dot-confiscates-70-illegal-signal-repeaters

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has confiscated 70 signal repeaters across Delhi. It was done by the telecom department's wireless wing called – Wireless Monitoring Organization along with local authorities and International Monitoring Station. According to a PTI report, a total of 70 illegal signal repeaters were brought down, and 18 notices were served to the individuals and establishments in Connaught Place and Hauz Khas from February 18 to February 22, 2021 — more details on the story ahead.

DoT Removed 400 Illegal Signal Repeaters in 2020

In 2020, the telecom department got rid of approximately 400 illegal signal repeaters or boosters. The department started an awareness drive from February 18 to 22, focusing on illegal signal repeaters, which are one of the biggest cause of call drops and lower quality mobile network connectivity.

Devendra Rai, IRRS, Engineer-in-Charge of Wireless Monitoring Organization, DoT, said that people voluntarily surrendered the repeaters. For unaware, the use of signal repeaters or boosters has been deemed illegal in India.

People aren't even allowed to sell it to others. If found guilty, the person would be subject to a punishable offence according to the Indian Telegraphy Act, 1885 and Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933.

Owners who have installed such signal repeaters at their homes will also have to pay heavy penalties for their actions. In December 2020, DoT even asked all the e-commerce websites in India to remove the listings of signal boosters or repeaters from their platforms.

In the last few years, DoT has been actively searching and confiscating signal repeaters/boosters from commercial buildings and homes. People usually install these devices to get better connectivity, but in turn, they damage the overall network quality that other people in their area receive.

Thus the use of signal repeaters/boosters is not legal in India. Anyone in possession of such a device should voluntarily surrender it to the concerned department or switch it off.

bsnl-is-again-offering-a-free-sim

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is again offering a free SIM card to its users living in the Chennai circle. The telco announced the offer through its Twitter handle and has kept the benefit and requirements similar to what it offered or is offering in other telecom circles. Any user who wants to benefit from the free SIM card offer from BSNL will have to get a first recharge coupon (FRC) of at least Rs 100 or more. If the user meets this simple condition, he/she will be eligible to receive the free SIM card from BSNL. However, the offer is here to stay for a limited period only.

BSNL Free SIM card Offer Details

BSNL is offering a free SIM card to only those users who will get it in the limited period between February 23 to March 31, 2021. The state-run telco is known for extending its free SIM card offers, but there is no guarantee that it will.

Overall, if the user chooses an FRC of Rs 100 or more between the offer period (February 23 to March 31, 201), he/she can get the SIM card from the telco for free. BSNL has provided this offer multiple times in other circles as well. It looks like it is working for the telco, and thus it keeps on rolling it out for different circles simultaneously.

However, one should know that the cost of a BSNL SIM card is only Rs 20. Thus it is not a very big save on the part of the customer but a discount nonetheless. The state-run telco is working on expanding its 4G network throughout the country. What's great with BSNL's 4G is that it is also focusing on the smaller towns and rural areas such as villages of India.

The offer period is quite big this time from BSNL, so there is less chance that it will extend the offer date any further from this.

Google Pixel 5a Renders Leaked Online Suggest Similar Design as Pixel 4a

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/google-pixel-5a-renders-leaked/337294/, Google Pixel 5a Renders Leaked Online Suggest Similar Design as Pixel 4a

Google seems to have finalised the design for Pixel 5a and it looks largely similar to the Pixel 4a. Last year’s Google Pixel 4a was one of the best mid-range phones launched across the globe. The Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 sport a similar design. The search giant seems to be using the same design for Pixel 5 devices as well. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL were launched in May 2019 and the pandemic delayed the launch of Pixel 4a to early August 2020. As things slowly settle down across the world, Google seems to be going back to the regular launch for Pixel 5a. Early renders of Google Pixel 5a have now leaked online courtesy of Onleaks. Continue reading to know more about the Google Pixel 5a early renders.

Google Pixel 5a: Everything You Need to Know

As the name itself suggests, the Pixel 5a will be a successor to the Pixel 4a. The Pixel 4a arrived in two models- the standard 4a with Snapdragon 730G SoC and the 4a 5G with Snapdragon 765G SoC. Google introduced the Pixel 4a first, followed by the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5. The three phones had the same design with a single punch-hole display and plastic design.

The Pixel 5a renders reveal the exact similar design as the Pixel 4a. The phone seems to be constructed out of plastic and there will be a 6.2-inch Full HD+ OLED screen on the front. The 5a has a dual-camera setup on the back with LED flash and a PDAF sensor. Google is not going away from the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner as the Pixel 5a retains this feature. The phone will have stereo speakers too.

The 5a seems to be a direct successor to the Pixel 4a 5G, instead of the Pixel 4a because of the screen size. Or maybe Google will introduce two phones dubbed as the Pixel 5a and the Pixel 5a XL. But the report doesn’t mention anything as such. As for the hardware specs, the Pixel 5a will likely be powered by a Snapdragon 700-series chipset.

Also, there are no details regarding the launch date of the Pixel 5a.

Netflix is now rolling out a new feature called ‘Downloads for You.‘ The streaming platform introduced the ‘Smart Downloads‘ feature three years ago and the Downloads for You feature is very identical to the former. Smart Downloads basically downloads the next episode of your favourite show when you’re on the go, whereas Downloads for You downloads shows or movies to your mobile phone based on your tastes. Netflix says the feature is being rolled out to Android users across the globe. The company will soon begin testing the feature on iOS. Here’s how to enable the Downloads for You feature on Netflix’s Android app.

How to Enable Downloads for You Feature on Netflix Android App

With the new feature, Netflix wants to make discovering your next new favourite series or film quick and easy whether you're connected or not. The Downloads for You feature automatically downloads recommended shows or movies to your smartphone based on your tastes. The feature sounds a bit weird, however, if you are an avid Netflix user, it comes in really handy.

That said, Netflix says the users have full control of how much is downloaded to the smartphone. To enable the Downloads for You feature, you can follow the two steps:

  1. Go to the Downloads tab on your mobile device and toggle on Downloads For You.
  2. Choose the amount of content you want to be downloaded to your device (1GB, 3GB, or 5GB) and click Turn On. The more space you allow, the more recommendations Netflix will download for you.

The feature will download the content when content to a Wi-Fi network. If you’ve enabled mobile data downloads on your smartphone, then it will download via mobile data as well. The feature is available today on Android globally. Download the latest Netflix app via Google Play Store.

Vodafone Idea has introduced VoWi-Fi or Vi Wi-Fi Calling service in Delhi, after the silent launch in Mumbai and Gujarat telecom circles. In less than three weeks, Vi has launched the Wi-Fi Calling service in three circles. With the addition of Delhi circle, Vi Wi-Fi Calling service is available in five circles- Maharashtra & Goa, Kolkata, Gujarat, Delhi and Mumbai. While Vi is adding new circles to the list, the Vi VoWi-Fi compatibility smartphone list isn’t growing as expected. As of this writing, smartphones from OnePlus and Xiaomi support Wi-Fi Calling service on the Vodafone Idea network, which is underwhelming. To recall, Vi first launched the service in December 2020. The service will expand to other circles as well in the coming weeks and months.

Vi Wi-Fi Calling or VoWi-Fi Service Now Available in Delhi Circle

Delhi is one of the leading telecom circles for Vodafone Idea and it is not surprising to see the telco launching VoWi-Fi service in the circle ahead of others. As noted, the service is now available across five circles out of 22 telecom circles in the country. Vi Wi-Fi Calling can be activated on compatible smartphones and can be enjoyed free of cost.

Compatible smartphones from Xiaomi include Mi 10i, Redmi 9 Power, Mi 10T, Poco C3, Poco X3, Redmi 9, Redmi 9A, Redmi 9i, Poco M2 Pro, Redmi Note 9, Mi 10, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi K20 Pro, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7, Redmi Y3, Redmi 9 Prime, Redmi 7A, Redmi Note 8, Poco M2, Poco X3 and the Xiaomi Mi 10i. The OnePlus smartphones- OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus Nord, OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro support Vi Wi-Fi Calling. It is surprising to see the OnePlus 7 series missing out on this list, however, they could gain Vi Wi-Fi Calling support with the stable Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 update very soon.

Several popular phones from brands like Samsung, Oppo, Vivo and Realme are missing the support. The telco says all the prepaid and postpaid customers in the said circles can enjoy the service. Furthermore, Vi says if you are on an unlimited prepaid plan/pack, then you will not be charged for voice calls. However, if you are on a non-unlimited plan/pack, then the charges will be applicable as per the base tariff. Also, the data consumption for Wi-Fi Calling will happen on your broadband network.
