Reliance Jio has finally introduced a new offer for the JioPhone existing and new users. JioPhone is one of the innovative products launched in recent years. The idea behind JioPhone is to convert 2G feature phone users to 4G phone users, and the telco was successful in doing that. Reliance Jio today said that JioPhone has ushered an era of transformation for the feature phone users in India; The telco has successfully upgraded more than 100 million users onto the JioPhone platform. That said, the craze for JioPhone seems to be over as the telco is reporting very poor monthly subscriber additions. To boost the new user acquisitions, Reliance Jio has introduced the ‘JioPhone 2021’ offer as part of which existing users can get 12 months of service at just Rs 749, whereas the new JioPhone users can get two years or one year of service at Rs 1,999 or Rs 1,499. The telco is calling this offer '2G-MUKT BHARAT.'

Here’s everything you need to know about the JioPhone 2021 offer.

JioPhone 2021 Offer Available to Both Existing and New Users

Usually, Reliance Jio leaves the existing JioPhone users behind whenever it launches a new offer, but that’s not the case as the telco is looking to retain the current users. According to the country’s largest telecom operator, the existing feature phone users continue to be overcharged as they are forced to pay Rs 1.20 to Rs 1.50 for every minute of a voice call at a time when smartphone users are enjoying unlimited calling. Besides, Airtel and Vi customers will have to shell out Rs 45 to Rs 50 minimum charges every month to keep the connection active and get basic telecom services.

To tackle this issue, Jio is bringing the ‘JioPhone 2021‘ offer. New JioPhone users will get two options while taking the connection: The first option is priced at Rs 1,999, under which they will get a JioPhone device and 24 months of free service. For the entire 24 months, users can make unlimited voice calls and consume unlimited data (capped at 2GB high-speed every month and reduced to 64 Kbps after that). Jio did not mention the SMS benefit and it says users are not required to recharge for two years.

The second option costs Rs 1,499 and offers a free JioPhone device along with 12 months of unlimited service. Benefits include the same unlimited voice calling and 2GB of high-speed data every month, totalling 24GB.

The existing JioPhone users can get the same bundle at Rs 749 for 12 months. The JioPhone 2021 offer will come into effect on March 1 across all the Reliance Retail and Jio retailers.

EchoStar, a global satellite communication solutions provider, in its fourth quarter earnings call on Tuesday said that it is set to offer 4G backhaul solutions to Reliance Jio in seven states across India. The development was shared by Pradman Kaul, president of Hughes Network Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar engaged in the high-speed satellite internet services. In September, 2018, Hughes Communications India said that Reliance Jio had picked its Jupiter System to "enable satellite connectivity to more than 400 4G LTE sites in remote and rural locations" across India.

EchoStar Bags Multiple Orders in India

Pratho Banerjee, president of Hughes Communications India, a subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems in September, 2018, said that "satellite is the ideal technology for extending 4G LTE service to remote and rural communities."

It was said that Hughes India will also offer "managed service to include network planning, implementation, operation and maintenance" as part of its agreement with Jio.

Kaul on Tuesday said that the company received additional orders to deliver more Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) for the BharatNet program apart from the orders it received from Jio.

"We received expansion orders from Reliance Jio to provide 4G backhaul services in seven states and to add more than 600 VSATs as part of the BharatNet program to connect villages across the country," Kaul said in the earnings call on Tuesday.

Further, Kaul said that the company received orders to connect 4000 ATMs across India.

"We received an order to implement more than 4000 ATMs in support of the State Bank of India," Kaul said. "The new order brings our total to more than 50,000 ATMs being serviced in India."

EchoStar Expects Bharti Airtel JV Approval in Mid 2021

Meanwhile, Kaul said that the company is expecting to receive regulatory government approvals for its joint venture with Bharti Airtel by mid 2021.

Hughes Communications India and Airtel in early 2019, announced an agreement to combine their VSAT operations in India. In a release, the companies highlighted that the "combined entity will bring greater scale, operational efficiencies and market reach to serve India." It was said that the combined entity will continue to serve its existing users while also "focusing on serving the growing networking needs of enterprise and government" users in India.

It also has to be noted that Hughes Network Systems in July, 2020, joined a consortium led by the government of United Kingdom and Bharti Enterprises to acquire OneWeb. Hughes initially said that it will invest US$50 million in principle into OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit satellite operator that had then launched 74 satellites. However, Hughes has since "expanded" its role with OneWeb with the company now set to produce the "gateway electronics and the core module that will be used in every user terminal." OneWeb on its part has "resumed deployment of its broadband satellite constellation" with the operator launching 36 satellites on December 18, 2020.

"We are a service provider all over the world and in the different service offerings that we have we expect to be leasing depending on the market requirements some capacity from OneWeb and bundling it into the other services we offer to our existing customers and new customers," Kaul said.

The Hughes president said that in "approximately two years" the company would be ready to offer the bundled services to its users in India.

Lower 5G Spectrum Reserve Price and Skip Testing: Nokia

lower-5g-spectrum-reserve-price

If India wants to lead the 5G revolution, the government needs to lower the reserve price for the 5G spectrum. Sanjay Malik, VP and country head, Nokia, said that 5G should be deployed straight-away, and the testing should be skipped by the telcos. He noted that both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures have already been deployed around the globe, while India hasn't even started testing 5G. In the previous three years, around 144 telecom operators globally have deployed 5G commercially and have over 200 million users on their networks. Since more and more 5G devices have also launched in the market and many more are slated to come very soon, the government needs to act fast.

Reduce Reserve Price for 5G Spectrum

This is something the operators, and basically, the whole industry, has been asking the government to do. The telcos have expressed in the past that the current reserve prices for the 5G spectrum are way too high, and it would be impossible to roll out 5G commercially in the country if the rates weren't reduced.

According to an ET Telecom report, going with the current reserve price, the telcos would need to shell out $7.4 billion per 100 MHz of 5G spectrum pan-India.

Private Indian telcos have already said that their network is 5G ready, and they are only waiting for the government to take actions. If the government delays any further, India might miss the 5G train and get behind other nations like in the case of 4G.

Once 5G is rolled out commercially, more and more use cases of the technology will appear, and its demand will increase, believes Malik. It is worth noting that Nokia became the first manufacturer to produce 5G radio equipment in India at its Chennai facility in December 2020.

Malik said that Nokia is ready to partner and work with the industry to ensure a faster 5G rollout in the country.

SpaceX owned satellite broadband company, Starlink Broadband will start providing services in India by next year. The company's website is allowing users in India to 'reserve' a connection by paying a $99 deposit right away. It is not available for every region of the country yet, but users in select regions can ‘reserve’ it. The exact timeline for the launch of Starlink's services is unknown, but the company says that it will start providing coverage in several areas of India by 2022. Adding to this, the pre-booking is for limited users only and is subject to a first-come, first-serve basis.

Starlink Broadband Deposit Can be Refunded if User Wants to Opt-Out

The ‘terms and conditions’ on the company's page highlights that the deposit made will go towards the Starlink equipment kit or kits provided by SpaceX. In case the user wants to opt-out of his/her priority position, he/she will get an option to claim a full refund from the company.

However, the company has highlighted that by making a deposit, it is not guaranteed that the user will receive the connection. Adding to this, the service availability dates can change as well. The user will have to enter a few of his/her personal details before making the deposit payment.

Details such as First name, last name, phone number, email ID, and billing information will have to be mandatorily provided.

Users pre-booking a connection will get a Starlink kit which includes a tripod, phased-arrayed satellite dish, and a Wi-Fi router.

The company is targeting to provide satellite broadband internet throughout the world. It aims to eventually deliver 1 Gbps downloading/uploading speed to its users. At present, the company provides up to 150 Mbps speeds, but that has been confirmed to double to 300 Mbps through testing. The latency on the connection is expected to be between 20ms and 40ms, depending on the user's location.

WhatsApp and More Messaging Apps Might Lose End-to-End Encryption Soon

whatsapp-and-more-messaging-apps

After a big drama against the new privacy policy introduced by WhatsApp, it looks like Indian users will lose more of their privacy. The Indian government has recently mandated social media apps to find out the 'originator' of wrongful messages that lead to crimes such as rape and danger to the country's security and sovereignty. For doing so, social media applications will have to drop the 'end-to-end encryption' of messages from their platforms. According to a report from ET Telecom, the critics believe that this move from the government is seriously undermining its citizens’ freedom and privacy.

Government Not Looking for Content, But Only ‘Originator’ of Messages

The Electronics and Information Technology Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said that the government isn't interested in the ‘content or chats' of the users; it is merely looking for the 'originator' of wrongful messages.

Particularly, messages subject to potential crimes for which the punishment is more than five years is what the government is interested in. Under the rules, if the message originated from outside the country, whomsoever shares it first in India with the others will be termed 'originator' and will be subject to punishment.

For finding the originator of the messages, social media platforms will have to lose their 'end-to-end encryption' technology for Indian users.

The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) executive director Apar Gupta said that enabling this rule would greatly impact the privacy of Indian users. He said that this rule would increase the scope of cybersecurity threats/crimes and undermine users’ privacy.

The messaging applications will have to tweak their operating models and tech infrastructure to implement such a rule. It is worth noting that WhatsApp had earlier refused to serve the government with the information about the origination of messages by compromising on its end-to-end encryption technology.

It will be interesting to see how Indian users react to this information and what course social media applications will take.

Premium Model in Redmi Note 10 and Realme 8 Series to Feature 108MP Primary Sensor

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/redmi-note-10-realme-8-cameras/337965/, Premium Model in Redmi Note 10 and Realme 8 Series to Feature 108MP Primary Sensor

Xiaomi announced that the Redmi Note 10 series in India would come with a 108MP primary sensor on the back. The premium model in the series, aka the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, will likely have a 108MP lens. Besides Xiaomi, Realme also confirmed that it is bringing a 108MP sensor smartphone to India and it could be the Realme 8 series. We must say Realme is on a roll at the moment. The Oppo spin-off company launched the Realme X7 series earlier this month, followed by the Realme Narzo 30 series this week. The company is already teasing the Realme 8 series launch in India. And yes, the Redmi Note 10 series and Realme 8 series will clash head-on next month. Chinese company Xiaomi will be launching the Redmi Note 10 range of devices on March 4 in India.

108MP Camera Phones to Launch Under Rs 20,000 Very Soon

The cheapest smartphone with a 108MP camera sensor in India is the Xiaomi Mi 10i. With the Redmi Note 10 series, the company may bring the 108MP camera tech to under Rs 20,000. The Redmi Note 10 Pro Max could be priced around the Rs 20,000 mark. Other phones- the Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Redmi Note 10 are also expected to launch on March 4.

Yesterday, a leaked live photo of Redmi Note 10 made all the headlines. The vanilla Note 10 might have a 48MP quad-camera setup on the back and a Full HD+ AMOLED display on the front. This is really exciting considering the presence of an AMOLED screen. So we can expect the entire range of Note 10 devices to have AMOLED screens, but the real question is the presence of a high refresh rate.

Xiaomi is also expected to launch at least one device in the Redmi Note 10 series with 5G support, and again we are expecting it to be the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. The Redmi Note 10 Pro might come with Snapdragon 732G chipset underneath, whereas the Note 10 Pro Max might have Snapdragon 768G SoC. Xiaomi confirmed that the entire Note 10 devices would have mid-premium Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

On the flip side, we have Realme which basically confirmed the key feature of its upcoming Realme 8 series. The Realme 8 Pro which is expected to be the premium model in the series will be donned with a 108MP primary lens on the rear side. Realme is expected to reveal the India launch date for the Realme 8 series later today. Both the Realme 8 and Realme 8 Pro will likely offer 5G support.

Samsung Galaxy M62 Goes Official as a Rebranded Galaxy F62: Check Differences

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/samsung-galaxy-m62-f62-differences/337956/, Samsung Galaxy M62 Goes Official as a Rebranded Galaxy F62: Check Differences

Samsung Galaxy M62 was all set to go official in Thailand next week, but oddly, the company has listed on the phone on its official website confirming the entire spec-sheet. As it was rumoured earlier, the Galaxy M62 is nothing but a rebranded version of the Galaxy F62 that went official in India last week. To recall, the Galaxy F41 was the first smartphone in the Galaxy F series and it was a rebadged Galaxy M31. This time around, Samsung is doing it opposite; The Galaxy M62 has exactly similar specifications as the Galaxy F62, albeit the internal storage on the former which we will discuss in detail below. The official launch of Galaxy M62 is set for March 3 during which the South Korean company will reveal the pricing and availability details.

Samsung Galaxy M62: Specifications and Features

The Galaxy M62 has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display on the front with the regular 60Hz refresh rate. The display has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a punch-hole located in the centre of the screen. The phone comes powered by the Exynos 9825 chipset clubbed with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. The handset also has a microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 512GB. The only difference between the Galaxy M62 and the Galaxy F62 is the internal storage. Samsung launched the F62 in two variants in India and both of them features 128GB storage. However, the Galaxy M62 has been listed with 256GB of storage for the premium model (possibly 8GB+256GB).

Apart from internal storage, there are no differences between the two phones. Cameras on the Galaxy M62 include 64MP Sony IMX682 primary shooter on the rear, 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a couple of 5MP (depth and macro) sensors that complete the quad-camera setup. Samsung has included a 32MP selfie snapper on the Galaxy M62.

Other features include a 7000mAh battery, 25W fast charging, Android 11-based OneUI 3.1, 4G LTE, VoLTE and a USB Type-C port is located on the bottom. The phone also rocks a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

It is unknown whether Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy M62 in India or not. The Galaxy F62 is being sold via Flipkart, Samsung Shop Online, Reliance Digital and MyJio stores. The price of the F62 is set as Rs 23,999 for the base variant and Rs 25,999 for the top-tier variant. If the M62 reaches India, we can expect the prices to hover around the same Rs 25,000 mark.

BSNL Launches Rs 299, Rs 399 and Rs 555 DSL Broadband Plans With 10 Mbps Speeds

Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:32 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-rs299-rs399-dsl-broadband-plans/337943/, BSNL Launches Rs 299, Rs 399 and Rs 555 DSL Broadband Plans With 10 Mbps Speeds

Ahead of the new month, BSNL has launched three DSL broadband plans priced at Rs 299, Rs 399 and Rs 555. Unlike the Fibre-to-the-Home broadband plans which usually come with high-speed internet, the DSL broadband plans from the PSU offer slow speed internet. For the record, BSNL has over seven million wireline subscribers across India and the telco’s FTTH customer base (Bharat Fiber) is just over one million. This means that a huge chunk of BSNL Broadband users are still using DSL plans. And it makes total sense for the Internet Service Provider (ISP) to launch new DSL plans aimed at the basic users. The Rs 299, Rs 399 and Rs 555 DSL broadband plans come with just 10 Mbps speeds.

BSNL Rs 299 DSL Broadband Plan: Benefits Detailed

BSNL’s Rs 299 DSL broadband plan is named ‘100GB CUL.’ Benefits of the plan include 10 Mbps speeds till 100GB, after which the speeds will be reduced to 2 Mbps. The plan is available to all the new BSNL Broadband users across all circles except the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

It is worth noting that the Rs 299 BSNL Broadband plan will be available for six months only. Here’s how it works- BSNL new users can subscribe to the Rs 299 plan for the first six months, after which the ISP will migrate them to the Rs 399 DSL plan.

To avail the Rs 299 plan, new BSNL DSL Broadband users will have to pay a security deposit of Rs 500. And yes, there’s also the benefit of unlimited voice calling to any network within India.

BSNL Rs 399 DSL Broadband Plan: Benefits Detailed

Also known as the ‘200GB CUL’ broadband plan, the Rs 399 DSL plan from BSNL comes with the same 10 Mbps speeds up to 200GB. BSNL is offering post FUP speeds of 2 Mbps with this plan as well. This DSL broadband plan also requires a security deposit of Rs 500 and the minimum hire period for the plan is one month. Users will also get unlimited voice calling benefit with this plan.

BSNL Rs 555 DSL Broadband Plan: Benefits Detailed

Lastly, we have the newly launched Rs 555 DSL Broadband plan that offers 10 Mbps speeds up to 500GB and unlimited data at 2 Mbps speeds. Similar to the Rs 299 and Rs 399 broadband plans, this BSNL Broadband plan also offers unlimited voice calling benefit.

The Rs 299 and Rs 555 DSL Broadband plans from BSNL are available to both new and existing users. They can also be subscribed for longer durations; For example, BSNL is providing some of its broadband plans in four long-term subscriptions- 5.5 months, 10.5 months, 20.5 months and 30.5 months. The PSU is offering up to 5.5 months of free service with long-term plans.

The new plans will go live on March 1, 2021.
