. iPhone 12 series was one of the biggest contributing factors in the record quarterly sales for the company. As per a report from Counterpoint Research, iPhone 12 had become the best selling 5G smartphone globally just after 14 days (two weeks) from its launch.

Focusing on India, Tim Cook said that Apple had doubled its business in the country compared to the last quarter of 2019. Adding to this, Apple saw a 57% rise in iPhone sales in China with iPhone 12 5G leading the way.

What Did Apple do Good?

First of all, it is noteworthy that the iPhone 12 series launched much later than it was supposed to. This created high-anticipation and excitement for the series in the market. With the inclusion of '5G', Apple made its smartphone future-proof, meaning users were less reluctant to spend or rather invest huge sums of money on an iPhone.

Then, Apple opened its first retail store in India called, 'Apple India Store' in September 2020. Tim Cook said that the online store helped Apple a lot in increasing its sales in the last quarter. Apple also has plans to start manufacturing the iPhone 12 series in India. Further, the tech giant has plans for opening offline retail stores in the country very soon.

With these record sales, Apple took the first position from Samsung in being the biggest smartphone maker in the world.

It is important not to ignore the new iPad Air 2020 and MacBooks with M1 chipset, which contributed a lot to the company’s global sales.

Airtel Network 5G Ready, Offers 10x Speed and 10x Latency on Test

airtel-networks-5g-ready-commericial-test-successful

Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, has said that its network is 5G ready. It became the first operator in the country to test 5G commercially. Airtel demonstrated live 5G services in Hyderabad through its 1800 MHz liberalised spectrum band. The telco said users could download big movies in a matter of seconds on a 5G device. It is worthy to note that Airtel operated both 4G and 5G in the same spectrum block concurrently. Thus Bharti Airtel has claimed that its network is 5G ready — more details on the story ahead.

Bharti Airtel Made its Network 5G Ready Using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing Technologies

As mentioned above, Bharti Airtel has said that its network is 5G ready. The telco has done this using dynamic spectrum sharing technologies. This means that Airtel can provide 5G services through its existing technology-neutral mid-bands (1800/2100/2300 MHz bands) and sub-GHz bands (800/900 MHz bands).

If permitted by the government, the telco has said it can deploy 5G in a matter of months. Users will be able to get both 4G and 5G through the same spectrum block. With this and the future spectrum allocations for the telco in 3.5 GHz bands, it would place the telco in a position to deliver world-class 5G services.

Upon availing 5G for a brief period for testing in Hyderabad, Airtel observed that it could provide 10x latency, 10x speeds, and 100x concurrency compared from the current technologies.

Airtel has said that it can now shift to 5G with a few simple software upgrades. It won't need to replace the current antennas or radio assets. Thus with virtually no major increase in operational costs, the telco will roll out 5G throughout India. The same technology will help Airtel deploy 5G in the 3.5 GHz band after it is allocated.

All that the telco is waiting for is the government’s approval and adequate spectrum being available to roll out 5G in a smooth manner India-wide.

This certainly puts Airtel ahead of the other telcos at the moment. With a 5G ready network, Airtel can be the first 5G service provider in the country beating Mukesh Ambani led Jio to it. It is worth noting that Jio said that India would be 5G ready by the second half of 2021.

Airtel did its 5G testings in a very discreet manner and has taken the industry by surprise. It will be worth the wait to see which telco rolls out 5G first in the country.

Aircel Looking to Monetise Assets Besides Spectrum, Report

aircel-looking-to-monetise-assets-besides-spectrum

Aircel, a former Indian telecom operator, filed for bankruptcy in 2018, is now looking to monetise its assets other than spectrum. The operator will consider appealing for the same at the dedicated bankruptcy court. Aircel wants to monetise its non-spectrum assets for paying salaries to its employees and maintain assets until the time its legal tussle with the telecom department is over. The company will transfer the money realised from assets sale to an escrow account through which it will pay salaries to around 200 employees and carry out other necessary expenses — more details on the story ahead.

Aircel's Assets Dip by 50% in Value Because of Regulatory Delays

Aircel is in a tight financial situation. The company has already delayed in paying salaries to its employees, and the regulatory delays are not helping. As per an ET Telecom report, an executive said that even after the court order last year, the monetisation hasn't happened because of regulatory delays. It has further resulted in a reduction in the value of the company’s assets by up to 50%.

The court order being referred to here is the one that came from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in June 2020. The order gave permission to the UV Asset Reconstruction Company (UVARCL) for purchasing Aircel and its two units for 74% stake. UVARCL then had to pay off around Rs 6,630 crore to the company’s financial creditors in the next five years.

However, because of the devaluation of assets by 50%, it means that the creditors will only be able to recover up to 3,000 crores. So what are the regulatory delays that are pushing Aircel to monetise its non-spectrum assets?

Firstly, the appellate court’s verdict is awaited on whether a company can sell the spectrum when it hasn't cleared its statutory dues on it. Secondly, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision on whether UVARCL can be involved in the telco's resolution proposal is awaited.

Aircel holds spectrum in the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands which is its most prized possession as of now. It can help the telco in a large manner to clear out dues. But for that to happen, the government and the telecom department will have to make quick decisions. It will be interesting to see whether Aircel actually moves to the court with this appeal and when it does, what will actually happen.

For the unaware, Aircel declared bankruptcy back in 2018 and had debts over Rs 26,000 crore.

Telegram Users on iOS Can Now Import Individual Chats from WhatsApp

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/telegram-ios-users-import-chats-whatsapp/330604/, Telegram Users on iOS Can Now Import Individual Chats from WhatsApp

Telegram has added the ability to import individual chats from WhatsApp on iOS. The Facebook-owned WhatsApp is all over the place after letting users know about the new privacy policy that was initially set to roll out from February 8. A large chunk of WhatsApp users are migrating to either Telegram or Signal. While Signal is plagued with user handling issues, Telegram is welcoming all the WhatsApp users. In fact, the company is actively rolling out new features to attract WhatsApp users. The major question WhatsApp users had in their minds is how to get their chats on Telegram. Well, that wasn’t possible earlier. But now, it is possible with Telegram 7.4 update. Telegram has rolled out the ability to import individual chats from WhatsApp. Check more details regarding the new feature below.

How to Import WhatsApp Chat to Telegram?

The process of importing WhatsApp chats to Telegram is very simple, but the major letdown here is you’ll have to import every chat individually. Yes, you read it right. You can even import WhatsApp Group chats to Telegram, however, you will have to create a group in the latter and add members manually.

The process starts in the WhatsApp application first. Head over the personal or group chat in WhatsApp, and hunt for the ‘Export Chat’ option. You can access the Export Chat option in iOS by hitting the contact name on the top and by scrolling down to the bottom.

Hit the Export Chat option and select the Telegram app from the iOS Share Sheet. The best part is users can import the chats from WhatsApp to Telegram with or without media. After selecting the Telegram app from the iOS Share Sheet, it will redirect you to Telegram and further asks you to select a contact to import the chat. After selecting the contact, the importing process will begin and it will take some time for the process to finish. If you are exporting chat with media, the process will take more than one minute to finish. And it also depends on the chat file size; A 157MB chat export took around two minutes on my iPhone 12.

The process of importing WhatsApp Group Chat to Telegram is also the same, albeit at the end it will ask you to create a new group on Telegram. After creating the group on Telegram, you will have to manually add members to this group.

As noted, the feature is currently available only for iOS, but the Android version of Telegram may get it in the next couple of weeks.

The iPad Is 11 Years Old: Here’s a Look Down at Its Rich Past

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/apple-ipad-eleven-years-old/330565/, The iPad Is 11 Years Old: Here’s a Look Down at Its Rich Past

Wednesday, January 27, 2021, marked the 11th anniversary since Apple co-founder Steve Jobs went on stage to unveil the iPad. Little did the visionary know that, in the years since, the not so tiny piece of tech would cause tech giants to fret and worry, a tablet that broke the barrier between a laptop and tablet, ruling the category for a long time.

“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Jobs, in a press release on January 27, 2010. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

Today, we thought of taking a look down the iPad's rich history, from the first iPad to the latest iPad, taking a drip down memory lane, awed at the technical advances that have taken place within these eleven years. Do note, we will be including the versions that were cause for a change and impacted the tablet segment, for better or for worse.

1. iPad (2010): The Chosen One

The first iPad, the one that initiated this journey, was announced way back in 2010, in the month of January. The device offered a premium build, consisting of an all aluminium build, complete with square edges, which are a clear point of influence for the current generation iPad Pro.

The device came with a 9.7-inch display, with a thickness of 13mm, making it more of a brick and less of a slim tablet. The weight too was enough for a workout, with the iPad weighing in at a whopping 680 grams.

In terms of the performance, the difference is quite odd, with the 2010 model featuring a 1GHz Apple A4 chip, with support for three variants, namely 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The device quoted a battery life of 10 hours, which was quite a lot, in 2010 standards. The first-gen iPad was priced at $499, a markup over the current-gen iPad, which slots in at around $329.

2. Apple iPad 2: Snaptastic Launch

The second-gen iPad, which was unveiled in 2011, offered a major upgrade over the 1st gen model, with a much slimmer body, 33% to be exact, at a thickness of 8.8 mm. The weight too dropped to under 600 grams, which made the brick-like feeling much less likely. Performance too was doubled, with the dual-core A5 chip, paired with nine times faster graphics.

The biggest upgrade, however, comes in the form of cameras. What do we mean? Well, for all of the things that the iPad offered, it missed out a critical aspect, which was the camera. The iPad 2 addressed this issue with the inclusion of a front camera and a rear camera, allowing users to use FaceTime and video call each other, something that one thinks is a standard affair, at least in the modern age.

3. iPad 3rd Gen: Cue in the Retina

The third-gen iPad debuted back in 2012, with the design being pretty similar to that of the iPad 2. The one change that stuck out to the users was that of the display. The reason for the inclusion of the iPad 3rd gen is the screen, which was a "Retina display", a phrase that is still in use as of 2021. This change allowed for four times the pixels of the iPad 2, making it a massive change.

In addition to this, the 3rd gen iPad also came with the A5x chipset, which offered a bump up to a quad-core graphics processor, with the resolution of the camera also being upgraded, from 1MP to 5MP.

4. iPad 4th Gen: Lightning Strikes

The iPad 4 was an incremental upgrade in most aspects, but the 4th generation iPad ditched the 30-pin connector in favour of lightning port, something that Apple seems to have an obsession over, with the 2020 portfolio of iPhones still sticking to lightning, despite the entire industry having shifted to the far more common USB Type-C.

The display was the same as the 3rd gen iPad, although the performance saw a minor upgrade, thanks to the A6x processor, which promised to be twice as fast as the 3rd gen iPad. The 4th Gen iPad also came with support for dual-band Wi-Fi and a new front-facing camera, with a resolution of 1.2MP.

5. iPad Air: Lighter than Air

The iPad 5th generation was renamed as the iPad Air, owing mostly to a fresh design to the iPad. This design took cues from the curved edges of Apple's iPad Mini, which was a smaller, curvier iPad with close, if not similar specifications, at least to some extent. This tablet was 20% lighter than the iPad 4, weighing in at 469 grams.

In the list of changes, Apple also reduced the bezels by about 43%, providing a larger viewing area in the same footprint. The chip also got a minor bump, up from the A6 to the A7 Bionic chip, with support for 64-bit architecture, that came with numerous benefits.

6. iPad Pro (2015)

Apple marked a shift in the tablet segment with the launch of the iPad Pro in 2015, shaking up the segment and paving the way for future advancements in tablets. In terms of the display, there was a sizeable shift to a huge 12.9-inch display with 5.6 million pixels and a variable refresh rate to help save power.

It had a quad-speaker setup in comparison to dual speakers on the iPad Air 2, allowing for three times the volume, with an increased speed of 1.8x owing to the A9X chipset.

Towards the side, the 6.9mm slim iPad Pro had a Smart Connector meant for connecting a dedicated keyboard and allowing for data transfer and power. The iPad Pro also marked the announcement of the Apple Pencil, a stylus that is one of, if not the best styluses on commercial devices.

Right now, Apple has four iPad lineups on offer- the premium iPad Pro, the sleeker and lighter iPad Air, the regular iPad aimed at the students and the iPad mini for those looking for a small screen iPad.
