| Trai Says Locally Made Telecom and Broadcast Gear Will Make India a $5 Trillion Economy Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:57 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/trai-suggestions-local-gear-telecom-sector/337614/, Trai Says Locally Made Telecom and Broadcast Gear Will Make India a $5 Trillion Economy
Amid rising tensions between India and China, the Trai has now called for suggestions to push the locally made gear in the telecom and broadcasting sectors. As you might be aware of already, Chinese gear makers like ZTE and Huawei may not take part in India’s telecom sector anymore. Already, telcos like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are switching to other gear makers like Ericsson and Nokia. The Government of India is aiming to cut dependence on the import of equipment from China. Trai chief PD Vaghela on Wednesday highlighted that local R&D in telecom and broadcast sectors could make India a $5 trillion economy. More on the matter below. Trai Highlights the Importance of Locally Made GearAccording to ET Telecom, the Trai had a high-level discussion with CDoT, TSDSI, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Delhi earlier today. During the meeting, Trai chief PD Vaghela said India could become a $5 trillion economy by making the telecom and broadcasting gear locally. Right now, India is importing the gear from foreign companies like Samsung, Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE and Huawei. The major question would be the adoption of locally made gear. For this, the Trai suggests having a ‘structured approach’ focusing on R&D, incentivising efforts and providing assured purchase orders to R&D institutes. The next spectrum auction begins on March 1. Indian telcos Airtel and Vodafone Idea have already started replacing the gear used by ZTE and Huawei with those of Ericsson and Nokia, according to the same ET report. The government is also pushing BSNL to use the locally-made gear for 4G services in the country. However, the state-run telco said a 4G tender from a local gear maker is as expensive compared to those of global OEMs. This is also one concern that R&D institutes should keep in mind. If a tender price is high, then telecom operators will not shy away from opting for global vendors. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel already said they are developing in-house 5G technology. |

Streaming Platforms Go Aggressive in IndiaGregory Peters, chief operating officer at Netflix in the earnings call in January said that "there are 100 things" that Netflix can and needs to do in the region. The Netflix COO said that it is not about "just one trick or one thing that will basically make us successful in the region." "It’s a great one where even simple things like we’re improving the ability for our members to tell us what languages they want in terms of the content when they’re browsing," Peters said in the fourth quarters earnings call in January. "If you’re in a multigenerational household, then all of a sudden, that might shift how you think about like what titles you want to present and what language it is." In early December, 2020, Netflix provided access to "millions of people" to its platform for no additional cost through its StreamFest exercise. Initially teased by the company in late October, 2020, Streamfest enabled the Indian users with no active subscriptions to access the platform for free. Meanwhile, the Walt Disney Company, an American diversified media and entertainment conglomerate in mid-February said in its first quarter earnings call that Disney+ Hotstar accounted for 30% of its global subscriber base. Christine McCarthy, chief financial officer at the Walt Disney Company said that "Disney+ Hotstar subscriber additions continued" its "strong growth trend" largely driven by the Indian Premier League (IPL). "So just to put it in context, cricket is a very important part of a diversified programming strategy at Disney+ Hotstar," McCarthy said in the first quarter earnings call. However, McCarthy said that the platform offers a "lot of other local content that consumers like to view" and that the company made it "economical" for its users to sign up for one-year packs. The streaming platform currently offers two one-year packs including a VIP pack priced at Rs 399 per year and a premium pack priced at Rs 1499 per year. While the premium pack includes the Disney+ content and other English shows, the VIP pack offers the Disney+ content only in the Indian languages. "So those are some of the things that we’re looking at and utilizing to mitigate the churn that one could expect from IPL, but it’s a more diversified offering in terms of programming than just cricket," McCarthy said. Motilal Oswal Financial Services on Thursday said that the "deep-pocketed" Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney could invest in India for the "long haul." "Stronger OTT players – such as Amazon, Netflix, and Disney + Hotstar – could invest for the long haul even without a profitable model in place as it takes time to scale up the subscription and advertisement models," Motilal Oswal said in a report on Thursday. OTT Consumption Improves Due to Increase in Data PenetrationThe Indian diversified financial services firm said that the OTT subscription market in India was around Rs 2800 crores in 2019 but that the market "doubled" in 2020. Crucially, Motilal Oswal said that the size of the Indian OTT subscription market is set to touch Rs 6200 crores by the next financial year. "The improving ecosystem of OTT consumption, led by increased digital content and data penetration, is a well-known evil," Motilal Oswal said in its report on Thursday. "Increasing viewership and the growing size of the OTT market are attracting a strong talent pool and the ability to develop good-quality content, which is creating a strong substitute (unlike TV content), especially in a price-sensitive market such as India." The firm said that the theatrical industry in India has "grown at a steady pace" in the past 10 years "despite the advent of satellite broadcasting" and Direct-to-Home (DTH) services. However, Motilal Oswal said that the "contribution of movie theatres in the movie revenue pie" has now "declined" to 75% in India and around 40% across the globe. "Over time this could diminish the bargaining power of cinemas in India for exclusive screening windows – this trend is already seen globally," Motilal Oswal said. Meanwhile, S Sashikanth of YNOT Studios, the company behind Jagame Thandiram, in a release said that Netflix offers a "global reach" as the streaming giant is present in over 190 countries across the globe. "With the subscriber bases of larger OTT platforms continuously expanding in India, their ability to raise the bid for acquiring digital rights for movie distribution would increase," Motilal Oswal said. "Moreover, many small- to mid-budget projects would prefer OTT platforms for direct releases." |

| Supreme Court Will Hear AGR Dues Matter in Two Weeks Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:29 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/supreme-court-will-hear-agr-dues/337545/, Supreme Court Will Hear AGR Dues Matter in Two Weeks
The Supreme Court (SC) of India has said that it will hear on the matter of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues in two weeks. The matter was raised by the telcos earlier in January, saying that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has assessed the dues wrongly. It is worthy to note that last year, the Supreme Court had ruled that it won't entertain the recalculation of the dues and would go with the final amount that DoT had assessed. Thus, if the apex court is ready to hear out the telcos, it can be considered a big win for the industry. AGR Dues Reassessed by Telcos Point Flaws in the Calculation by DoTAccording to an ET Telecom report, the verdict of SC would finally bring closure on the matter for the industry. It all started when Bharti Airtel approached the court saying that DoT had made multiple errors while calculating AGR dues. The telco's AGR assessment was Rs 13,004 crore against the DoT's Rs 43,980 crore. Airtel has already paid Rs 18,004 crore out of the total dues. Following Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), using the same points as made by the former operator, said that according to its assessment, the AGR dues should have been Rs 21,533 crore instead of the DoT's calculation of Rs 58,400 crore. Vi has already paid Rs 7,854 crore out of its total dues. Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) also said that DoT's assessment of the AGR dues is wrong. The telcos dues were assessed at Rs 16,798 crore, out of which it has already paid Rs 4,197 crore. Any reduction in the AGR dues would help both Airtel and Vi expand their businesses faster. It would further reduce the stress on Vi, who is facing a substantial amount of subscriber loss every quarter that passes by. The company is already looking to raise Rs 25,000 crore via debt and equity for surviving its financial crisis. |

| 5G Spectrum Price Too High at the Moment for Trials: Report Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:56 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/5g-spectrum-price-too-high/337494/, 5G Spectrum Price Too High at the Moment for Trials: Report
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will soon allocate 5G spectrum to the telcos for testing purposes. But the number of telcos that participate in buying the concerned spectrum for conducting trials is expected to be very small, given the spectrum pricing is very high. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) needs to look at the reserve price set for the 5G spectrum and lower it. The regulator has recommended a price of Rs 492 crore per MHz of 5G spectrum — more details on the story ahead. Government's Call Can Push Trai to Lower the Reserve PriceAccording to an ET Telecom report, a call from the government can push Trai to lower the reserve price of the 5G spectrum. That said, it is not a guarantee that the reserve prices will be lowered, but only speculation or 'expectation' at the moment. In a report released on February 15, Deutsche Bank said that the Indian government cares more about maximising revenues from the spectrum sale rather than improving network quality. It is worth noting that the upcoming 4G auctions will contain 2300 MHz of spectrum worth Rs 3.92 lakh crore. ICICI Securities, however, said that looking at the earnest money deposit (EMD) submitted by Jio (Rs 10,000 crore), Airtel (Rs 3,000 crore), and Vodafone Idea (Rs 475 crore) for the upcoming auctions, their potential payouts are capped at Rs 70,000 crore, Rs 21,000 crore, and Rs 3,300 crore. The government will soon avail the 5G spectrum for the telcos to start testing; however, no fixed timeline for the same is given. Anshu Prakash, DoT's secretary, said that the government plans to auction the 3300-3600 MHz spectrum within the next six months. All the telcos except for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have said that their networks are 5G ready and are waiting eagerly for the government to allow them to test 5G with the dedicated spectrum band. |
| Samsung Reportedly Developing Foldable OLED Panels for Google, Xiaomi and Oppo Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:13 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/samsung-oled-panels-google-oppo/337478/, Samsung Reportedly Developing Foldable OLED Panels for Google, Xiaomi and Oppo
South Korean electronics company, Samsung, is reportedly developing foldable OLED panels for tech giants like Google, Oppo and Xiaomi. We already know what Oppo and Xiaomi are working on foldable phones, but the inclusion of Google in this list comes as a surprise. If this report from TheElec turns out to be true, then we will see a foldable Pixel smartphone in the near future. Notably, Samsung is developing ‘in-folding’ OLED panels for the three manufacturers. The report also says the three brands will launch smartphones with these panels ‘within this year.’ The in-folding foldables will be similar to the Galaxy Z Flip and the Moto Razr. Earlier, we reported that Xiaomi would launch three foldable phones this year, with the first one said to launch by the end of Q1 2021. Google Reportedly Asked Samsung to Develop 7.6-inch OLED PanelSamsung is making different sized OLED panels for the three brands. Google has reportedly asked Samsung to develop a 7.6-inch in-folding OLED panel, whereas Oppo is looking for a 7.7-inch OLED panel. Last year, Oppo showcased a foldable smartphone with a 7.7-inch display when unfolded with the outer screen measuring 1.5 to 2-inches in size. To give a brief comparison, Samsung’s clamshell in-folding Galaxy Z Flip has a 6.7-inch screen when unfolded. Xiaomi, on the other hand, is said to be looking for an in-folding OLED panel of 8.03-inch. This model will be amongst the three foldable phones Xiaomi is planning to launch this year. Samsung Display is said to be the sole partner for Oppo and Google, while Xiaomi the panels for Xiaomi’s phones are developed by Samsung Display and CSOT together. Furthermore, it is said that more smartphone brands are opting for in-folding design over out-folding. The Huawei Mate X2 launched a couple of days ago also features an in-folding design, but the display panels are developed by BOE. Google has been long rumoured to be working on a foldable phone and we are excited to see how this project shapes up. If everything goes as planned, the Pixel foldable phone will launch alongside the Pixel 6 series later this year. |
| Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 Spotted on BIS Website; Launch Seems Imminent Posted: 23 Feb 2021 07:42 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/mi-smart-band-6-bis-certification/337474/, Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 Spotted on BIS Website; Launch Seems Imminent
The Mi Smart Band 5 was launched at the end of September 2020. And it already seems like Xiaomi is prepping up for the launch of Mi Smart Band 6/Mi Band 6. Ahead of the launch, the Mi Smart Band 6 is spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website with model number- XMSH15HM. Additionally, the same wearable device also cleared the Indonesian Telecom certification. This could essentially mean the launch of Mi Band 6 is right around the corner. Xiaomi usually launches new Mi Band smart device in China first before launching in other markets, including India. So the band could first launch in China sometime in March or April before making its way to global markets. Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 Launch: What to ExpectXiaomi has been the undisputed king in the wearable market in India. Over the last 18 months, the Chinese company is facing stiff competition from Realme, and recently, OnePlus also launched its first fitness band, taking on the Mi Smart Band 5. To stay in-line with the competition, Xiaomi might launch the Mi Smart Band 6 sooner than expected. While there’s no official confirmation from Xiaomi regarding the Mi Smart Band 6, the launch will likely take place in the next couple of months or by the end of Q2 2021. Generally, if a device clears BIS, the launch will happen within the next two-three months. Tipster Mukul Sharma was the first to spot BIS certification of Mi Band 6. As for the Mi Smart Band 6, the fitness band is rumoured to offer Sp02 monitoring and built-in GPS support. Furthermore, it is also said to come with Alexa integration. An earlier report indicated that the upcoming fitness tracker from Xiaomi would feature a bigger display than its predecessor. The Mi Smart Band 5 rocks a 1.1-inch AMOLED display, so the Mi Smart Band 6 will likely arrive with a 1.2 or 1.3-inch screen. Besides, Xiaomi may also offer 30 activity modes with the wearable. It is not surprising to see Xiaomi planning an early launch for the Mi Smart Band 6. The OnePlus Band available at Rs 2,499 is a decent alternative to the Mi Smart Band 5. On the flip side, Realme is stepping up its wearable game in the country with the likes of Realme Band, Realme Watch and the Realme Watch S. As mentioned above, Xiaomi is yet to confirm the launch date of Mi Smart Band 6. In fact, the company did not even tease the wearable’s launch in its home country China. |

BSNL STV 99 After Revision: What It Offers? The STV 99 from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is one of the best-prepaid plans available right now. The plan usually offers unlimited voice calls to any network within India and free Personalised Ringback Tone (PRBT) for 22 days. BSNL retained the validity, but the plan will also offer 99 SMSes as part of this new revision. BSNL STV 298 After Revision: What It Offers? The STV 298 comes with unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit, 1GB of data per day and 100 SMSes per day for 54 days. Now, the pack ships with 2GB data per day for 56 days. The Eros Now subscription remains unchanged with this revision. BSNL STV 319 After Revision: What It Offers?BSNL introduced the STV 319 more than three years ago, keeping the heavy voice calling users in mind. We have seen the STV 319 undergoing a lot of revisions in the past, but they were majorly validity reduction revisions. The new revision is a unique one because BSNL has added 10GB data benefit and 300 SMSes to the plan, alongside retaining the unlimited voice calls benefit. The validity of the plan is the same at 75 days. BSNL PV 399 After Revision: What It Offers?Moving onto the next plan, it is the Plan Voucher 399 (PV399). This is an unlimited combo plan with 1GB daily data, unlimited voice calls to any network, 100 SMSes per day, free BSNL Tunes and Lokdhun content. The validity of the plan is 80 days. Post the revision, the PV 399 comes with 2GB daily data for the same 80 days. BSNL PV 699 After Revision: What It Offers? The last prepaid plan from BSNL to receive the revision is PV 699. This is also an unlimited combo plan with 0.5GB data per day, 100 SMSes per day, unlimited voice calls and free PRBT for the first 60 days. The plan generally comes with 160 days validity, however, BSNL will provide additional 20 days validity till March 31, 2021. This means the PV 699 offers benefits for 180 days from the date of recharge. |
