| Airtel Digital TV Well Placed, DTH Industry Outlook May Have Weakened Says Analyst Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:12 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-well-placed-dth-industry-outlook-weakened/336711/, Airtel Digital TV Well Placed, DTH Industry Outlook May Have Weakened Says Analyst
Bharti Airtel Now Completely Owns DTH BusinessAirtel in a release on Wednesday said that the transaction is worth Rs 3126 crore with the company issuing around 365 crore shares on a preferential basis to Warburg Pincus. The telecom operator said that it will also pay up to Rs 1037.8 crore in cash as part of the transaction. It was also said that the shares issued to Warburg Pincus are at a price of Rs 600 per share. "DTH is an integral part of our Homes strategy and this transaction is another step towards simplifying the shareholding of our customer facing businesses providing structural flexibility and ease of implementation," Harjeet Kohli, group director at Bharti Enterprises, said in the release on Wednesday. Motilal Oswal highlighted that Airtel now completely owns its entire DTH business and that the "transaction is at 28% premium to its previous sale." "This is equivalent to a loan at 8.5% interest, which we believe is not an expensive trade," Motilal Oswal said in its report on Wednesday. It has to be noted that in December 2017, a Warburg Pincus affiliate purchased 20% equity stake in Bharti Telemedia for Rs 2450 crores. Multiple analysts including the Jefferies Group said that the Wednesday’s announcement provides an attractive exit for Warburg Pincus in just over two years. "But with the risk of a digital disruption, the outlook for the DTH industry and valuations may have only weakened in the last three years in contrast of a cumulative 28% return for Warburg Pincus," Motilal Oswal said. Bharti Airtel Set to Accelerate 'One Home' StrategyIn its report, Motilal Oswal also highlighted that Airtel Digital TV clocked in 17.8% growth in revenues between 2017 to 2020 financial year as compared to the 30% growth rate registered by Dish TV. However, the financial services firm said that Airtel is likely to register an 5.8% earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) growth in the current financial year. Motilal Oswal said that Dish TV in comparison is likely to register flat EBITDA in the current financial year. According to the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators report released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in late January, Airtel Digital TV registered 24.59% market share as on September 30, 2020. In the same period, the Trai report highlights that Dish TV India registered a 27% market share while Tata Sky led with an 32.58% market share. "The management plans to realign all customer-facing businesses under the same holding group," Motilal Oswal said. "This [transaction] will allow it to offer differentiated and converged solutions to customers under its 'One Home' strategy." Crucially, Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel in the third quarter earnings call said that the DTH industry is "attractive in the medium to long term" due to multiple reasons including the price structure in India. "In India, you can get for about $4 to $5 pretty much 200 channels per month,” Vittal said in the earnings call in early February. “So the cost of actually having this linear entertainment in the home is pretty cheap in India. That’s one factor. The second factor is that if you look at the DTH industry, it’s a tiny fraction of the total industry that consumes or a total set of customers that consumes linear entertainment." Vittal also said that "there's still a very large and fragmented cable play that operates in India" and that the users face "poorer experience, poorer quality of response" with a cable connection. "The price structure is such that it’s a small amount to pay to get channels that you may still want to consume along with streaming services," Vittal said. "And finally, streaming is still a niche industry in India, given that the cost structure of streaming is contingent on more broadband penetration as also then the payment for the content." Airtel on Wednesday said that it has created a "special committee of directors" to reorganize its "various subsidiaries to achieve required flexibility" with a focus on digital and non-telecom businesses. "The exit, we believe, is to restructure and seek investment in non-telecom and digital entity, separately, post restructuring," ICICI Direct said in a report on Thursday. |

| Android 12 First Developer Preview Rolled Out by Google, Details Posted: 19 Feb 2021 01:12 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/android-12-developer-preview-google/336674/, Android 12 First Developer Preview Rolled Out by Google, Details
Google has just rolled out the first developer preview for Android 12, and it introduces several changes and improvements over the previous Android version (Android 11). It is worth noting that it is a 'Developers Preview', meant to be downloaded by developers and test their applications on it. It is not an actual over-the-air (OTA) update for an average user; that will arrive only in the second half of this year. Android 12 Developer Preview 1 FeaturesThere are three areas where Android 12 has come with enhancements- a) Trust and Safety, b) User Experience Tools, and c) App Compatibility. A) Trust and Safety
Talking about the first, 'Trust and Safety', the Android 12 comes with 'modern SameSite cookie behaviours in WebView', which means users will get additional security and privacy, allowing them to have more control over how cookies are used across different websites.
To get the developers to shift to privacy-protecting resettable identifiers, Google has adopted a multi-release effort for easing migration of device-scoped Netlink MAC. In Android 12, the restriction to device-scoped Netlink MAC is being applied for all the apps regardless of the targetSDK level, which was not the case with Android 11.
Google is making exporting components from apps a safer experience by changing the default handling of the 'android;exported' attribute for the Android 12. It is further asking developers to inspect their components so that there are no installation errors because of the change.
To make the handling of PendingIntents safer, Google has asked all the apps to clearly declare a 'mutability flag' in Android 12. For each PendingIntent, apps should show 'FLAG_MUTABLE' or 'FLAG_IMMUTABLE'. B) User Experience Tools
With Android 12, camera apps which do not support capturing in HEVC format, the platform will automatically convert its files into H.264/AVC format that sees a wider acceptance/compatibility. But this transcoding process will take a bit of time depending on the quality of the video and the hardware of the device. Google has recommended to developers that their apps should support HEVC format, but if it doesn't, then the developers must declare it and enable compatible media transcoding.
To allow compression of the higher quality image, Google is introducing support for AV1 Image File Format in the Android 12. For the unaware, AVIF is a container format for sequences of images and images encoded with AV1. Google is going to block foreground service starts for all the apps targeting to be a part of Android 12 to optimise the user experience. Because when they are overused, it can kill or crash the apps.
Google is introducing a new unified API for all the apps to let it accept different types of content from several sources such as a keyboard, clipboard, and even drag or drop.
This feature will allow the developers to create a more immersive audio and game experience for the users, further enhancing the overall experience in interacting with the applications.
The audio-mixers, effects, and resamplers have been optimised for up to 24 channels for Android 12, which is 8 in Android 11, so clearly, there will be a huge difference in the audio quality noticed by the users.
Whenever in full-screen or immersive app experiences, with Android 12, users will be able to navigate through their smartphones through a single default 'swipe'. The operating system (OS) will come with accidental gesture protection, as well.
Notifications with Android 12 will become easier to interact with, modern, and functional. Google has said that there are changes made in the templates directly.
Google has asked the developers to trigger the activity 'start' as soon as the notification is tapped on without any delay.
For the Android 12, Google has reduced the system variability by optimising the workload distribution and latency that has resulted in a reduction of median experience for 99% of use cases. Google said that this has helped in improving the performance 2x on Binder calls overall. C) App Compatibility
Google is shifting ART to a Project Mainline module for improving correctness and runtime performance and further managing memory core in a better manner.
Google is also rolling out the Android 12 for the Android TV platform to allow users to get the latest Android features on their Smart TVs as well.
Google is not allowing additional non-SDK interfaces in Android 12.
Through ADB or Developer Options, Google is enabling an easier and faster way for the developers to debug and test their apps.
Google is expecting to reach Platform Stability Milestone for Android 12 by August 2021. |

| Bharti Airtel Leading the Industry: Motilal Oswal Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:18 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bharti-airtel-leading-the-industry/336646/, Bharti Airtel Leading the Industry: Motilal Oswal
The industry kept adding new subscribers at a steady pace last year even though Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) kept losing subscribers. This was due to the steady growth of Jio's and Airtel's subscribers base. According to a report from Motilal Oswal dissecting the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) report, the subscriber base for the whole industry was just 1.4% lesser (December 2020) that what it used to be in pre-COVID era at 989.1 million in March 2020. The gross subscribers for the industry fell by 1.4 million MoM (after adding 14.5m over Jul-Nov 2020) to 1.15 billion in December 2020. The loss was partially offset by the growth of Jio and Airtel. The report says that active subscribers base for the industry grew by 7 million in December 2020 to 975 million. Bharti Airtel Gains the Most Active Subscriber Market ShareBharti Airtel added 4.1 million/5.5 million gross/active subscribers at 339 million/329 million in December 2020. This helped the company regain its top position in terms of active subscriber market share (SMS) gained since Jio only gained 0.5 million 4G subscribers giving Airtel 94% incremental SMS. Reliance Jio, on the other hand, saw a very slowed monthly gross/4G subscriber additions of 0.5 million in December 2020 at 409 million subscribers. But the telco's active subscriber additions were better than this figure at 3.2 million, but it was slower than November's 5.4 million. Jio still had 35.4% SMS, but Airtel is closing in despite having much less number of gross subscribers. The pace of gross and active subscribers loss for VIL continued, with the telco losing 5.7 million gross and 1.5 million active subscribers during December 2020 to 284 million/257 million. Oswal has marked this as a key red flag since the Q3 results of the telco suggested that the subscriber loss rate should decelerate in the coming months. 4G subscribers addition for the industry slowed down to 4.9 million at 724 million in December 2020. As for the wired broadband subscribers, the industry added 0.4 million new subscribers taking the total base to 22.9 million. |
| Bharti Airtel EMD Higher Than Expected, Telco May Buy More 2300 MHz Spectrum: ICICI Securities Posted: 18 Feb 2021 09:08 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/airtel-emd-higher-icici-securities/336640/, Bharti Airtel EMD Higher Than Expected, Telco May Buy More 2300 MHz Spectrum: ICICI Securities
As we reported a few hours ago, the DoT has disclosed the earnest money deposit (EMD) placed by each telecom operator for the spectrum auction 2021. For those who are unaware, EMD helps in understanding the maximum spectrum payout of a telecom operator. In general, the pre-qualified operators can buy spectrum worth 5-7x of EMD. ICICI Securities, in its report, said that the EMD of Bharti Airtel is higher than expected because the telecom operator has very less requirement of the spectrum when compared to Reliance Jio. Airtel has put EMD of Rs 3,000 crore, which means the maximum spectrum payout for Bharti is capped at Rs 150 crore to Rs 210 crore. Earlier, ICICI Securities predicted that Airtel might put an EMD of Rs 2,000 crore, but it has exceeded the limitations. Bharti Airtel May Buy More 2300 MHz SpectrumTelecom operators are required to deposit EMD which will enable them to bid for spectrum quantity in the upcoming auction. EMD also helps to understand operator spectrum requirement and likely maximum payout. This is also because of adequate spectrum supply which will ensure final spectrum prices will be equal to reserve prices. Therefore, spectrum demand multiplied by reserve price equals the final spectrum payout. ICICI Securities further predicts that Airtel may buy more of 2300 MHz spectrum. However, the telco is unlikely to fill the sub-GHz gap in this auction. Vodafone Idea has placed EMD of Rs 475 crore which means it can buy spectrum worth Rs 3,300 crore. Furthermore, ICICI Securities says that the sub-GHz spectrum gap in eight circles, of which spectrum availability in 900 MHz, is only in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. The telco will likely purchase 5 MHz spectrum in each of these two circles, but the remaining gap in six circles can be filled in future auctions. The country’ second-largest telco might also buy 1800 MHz spectrum to complete at least five carriers in each circle, including spectrum in 900 MHz and 2100 MHz band. “This will help Bharti in a smooth transition to 5G in future using dynamic spectrum sharing,” said ICICI Securities in the latest report. On the flip side, Vodafone Idea will have to renew 5 MHz spectrum in expiring 900 MHz band in Tamil Nadu. Besides, it will also need 5 MHz spectrum in 1800 MHz band each in Andhra Pradesh and UP East circles. |
| DoT Reveals List of Pre-Qualified Bidders Along With EMD for Upcoming Spectrum Auction Posted: 18 Feb 2021 07:46 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/dot-pre-qualified-bidders-spectrum-auction/336616/, DoT Reveals List of Pre-Qualified Bidders Along With EMD for Upcoming Spectrum Auction
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released a press note revealing the pre-qualified bidders and their earnest money deposit (EMD) for the upcoming spectrum auction. India is having a spectrum auction after more than three years, but sadly, this auction will not have 5G airwaves. In the spectrum auction 2021, the DoT is auctioning 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHZ & 2500 MHz bands. The new press release confirms Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea as the pre-qualified bidders. Out of the three telcos, Jio has put in an EMD of Rs 10,000 crore, while Vodafone Idea deposited just Rs 475 crore. Jio Shows Clear Intentions of Grabbing More SpectrumAs everyone expected, Reliance Jio will be renewing/purchasing more license in the upcoming auction. The three telcos have paid Rs 1,00,000 towards application fee for participating in the auction. Since Jio has put an EMD of Rs 10,000 crore, the DoT has allocated ‘Eligibility Points’ of 73,007. Bharti Airtel’s Rs 3,000 crore EMD means the telco has been allocated with 24,924 eligibility points. Lastly, Vi is last on the list with just 6,153 eligibility points due to its Rs 475 crore EMD. The three telcos can bid in any band in any telecom service area, subject to the availability of spectrum and other factors. Bharti Airtel’s net worth is Rs 71,303.10 crore and the same of Reliance Jio is Rs 1,79,617.00 crore. Vodafone Idea’s net worth stands at Rs (-) 43,474.70 crore. Reliance Jio is expected to bid for spectrum worth Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000 crore as the telco will be looking to renew its spectrum in several circles. Furthermore, by adding more spectrum, Jio will also be looking to meet the growing 4G data needs of the customers. Jio will be looking to acquire most of the spectrum in 800 MHz band. The spectrum auction will begin on March 1. After this 4G spectrum auction, the DoT might hold another auction for 5G airwaves. |
