macOS Big Sur 11.2 Update

macOS, Apple’s primary software OS for it’s Mac lineup has been through a  lot of change ever since it’s announcement back in 2001. The OS, which was the key reason for users to shift from Windows is quite feature-rich, having been developed and worked upon for over 20 years. It has gone through multiple update cycles and versions from High Sienna to Mojave to Big Sur, which is the current version. Today, the Cupertino based tech company announced the release of macOS Big Sur 11.2, bringing along with it a whole host of fixes.

For those of you wondering, the update comes approximately one-and-a-half months after the release of the last update,  macOS Big Sur 11.1 that came in December 2020 bringing with it support for Apple’s new flagship AirPods Max headphones.

The macOS Big Sur 11.2 update addresses a whole list of problems a few major ones being Bluetooth reliability and a fix for Apple’s iCloud Drive access and the Photos app.

What’s New in macOS 11.2

The official changelog for macOS 11.2 is given below.

macOS Big Sur 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:

  • External displays may show a black screen when connected to a Mac mini (M1, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter
  • Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save
  • iCloud Drive could turn off after disabling the iCloud Drive Desktop & Documents Folders option
  • System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password
  • Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

As one can see, the official changelog states that macOS Big Sur 11.2 improves the Bluetooth reliability so as to ensure reduced disconnections, an issue that has bothering Mac users for quite some time.

Additional fixes come to the external display issue, wherein it was reported that when an external display was being connected to Mac Mini (M1) via an HDMI to DVI converter, a black screen was being displayed. ProRAW edits that were remaining unsaved even after the user presses save is also an issue that has been tackled.

Furthermore, the latest update fixes a problem that was causing iCloud Drive to turn off after disabling the iCloud Drive Desktop and Documents Folders option. To add to all of this, the mac OS Big Sur 11.2  update also fixes the issue wherein System Preferences might not unlock when entering administration password in some cases. The Globe key that not displaying the Emoji and Symbols pane when pressed has also been fixed.

How to Update to macOS 11.2

Apple’s latest macOS update is available for the MacBook, the iMac, Mac Mini and any other Mac computers compatible with the original Big Sur update that was announced back in 2020.

Usually, the rollout and update process is simple and automatic in nature, but, if for some reason you prefer to not wait around for the same and wish to update as soon as possible there are some options.

You can update the software manually by going to System Preferences > Software Update after going into the Apple menu, present on the top-left corner of your computer screen. You can also find the update by visiting the About This Mac option from the Apple menu and clicking the Software Update button to download the latest update.

The discount rises to 30% for subscribers who have a bill with a due date of more than 3 years but less than 5 years. Defaulters can choose to clear their dues using the NEFT/RTGS online transfer to the dedicated bank account of BSNL Kolkata. They can also choose to pay by cash through any of the 20 physical bill collection centers of the telco in Kolkata.

This is a good scheme by BSNL Kolkata to motivate people for clearing their dues and get the cash-flow going up. But will it pay off or not, that only time will tell! For getting more details of the offer, users can call at 9433000666.

What do you think about this offer from BSNL? Do you think it is clever in any way from the telco's part? Let us know in the comments section below.

Mediatek Announces M80 Chip, With an Emphasis on 5G

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/mediatek-m80-chip-emphasis-on-5g/332552/, Mediatek Announces M80 Chip, With an Emphasis on 5G

mediatek-m80-chip-emphasis-on-5g

Renowned Taiwanese chip manufacturer MediaTek Inc on Tuesday released a new 5G focused modem, which marks a very significant moment for the chipmaker since this is the first modem from the company to come with support for mmWave based 5G, something that its main competitor, Qualcomm already achieved.

For those of you in the dark, alongside Qualcomm Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd., Mediatek Inc is one of the handful suppliers of modem chips that aid devices such as smartphones to connect to cellular data networks. The company’s key customers include LG Electronics Ltd, Xiaomi Corp and more. With today’s launch, the company expects to see some growth in terms of sales, as it will finally be able to cater to customers in search of mmWave 5G based modems.

Till today, however, MediaTek’s 5G chips had been compatible with the “sub-6” variant of 5G, which is the variety being widely used in countries such as China. The sub-6 waves can give good speeds but, for the massive difference in terms of generation to generation, mmWave leads the charge.

Mediatek M80 5G Modem Specifications

Like the M80’s predecessor, the Helio M70, the M80 is an integrated modem, meaning that it will exist side-by-side alongside other components like the CPU, GPU and ISP. What sets these two apart is the inclusion of mmWave 5G, since the Helio M70 was the company’s first 5G modem, but it lacked support for mmWave 5G bands.

The MediaTek M80 has support for both modes of 5G, ie non-standalone and standalone 5G, with maximum download and upload speeds (theoretical) of 7.67Gbps and 3.67Gbps respectively.

For some context, the M80’s direct competitor,  Qualcomm's Snapdragon X60 is capable of reaching 7.5Gbps download speeds and 3Gbps in terms of upload speeds, while Samsung's integrated 5G modem on the recently launched Exynos 2100 is capable of hitting 7.35Gbps in downlink and 3.67Gbps in the uplink.

Other important features of the M80 modem include carrier aggregation across both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G bands as well as support for Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). Dynamic Spectrum Sharing is a technology that allows carriers to operate 4G LTE and 5G simultaneously on the same network band, so as to reserve spectrum for either one of them.

The M80 comes with MediaTek's UltraSave Network Environment Detection and UltraSave Content Awareness technologies, which are capable of dynamically adjusting power and operating frequency based on network conditions.

When Will It Be Available?

The MediaTek M80 will be sampled to customers in late 2021, so one should not expect a commercial device with this new modem to launch anytime soon. Similarly, details about which MediaTek Soc the new modem will be paired with remain to be a mystery at this point of time.

POCO M3 with Stereo Speakers, Snapdragon 662 launched in India, Priced at Rs 10,999

Poco India today launched the Poco M3 for the Indian market. It is worth noting that the smartphone already launched for the global market in late 2020, but now it has finally arrived for Indians as well. The device made it to the headlines because of its unique design. After waiting for a long time, it is finally going to be available in the Indian market. For those of you wondering about the colour options available, the device is available in three unique colours, namely Cool Blue, Poco Yellow, and Power Black.

Poco M3 Specifications

The Poco M3 features a 6.53-inch FHD+  IPS LCD panel, which can touch a peak brightness of 400 nits. It also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. To the top, one can see a waterdrop style notch, which also features the 8MP selfie snapper capable of shooting up to 1080p videos.

As for the performance side of things, we get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset featuring four Kryo 260 Gold cores clocked at 2.0GHz, four Kryo Silver cores at 1.8GHz, and, in terms of gaming, an Adreno 610 GPU. In India, the device comes with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with the RAM being standard on both storage variants.

In terms of the battery, the smartphone is powered by a massive 6,000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. A welcome addition to the specs is the USB Type-C based charging, which is a good thing to see, especially on budget smartphones, which often come with dated Micro-USB ports.

Audio is where the Poco M3 stands out, since the device comes with both a 3.5mm headphone jack and, most importantly, a stereo speaker setup, setting the device apart in its segment.

When it comes to the camera, the POCO M3 gets a triple-camera array consisting of a 48MP primary sensor, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. Video recording capabilities max out at 1080p 30 FPS.  The smartphone runs Android 10 customised with MIUI 12 on top.

What Sets the Poco M3 Apart?

The Poco M3 is different from its competition in two key areas, design and sound. The design of the Poco M3 is, for lack of a better word, exquisite. The leather-like finish provides ample grip and sets the device apart from the pretty bland competition.

The colours add to the uniqueness, with options available for all kinds of users, for the youngster, Poco Yellow, for the office goer, Power Black and, for those who wish to slot in between the two, Coral Blue.

Add to this the stereo speakers which sound better and make the device ideal for content consumption, with the focus on a better display in comparison to the competition.

Pricing and Availability

The Poco M3 is available in two variants, 6GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB with the latter featuring the faster UFS 2.2 storage. The pricing for the same is set at Rs 10,999 for the 64GB variant and Rs 11,999 for the 128GB variant. Furthermore, if one owns an ICICI Card, they can get a discount of Rs 1,000 on both models, effectively reducing the cost for the user to Rs 10,000 and 11,000 respectively. The first sale for the Poco M3 will take place on Feb 9, at 12 Noon.

Family Postpaid Plan of Rs 999: Check What Airtel, Jio, BSNL and Vi are Offering

Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:38 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/top-telcos-family-plans-on-offer/332528/, Family Postpaid Plan of Rs 999: Check What Airtel, Jio, BSNL and Vi are Offering

With the entire family restricted to the premises of their home, internet usage is at an all-time high in India. Now, this is not a matter for you if you have a broadband connection, since it can easily be shared amongst members of the household. But, if you like countless others in India depend on a data restricted plan that is available to only one user, recharging three or four plans gets pretty costly.

Today, we have a solution to this exact problem, where you will be able to provide access to everyone in your house, minus the high price. The country’s top telcos, namely BSNL, Jio, Vodafone Idea and Airtel have the solution to your data woes. All of these telecom providers have Rs 999 packs that offer a certain amount of data that can be more than adequate for most, if not all families and, these plans also come bundled with family add-ons and, the most important aspect of content consumption in modern India, OTT platforms.

This effectively means that with one Rs 999 pack, users can cater to their entire family, without having to pay the additional costs of recharging each and every user’s personal plan. Here are the packs offered by Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL and what they offer to the user.

Bharti Airtel Rs 999 Plan

Bharti Airtel plan offers users unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day coupled with 150GB of 4G/3G data on a monthly basis, with data rollover of up to 200GB. The plan also comes bundled with a one-year subscription to Amazon Prime as well as a VIP subscription to Disney+Hotstar and the usual Airtel XStream subscription. The plan allows for four family add on connections, as in 3+1 add-on. Certain additional benefits to the plan consist of handset protection and unlimited calls for add-on connections. Do note that, once the consumption of the provided data is fully completed, value-based charging will be applied to the plan at 2 paise per MB.

Reliance Jio Rs 999 Plan

Jio’s competing plan for Rs 999 comes bundled with 200GB of data and unlimited calls and SMS. The users who opt for this plan can avail three additional SIM cards as part of this plan. In terms of the OTT bundles, the plan comes with complimentary subscriptions to all Jio apps and, users can pay an additional Rs 99 for an Amazon Prime subscription. The validity of the plan is dependent on the billing cycle.

Vodafone Idea Rs 999 Plan

Vi’s Rs 999 family plan is under an odd placebo, having been listed under “postpaid plans for family in UP East circle”. As for what the plan has to offer, one can get 200GB of data with support for up to 200GB of rollover data. The plan can be used by 5 individual connections, one primary and f0ur add ons. 100 SMS and unlimited calls are also present here. OTT benefits consist of a one-year subscription to Amazon Prime, ZEE5 Premium and a subscription to Vi movies and TV.

This might not be available everywhere, so, as an alternate one can opt for the Rs 1,099 plan with unlimited data and a subscription to Netflix but, as a caveat, this is applicable only for a single connection.

BSNL Rs 999 Plan

The final plan of this article, BSNL’s Rs 999 family plan consists of 75GB high-speed data with a data rollover of up to 225GB. Once the data limit (75GB) is breached, users will be charged an additional Rs 10.24 per GB. The plan also comes with 100 SMS per day, with Mumbai and Delhi in the MTNL network included. As for the number of SIMs available, users can get three additional connections, with unlimited voice, 75GB of data and 100 SMS per day with each separate connection.  The unlimited voice calling facility comes has a limit of 250 minutes per day after which the customer will be charged at base plan tariffs.

Do note, this is the only plan in this list to exclude any kind of OTT platform-based subscription, which is less than ideal, considering their importance in today’s entertainment.

Apple Releases iOS 14.5 Beta With Support for Face Unlock When Wearing Masks

Apple, the Cupertino based tech company on Tuesday announced the rollout of the first beta for iOS 14.5. This comes shortly after the public rollout of iOS 14.4. Whilst the update brings with it multiple fixes and changes that will impact the user’s experience when it comes to iOS, the one new feature that stands out in the form of the ability of face unlock functioning when wearing a face mask. This however does come with some peculiar necessities.

How Does Face Unlock with Masks On Work?

The Face Unlock feature, which undoubtedly will excite fans of Face ID, since they will now be able to use the feature when wearing a mask, which has become a sort of the norm in the current world scenario. ‘

This, however, features some caveats, wherein this new update can function only if the iPhone’s user is wearing an Apple Watch. If the Apple Watch is unlocked, one needs to look into their iPhone, following which a haptic buzz on your wrist notifies the user of the success of the authentication.

This feature needs to be manually enabled before use, which allows Face ID to proceed, despite a lower accuracy rate, since the Apple Watch, which is a key part of the security in this instance is already authenticated.

To add to all the quirks, Apple has said that face unlock while wearing a mask will not function in instances such as making purchases and other important tasks.

For those of you unaware, considering the pandemic and its long term implications, Apple attempted to address this issue back in May with an update that prompted Face ID to quickly shift users to their passcode input screen when their faces are obscured.

This update was expected to be quite helpful but as was seen quickly after its announcement, the change wasn't particularly elegant by any means.

The update also consists of new privacy and a whole list of new updates. iOS 14.5 Beta 1 features the build number of 18E5140j. If you are wondering as to how you, as a developer can update to iOS 14.5, one simply has to open the Settings app, choose the General option, then choose Software Update.

What are Some Other Changes Part of the iOS 14.5 Beta Build?

Some key changes apart from the new mode of face unlock consist of the following.

  • A new and revised interface for the Apple Watch app and Settings app when your device is up to date
  • Minor tweaks in relation to the user interface for the Apple Podcasts application
  • The Apple News app has also seen notable design changes, including a redesigned News+ tab as well as an all-new Search tab at the bottom
  •  iOS 14.5 also brings support to iPads and iPhones for both current-gen console controllers, namely the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5 controllers
  • Expanded compatibility for Apple’s new Apple Fitness+ workouts
  • App Tracking controls
  •  Hey, Siri, call emergency support
  •  5G global dual-SIM support

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is actively losing wired broadband customers in the country. At the same time, the government-led telco’s wireless subscriber base isn’t growing at a rapid pace like Bharti Airtel. To lure the subscribers, BSNL has introduced a new ‘Cinema Plus’ service that bundles OTT subscriptions into a single package. A couple of weeks ago, we reported the same news as OTT add-on packs, however, back then the name of the service was not revealed. Now, BSNL has made an official announcement and these add-on packs for BSNL Broadband users will be available as ‘Cinema Plus‘ packs. The BSNL Cinema Plus is basically ‘YuppTV Scope Entertainment’ service with a rebadged name and completely owned by YuppTV. At the moment, there’s only Cinema Plus pack available to existing BSNL Broadband users priced at just Rs 129 per month.

BSNL Cinema Plus Entertainment Pack at Rs 129: Benefits Detailed

The BSNL Cinema Plus is currently available in only one pack dubbed as ‘Entertainment.’ The plan was also available as YuppTV Scope Entertainment Pack. It costs Rs 129 and bundles four OTT subscriptions- YuppTV, ZEE5, SonyLIV and Voot. YuppTV Scope/BSNL Cinema Plus is a one-stop destination that bundles OTT subscriptions in a single place. The price of the lone plan is Rs 199, but users can avail it for Rs 129 as a promotional offer.

Delving deep into the OTT subscriptions offered by YuppTV Scope Entertainment pack, we get YuppTV subscription with more than 100 Live TV channels, and ZEE5 subscription with more than 80 Live TV channels, 500+ TV series, original TV shows and over 2000 movies in various languages. There’s SonyLIV subscription bundled as well with 15+ Live TV channels and 200+ movies. Lastly, users also get Voot subscription at no extra cost which allows customers to watch Live TV from ore than 35 channels and it also has over 400 movies.

This is a unique offering from YuppTV in the first place, and at the same time, a much-required partnership for BSNL in the current scenario. The service is only available to existing BSNL Broadband customers. We tried to purchase the BSNL Cinema Plus/YuppTV Entertainment Scope plan using a BSNL wireless number and other telecom operators’ mobile number and was unsuccessful. Every time we tried to purchase the plan without BSNL Broadband details, it returned the error- “Kindly contact customer care, as record is not present in CWSC.” For the unaware, CWSC is BSNL’s Centralised Web Selfcare Portal

After subscribing to the BSNL Cinema Plus pack, users will be required to download the YuppTV Scope application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to watch the content for free. The best part is the YuppTV Scope app is also available on Android TV and Amazon FireTV platforms.
