Kerala Government Aims to Provide Affordable Broadband With New Fibre Optic Network Service

Kerala Government finally announced Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) in the state. As the name itself suggests, KFON is the government’s initiative to provide high-speed and affordable internet to every household in Kerala. As part of this project, more than 30,000 government institutions will be enabled with high-speed internet. KFON will provide broadband speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced earlier today. The project has been in the works since 2019. It is a joint venture between Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). KFON will make use of KSEB’s vast network across the state and a special operating centre will be set up in Ernakulam.

Kerala Government Says Affordable Internet for All With KFON

In recent times, we have seen a lot of state governments launching a fibre optic network. In Telangana, the government has T-Fiber while in Andhra Pradesh, there’s AP-Fiber. State governments are launching these initiatives to provide affordable broadband across the country. As noted, KFON is a project jointly developed by Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and KSEB.

Kerala CM said KFON would provide free internet connectivity to 20 lakh BPL families and 14 districts will be covered as part of this project. KFON will also help the government provide high-speed internet across 30,000 government institutions. The Chief Minister also said KFON would ‘revolutionise the digital space.’

As noted, KFON will leverage KSEB’s infrastructure to set up a core ring and a 35,000-kilometre-long optic fibre network is being laid. He also added that this optic fibre would be the largest network once laid. KFON solves the major concern of villages not getting high-speed internet because private service providers are most interested in delivering internet services in major cities. With KFON, any service provider will make use of the network and deliver speeds even in villages ranging from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps.

As of this writing, the Kerala Government did not reveal the plans’ prices, but we are expecting them to be on the affordable side.

sc-governments-regulating-ott-platforms

The Supreme Court (SC) of India has asked the government to file an affidavit on the actions it plans to take for regulating the over-the-top (OTT) platforms. When the SC asked the government how it proposes to regulate the OTT platforms, the centre replied that it is still contemplating on what needs to be done and has not finalised the steps yet. The SC didn't take the comment light-heartedly and said it 'cannot accept mere contemplates' and thus asked the government to file an affidavit on what it is doing related to the matter — more details on the story ahead.

Supreme Court Asks Government to File an Affidavit on What it Plans to Do

According to a report from ANI, the SC bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde has sought an affidavit from the government on the actions it is taking to regulate the OTT platforms. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the government said that the centre is taking the issue very seriously and is planning to do something soon.

To this, the SC asked the petitioners to file for a representation with the government and give their suggestions on the matter. For the unaware, the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for the regulation of OTT platforms by an autonomous body was filed by advocates Apurva Arhatia and Shashank Shekhar Jha.

The PIL said that there isn't any proper body or institution in India to monitor and manage the content being offered to the public through OTT platforms. It said that since cinema halls and theatres are unlikely to open in full capacity soon, the OTT platforms give filmmakers and production houses an open platform to roll out their movies/series helping them skim through the process of getting the censor board's approval for their content.

In a separate case, the centre has also told the SC that a need for regulation of the OTT platforms is very important.

digital-intelligence-unit-announced-government

The government of India has recently announced digital Intelligence Unit (DIU). The DIU will communicate with the financial institutions, telcos, and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to investigate fraudulent acts committed through telecom resources. A redressal mechanism is being set up by the government, which will help users facing financial frauds and harassment through pesky calls or SMS file real-time complaints against the telemarketers or individuals. The government will facilitate users with a mobile application as well as a website platform and SMS system to lodge the complaints — more details on the story ahead.

Government Will Block SIM cards and Device of Perpetrators Directly

According to an ET Telecom report, the government is setting aside Rs 20 to 25 crore initially for setting up the system. As soon as the complaints start coming in, the government will block the SIM card and the device of the perpetrator directly through its system.

This will help the users gain their confidence back in making online transactions primarily through their smartphones. In a meeting held on Monday, Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s telecom minister, ordered strict action against all the telemarketers and individuals who harass mobile users in India.

Telemarketers or individuals who are found victims will also have to pay penalties because of the violation of laws set by the government. Prasad has also directed the telcos and the telemarketers to immediately stop the fraudulent behaviour and harassment towards the telecom subscribers in India.

The government has also asked the telcos to set up and define SMS headers format which every telemarketer or individual sending out bulk messages will have to follow. The telcos have extended the last date (January 31, 2021) for implementing the new SMS templates for the businesses until further notice. This is because the new SMS template was hard for around 50% of the businesses, including financial institutions to understand.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has just announced its new unlimited data offering for prepaid users. The telco will provide prepaid users with unlimited data without any fair usage policy (FUP) restrictions between 12 to 6 AM every day. Again, it is a unique data offer from Vi that no other telco is providing to its users at the moment. The unlimited data will come at no extra cost to the users and will be offered to every user who recharges with the Rs 249 plan or above.

Vi Unlimited Data for Users to Start at Midnight

Starting from midnight to 6 AM, Vi users recharging with the Rs 249 unlimited plan or more will get the benefit of unlimited data without any restrictions. Do note that the 'Weekend Data Rollover' offer will still be provided to the eligible users. Thus this offering is more of a bonus for the users since now they can get both the Weekend Data Rollover offer and the bonus data.

Vi said that the demand for over the top (OTT) content has risen a lot and night binging has become very common. Thus to help its users watch content seamlessly during the nights, it is offering them high-speed unlimited data.

With the addition of this offer, Vi is now providing users with three unique offers which no other telco is offering to its users in India. First is the 'Double Data Offer' under which users get double FUP data than what they are supposed to get. The second is 'Weekend Data Rollover' offer under which users can utilise all the unused data from the weekdays on the weekends. Now the third one which is 'Unlimited Data from Midnight to 6 AM' for night binging or whatever the users want to do with that data.

It will be interesting to see if Vi can retain old customers and also attract new ones with the unique offers it has rolled out.

Vodafone Idea Says Network is 5G Ready; Telco Likely to Hike Tariff Prices Soon

Telecom operator Vodafone Idea’s Managing Director and CEO Ravinder Takkar said the telco is deploying 5G-ready equipment across the country. During the post-earnings investor call, Takkar said Vi’s network is 5G-ready, both on radio and core fronts. He mentioned that whenever the 5G ecosystem develops in India, Vi will rollout 5G services in the country, depending on the spectrum availability. Just a couple of weeks ago, Bharti Airtel said its network is 5G-ready and once the 5G spectrum is available in the country, it will start rolling out the next-generation technology. Vi also believes that 5G ecosystem in India is still in early stages, but it is well prepared for the rollout of 5G. After going through a tough three years, Vi had a decent quarter that ended on December 31, 2020. Besides 5G, analysts believe Vi will also be the first telco to raise tariff prices again, as it did in December 2019.

Vodafone Idea Deploying 5G-Ready Network in India

Speaking at the post-earnings calls, Ravinder Takkar highlighted Vi’s efforts of deploying 5G-ready equipment in the country. At the moment, Vi is in the process of phasing out the 3G network across the country. The telco is expected to phase out 3G entirely in India by FY22.

Already, Bharti Airtel phased out 3G network across India and currently providing just 2G and 4G services. The CEO also highlighted that the 3,300MHz to 3,600MHz spectrum bands required for 5G rollout are very expensive. Moreover, it seems like Vi will play the wait and watch game when it comes to rolling out 5G services.

Keeping 5G launch aside, analysts believe that the next round of tariff hike in the industry is right around the corner. The Average Revenue per User (ARPU) of telcos is improving with every passing quarter. Vi posted an increase of Rs 2 in ARPU from Rs 119 to Rs 121 at the end of December 31, 2020.

In fact, it is also said that Vi will be the first in line to raise tariff prices. To recall, Vi was the first operator to announce tariff hike in November 2019 followed by the implementation in December 2019.

The tariff hike is a much-required one for Vodafone Idea as it posted a 1% increase in revenues to Rs 108.9 billion during Q3 FY21. Tariff hike will further boost Vi’s ARPU.

Essential Smartphone Brand Now Owned by Carl Pei’s New Venture Nothing

A few years ago, smartphone brand Essential made all the headlines in the market, thanks to its leader Andy Rubin. A new report now claims that Essential is now owned by Carl Pei’s new venture Nothing. Yes, you read it right; Nothing, which already confirmed to launch to launch wireless audio products in the near future, may enter the smartphone market as well. 9to5Google managed to find some filings at UK Intellectual Property Office which confirmed that Essential is now a property of Nothing Technologies. Essential is a US-based firm that announced PH-1 as its first smartphone in 2017, followed by a new project called ‘Project Gem’ which never made its way into the market. Before its shut down, Essential was also said to be working on smart home products like a smart bulb.

Nothing Technologies Now Owns Andy Rubin’s Essential

Essential launched its first smartphone in 2017, dubbed the Essential PH-1. The company, later on, teased a candy bar style phone as part of Project Gem. 9to5Google reports that Andy Rubin has sold off its Essential company to Nothing Technologies. Essential had some plans of launching smart home devices such as a smart speaker and smart bulb with Ambient OS, but they never saw the light of the day.

Nothing Technologies recently said it would launch wireless earbuds very soon along with a ‘wider focus’ on smart home technology in the future. Both Essential and Nothing Technologies seem to share a similar strategy, but the latter is yet to confirm its venture into the smartphone market.

At the moment, it is unknown what Nothing Technologies is up to, but we can expect it to enter the smartphone market in the coming years. Last week, Nothing managed to raise $15 million in Series A funding led by GV (Google Ventures). The company is expected to unveil another investor later today, at least that’s what the tweets from Nothing’s official Twitter handle suggests.
