Bharti Airtel Buys Warburg Pincus’ 20% Stake in Bharti Telemedia as it Aims for ‘One Home’ Strategy

Telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, is shifting its focus on digital as it acquires Warburg Pincus affiliate's 20% equity share in its DTH arm Bharti Telemedia. The total valuation of this purchase is Rs 31,260 million (Rs 3,126 crore). In a press statement, Bharti Airtel said the total valuation would be discharged primarily via issuance of around Rs 36.47 million equity shares of Airtel at a price of Rs 600 per share and up to Rs 10,378 million will be paid as cash. This new deal is part of Airtel’ strategy of aligning the shareholding of all customer-facing businesses. Last week, it was reported that Airtel’s Board would meet on February 17 to discuss the entire business revamp. As the meeting concludes, the telco sends out a press note regarding this purchase.

Bharti Airtel Aims at ‘One Home’ Strategy

Airtel also said that the issuance of shares proposed through preferential allotment is subject to shareholders' approval. As noted, Bharti Airtel has made this move to align the shareholding of its customer-facing products, services and businesses under the same holding group. The full control and ownership over Bharti Telemedia will allow Airtel to provide differentiated and converged solutions to customers, and it will also allow the telco to promote "One Home" strategy.

Furthermore, Airtel said that it would issue its shares to the Warburg Pincus affiliate at a premium of around 0.50% to the floor price determined as per ICDR regulations. The remaining amount of around Rs 9,378 million will be paid in cash at the time of closing the proposing transaction. Also, there might also be minor customary closing adjustments which will not exceed Rs 1,000 million.

Citigroup Global Markets India Private Limited (Citi) acted as the financial advisor to Airtel and Credit Suisse Securities (India) Private Limited acted as advisors to Warburg Pincus in connection with this transaction.

To recall, in December 2017, a Warburg Pincus affiliate, agreed to acquire 20% equity stake in Bharti Telemedia Limited, the DTH arm of Airtel. Airtel Digital TV is currently the third-largest DTH operator in India sitting behind Tata Sky and Dish TV.

5G Trial Applications Likely to be Cleared in Coming Two Weeks

5g-trial-applications-likely-to-be-cleared

As pointed out by the parliamentary panel on IT, 5G trials in India haven't initiated because of the delays and inefficiency of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). But according to a report from ET Telecom, the 5G trial applications submitted by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are likely to be approved in the coming two weeks. The questions asked by the parliamentary panel on IT has certainly pushed DoT to move faster and avail the airwaves in the appropriate spectrum band to the telcos for initiating 5G trials.

Discussions With Telcos for 5G Trials in Place

The report said that the DoT secretary's office in addition to other officials is currently in talks with the operators to conduct 5G trials. Last year, 16 applications were submitted to the DoT for conducting 5G trials in the country both using imported and homegrown technology.

But the trials didn't take place because of DoT's inefficiency in getting on with 5G business. The parliamentary panel expressed its disappointment by noting that what has happened is in contradiction to what DoT had told the committee during the examination of Demands for Grants in February 2020.

The panel asked DoT why the 5G trials haven't initiated yet where there were clearly no issues. To this, DoT informed the committee that it plans to start 5G trials in the country in next two to three months using both imported as well as indigenous technology.

Jio and Airtel have said that their networks are 5G ready and are just waiting for the government’s nod to start with the 5G trials. Airtel recently even tested 5G on the airwaves in the 1800 MHz band in Hyderabad and found impeccable results.

Mukesh Ambani had said that Jio plans to launch 5G commercially in India during the second half of 2021. However, the upcoming spectrum auctions don't list the 5G spectrum (3300-3600 MHz bands); thus there is no clarity on how much time it will actually take for 5G to arrive in India.

Asus ROG series might get another addition, namely 'ROG Phone 5' later this year. The device is expected to support 65W fast-charging and come with up to 16GB of RAM. For the unaware, Asus ROG Phone is a mobile-gaming dedicated series which has seen a lot of traction in the last few years. The last device which Asus released in the series in India was Asus ROG Phone 3 for a price of Rs 49,999 (base model). Now, Asus might directly release the Asus ROG Phone 5 — more details on the story ahead.

Asus ROG Phone 5 Specifications (Expected)

The Asus ROG Phone 5 is expected to launch soon according to a well known-tipster Mukul Sharma. He said that if there are no changes made to the device now, it will make its way to India in March 2021.

Looking at the recent Geekbench appearance, it can be further assumed that the device might actually launch soon in the country. The device is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 888 SoC coupled with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Some renders of the device leaked online suggest that it will come with a triple camera setup at the rear all in a horizontal alignment. The device might come with a dedicated button to activate 'Gaming Mode'.

Some rumours online suggest that ROG Phone 5 might get a programmable LED screen at the rear, but it seems a little far-fetched at the moment to us. According to the Digital Chat Station, the device might pack a 6,000mAh battery and support 65W fast-charging as well.

It will be worth to see if Asus launches a little toned-down version of the device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 and availing it as a more 'budget-friendly’ option in the series. Also, it will be interesting to see the price range that Asus decides to go for with the ROG Phone 5.

Smart speaker shipments saw a record rise in 2020. During the year, smart speaker shipments crossed the 10 lakh units mark which is a first for the Indian market. Total sales generated from the smart speaker segment in India in 2020 was Rs 463.4 crore ($63.6 million). According to a report from IANS, Amazon emerged as the largest smart speaker brand in India both in terms of value and volume market shares. It is quite obvious since Amazon's Echo Dot and Echo Dot Mini and other Alexa smart speakers are very popular in India.

Amazon if Followed by Xiaomi at the Second Spot, Apple Gets a Decent Start

Amazon had 80% market share both in terms of value and volume market share. Google came in the second position with 11% market share in terms of volume. However, in terms of value, Xiaomi stood at the second spot in India with 10% market share and in terms of volume came at third with 8% market share.

Apple saw a decent response to its newly launched HomePod mini smart speakers which started selling during the last quarter of 2020. With just a quarter's worth of selling, Apple managed to gain 2% market share overall. Out of all the sales that Apple made in the smart speakers segment, around 84% of devices were HomePod mini.

Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, techARC said that more players are expected to enter the market in the smart speakers’ segment in the next two years. In 2020, approximately 40% of the smart speakers were shipped during the festive quarter (Q4) alone.

In the top five rankings for the best-selling smart speakers in India, Amazon Echo devices managed to get the number 1, 2, and 5 positions. Google's smart speaker got the third position while Xiaomi's smart speaker got the fifth.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi shipped more than 75,000 units in its first year of entry into the category.

Vodafone Idea Subscriber Losses Continues But At Reduced Pace

vodafone-idea-subscriber-losses-at-reduced-pace
Vodafone Idea, the third largest wireless operator in India continues to witness subscriber losses but at a reduced pace, Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report on Monday. The Indian diversified financial services firm said that the operator lost a "mere" two million subscribers in the third quarter of the current financial year. Motilal Oswal said that the active subscriber base of Vodafone Idea "continued to decline, but at a slower pace" as the operator lost 4.6 million active subscribers in its third quarter. In the previous quarter, Vodafone Idea subscriber base declined by 8.1 million while its active subscriber base declined by 11.8 million.

Vodafone Idea Remains Weakest Telecom Operator Says Analyst

Vodafone Idea on Saturday reported its third quarter financial results registering an 1% increase in its revenues to Rs 10890 crores. The third largest wireless operator in India reported a net loss of Rs 4532 crore in its third quarter as compared to Rs 6438 crore in the previous year quarter. Vodafone Idea highlighted that it has 269.8 million subscribers as of December 31, 2020, with its active subscriber base declining to 256.6 million. The operator also said that the average revenue per user (ARPU) in its third quarter of the current financial year hit Rs 121 as compared to Rs 119 in the previous quarter.

ICICI Direct, a financial product distributor said that the churn rate has reduced to 2.3% in the third quarter with the firm believing that it is "due to network integration completion." In its report on Tuesday, ICICI Direct said that the capital expenditure at Rs 970 crore was "underwhelming, given the balance sheet stress."

"VIL (Vodafone Idea) remains the weakest private telco," ICICI Direct said in a report on Tuesday. "While AGR dues payment extension was a short-term breather, its survival hinges on quick capital infusion and tariff hike/floor tariff implementation."

The Supreme Court in early September 2020, provided a 10-year timeframe for the telecom operators to pay their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. Vodafone Idea on Saturday highlighted that the next instalment would be payable only by March 31, 2022.

Meanwhile, Ravinder Takkar, CEO of Vodafone Idea in the third quarter earnings call on Monday said that the operator will not wait for others to increase the tariffs.

"We believe that we are in the best position as the company to raise prices and increase tariffs with how much we need, we will take those steps and actions," Takkar said in the earnings call on Monday.

Vodafone Idea Requires 70% Increase in ARPU

In September, Vodafone Idea unveiled its new brand Vi by unifying its two brands with the operator also announcing that it has completed the "world's largest integration." The operator on Saturday released its quarterly report with Vodafone Idea highlighting that it has added 12,000 4G sites "primarily through refarming" of its 2G and 3G spectrum to "expand" its 4G capacity.

"We continue to expand our LTE 900 in select locations, including through dynamic spectrum refarming, to improve customer experience," Vodafone Idea said in its quarterly report.

However, Motilal Oswal said that Vodafone Idea witnessed a "mere" 13% improvement in its ARPU between the second quarter of the previous financial year to the third quarter of the current financial year. In the same period, the financial services firm highlighted the telecom industry witnessed a 25% increase in the ARPU. Motilal Oswal said that the "ARPU increase translated into limited revenue" benefit as the operator witnessed a "huge subscriber churn owing to its low network investments."

"However, the churn has reduced significantly," Motilal Oswal said in its report on Monday. "VIL's weak liquidity position restricts its capability to invest in network improvement, evident from reducing capex intensity."

Crucially, Motilal Oswal said that the operator requires an 70% increase in its ARPU in the upcoming quarters to "fulfill its interest obligations, capex, AGR liabilities, and spectrum liabilities in FY23." The financial services firm said that the 70% increase in ARPU is based on its "workings" under the condition that the operator doesn't witness further subscriber churn.

"The significant amount of cash required to service its debt, leaves limited upside opportunity for equity holders, despite the high operating leverage opportunity from any source of ARPU increase," Motilal Oswal said.

Vodafone Idea board had earlier approved fund raising of up to Rs 25,000 crores with the operator on Saturday highlighting that it is in "active discussions with potential investors."

"The need for capitalisation is of paramount importance mainly due to its lagging spends on network and relative market share loss," ICICI Direct said.

Twitter Testing Voice DMs in India Amongst Other Countries

Voice DMs capped at 140 seconds

World's biggest micro-blogging platform, Twitter is testing the 'voice DMs' feature in India, Brazil, and Japan. The Voice DMs (direct messages) feature will be rolled out in a phased manner for the users across the country. It means that some users will get it before others through which Twitter will test how the feature is performing. If it performs well, the company will roll it out for more users. The feature has started rolling out from today, i.e., February 17, 2021, and will allow users to send voice messages to others through Twitter DMs.

Voice DMs On Twitter Capped at 140 Seconds

The company has capped the length of voice DMs just like it capped the length of voice tweets. Any user can record a voice DM of a maximum of 140 seconds (2.20 minutes). The feature will be rolled out for both Android and iOS users.

Sending a voice DM on Twitter would be a very simple and straightforward thing. The user can slide into the DMs section of the app and choose the contact he/she wants to communicate with and tap on the 'voice recording' icon for recording their message. Tapping it for the second time would complete the recording process.

Users will also have the option of hearing the voice message they have recorded before sending it to the other accounts. As for the iOS users, recording a voice DM would be a little different in the process. iOS users will have to press and hold for recording the message.

Twitter has confirmed that users can hear the voice messages through their web browser; however, can't send or record one since it is only rolled out for Android and iOS devices.

It was in last June that Twitter had introduced the voice tweets feature for users which allowed them to send out voice notes without the need for accompanying text. This feature would certainly increase user satisfaction since voice messages have become common across every big social media platform.

Apple iPhone 13 Might Feature ProMotion Display Technology

apple-iphone-13-promotion-display

Apple's most anticipated product of 2021, iPhone 13 is expected to launch later in the year. The premium smartphone is expected to feature the ProMotion display technology that none of the other iPhones do. So what is so cool about this technology, and what is it exactly? The answer to this question might already be known to several iPad Pro users. For the unaware, the iPad Pro is the only other device from Apple that features the ProMotion display technology. Keep reading ahead to find out what it is and how it will change the way users interact with an iPhone's display.

iPhone 13 With ProMotion Display, How Will it Look like?

According to a report from Gizmochina, the Apple iPhone 13 might feature the ProMotion display. In simple words, the device might come with support for higher refresh rates. The iPhone 12 series was expected to support 120Hz refresh rate, but while that didn't happen, the iPhone 13 series has a strong chance of getting it.

The ProMotion display technology is expected to intelligently adjust the refresh rate on the screen depending on the type of content being played. This new technology may equip iPhone 13 to go up to two, three, and even four times the native refresh rate. Thus, you might see the iPhone 13 supporting 120Hz, 180Hz, and 240Hz refresh rate.

As per the report, Apple has already filed the patent for the new iPhone display supporting variable refresh rate. iPad Pro supports ProMotion display where users can notice the refresh rate of the device switching to 120Hz at times.

However, one concern with such a high refresh rate iPhone can be the dull battery life. iPhones aren't seen as the best when it comes to long battery life, and that is when the device only supports up to 60Hz refresh rate. Double, triple, or quadruple that and it just might be a battery life disaster for Apple and its users.

However, Apple is expected to sort it out, and a higher refresh rate than 60Hz would certainly be a refreshing thing to see in an iPhone.

Telcos Call for the Regulation of OTT Communication Apps

telcos-regulation-ott-communication-apps

Telecom operators have asked for the regulation of the over-the-top (OTT) communication apps. Citing the recent WhatsApp privacy policy changes as an example, the telcos have argued that OTT apps don't have any obligation to protect its customers’ privacy. This means these apps need to be regulated just the way licence norms regulate telcos. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has asked the telecom secretary of India, Anshu Prakash to level the playing field for the telcos if the OTT apps are not going to be regulated meaning a request for relaxing the regulatory obligations for the operators.

Telcos Need to Follow Strict Privacy Guidelines, Whereas OTT Apps Don't

According to a report from the ET Telecom, COAI said that the telcos have to follow strict privacy guidelines for ensuring the protection of its users’ privacy, whereas, OTT apps don't have to do that. COAI took WhatsApp as an example and highlighted how it changed the privacy policy for the users putting them in a tough spot by sharing their data with other companies.

The telecom body also highlighted the difference in security parameters that both the players have to follow. For telcos, a huge cost is involved in setting up a Lawful Interception and Monitoring (LIM) system to help agencies track all the malicious messages and calls, while OTT players have no such obligation.

COAI said that OTT players aren't even providing encryption keys to the security agencies and on top of that, all their data centres are outside of India. The argument put forth is to level the playing field for both the telcos and the OTT communication apps such as WhatsApp. Either regulate the OTT players or relax the obligations of the telcos in the same regard.

It will be interesting to see what response comes from the government to this request from the telecom body.

Moto G series gets a new member in the form of Moto G30. Last year, Motorola launched the ‘Moto G’ series of phones in several markets and it is weird to see the company jumping directly to Moto G30 skipping all the numerals in between. Nevertheless, we are here with the Moto G30- a budget smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset. The phone was unveiled alongside Moto G10 which is a direct successor to the Moto G9 that was launched last year. Other key specifications of the Moto G30 include a 5000mAh battery, HD+ display with 90Hz refresh rate, up to 6GB of RAM and 64MP quad-camera setup on the rear. Motorola will be launching the E7 Power smartphone in India on February 19, and the Moto G30 and Moto G10 India launch will likely follow.

It has a microSD card slot as well for storage expansion up to 512GB.

The phone has a fingerprint scanner on the back and it weighs 197 grams. Motorola has added a 5000mAh battery to fuel the device. The smartphone supports up to 15W fast charging, but Motorola is bundling a 20W charger inside the retail box. The phone boots Android 11 out of the box.

Moto G30: Pricing and Expected India Launch

Motorola has launched the smartphone in Dark Pearl and Pastel Sky colour options. The phone will retail for €180 (approx. Rs 15,900) in Europe. In the UK, the Moto G30 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is listed for £159.99 (approx. Rs 16,200). Motorola is expected to launch the Moto G30 in India very soon for under Rs 15,000.

Atria Convergence Technologies Limited aka ACT Fibernet continues its revision spree. After revising the broadband plans in multiple cities like Chennai, New Delhi and Hyderabad, the country’s fourth-largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) has made some changes to its broadband plans in Bengaluru city. A total of ten broadband plans are being offered by ACT Fibernet right now in Bengaluru, and they come with up to 5.5TB or 5,500GB FUP limit. Do make a note that ACT Fibernet did not revise all the plans in the city. Instead, the company has made changes to the popular plans, especially to the ones priced below Rs 2,000. ACT Fibernet’s broadband plans in Bengaluru start at Rs 710, and they go all the way up to Rs 5,999.

Revised ACT Fibernet Broadband Plans in Bengaluru Detailed

The ACT Swift broadband plan is the basic offering from ACT Fibernet in Bengaluru. It costs Rs 710 and offers a decent 500GB of data every month at 50 Mbps speeds. Earlier, the same plan offered just 250GB of data, but the benefit is doubled now.

The ACT Rapid Plus plan is second on the list with 75 Mbps speeds, 750GB of data per month and a monthly rental of Rs 985. Do make a note that the priced mentioned in this article are excluding taxes, so an additional 18% GST will be levied on the final price.

Then there’s the ‘Most Popular’ ACT Blaze offering with 1000GB/1TB FUP limit, Rs 1,085 monthly rental, 150 Mbps speeds and after FUP speeds of 1 Mbps. Do make a note that ACT Fibernet does not have a 100 Mbps broadband plan in Bengaluru which is surprising.

Plan Monthly Price FUP Limit Speeds After FUP Speeds
ACT Swift Rs 710 500GB 50 Mbps 512 Kbps
ACT Rapid Plus Rs 985 750GB 75 Mbps 512 Kbps
ACT Blaze Rs 1,085 1000GB 150 Mbps 1 Mbps

ACT Advance Rs 3,999 4000GB 300 Mbps 2 Mbps
ACT Progress Rs 4,999 4500GB 300 Mbps 2 Mbps
ACT GIGA Rs 5,999 5500GB 1000 Mbps 5 Mbps

The ACT Storm plan is next on the line with 200 Mbps speeds, 2500GB or 2.5TB FUP limit and costs Rs 1,185 per month.

The ACT Lightning and ACT Incredible plans priced at Rs 1,425 and Rs 1,999 are the highlights of this revision because they now offer 3.3TB FUP limit per month. Speeds offered by the plans are 250 Mbps and 300 Mbps, respectively.

The ACT Essential and ACT Advance broadband plans offer the same 300 Mbps speeds, but they have different FUP limit of 3500GB and 4000GB. The monthly price of ACT Essential plan is Rs 2,999, whereas the same for ACT Advance plan is Rs 3,999. There’s also the ACT Progress plan that also offers 300 Mbps speeds and 4500GB FUP limit at Rs 4,999.

Last on the list is the ACT GIGA plan priced at Rs 5,999 with 1 Gbps speeds and 5.5TB FUP limit.
